THE LATEST HOMETOWN HAPPENINGS AROUND FISHERS

Welcome to Fishers. I moved here in 1991. It was a much different place then.

The 1991 census pegged the population of Fishers at 7,508. The 2020 census number was 98,977. The best estimates from local officials show a current Fishers population between 102,000 and 105,000.

Needless to say, Fishers is a much different place now compared to the town I found in 1991. Even in the late 1990s, if I wanted to take my daughters for ice cream, we often had to leave town.

To know a bit about me, I worked in the radio broadcasting business from 1968 through 1983. I started programming music, moved to hosting talk shows, then became a local news anchor and reporter.

The radio news business was starting to change, so I switched professions and joined the federal civil service in 1983. Retirement in September of 2011 left me with a quandary - what to do next?

I did a little paid work, but felt I needed to give something back to my local community. With local Fishers news hard to come by even in 2012, I started a local volunteer news blog, covering meetings and generally writing about Fishers. 2016 was the year I began producing local podcasts, where people could have a long-form discussion, generally about 30 minutes,

about what they were and are doing in the Fishers community.

I am now in my 13th year of writing the LarryInFishers.com news blog, and ninth year producing local podcasts. I have had a front-row seat to the growth of Fishers, in population, government and economic expansion.

The first big story for me was the referendum before voters in November of 2012 - should Fishers remain a town, a reorganized city that looked a lot like a town, or a second-class city with a strong mayor’s office? The wording and structure of that referendum was confusing, but in the end, voters, by a wide margin, chose a second-class city - the Fishers we have today.

With the explosive growth in population, there has been an expansion of economic activity in our fair city. I could provide a long list of accomplishments, starting with the time Scott Fadness was the town manager to his election as mayor in 2014. Mayor Fadness has been very aggressive in growing Fishers with private sector development.

If you point to one key time in our economic history, I would say the announcement of IKEA building a store here was a big one. Shortly after that announcement, Topgolf said it would build its new facility near IKEA. Then, Mayor

Fadness accepted a private sector offer to develop Fishers District, a commercial area heavy on restaurants.

Fishers as a city has been aggressive in moving forward. The old Town Hall, later City Hall, was sinking into the water table below. It was costing the city a lot of money just to keep the old City Hall above ground. That led to the decision on construction of a new City Hall with an arts center component. It is set to open in May.

The new Event Center has sparked the development of another commercial district next door. The center will be home to the Indy Fuel hockey team, the Fishers Freight Indoor Football League squad, and the new professional women’s volleyball team, Indy Ignite.

There is also a new Community Center under construction on Hoosier Road and 121st Street, near the elementary school. The facility will include indoor walking and running trails, and an indoor aquatic center, along with many other amenities.

The best part of Fishers? The friendships my wife, Jane, and I have made over the years. It is the people of Fishers who will impress you.

Enjoy Fishers, and for the latest news and podcasts, go to LarryInFishers.com.

A LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER

Welcome to Fishers!

My name is Alison Gatz, owner of Fishers Magazine. As a 24-year resident of Fishers, my family and I extend our warmest welcome.

We moved to the area in 2000 because of - like most people - the great schools, but also because of its close proximity to the highway, making travel to see family easily accessible. We have stayed for so many more reasons! We have absolutely fallen in love with Fishers, and while change is hard sometimes, the growth and change we have seen fills us with excitement. We are excited for so many entertainment options the new Fishers Event Center will bring, the everexpanding trail system, and the new eateries popping up. The possibilities are endless for our vibrant, smart and entrepreneurial community!

Fishers Magazine has been a connector in the community for almost 25 years! Our mission is to be a vital link between residents, businesses and organizations, fostering a sense of connection and belonging within the community. Whether it’s highlighting the mission of local nonprofits, spotlighting small businesses or promoting civic engagement, Fishers Magazine serves as a platform for sharing stories that inspire, inform and unite.

WELCOME TO FISHERS

2024 is the year that we’ve all been waiting for - the opening of the Fishers Municipal Complex featuring the new Fishers Art Center; the debut of the new Fishers Event Center, an 8,000-plus-seat entertainment venue that will serve as the home of the Indy Fuel, Indy Ignite and Fishers Freight; the groundbreaking of Fishers Community Center at Johnson Farm, set to open in 2025; and long-awaited enhancements to the Nickel Plate Trail, including new public art, amenities and trail connections.

It’s never been a more exciting time to call Fishers home. Over the past 150 years our community has transformed from a small farming community, to a sleepy suburb, to a vibrant city featuring world-class destinations, unique dining and retail, and

a state-designated cultural district; a place known as one of the best places to live and one of the safest cities in America, with award-winning schools and an outstanding parks system spanning nearly 800 acres.

2024 also marks a record investment in our neighborhoods and trails. We’ve drastically increased funding for our Neighborhood Vibrancy Grant program, providing residents and HOAs with an additional $650,000 in funding to create new community spaces and keep Fishers beautiful. We recently opened Geist Greenway, a new pedestrian trail in east Fishers that improves connectivity to popular destinations like Geist Park. The Nickel Plate Trail is now fully paved from 96th Street to 146th Street and offers more than five miles of dining and recreation, from coffee shops, breweries, and

restaurants to the natural beauty of Cheeney Creek. As Indianapolis and Noblesville complete their portions of the trail, Fishers residents can easily walk, run and bike between these neighboring communities.

I’m so excited that you’re here, and know that you are part of a thriving community where connection, innovation and transparency are valued. Our doors are always open. I encourage you to come to our monthly City Council meetings, engage our staff at community events, and share your feedback on how we can better serve you.

Yours in Service,

TESCO

Kris Bowen is a notable figure in the engineering and construction realm, carrying on a family legacy in the field. While a family legacy in construction isn’t uncommon, Bowen stands out as a woman making her mark in the traditionally male-dominated industry.

Bowen started her career in the family business, Bowen Engineering, but established Tesco (Total Energy Solutions Company) in 2004, striking out on her own in 2008. Tesco was

established to cater to the evolving needs of the construction industry, mainly focusing on energy and environmental concerns.

“In the beginning, we mostly offered energy efficiency audits,” Bowen says. “Then I met Mark Bowell, and he worked for a crane company. He told me his company was missing opportunities because they didn’t have an XBE partner, so we started working together and things progressed from there.”

Tesco operates through three key lines of business - Total Energy, Total Engineering and EZEV. Total Energy offers many construction-related services including equipment rental, supplies and logistics. Total Engineering, established in 2014 along with partner Don Humphrey, provides engineering and development capabilities to municipal, utility, institutional and private projects. The newest division, EZEV, specializes in a full suite of chargers catering to electric vehicle (EV) users, providing planning, integration, options and maintenance.

“I’ve always considered myself on the green side of things,” Bowen says. “I’ve driven a Tesla for six years, and Mark has driven one for three, so we’re both highly aware of the challenges EV owners

face in terms of navigating how to get a charge when you’re not at home.”

Bowell says universities, hospitals and cities face challenges when incorporating charging stations into their infrastructure planning. Through collaborations like the one they have with Purdue University, Tesco has identified and addressed the unique industry hurdles.

“Although we represent three different manufacturers of EV chargers, one thing we’ve really taken a keen interest in is understanding the most appropriate way to integrate them in your planning,” Bowell says. “That means what you buy, where you put it, the power you use, and then, more importantly, how you maintain and monetize it on the back end.”

Bowen and Bowell have assembled a dedicated team, drawing experience from various sectors within construction and engineering, to cater to the diverse needs of their clients. Tesco is also certified by the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council. Bowell says Bowen is a leader within the construction industry and is serving as an inspiration to others.

“There is a small group of us women within the higher levels of the industry,” Bowen says. “Just by the nature of it, it’s a man’s industry. However, it’s changed recently, and that’s pretty exciting. I think you could say we’re re-crafting that role.” 9955

PARKS AND TRAILS

Hamilton County has 600+ miles of trails and dozens of great parks. Must-see parks in the area for families include local favorites like Central Park in Carmel, Flat Fork Creek Park in

Fishers, Forest Park in Noblesville and Cool Creek Park and Nature Center in Westfield.

IU HEALTH’S $300 MILLION INVESTMENT IN FISHERS MAKING HEADWAY

In the heart of Fishers, IU Health’s expansion of its Saxony hospital campus is rapidly progressing. Those in the area may notice a significant new bed tower, but there is additional work happening inside the walls and beyond.

It’s all part of IU Health’s Fishers Community Impact Project, a $300 million investment into one of the fastest-growing communities in the United States. Within surrounding communities, the investment is adding standalone, outpatient physician office developments, with one open on USA Parkway and another opening this fall in McCordsville. When complete, IU Health Saxony will be renamed IU Health Fishers, and the hospital campus will be nearly twice as big.

“Fishers is the sixth-largest city in Indiana today, and with notable population growth expected each year, could be as much as 50% larger by the year 2040,” said Doug Puckett, president of IU Health’s Indianapolis Suburban Region. “Community members and leaders have told us what they need and want from IU Health to best serve that growth. This investment will allow us to do that.”

Construction crews are putting the final touches on the exterior of the hospital’s new bed tower. On the interior, electrical work has begun. Renovation activities are also in full swing across various areas of the hospital’s first floor, including Imaging, Short Stay and the Emergency Department, where five new patient rooms recently opened.

“Since I’ve been here, our volume has doubled,” said Natalie Zipper, manager of clinical operations in the hospital’s Emergency Department. “When I first came less than two years ago, we were seeing 20 to 30 patients a day. Now, we’re upwards of some days 60.”

Crews are also working on constructing the foundations for the Pediatric Emergency Medicine department, which will be staffed

24/7 by Riley Children’s Health emergency medicine physicians and nurses. It will include eight pediatric emergency rooms with a four-bed observation unit, as well as a separate pediatric entrance, waiting room and triage area.

NATALIE ZIPPER HEADSHOT

The hospital expansion will add: 50 inpatient beds, bringing the total to 88; new and expanded services in Obstetrics & Gynecology, Ear, Nose & Throat, Nephrology, Neurology and Pulmonology; growth of existing specialty programs in Cardiovascular, Gastroenterology, General Medicine, General Surgery, Orthopedics, Primary Care (pediatric and adult) and Urology; and expansion of support services space to accommodate additional staff and higher

patient volumes.

IU Health’s Fishers Community Impact Project will be completed in 2025. Learn more at iuhealth.org.

MIND MECHANICS

Overcoming the stigma of mental health challenges is a significant hurdle that prevents many individuals from seeking help. At Mind Mechanics Mental Health, founded by Kimberly S. Huff, BSN, MSN, APRN, PMHNP-BC, and Kristin A. Manning, MSN, MBA, APRN, FNP-C, PMHNP-BC, the focus is on empowering clients to take control of their mental well-being. With a combined wealth of knowledge, the cofounders have created a practice that prioritizes a well-rounded approach to mental health care.

“We both work a few days a week in a rural outpatient setting, providing psychiatric care,” Huff says. “What we were seeing was that we were not just providing care for mental health issues, but we were also working as a social worker, therapist and sometimes primary care provider. We know the importance of treating the whole individual so they can be the best version of themselves.”

Rather than just treating symptoms, the team at Mind Mechanics recognizes the importance of addressing the underlying causes of mental health issues. Currently their services include medication management and Health Coaching. During client appointments, we may also find it necessary to address sexual health and weight management as each relate to mental health. By acknowledging that mental health is interconnected with overall well-being, they strive to provide comprehensive care tailored to each individual.

“For us, we know people need more than just medication in terms of treating mental health issues,” Manning says. “Also, we dig in and look at what could be causing some mental health problems. Self-esteem issues can come from poor weight management or

30 | April 2024 | TownePost.com
BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

libido issues. All these things factor in, so we can’t ignore them when treating patients.”

The cofounders are passionate about helping clients improve their mental health and breaking stigmas. Clients go through an extensive first appointment addressing the root cause or causes of their mental health concerns. Huff and Manning say they provide individualized care for every client because no two patients are alike. Both will accept clients aged 15 and older, but collaborate with other psychiatric mental

health practitioners at their practice who accept clients aged 6 to 14.

“We accept patients as they are, and no one is going to be judged here,” Huff says. “We want people to know it’s OK to not be OK. They aren’t going to be labeled here. We just want each individual we treat to be the best version of themselves.”

Huff and Manning have over 50 years of combined nursing experience, so they’ve seen it all and know how to handle any issue. They also utilize an extensive network of therapists

who specialize in different areas.

“Life is too short not to feel your best,” Manning says. “If you’re not feeling good mentally, you won’t take care of your health physically, so we believe mental health treatment should be addressed and discussed to change the stigma around it.”

HOW TO GET IN SHAPE 3 Rules for Women

Taking that first step into a gym or group fitness class can be intimidating and quickly derail all your good intentions. How do you find the right fit when you want to get in shape or continue your fitness journey?

1. 2. 3.

Adopt the Goldilocks Rule and find a place that’s not too big and so varied you’re confused about what to do. But also, avoid spots that are too small and can only offer one form of exercise and type of equipment.

Prepare yourself and your family that your fitness journey will require an investment of your time, money, and effort. You need to do all you can to be well and to prevent dementia, cancer, inflammation, and stress. Like the airline safety announcement says, “put on your oxygen mask first, then assist others”

Set up a one-on-one assessment and tour. Take the time to get to know the people and place where you’ll be spending a few hours each week. Also, be sure that they are taking time to get to know you, too by asking “What are your goals? What kind of modifications or challenges do you need?”

WANT TO SEE DIFFERENT RESULTS? READY TO GET STARTED?

Come into Fit Chicks. It’s the only Fishers fitness studio dedicated to women who need a personal trainer, nutrition coaching, and accountability without having to sacrifice comfort and convenience.

What makes up a program that will get a woman to her goal of becoming all she can be? There are four interrelated parts including strength training, interval cardio, and individual nutrition plans based on clean eating. However, the most crucial aspect of this gym is the supportive atmosphere where very small groups of women feel free to just be themselves, appointment after appointment.

One significant factor that sets Fit Chicks apart is its longevity. Fit Chicks! has been a staple in the Fishers fitness space for over 12 years. Roz Harris, the owner and her dedicated team have found the winning formula to keep clients successful and safe.

You can start a trial membership when you buy two personal training sessions for only $69, then receive three more sessions for free. Plus, a one-on-one first-time visitor assessment is included. That’s a deal women are unlikely to find anywhere else –
