A completely volunteer-based organization, Kiwanis clubs are almost everywhere.

Locally, they support a high school community service organization known as Key Club in both Fishers and Hamilton Southeastern High Schools. Canaday works with Kiwanis clubs and elementary schools to provide a program known as “Bring Up Grades,” or BUG, and a character-building program known as “Teriffic Kids.” In junior high, Kiwanis sponsors service clubs known as “Builders Clubs.”

Home for Boys & Girls, had a huge impact on Canaday. "Here is an organization helping kids catch up in school, both academically, socially and emotionally.

These kids come from orphanages, foster care, or other means, to this place for help.

Every child there is provided a full four-year college scholarship. I have met graduates of this school who are very high-ranking military and corporate executives. I will always donate to them.”

As President of Kiwanis International, Canaday traveled the globe, visiting parts of the world where he was warmly received. “It was simply amazing to see the good work being done to benefit children by Kiwanians all over the world,” shared Canaday.

Denise Parker, who works with the Kiwanis International Board of Trustees, has worked closely with Canaday for more than 20 years. “Don is one of my favorite Past International Presidents, perhaps since he has lived near the headquarters and can pop in more frequently, but regardless, he has a strong commitment to helping children through Kiwanis," she said. "He is always a joy to work with.”

hile stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska, as a Lt. Col. with the U.S. Army in 1969, Don Canaday’s superior officer explained that the U.S. Army was very proud of its relationship with the City of Fairbanks and had other officers representing the Army in all other civic service organizations except Kiwanis.

He asked Canaday, “Do you have a problem representing us as a member of Kiwanis?”

Canaday, having no idea what Kiwanis was, responded, “No, Sir!” For the rest of Canaday’s military service, wherever he was stationed, he became a member of a local Kiwanis Club, or started one. Forty-six years later, retired Brig. Gen. Canaday is still committed to Kiwanis International. “Kiwanis International is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the world one child and one community at a time.”

2015 marks the 100th anniversary of Kiwanis International, headquartered in Indianapolis. The first Kiwanis Club was founded in 1915 in Detroit. In the Kiwanis family there are over 600,000 members in over 80 nations around the world that provide six million hours of service each year. Collectively, Kiwanis International raises over $100 million every year to serve the needs of children.

After traveling to many destinations, Canaday says his favorite places were New Zealand and Austria. Canaday remembers the scenery in New Zealand vivdly. “Seeing the snow-capped mountains, with flowers below and green fields, the landscape near Christchurch is breathtaking,” he said.

While in Austria, Canaday had the honor of being knighted in a castle. “I have dined with presidents and royalty, but the most endearing and special memories are those of the positive impact that Kiwanis has had on the lives on children all over the world,” said Canaday.

Now, as a Past International President, Canaday continues to serve at both the local and international level. He is sent to help where needed and has recently taken on a key role in membership growth and service within North America. Canaday is a member of both the Meridian Hills and the Geist Kiwanis clubs.

conference room one day while a meeting with representatives of the U.S. Army was underway. Canaday was called into the room with the introduction, “I would like you to meet our general.” The entire room came to “attention.”

It was also through Kiwanis International that Canaday met his new wife, Sharon, the Associate Director of Economic and Community Development for Ball State University’s Building Better Communities.

Sharon worked for Kiwanis in Ghent, Belgium. After she returned stateside, Sharon met Don at a lunch date with a mutual friend of theirs. They married three years ago.

Kiwanis International has developed strong relationships with many corporations and organizations. One of the Kiwanis Vision Partners is the U.S. Army. As a coincidence, Canaday was walking by the

College Mentors for Kids Sixth Annual Inspire Awards Lifetime Achievement Award winner opens up about his business experience and who have been his mentors.

“They can’t eat you.” This valuable piece of advice from David Becker’s grandfather is possibly one of the most unforgettable phrases of truth in business. Shared when Becker started his first company, “Remember, whatever happens, they can’t eat you. You as a person will always survive, and you can start over.”

These words of wisdom set the stage of an already independent thinker, solidifying the fearlessness to step forward.

Growing up in Speedway, Becker had the unique experience of living near the track when crews rented out the surrounding garages of homes during the month of May. “As kids, we were allowed to stay out until the drinking was well under way and the language turned south,” recalls Becker.

like a working MBA,” states Becker. He quickly hit the ceiling, stagnating where he could have coasted for years, but that didn’t fit his style. Confirming this feeling, Becker met CEO Jack Welch during a company seminar in Chicago. Welch concluded his speech by asking if there were any questions.

As Becker’s boss, seated next to him, was covertly yet frantically trying to get him to lower his arm, Welch called on him. After answering Becker’s proposed question, Welch called him up to the stage.

“No one ever raises their hand to ask a question. I commend you for being brave enough to ask. And it was a GOOD question,” said Welch to Becker off to the side of the stage.

After seventh grade, Becker’s family moved to Monrovia, where Becker graduated from high school. “I thought we had moved to Green Acres,” shares Becker. It was here in Monrovia where Becker developed an appreciation of land and space, influencing his current home built on 150 acres.

Becker opted not to accept a highly-coveted spot with the United States Coast Guard Academy and instead attended DePauw University. He listened to his gut again four years later, deciding not to go to law school, just three weeks before graduation. “It may have been impulsive, but I just knew where I was supposed to go, or more so where I was not intended to go,” said Becker.

This event confirmed what Becker already knew. He was not meant to be a sheep.

He was a shepherd. Having absorbed as much as he could at GE, he sought his next experience.

It was through the challenge of finding an adequate computer system for credit unions in Indiana that Becker found himself launching out on his own. After working with the Indiana Credit Union Trade Association during the deregulation phase of the early ‘80s, Becker wrote a business plan on how to solve their problem. The solution was simple and outlined in his business proposal.

Upon presenting the business plan to the credit union, it was clear that the union had no idea what to do with a business plan. Evident that this was going nowhere, Becker promptly quit his job and formed a company on his own. He would solve the computer problem and the credit unions would become his clients.

Becker found a guy in Michigan to sell him what he needed at wholesale. Without first solidifying capital, Becker immediately got into his car and drove straight up to Michigan to forge the deal, arriving at 9 p.m. The meeting wrapped up at 1 a.m, and with his brain in overdrive with what he was taking on, he drove home.

“I think the most influential mentors in my life were my parents and my grandfather,” said Becker. “My grandfather [with a seventh grade education] was one of the most successful businessmen I have ever met in all kinds of different industries, and my parents instilled me in from a very early age that my only limitation in life was me and my belief in myself. They gave me a lot of independence as a child and taught me the responsibilities that went along with that independence. I have always felt that if I put my mind to something and worked hard enough, I could accomplish almost anything.”

This conviction held true, for several tech companies later, First Internet Bank was started. It’s ironic that he runs a tech-based, banking business. During his DePauw days, Becker would pay a frat brother to punch in his codes for a computer class. “I hated computers, I swore I would never do anything with computers,” said Becker.

Not only that, he used to make fun of bankers. “They love widgets and something tangible,” said Beckers. “First Internet Bank is intellectual property. Acquiring capital was next to impossible without a brick and mortar location.”

Becker’s oldest son, Jason, said, “Dad, the last thing I ever thought you’d be is a banker.”

“My style of management is a massive change for the conservative banking industry,” said Becker. “The mantra at First Internet Bank is, ‘The only constant is change.’”

The traditional banking model focuses on maintaining status quo. “A local bank did a year-end shareholder press release talking about the great success they had growing

their assets close to 5 percent over the past year. We grow more than that on a quarterly basis,” states Becker, “We are changing the way consumers handle their financial needs, practically on a daily basis.”

Becker has kept his NASDAQ-traded First Internet Bank headquartered here, in Indiana, recently occupying a long-vacant Fishers building near I-69 and 116th Street.

When asked in New York City why he would have his headquarters in Indiana, Becker’s response was, “Why not?! I can be anywhere in a couple of hours, the Midwest work ethic is good, it’s a great place to live, and the cost of living is hard to beat.”

Throughout Becker’s career, he has always given back. Whether this involves his countless charitable work, assisting the entrepreneurial sector or commissioning artwork, Becker gives his time and efforts to bettering the community.

“I like bouncing both ideas and problems off others to get different perspectives,” he said. “I think I get more out of the conversations than they do.”

Becker’s positive influence in the community cannot be understated. When former Indianapolis Mayor Stephen Goldsmith started the High Tech Task Force, Becker was immediately on board as a member. senior vice president of Health Catalyst, a healthcare data and analytics company.

“David is tremendously busy, yet he always makes himself available. Always,” said Salyers. “He listens, asks questions and leads you down an intentional, thoughtprovoking path. Becker exhibits great humility. He somehow makes you feel like he is the one learning and growing from the relationship. This builds great confidence and gratitude in the people around him. But ultimately, he simply takes a genuine interest in people, and for that I am grateful.”

According to College Mentors for Kids, “The Inspire Awards are an opportunity to connect with other business and community leaders who value mentoring in the workplace and community.”

People like Becker and a few others on that High Tech Task Force had the foresight to attract high tech companies to Indianapolis.

Since that time, it is easy to track the influence and impact those individuals have made for the area.

“David Becker takes the time to grow the people around him,” said Salyers. “In turn, you feel an obligation to do the same and pass along support and knowledge to others without ever asking for anything is exchange.

This is how entrepreneurial communities grow, and our community has benefited greatly from David’s example in this regard.”

At the 1999 launch of First Internet Bank, which received huge international media coverage, a reporter from the BBC asked, “What do traditional banks have that you don’t have?” Becker replied, “Long lines in the lobby.”

“I think I have always been an out-of-the-box thinker because I never knew there was a box,” says Becker.

Marian University’s Online Accelerated Nursing Program has created an alternative path into nursing for college-educated students seeking more rewarding options.

This 16-month program allows students to leverage a four-year degree into a bachelor’s in nursing with top quality training through a partnership with St. Vincent Health.

For one local family, this “second degree” option helped extend a family legacy of nursing and faith-inspired healthcare.

Rachael Brown, a recent graduate of the Online Accelerated BSN Program, was attracted to Marian University for a number of reasons. “The Franciscan values of Marian University and those of St. Vincent Hospital are complementary, and I was drawn to their thoughtfulness in caring for a patient’s body, mind, and spirit. These are the values that I grew up with, and applying these on a daily basis in a work environment where I am truly helping people is what I knew I wanted to do.”

Rachael attended Southern Illinois University (SIU) on a volleyball scholarship for her undergraduate degree. “At 18 years old, I had no idea what I wanted to major in.

I just knew that I wanted to play volleyball,” says Rachael. But motivated by a desire to help others, Rachael had a role model in nursing close by.

Rachael’s mother, Loraine Brown, began her own career as a nurse at St. Vincent 29 years ago. Having also attended Marian University (then Marian College), she was drawn to St. Vincent for the same reasons as her daughter and now serves as Executive Director of Mission Integration for St. Vincent Hospital.

“Being a nurse is so special. To serve the patient and their family is so rewarding.

I don’t think of this as a job,” shares Loraine.

“During a visit to Evansville, I witnessed the Sisters [The Daughters of the Poor] and nurses caring for patients, and I could see myself doing that,” shares Rachael.

While having lunch with her mom in the St. Vincent Hospital cafeteria during her junior year of college, Rachael saw a Marian University table. “I picked up a brochure on the online accelerated program and started asking questions,” adds Rachael.

The Marian University Online Accelerated BSN Program is an intense, yet flexible, 16-month commitment. Lectures are online, with hands-on classroom exercises and clinical training at St. Vincent Hospital.

“I graduated from SIU in May and started with Marian in August,” says Rachael.

“The real-world clinicals at St. Vincent were great. The nurses and staff were very welcoming. It is a teaching hospital, and we were able to work closely with the wonderful nurses there. We gained confidence every day,” shares Rachael.

Students of the accelerated nursing program come from a wide array of backgrounds, ages, and experience, but they share the desire to pursue meaningful work in a highly sought-after field.

“In my class, there were students like me who just graduated from a four-year college,

a lawyer who practiced for 15 years, an Army Ranger, former teachers, an engineer and a marketing executive. All were making a career change,” shares Rachael.

At the first city council meeting for the city of Fishers, Geist representative from the southeast district Pete Peterson was voted by his fellow council members to be the first city council president for the upcoming year.

His journey started as the “Chief Antagonist” for the then Town of Fishers during the forced annexation fight that started in 2005. As president of the Geist United Opposition (GUO), Peterson was rallying Geist residents to form the Towns of Geist in an effort to avoid the annexation. In the end, a judge determined that Fishers initiated their annexation before the Towns of Geist were filed and the 2,000 plus unincorporated residents became Fishers residents on January 1, 2010.

“The governor [Mitch Daniels] passed a 1 percent property tax cap which pretty much made the property tax increase we were fighting a nonissue,” said Peterson.

Once Geist was part of the Town of Fishers, voting districts were drawn up in 2010, and Peterson was the likely candidate to fill the area’s first seat on the town council. Geist and Fishers residents alike were still bitter over the annexation which made for a close race in the 2011 election.

Fishers’ districts were voted on at large, meaning that Peterson needed a good showing in the Geist area to counter the anti-GUO, anti-Peterson sentiment in the rest of the town. He beat out two other candidates for the seat by only 12 votes and was sworn in on Jan. 3, 2012.

“Nobody knew what to expect,” recalls Peterson.

“Here I was fighting these guys for the last five years, and now I’m sitting next to them at a town council meeting.”

A meeting prior to his first council meeting with then town manager Scott Fadness changed that dynamic and set the stage for what has now become some of the most productive changes in recent history.

“Scott reached out to me and asked me to go to lunch. To this day, we have a tremendous relationship.”

Fadness, now the city’s first mayor, recalls meeting Peterson for the first time.

“I was surprised. He wasn’t the ‘three-headed snake’ everyone had been talking about during the annexation,” laughed Fadness.

Geist residents were skeptical as well. Peterson summarizes the sentiment of Geist residents as “distrusting,” a feeling that over time has diminished considerably since his first days on the town council.

Signs around the 2,000+ homes on the north end of Geist Reservoir reminded residents for five years of the ongoing annexation battle.

Annexation opponents formed the Geist United Opposition which staged rallies like this one in front of Bella Vita Lakeside. The Hamilton County Republican Club was hosting a Christmas party at the restaurant, and “No Forced Annexation” signs littered the entry to garner support for annexation reform.

Business development is important to a vibrant city, according to Peterson. While property taxes on homes is capped at 1 percent, rentals are taxed at 2 percent and businesses pay 3 percent.

Short-term, Peterson admits that the transition from a town to a city presents the council with their own growing pains.

“We’ve never been a city before, so it’s going to be a learning experience.

Many of her customers are business owners, physicians, attorneys and financial advisors. Listening to Munchel interact with regular customers confirms she is the most well-known cigar aficionado in the Midwest. She understands their pallets so well that when discovering a new cigar, she knows exactly which customers would enjoy it most.

Munchel’s favorite cigar is the Cuban Stock Exquisito Limitada.

She loves the development of flavor, the complexity and the constant change from the first draw.

The biggest difference between Cigar Haven and tobacco stores is the time Munchel spends with customers. ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE 2014 event

All you need is love. This year, St. Louis de Montfort Catholic Church’s Mardi de Montfort dinner and dance celebration will be filled to the brim with it. The four ladies chairing the event – Susan Wagner, Carole Thor, Sara Kupinski and Erin Hines – are pouring their hearts and souls into making the 13th annual Mardi de Montfort spectacular.

The event is traditionally Mardis Gras themed and scheduled to coincide with the weekend before Ash Wednesday, the kickoff of the Lenten season. This year’s event will have many of the same elements as the past years, but the committee has weaved in one element making the meaning of this event extra special. Sara Kupinski explains that since this year’s event will fall on Valentine’s Day 2015, they wanted to make it about love. That’s when they decided on the theme, “All You Need is Love.”

“There is such a sense of warmth and community you feel in the room during the night,” said Kupinski. “So this year it’s about all the things in your life that you love – faith, community, family, friends and more.”

Wagner agrees saying, “The night is all about relationships,

relationships with the church, community and friends. It’s exciting to see a culmination of a parish wide effort.”

Mardi de Montfort is one of the church’s largest fundraisers.

The proceeds go to benefit dozens of the church’s ministries and charities in the local community. The Interfaith Hospitality Network, a charity benefiting the homeless in the community, has been a cause near and dear to the hearts of the St. Louis de Montfort community for a long time. Along with several other local churches of all denominations, the charity provides for the homeless in many ways. Initially, the charity steps in when a family seeks shelter at a daytime center, but there are no beds available for the night. Buses will take the families who’ve been turned away and transport them to a local church. Once there, they will be provided food and shelter for the week.

“We’ve got beds set up here and bathrooms with showers,” said Wagner. “Our teens who put in community service hours serve them hot meals. It’s an amazing experience.”

After a stay at one church, families are transported to another church unless there is an opening at the community shelter. Wagner continues, “Sometimes St. Louis has hosted as many as four or five families, giving us 20-30 people, and sometimes there are just five people.”

A little Mardi de Montfort love will also be visible in the inhouse parish ministries, including the on-site food pantry and religious education. The Fund-A-Project ministry is the one which parishioners will notice the most. Fund-A-Project provides funds for areas in the parish that are targeted for improvement. Fund-AProject has been credited with improving the school playground, meeting spaces, updating the school cafeteria, and technology upgrades such as iPads for the school. This year’s project is to provide upgrades to Craig Willy Hall, the space for social gatherings and Knights of Columbus meetings.

In the spirit of charity, the children delivered and filled the box with athletic gear, balls and more. A group of first graders did a similar thing when they gathered a box full of donated Legos.

Raising funds for these projects takes a lot of planning. Organizers use Mardi Parties to gather gifts for the larger event. There are some parties for adults and others for the kids.

“We started out holding Mardi de Montfort in the cafeteria, then we outgrew that and moved it to Forum Conference and Events Center,” she said. “We outgrew that and now we have it at the Marriott North.”

The ladies agree that the Mardi Parties, the planning and hard work is a lot of fun, but they’re anxious for the big event. They’re expecting more than 300 guests out of the 1,400 invitations sent out. Thor explains they’re pleased with the numbers, and it shows that attendance continues to grow.

Wagner explains the donations involving the kids are the most heartwarming and inspiring. She describes how excited the kids get at their class gift gathering parties. Kupinski tells about the third and fourth grade Glow-in-the-Dark Kickball Mardi Party where 60 kids were in attendance. “It was pure chaos, but the kids had an unforgettable time.”

At the forefront of this fundraiser will be a live auction and silent auction. A plethora of exciting items and packages will be offered.

“The challenge is always finding new and exciting things to offer,” said Thor. “But guests also want to see their old favorites up for grabs.”

A romantic trip to Napa with a wine country tour and a New York City Broadway trip are among some of the exciting items up for auction. A pair of One Direction concert tickets on the floor level are sure to be the center of a huge bidding war.

Wagner has one gift gathering memory that stands out. “One of the children had a birthday, and instead of asking for gifts for himself,

As popular as the Jenga project is, another item is expected to be popular.

The popcorn bowl, made by the St. Louis de Montfort children, is a ceramic bowl with a special touch. Each of the students in a particular grade make a thumbprint, and under the thumbprint, they sign their names. This creative popcorn bowl has traditionally gotten top honors as the art item with the highest number of bids.

Humbly she admits her husband, Mike, makes each one of the individual blocks.

Once they’re signed by all the kids in one particular grade level, she brings them home and shellacs them herself.

In all the excitement of the entertainment, fabulous food and frenzied bidding, it’s easy to forget the purpose of the night. So the ladies are adding a special Valentine’s touch to the decorating, a “Thankful Tree.” Students and adults alike have been given paper hearts on which to write the things for which they’re most thankful.

GEIST HALF TO ADD 10K COURSE TO 2015 RACE

The Geist Half Marathon will bring new experiences to runners and the community this year, while still providing the same local feel that it always has.

New to the race this year is a common start and finish line, which is just south of Casler’s Kitchen and Bar on 113th Street and Olio.

According to Geist Half Executive Director Aprill Shelburne, runners will be able to finish just across the Olio bridge this year.

Also new for the 2015 race is the option to run a 10K. “The 10K is designed for runners that want to challenge themselves and get away from 5K’s, but maybe they aren’t quite ready for the half marathon,” said Shelburne. Runners that have already signed up for the 5K may change to the 10K online at GeistHalf.com.

This year will also bring fun for kids, while still providing adults with an atmosphere they can enjoy. “There will be a kid’s play zone area that will feature things like inflatable obstacle courses and face painting. This will allow for a kids and family area to enjoy the day.

And Shelburne is happy with the results of the new changes.

Carpe DM. Technically, the Latin phrase for “seize the day” is “carpe diem,” but a clever play on words by Hannah Eli, FHS Riley Dance Marathon executive committee member, expresses more than two words could ever convey.

Riley Dance Marathon, referred to as Riley DM, is a popular fundraising event for Riley Children’s Foundation and a highlight for students at Fishers High School. HSE also supports Riley by having a dance marathon.

For FHS Executive Committee President Meera Patel, involvement with Riley DM is natural. She hails from a Riley DM family with her older brother and sister having chaired and organized committees both in high school and at IU where the dance marathon fundraiser was pioneered.

FHS Assistant Principal Ryan Taylor has seen the impact of Riley. Taylor’s daughter, Annie, experienced amazing care by Dr. Smith, a pediatric cranial surgeon, last summer. And many in the community know the story of Ben Edwards, son of FHS teacher Chris Edwards. Ben, who is currently in remission from his rare and aggressive brain tumor, is an inspiration for others.

Countless students at FHS have been impacted by Riley, many only truly discovering their Riley story after getting involved with Riley DM. FHS student Sarah Shahsavar is a twin and was born prematurely. “Having my mom share my own Riley story is so humbling.

HISTORY PRESERVED AT GEIST The Fall Creek Township has started it restoration project of the cemeteries around Geist and Fishers.

The cemeteries that will be restored include Fort, Helms, Kinnaman, and Mt. Zion. McKay was finished in early January, while Arnett was being worked on at the time of publication.

The Fall Creek Township Board approved the $193,350 project in 2014.

The most expensive cemetery to restore will be Fort cemetery, taking up 25 percent of the budget. Helms will be the least expensive and only use 10 percent of the budget. Stonehugger Restoration Company, Inc. (SRCI) has been

contracted for the project, which will take two years to complete. This includes a break in the project over the summer of 2015.

According the Indiana codes for townships, each township is in charge of abandoned cemeteries. But this project will help preserve and maintain the headstones, some of which are more than 150 years old.

“I feel it’s very important to care for our cemeteries and preserve our history,” said Fall Creek Township Trustee Jeff Hern. “In the past few years, my office has worked diligently to repair and install fencing to help secure these

cemeteries. I’m happy to see this project get underway and restore as much of these stones as close to their original state as possible. I would like to think the families would appreciate the respect being shown to their loved ones who have passed. We have not forgotten them.”

SRCI is cleaning, polishing and putting new bases on the headstones. This process includes taking each stone out of the ground and putting a custom base on the headstone before it goes back in the ground.

According to Hern, no stone will removed no matter what condition it is in.

Being an active community participant is nothing new to Scoty’s Brewhouse. So it makes sense that the local restaurant chain chose to involve the community when it decided to update its 96th Street location.

Scoty’s Brewhouse is currently running a social crowdfunding campaign with the hopes of raising $750,000 from Hoosier donors. Tis investment will allow Scoty’s to remodel its Northside restaurant, pay back a current debt at a lower rate and involve the community in the company’s growth.

to provide loans for “brick and mortar” remodels. What is a successful business to do when it is too big for SBA loans and too small for private equity? In Scoty’s case, they decided to turn to the very people who made the restaurant chain successful to begin with: Its loyal customers.

Scot Wise – the president and CEO of a Pots & Pans Production, which is the parent management company for Scoty’s Brewhouse and Tr3e Wise Men Brewing Company – saw Localstake as an opportunity to explore non-traditional ways of funding his business.

Partnering with Indianapolis-based crowdfunding platform Localstake, Scoty’s is asking individual investors to fund this remodel and other working capital expenditures. In return for their dollars, Localstake investors do not just receive an incentive or a product; they also receive a fnancial return on their investment. Scoty’s is ofering a revenue share opportunity. Te company will pay investors 5 percent of monthly revenues over a period of fve years until they have been paid 1.5 times their original investment.

“It’s not a traditional ‘going to a bank’ world anymore,” said Wise. “Afer coming out of the last recession, I had to think of new ways to grow. We used personal investors for previous store growth. For instance, in Fort Wayne, six doctors got behind bringing a Scoty’s restaurant there. Tey own a percentage of that restaurant. Now there’s a group in Evansville looking to do the same thing. In this new world, Localstake makes a lot of sense.”

Since Scoty’s Brewhouse on 96th Street was opened in 2006, the company feels that it’s now time for a “major remodel.” Te renovated space is slated to contain a pizza oven and a whole new look for customers, which includes doors that open up the patio.

Investment opportunities for qualifed investors begin at $500, and monies are held in escrow until the minimum funding amount of $250,000 is met. Te campaign is currently scheduled to run through the end of February, with investment incentives decreasing on Jan. 31 and Feb. 28.

Tere are currently a number of other area businesses also seeking funding via the Localstake platform. According to Kevin Hitchen, one of the company’s founders, an estimated 50 percent of the companies using the service are established and 50 percent are start-ups.

There will be samples of homemade authentic dishes featuring 30 different countries.

“The International Festival is all about integrating cultures,” says Rachael Downham, International Night coordinator and vice president of World Connections Club. “We put on this event at the end of the school year to show what all students, including those involved with foreign exchange and ENL (English as a New Language) have learned and shared throughout the year. Our school is so diverse. About one out of every five students is from another culture.”

The talent show will feature performances

of different ethnicities and some of the entertainers come back each year like the group of Bollywood Dancers, who wear sparkling colorful costumes. HSE Spanish teacher, Vickie Lazaga, also performs a different Latino dance each year.

Individuals, families, groups and organizations are all welcome to set up a booth to share with the HSE community a display of their culture through food, games, photos and artifacts.

“Some people might be reluctant to try different foods," says Alison Eling, secretary of WCC and International Night publicity chair. "I was too when I went to the International Night the first time, but I think people will be pleasantly surprised at the great authentic taste from different countries. It’s not like anything we typically have in America, and it’s fun to learn about the different countries through food.”
