but again nothing clicked. Then he found his prime spot in downtown Fishers. “When we first opened, downtown Fishers was very different,” Glaros says. “It was almost all residential. We did a lot of advertising and couponing in those first few months. We felt like they would love it if people just tried the ice cream.” Each day the store offers 45 different flavors of ice cream, made on-site with plenty of add-ins. Fishers fan favorites include Butter Pecan, Oree-dough, Chocoholic Chunk, Mint Chocolate Chip and Graham Central Station. In the early days Glaros had no idea how popular his three northside locations would eventually be. Handel’s has a cult-like following, with people driving from other central Indiana cities to get their hands on a pint. Opening his second location in Carmel and his third location in Noblesville allowed for easier access for customers. Glaros describes Handel’s as an actual family business. In June of 2006, Fishers Magazine gave Handel’s Best Dessert honors in its People’s Choice Awards. Glaros’ daughter, Gina Glaros, graced the cover of the magazine. The proud father notes that Gina works at WTHR as an anchor on Saturday and Sunday mornings, and as a reporter during the week. Before finding a broadcasting job, she was the Fishers store manager for six months.

or the last 20 years, Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream has been a fixture in the downtown Fishers area, scooping up handmade ice cream with highquality ingredients. Greg Glaros opened the Fishers location in June of 2002. Glaros grew up in Youngstown, Ohio, where the brand began, but he never realized he would own three locations as an adult.
“I was working in the consumer electronics business and moved to Indianapolis around 1991,” Glaros says. “I just wanted to do something different, and originally I was going to go into the pizza business. I looked around but nothing clicked.” That’s when fate intervened. His brotherin-law told him Handel’s was franchising. Glaros has turned over some of the dayto-day operations of all three stores to his son, Jonny Glaros, and his fiancée, Jackie Kollath. Glaros says this business has been a wonderful family bonding experience. His brother-in-law even opened the first southside location in Greenwood at about the same time Glaros opened his Noblesville location. “It means so much to me that our Fishers location has done so well over the last years,” Glaros says. “People love to come there and hang out. Parents bring their kids. People go there on dates. It brings so much social activity to the area. It’s kind of become a Fishers landmark in the changing

Like many bachelors, when Randy De John was single, he used to have food delivered to him all the time. De John has worked in the restaurant
business for 35 years and although there are a lot of good delivery services, he also found some flaws in their systems. Sometimes food didn’t travel well and would arrive soggy or it would take an hour or more to get there. Most third party delivery companies are independent drivers that lack the much-needed customer service touch. 10 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / JUNE 2022 / TownePost.com
The trend also has delivery drivers ring customer door bells, leave the food on the porch and walk away without ever greeting the customer. One day De John and his good friend, Mike Nash, got to talking and decided to partner up and try the “ghost kitchen”

market, which is food delivery or curbside pick-up only. When the pandemic hit in 2020 and people were wary to venture out, the delivery business soared. In 2021, De John and Nash conceived Room Service on Wheels, which officially opens this month. Located across the parking lot to the Pullman Pointe Apartments on Lantern
Road, the business is unique to the market for a number of reasons. Because they serve such a dense area for traditional food deliveries, they’re able to use mopeds and bicycles for many deliveries. “We can hop on the Nickel Plate Trail, which is 50 feet from the store, and be to neighboring residences in four to five minutes,” De John says. Due to their close proximity to Pullman Pointe apartments, these residents can utilize the room service option (requesting things like bottled water, chips or candy bars). In addition, their pool area will have a plaque with a QR code so residents can

In addition, on Saturdays and Sundays, if you’re on the trail, you can walk up to the window to receive a freshly baked complimentary cookie and/or a dog treat for your pet. We would love for patrons to walk up to the window and say hello.”

De John is thrilled to be located in the Fishers community because the area has so much to offer. For instance, when the free summer outdoor concerts begin this month on Tuesday and Friday evenings, Room Service on Wheels will offer a unique service providing charcuterie boards in addition to their menu which includes kidfriendly options. Patrons can either call ahead and place an order to be delivered and/or order directly via their counter/ golf cart located at the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater. Concert goers who order at the Amphitheater will be given a numbered flag and food will be delivered directly to their chair. “You don’t have to leave your chair,” De John says. “That’s a pretty nice perk considering the concert series attracts between 3,000 to 4,000 people.” De John recalls as a kid his family pulling into the gas station and being greeted by a man in a collared shirt and bow tie, offering to gas up their car. “That personal touch of customer service has been gone for quite some time,” he says. “I’m trying to bring that back. Our brand is all about friendly customer service and we look forward to serving the community.” Room Service on Wheels is located at 11110 Lantern Rd. in Fishers. SPARK!FISHERS RETURNS JUNE 21-25 FULL LINEUP OF EVENTS ANNOUNCED FOR WEEKLONG CELEBRATION The annual Spark!Fishers festival, ignited by First Internet Bank, returns to Fishers’ Nickel Plate Cultural District this summer. Kicking off on Tuesday, June 21 and running through Saturday, June 25, the weeklong festival will offer different ways for the community to celebrate each day. “We invite the entire community to our largest celebration of the year. Spark!Fishers highlights what it is to be a Fishers resident, showcasing the breadth of art, food, music, and community organizations, all locally sourced,” says Fishers Parks Director, Sarah Sandquist. Shopping local is the backbone of any good farmers market. The Fishers Farmers Market, presented by IU Health Saxony, has returned for the 2022 summer season, and runs from 8 a.m. to noon each Saturday through September 24 at the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater (NPDA). Local vendors from central Indiana abound, showcasing produce, baked goods, meat and eggs, specialty food items, honey, coffee, plants, and even homemade dog food. Each week more than 65 vendors line the NPDA. This year 10 to 15 new vendors are selling their goods to Fishers residents.
“We’re always excited to welcome back our vendors from previous years, but we’re always happy to bring new vendors into the fold,” Sarah Sandquist, director of Parks and Recreation. “We’re so excited that the Nickel Plate Trail has officially opened to provide another way to access the market.” The event caters to the whole family, including children and pets. The Farm Hands kids program offers kids aged 2 to 12 the opportunity to engage in the local food system through educational games, crafts, demonstrations, and exposure to new fruits and vegetables. Once per month, kids can participate in the two-bite challenge. By taking two bites of the featured fruit or vegetable, kids will earn $2 in Market Bucks to spend on their choice foods at the market. 18 / JUNE 2022 / TownePost.com
This year the market leaders expanded the popular Biz Kids program. Each week young entrepreneurs are given space to sell their handmade or homegrown items. Biz Kidz Day is July 9 and features more than 40 young vendors. Man’s best friend can not only attend the event, but also even find some items created specifically for them. Collins Universal Foods sells homemade dog food and is making its first appearance at the market this year. “We have a Great Dane and he was experiencing a ton of allergy issues, so we decided to try and make his food at home,” says Monika Collins, owner of Collins
Universal Foods. “We noticed it really made a difference in his skin and coat, so we decided we wanted to share that with others. We know Fishers residents love their pets, so participating in the market was a natural fit for us.” For those who want to shop local but can’t commit to a Saturday morning, the Fishers Farmers Market at Saxony, presented by IU Health Saxony, formerly Saxony Market, offers shoppers a secondary location and time to buy. The market takes place every Wednesday from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., beginning June 1 and ending September 28. Sandquist says it’s an excellent opportunity for a midweek restock of fresh produce.

Debbie’s Daughters Bakery and Cafe is participating in the Fishers Farmers Market at Saxony for the first time this year. They offer small-batch baked goods from scratch, with a changing weekly menu. “We’re very excited to participate because this gives us another group of people to bring our products to each week,” says Jessica Walls, co-owner. “Each week we’ll offer baked goods that showcase local items grown in Hamilton County. When strawberries are in season, we’ll do a strawberry muffin or a strawberry cookie.” This year several specialty days are returning to the Fishers Farmers Market, including Biz Kidz Day on July 9, Nonprofit Day on July 23 and National Farmers Market Week Celebration on August 13. Additionally, each week a new, local yoga studio offers free, socially distant yoga at 8 a.m. on the Nickel Plate District AMP stage.

Local musicians take the stage each Saturday to entertain guests while they shop. It’s an excellent opportunity for shoppers to stick around after their shopping is done to enjoy free, local entertainment. The Fishers Farmers Market works closely with the Fishers Health Department to implement COVID-19 precautions. While the market is outdoors, social distancing and hand washing are strongly encouraged. Hand washing stations are available throughout the area, as well as restroom facilities.

“Last year we saw record attendance at the market,” Sandquist says. “We really hope to top that this year. With the addition of the Fishers Farmers Market at Saxony, we hope to grow our farmers market opportunities. Garage parking is available in The Depot and The Flats at Switch located to the east and west of City Hall, and in the new police station garage and One North garage located at the corner of Maple and North streets.

At Fatty’s Cycle, it’s all about providing customers with quality, reliable service. “We really take a lot of pride in doing the right job the first time - that’s our big thing,” says co-owner Matt Turner. “We don’t leave a lot to chance.” Founded in 2010 by business partners Matt
Turner and Kevin Lueder, Fatty’s Cycle provides motorcycle, ATV and UTV sales and service for the central Indiana area. Located in Fortville, the shop proudly services American V-twin and metric motorcycles, dirt bikes, ATVs and side-bysides, while also serving as Indiana’s premier dealer of Beta and YCF motorcycles. The City of Fishers and Fishers Parks have officially opened the Nickel Plate Trail, including the pedestrian tunnel beneath 116th Street. The grand opening celebration was held May 14. Over the past three years, the City, along with many community stakeholders, have worked to plan, develop and build the 3.8mile paved, multi-use trail, strengthening connectivity within the Fishers community. With the opening of the downtown section, users can now travel from 146th Street to 106th Street. The downtown portion of the Nickel Plate Trail also features the Monumental Stairs with a built-in bike ramp that allows pedestrians and cyclists to access the trail at 116th Street and provides seating overlooking the trail-level plaza — the perfect spot for live music, special events and community gatherings. A pedestrian bridge above the tunnel exit on the north side of 116th Street connects the existing train platform to the new Nickel Plate Station plaza, which includes swings and other activations.
