GIVE HOPE RIDE 12TH ANNUAL EVENT RETURNS SEPTEMBER 5 Story & Photos Provided by Fishers YMCA

This month, the Fishers YMCA will host the 12th annual Give Hope Ride event.

Give Hope Ride is a bicycle-focused race organized to benefit the multiple programs at the YMCA of Fishers, Indiana. Give Hope Ride is all part of an effort to make membership available to all residents in the Fishers community. The purpose is to bring together bike enthusiasts for a fun morning of riding while allowing them to do something charitable for others.

The event will occur Labor Day, Monday, September 5th at Olio Fields Park (14181 East 126th Street, Fishers, IN). Featuring rides of 20-, 44-, or 63-mile courses, this ride includes routes for everyone from families or beginners to the seasoned, serious competitive cyclist.

The first community Give Hope Ride in

2013 was the culmination of four previous Memorial Day bike rides hosted by Fishers residents, John and Peg Wright. The Wrights hosted their first bike ride out of their home in 2009. Then in 2010, the couple began using the event to raise donations for St. Jude Research Hospital. In 2015, the couple was pleased to have the event benefit the Fishers YMCA. The Fishers Y offers a wide range of community-focused programs aimed at promoting youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. One invaluable program to which this fundraiser contributes is Livestrong® at the YMCA for cancer survivors. Among other positive, life-changing programs are diabetes prevention classes, youth development education, overnight and summer camps, and many more.

It can sometimes be difficult to show patriotism in a way that is creative and tells a story. That’s where Brotherhood Designs comes in.

Carr and Demlow are both a part of the Fishers Fire Department, Demlow for 17 years and Carr for 23. Both feel that displaying patriotism is important to them.

Brotherhood Designs was started by Rob Demlow and Scott Carr, two Firefighter EMTs. The startup of their business was unintentional when they made their first flag as a project in their station, but ended up turning into something bigger.

“I think our goals are that any place that feels like they’d like to display their patriotism and have a neat and different piece of art on their wall, our goal is to match what the customer wants,” Demlow says. “It’s a unique thing to display. What we’re finding is that it kind of creates a good buzz within their community. If it’s in a home say you have a family gathering, we’re trying to create some good buzz about patriotism really.”

“We never thought last year that we would start a business until we started seeing that people felt like they wanted to display one of these in their homes or their businesses,” Demlow says. “We had no intention of starting a business in January of this year. But In February we started scrambling and thought, ’Well let’s just try this’ and it basically turned out to be more of a success than we would

One of the main aspects of the new City Hall will be the new art center that will be housed on the first floor. With the new inclusion of city art in the building, Mayor Fadness hopes to help bring the community together and really focus on engaging with residents through the art that will be displayed.

“In reality, it’s probably a lot more than an art exhibit area,” Mayor Fadness says.

“We are partnering with the Indianapolis Art Center, where we will have lots of art center programming and art classes on a daily basis. The entire first floor will really just be engaging the community in art and art programming, which we’re pretty excited about.”

The addition of the new art center is in hopes of bringing people into more of their city buildings. Mayor Fadness mentioned the idea of engaging the community through art and found that the opportunity to do that arose when the plan for a new City Hall had been set.

“When we realized that we needed to build a new City Hall, we thought it would be a wonderful opportunity to draw more people into their civic buildings and engage the public,” he says.

“It’s a unique combination of City Hall while at the same time it’s a center for the arts in our community.”

Mayor Fadness is excited to see the change in City Hall after construction is done. He is looking forward to seeing how the people of Fishers interact with

the art center and seeing them visit the building more.

Journey to the past.

“I like the people-focused aspect of the building we’re creating,” Mayor Fadness adds. “We’re really trying to draw more residents into their civic buildings. In being able to do that, we’re creating a really vibrant facility where people are here on a daily basis.”

With the closure of City Hall, workers will be relocated to a few different areas.

Some are being moved into different city buildings, some are moving into rented office spaces, and others are staying at home to work virtually. Mayor Fadness and the City of Fishers are hoping that by 2024 the new and improved Arts & Municipal Complex will be finished and open for civic members and residents to enjoy.

stops for them to explore, while the adult passport has 29 different stops to visit that vary from landmarks to restaurants.

This year, the City of Fishers is celebrating its 150th birthday with a Sesquicentennial Trail that invites residents of Fishers to take part in. The trail is family-friendly, and anyone who wants to participate can with the provided passports that are located around the city.

Both businesses and places that have helped build the history of Fishers are participating as stops. A stop that has historical significance might have old photos and information on why it’s important, and a business will have information on the special deal or menu item that they are offering for the trail.

“The trail is a self-guided adventure around Fishers to various landmarks with cultural significance, historic significance or just community favorites that is available for adults and kids to enjoy,” says Stephanie Perry, assistant director of community and public relations for the City of Fishers.

Those who choose to take part in the trail can pick up their passport from the participating locations and visit the diverse stops throughout the city to learn more about Fishers and commemorate the 150th anniversary of the city. People can pick up a passport (both adult and kids versions) at the Fishers Parks front desk, the Hamilton East Public Library, the City Services Building, Ohanalulu in Fishers, Schoolhouse 7 Café or at Conner Prairie. The kids’ passport includes an activity book as well as 15 different

Lots of Fishers parks can also be found on the passport as a stop to make, each one with different aspects and history that make them unique.

“Fisher’s first park (Holland Park on the west side of Fishers) is a part of it, where kids can do a scavenger hunt. We have Flat Fork Creek on the east side, (which has the highest point in Hamilton County),” Perry adds. “We also have different locations that have cultural significance, such as the Ignite Studio at the library, Highland Cemetery (which is where a lot of the city’s founders are buried) and Conner Prairie, which is a big attraction here

When people visit a stop, they can scan the QR code that will be placed there and learn more information on the stop and its significance to Fishers. People will then get a hole punch onto their passport, and when they collect enough hole punches (kids have to collect 10 of the 15 and adults 20 of the 29), they can bring the cards into the city services building to redeem it for their prize. The first 150 people to finish the trail and bring in their passport will be able to redeem it for a special gift pack, including a gift card to a restaurant in Fishers. All participants who turn in their completed passport also receive a Fishers Sesquicentennial Trail t-shirt.

The trail takes place now through June 2023, giving residents a year to complete the trail at their own pace to celebrate Fishers’ 150th.

“I’m really excited to have our residents explore all different areas of Fishers that they might not have seen before,” Perry says. “There are some really popular destinations on the passport, but there are also some places that they might not have heard of.

W

hen Zaire Franklin was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in the seventh round of the 2018 NFL draft, he didn’t know where his new team was located.

“Honestly, I didn’t know where Indiana was,” says the linebacker drafted out of Syracuse University. “I’m not good at geography.

That’s like my weakest point. I was excited, first of all, but I really didn’t know much about it. I had no prior knowledge.

I had never even been to the Midwest before.”

Franklin did know that he was joining a organization that valued winning the right way on the field and cultivating a culture of service off of it. The Colts organization wants players who represent Indianapolis in a positive way. It took some time for the Philadelphia native to adjust to the slower tempo of life in the Midwest, but he knew right away that he wanted to make Indianapolis proud.

2021 saw Franklin, a team captain, have the best season of his career. In the fourth and final year of his rookie contract, Franklin started 11 games, recording 40 tackles, an interception, a fumble recovery and a blocked punt. In March of this year he agreed to a three-year, $12 million contract extension with the Colts.

“It really felt great to know that the organization valued me the same way I valued the organization,” Franklin says. “Indiana was the home where I was drafted and where I started my career. I got real memories in Indianapolis - real relationships with people in the building, not only from teammates and coaches, but even personnel and media guys and everybody in the booth.”

Franklin says it was during his fourth season when it hit him that Indianapolis was his home. “Over the past four years me and my family, we found the Indianapolis that works for us,” he says.

With his new deal signed, Franklin says he began looking for more ways to be a part of the community. “I’m going to be in Indianapolis for three more years,” he says. “I got to immerse myself even deeper in the culture. That was why this year I went to the Indy 500 for the first time, and I loved it. That was a great experience.”

Franklin found that the best way to connect with the community is through service. “Community service is something I’m super passionate about and spend a lot of my time on,” he says. “From day one I always just wanted to do my best to help impact the Indianapolis community in a positive way.”

Every week for four seasons Franklin says he’s looked for ways to be of service to the community, with events like jersey giveaways and voter registration drives. Last year the Colts hosted a program for which players mentored local youth for four weeks. When those kids attended a game, one of them asked Franklin to get a turnover and give him the ball. During that game Franklin blocked a punt, but was unable to recover the ball. He says

moments like that are when he really feels like he’s impacting the community. “I really get my most understanding of what the city really has to offer through service, because I feel like then you really get to meet the people who make the city work,” he says.

In 2019 Franklin started Shelice’s Angels, a nonprofit named after his late mother.

The organization works with young women, providing them with different opportunities and experiences they might not otherwise have. After Franklin’s rookie year, the organization took a group of girls to the Google offices in New York City.

Shelice’s Angels also focuses on providing kids with education on financial literacy.

Franklin has a degree in finance and has been managing his own finances since he lost both of his parents at the age of 15.

Financial literacy, he says, is something a lot of people need to learn, and he believes in providing kids with whatever tools they need.

Not many seventh-round draft picks get second contracts in the NFL. A lot of players who have achieved what Franklin has achieved would be satisfied. A veteran presence in the locker room, a leader on the field and off of it, Franklin says he has a lot more left to do.

“If I’m really being honest, it’s so much more that I want to do for Indianapolis, strictly just from a service standpoint,” he says. “Then, we got to bring the city a championship. That’s something that we need. Darius [Leonard], Kenny [Moore], all the guys, we talk all the time about just what that would mean, not only for ourselves, for our organization, but what that would do for the city.”

As Franklin prepares for his fifth NFL season and his fifth year in Indianapolis, he says he takes a great deal of pride in representing his adopted home. “There’s still so much more that I can give for the city and that we can give to the city as a team,” he says. “That’s really what my motivation is.”

Chef Carlos Salazar’s Lil’ Dumplings at the Fishers Test Kitchen was a popular spot. Now he’s excited for the opportunity at The Mash House.

C

arlos Salazar was studying to become an accountant when a conversation with a friend changed the trajectory of his life.

“I mentioned to my friend, who’s now my wife, that while I loved math and numbers, I didn’t know if I could see myself working in a cubicle,” Salazar says. “She suggested I go to culinary school.”

He followed her advice and never looked back, though he admits working as a chef can be a difficult vocation.

“Cooking isn’t for everybody,” he says.

“Honestly, we [chefs] are kind of crazy. I love the stress and the 90-hour weeks. I love getting 60 orders all at once and thinking, ‘How do I do this?’ I cook better under pressure.”

After graduating first in his class from The Chef ’s Academy in 2008, Salazar landed a job as sous-chef at Oakleys Bistro, making

salads and soups. Next he opened a small, organic brunch spot before switching gears to help Neal Brown open Pizzology in Carmel. After a while, he got the itch to get back into fine dining. He went to work for The Oceanaire, then Oakleys Bistro invited him back to become a sous-chef.

“I was like, ‘Steve Oakley is the best chef in Indy,’” he says. “I jumped at the chance.

After two years there, he was given the opportunity to run Rook, an Asian-inspired restaurant that was often named among the best in Indianapolis.

“Rook was in Fountain Square, the hippest, most fun street in Indiana,” says Salazar, who ran the popular eatery for eight years.

Salazar was getting noticed while he was there, so he took a leap and opened Lil’ Dumplings in Fishers. Soon after, however, COVID-19 hit.

“I was the only one open during COVID,” Salazar says. “I was sitting in a building in 26 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2022 / TownePost.com

the dark, hoping someone would walk in to order food. I found myself wondering if this was the end of culinary restaurants - or even the end of humanity!”

Sadly, Rook became a casualty of the pandemic and permanently closed in 2020.

Salazar chose to move Lil’ Dumplings to The Garage Food Hall in the Bottleworks District, making it into a noodle bar.

Salazar grew up in Westfield, and when he heard the West Fork owners were looking to open a restaurant in his hometown, he reached out to Owners David McIntyre and Blake Jones to pitch a menu concept that would pair nicely with bourbon. They loved the concept and the menu items Salazar brought for a taste test.

The Mash House was born.“Mash” in the world of whiskey refers to the mixture of grain, water and yeast that is initially fermented to produce alcohol, prior to distillation. Plus, they wanted the restaurant

to be a “mash” of foods Hoosiers recognize and love. At first Salazar wanted to feature only Indiana cuisine, but he realized that was limiting. Instead he came up with a handful of dishes that are Midwestern in nature, and highlight Hoosier agriculture and local farmers. For instance, he uses zucchinis and tomatoes from Full Hand Farm in Noblesville. Other examples include corn, quail and rabbit.

Then there’s food that hearkens back to childhood, like the Skillet Fried Bologna Sandwich. With the way Salazar makes it, however, it likely won’t remind you of anything you ate as a kid. Made with a thick cut of Fischer Farms bologna that’s pan seared, it comes with pimento cheese, white barbecue sauce, crinkle-cut pickles and a handful of kettle chips.

“We even have quality shrimp that’s being farm-raised in Indiana,” Salazar says.

The Country Fried Rib Tips are served with shallots, pickled Fresnos, parsley, cilantro, and whiskey barbecue aioli. “I take the bones out, dredge them, fry them and then dip them in the whiskey barbecue sauce like pork nuggets,” Salazar says.

Josh Ratliff, Director of Brand Experience for West Fork, says the conceptualization for The Mash House was born out of childhood memories and Indiana charm.

The restaurant is modern and spacious with huge, 30’ ceilings. Between the dining room, balcony, private dining area, cocktail lounge and outdoor patio, seating capacity exceeds 300.

“The owners told us to focus on what Indiana does that stands up next to other worldclass food, drink and service,” Ratliff says.

“Throughout the menu development, we were reaching down into our pockets for our own childhood favorites and talking with local food makers and farmers.”

“If you’ve ever been to a distillery down south, it has that woody feeling because of all the barrels,” Salazar says. “It’s comforting, quiet and very chill.”

A popular menu item is the Country Fried Pork Tenderloin, served with shaved fennel, onion soubise, parmesan, lemon preserves, pickled mustard seeds, and chervil. “It melts in your mouth,” Salazar says. “Nobody’s serving up an Indiana pork tenderloin here in Indy. That’s why I wanted to make it into something where the flavor is familiar but doesn’t look or taste the same.”

Salazar thinks customers will be happy with the style and flavors they encounter.

“The Mash House is centered on food that feeds families, but what makes it stand out among other restaurants is the way in which we bring that food to you,” Ratliff says.

“Often chef-driven, independent restaurants get a wrap as fussy and expensive, but Chef Carlos Salazar and our hospitality team have worked hard to design and deliver a menu that nourishes and delights while offering value.”

Another yummy menu item is Grilled Prawn Cocktail. Instead of using traditional red cocktail sauce, Salazar uses a Marie Rose sauce. Instead of being cold, he grills the shrimp - head on, but peels off - with sauce on the bottom, and dresses it with herbs, scallions and frisée.

Jake Reardon-McSoley has always had a passion for improving the quality of life for others. His extensive background in the nonprofit sector has helped to shape communities through his work at the Boys & Girls Club and the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis. Most recently he spent 16 years at the Fishers YMCA, including seven years as executive director.

In July the longtime Fishers resident was named to a newly created position for the

city, recreation and wellness director.

Reardon-McSoley says he will work to improve quality of life and promote health initiatives for residents across the city.

“Fishers has a lot of exciting projects going on, including work at Geist Waterfront Park, which is scheduled to open in the spring of 2023,” he says. “We are excited to build out an operation plan for the community that will work to incorporate more impactful initiatives. We want to offer other programs and partnership opportunities.”

He says he will continue to consult with and advise many stakeholders in the community on quality-of-life initiatives, including plans for a new community center in the city.

“We are internally developing plans for a Fishers community center that will be a diamond here in the community,” ReardonMcSoley says. “I’m really working as a liaison between the mayor up and down as we see various opportunities. I want to help bring those opportunities to the mayor and deputy mayor for potential quality-of-life projects.”
