New faces on the 2024 council include republicans Tiffanie Ditlevson and John DeLucia, along with democrat Bill Stuart. The GOP will enjoy an 8-1 majority on the council for the four-year period beginning in 2024. Jennifer Kehl was elected to another four-year term as city clerk. Mayor Scott Fadness and City Judge Dan Henke were unopposed. Voters overwhelmingly said yes to a school funding referendum. Hamilton Southeastern (HSE) Schools are expected to have $24 million per year based on the referendum property tax rate for the eightyear period starting in 2024. The final vote total was 15,751 Yes, 6,733 No. One of the first items on the agenda for the new City Council will be the possibility of entering into a citywide trash collection contract with a private firm. Mayor Fadness’ Chief of Staff Jordin Alexander is to brief the council members on the process to use, should the council choose to move forward. Councilor Brad DeReamer is the only member that has said he will oppose any such contract. The HSE school board approved a 6 | January 2024 | TownePost.com

Nataki Pettigrew, chief equity and inclusion officer for HSE Schools, is leaving that position. According to a news release from Washington Township Schools in Marion County, Pettigrew will assume the position of chief academic and diversity, equity and inclusion officer for Washington Township Schools. Hamilton East Public Library Director Edra Waterman is leaving her post and headed to Anderson, where she will assume duties as library director there. Also, the Hamilton County commissioners appointed novelist Susan Crandall to replace Ray Maddalone on the Hamilton East Public Library board. The Hamilton East board revoked the controversial policy moving some books from the young adult section to the adult collection. The vote was 5-1. Micah Beckwith voted no and Tiffanie Ditlevson abstained from voting. Ditlevson, who will be assuming a seat on the Fishers City Council on January 1 of 2024, announced she will be resigning from the library board at the end of 2023. Central Office Administrators Ryan Taylor and Substitute Coordinator Diane Howell

reviewed the substitute teacher program for the HSE school board November 14. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic there were about 400 regular subs, and now the number is 324. There were 66 permanent substitute teachers in HSE Schools prior to the pandemic, and there are now 46. Those with a daily substitute teacher license are paid a $90 daily rate. Efforts are being made to retain and recruit more subs. Taylor told the board HSE Schools is “always in a state of recruitment” for substitute teachers. Fishers will be home to an Indoor Football League (IFL) franchise in the 2025 season. The Fishers Event Center, now under construction, will be home to the squad. Team President Larry McQueary says the IFL features more scoring than the NFL, a 50-yard field, no fair catches and no punts. McQueary and Mayor Scott Fadness appeared on a recent LarryInFishers.com podcast, talking about the IFL team, the Indy Fuel and other events likely to happen at the Event Center. Speaking of the Event Center, Deputy Mayor Elliott Hultgren told the Fishers Board of Public Works and Safety that the construction of the facility is on schedule and set to open in November of 2024. Major Mike Janes was honored by the City Council for 20 years of service to the Fishers Police Department. “Mike has always been a very honest person through those 20 years of knowing him,” says Police Chief Ed Gebhart. “He’s always put the agency, the community and the profession first, and his decision-making always exemplified that.”

Dr. Katie Hill wanted to find a way to reduce the increasing economicrelated euthanasia she was seeing. “At my previous practice, we saw many pet parents coming in with an animal needing emergent surgery,” Hill says. “Often it was a life-saving option, but they just couldn’t afford a $5,000 bill so they opted for

These kennels aren’t made from metal, so they’re much less noisy and scary to animals trying to recover from surgery while also being more sanitary. “One of the many advanced technologies we utilize is electrocautery and vessel sealing,” Hill says. “These reduce surgical time, reduce bleeding, and reduce post-operative complications such as pain, swelling and infection. We also offer Nocita, which is a local anesthetic that lasts up to 72 hours. This gives the pet three days of pain relief without owners having to administer additional pain meds.” To remove some of the anxiety that comes with a sick or injured pet, Hill offers transparent pricing, so the cost of each service is listed on the website. “We wanted to make it so that there aren’t any surprises when you go to pay your bill,” Hill says. “Also, you have the same technician doing your intake and your discharge service with you. We want to ensure we offer personalized care and treat each patient as more than just a number.” Hill says the practice is set up to allow for many sets of eyes on each patient throughout the day. Every room has glass doors and windows, so each patient is carefully monitored throughout the procedure and during recovery. “We want people to know we treat their pet as our own,” Hill says. “I want to make sure people know that we’re not here to take patients away from other practices or providers. We want to complement them and work in conjunction with other veterinarians. We want to provide affordable, emergent and preventative care some patients may have otherwise gone without.” Paw & Purr Surgical and Dental Care is located at 8235 East 116th Street, Suite 210 in Fishers. The practice is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call 317-315-4003 or visit pawandpurrvet.com.

CARING FOR THOSE WITH DEMENTIA, AND THE CAREGIVERS TOO Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photography Provided

ix years ago, Jennifer Coy-Rash was busy raising her two young children when she began noticing that her mother could no longer find her way to her house or to the local library. She observed other odd behavior, too, so she had her 64-year-old mom evaluated, and she was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s. A couple years later, Coy-Rash’s dad received the same diagnosis. While Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia, accounting for 60 to 80% of cases, other types include dementia with Lewy bodies,

frontotemporal, and vascular.

microwave oven.”

When we think of the word “dementia,” we tend to think of memory loss, but it’s actually much more than that. According to Jessie Hillock, owner and founder of The Memory Compass, dementia is a loss of executive function.

It’s important to recognize the difference between normal aging and mild cognitive impairment. With normal aging, you may see changes in one’s ability to multitask, slowed thinking speed, occasionally struggling to find the right word, and sometimes forgetting names and appointments but remembering them later. Also with normal aging, the individual experiencing these issues is the only one who notices them. Mild cognitive impairment, however, is when others take notice. In this instance, an individual’s

“We’re doing a disservice by thinking of dementia as memory loss,” says Hillock, a dementia care specialist. “A person may be able to name the day of the week and the president of the United States, but they can’t operate their cell phone or their

memory loss disrupts life. They experience confusion with time or place, they misplace things and are unable to retrace steps, and they may struggle with understanding visual images and spatial relationships, which can result in car accidents. Also, dementia patients lose their filter. When communicating with someone with dementia, Hillock recommends joining the person in their reality, rather than trying to invite them into yours. For example, say your mother passed away five years ago and your father, who has dementia, asks you where his wife is. Rather than reminding him that she’s been deceased for years, it’s better to say, “I think she’s at the store right now,” or, “What would you like to tell her?” Some people think taking their loved one to the gravesite will help them grasp reality, but that news just serves to confuse and overwhelm them. Another common scenario with dementia patients is realizing that it’s best, for the well-being of all concerned, to take their car keys away. In this instance, what do you do if they keep asking for their keys? Rather than stating that it’s no longer safe for them to drive, it’s better to say, “I took your car to the shop,” or, “Your grandson needed to borrow your car.” “This one is great because if they feel they are helping someone, that makes them feel useful,” says Hillock, who calls these little white lies “therapeutic fiblets.” Karen Rogers (name changed to protect identity) says that providing her husband with a fake set of keys keeps him happy. “Holding those keys makes him feel independent,” says Rogers. One common complaint from families of dementia patients is their refusal to eat or drink. Asking them if they’re hungry or thirsty will likely be met with an upturned nose. If, however, you hand them a plate of food or a glass of water, they’ll often eat or drink it. “Lead them to food and sit down with

them,” says Hillock.

if you have nothing left inside.”

Helping dementia patients find purpose is key. Hillock knows of a lady who leaves the same basketful of laundry for her mother to fold over and over because her mom wants to feel like she’s helping. You may have heard of dementia patients who are given a baby doll or a stuffed animal to “care for.” While this works beautifully in some cases, Hillock points out that it can be anxietyprovoking for others if they are concerned that someone has abandoned their baby or their pet.

A dementia diagnosis can be a scary thing, but keep in mind that there are resources available to help you.

In 2021, 11 million Americans reported providing 16 billion hours of unpaid care for loved ones with dementia. Furthermore, the Central Indiana Council on Aging reports that one in six millennial caregivers who cares for someone living with dementia struggles with mental, physical and financial hardships because of their caregiving role. Therefore, it’s important that we acknowledge the importance of caring for the caregiver as well. Jean Crane, a counselor at Care to Change, says this entails meeting physical, mental, emotional and social needs. This includes eating nutritious foods, engaging in proper exercise and getting adequate rest. It’s also crucial for a caregiver to cut out negative self-talk. “Be less judgmental and more compassionate to yourself,” says Crane. Also curtail your “what-if ” thinking, which only stirs anxiety. It’s better to focus on today, in the given moment. It’s also wise to practice self-gratitude. “It’s impossible to be anxious and grateful at the same time,” says Crane. Emotionally, you should identify, express and process your feelings. In other words, if you’re stressed, breathe. If you’re angry, punch a pillow. If you’re disappointed, confide in a trusted friend. Also, tend to your soul needs. “What brings you rejuvenation?” asks Crane. “What fills your tank? You can’t give

Coy-Rash ended up connecting with a lot of great resources, many through the local senior center, which helped her navigate this new life with her parents. She now is well-versed in Medicaid waiver payments including eligibility criteria, finding providers, and the services that are covered. “Connecting with the proper resources is so helpful,” says Coy-Rash. Senior Citizens Organization, Inc., which serves Hamilton County and surrounding areas, gives members a safe place to meet for fellowship, and also provides information, services and referrals to local agencies and their services. Visit seniorcitizensorg.org for more information.

TIPS FOR HELPING THOSE WITH DEMENTIA • Be patient when their memory fails by letting them try again, and reminding them of what they were talking about. • Make your conversations meaningful rather than just engaging in small talk. When you enter into “their world,” they may have a lot to say. Let them guide the conversation, rather than asking them, “Remember when?” • Avoid letting them read thrillers or watch crime shows before bedtime, because they may wake up thinking they are part of the scene. Stick with lighthearted books and shows in the evenings. • If they are struggling to find the correct word, ask them to point to an object or gesture in order to communicate. • Avoid towering over them so they don’t feel intimidated. Bend down to meet them at eye level. • Speak slowly and clearly, and wait patiently for a response, as it may take 20 or more seconds for them to process what you said. SILVER SNEAKERS

PROMOTING HEALTH AND WELLNESS FOR SENIOR ADULTS Story & Photography Provided

In this context, Silver Sneakers emerges as a valuable program designed specifically for senior citizens, offering a gateway to fitness, social engagement and enhanced quality of life. Silver Sneakers is a nationwide fitness program catering to individuals aged 65 and older, aiming to encourage physical activity in a supportive and enjoyable environment. The program provides eligible members with access to participating gyms, community centers and fitness classes at no additional cost, making it an accessible and inclusive initiative.

16 | January 2024 | TownePost.com

One of the primary benefits of Silver Sneakers is its focus on personalized fitness plans that cater to the unique needs and abilities of senior adults. Tailored exercise routines help to improve flexibility, strength and balance, addressing common concerns associated with aging such as joint stiffness and muscle weakness. By incorporating a variety of activities including aerobic exercises, strength training and flexibility workouts, Silver Sneakers ensures a wellrounded approach to senior fitness. Silver Sneakers goes beyond the traditional gym setting, recognizing that diverse preferences exist among senior adults. The program includes activities such as yoga, dance and aquatic exercise, providing options that cater to different interests and abilities. This variety not only keeps the workouts interesting, but also accommodates individuals with varying levels of physical fitness. Regular exercise has been linked to numerous health benefits, and for senior adults, these advantages become even more significant. Engaging in physical activity through Silver Sneakers has been associated with improved cardiovascular health,

increased bone density and enhanced cognitive function. Moreover, the program helps to manage chronic conditions such as arthritis and diabetes, contributing to an overall healthier and more active lifestyle. The Silver Sneakers program not only benefits the individual participants, but also contributes to reducing health care costs associated with aging-related health issues. By promoting preventive measures through regular exercise, the program plays a role in preventing falls, fractures and other health complications that can lead to hospitalization and increased medical expenses. Silver Sneakers stands as a beacon of health and vitality for senior adults. By combining personalized fitness plans, social engagement and a variety of activities, the program addresses the unique needs of aging individuals, fostering a holistic approach to wellbeing. As society continues to age, initiatives like Silver Sneakers play a crucial role in promoting healthier and more active lifestyles, allowing seniors to embrace their golden years with vigor and vitality.

DRIVING INNOVATION THROUGH EDUCATION Hamilton Southeastern Education Foundation has supported students, educators and staff for more than 20 years. The Hamilton Southeastern Education Foundation (HSEF) was formed in 2001 to benefit every student, every grade, every school within HSE Schools. Since that time, HSEF has invested more than $2 million into our local schools. “HSEF is proud of our more than 20 years of helping drive innovation and our mission, to ensure we keep the next best practices in education coming to HSE classrooms,” said HSEF Executive Director Justin Hirnisey. Today, HSEF invests in all 22 schools and nearly 22,000 students. Through community support, the foundation helps fund innovative teacher- and student-led projects that benefit local schools as well as student scholarships and districtwide projects including mental health and wellness initiatives across all grade levels. Through fundraising efforts, HSEF supported a record amount of grant projects in the fall of 2023, totaling nearly $100,000 at 18 buildings, with themes such as the Science of Reading supports (phonics), projects for students in Exceptional Learners’ classrooms and STEM materials for classes ranging from elementary through high school.

HSEF’s support doesn’t stop at graduation. HSEF also supports students through more than 40 scholarships that are available to seniors from the Class of 2024 at both Fishers and HSE High Schools through an online application at hsefoundation.org.

On Friday, February 23, 2024, HSEF will host its 12th annual Game Day fundraiser at Hub & Spoke. Game Day has become a signature event in Fishers, as the largest annual fundraiser benefiting all 22 Hamilton Southeastern schools and attracting a sellout crowd. The event also hosts the popular Game Day auction, a way for the entire community to support local schools. The auction features hundreds of unique items and experiences, including baskets from each of HSE’s schools and PTOs.

The mission of HSEF is to enhance educational opportunities, inspire excellence and engage the community to foster a legacy of achievement. To learn more, follow @HSEFoundation and check out www.hsefoundation.org or scan here: 24 | January 2024 | TownePost.com

MEAT THE NEWCOMER

COOPER & COW STEAKHOUSE AND BOURBON LOUNGE OPENS ON 116TH STREET Writer / Renee Larr Photographer / Brian Brosmer

Endeavor Restaurant Group opened its newest restaurant, Cooper & Cow Steakhouse and Bourbon Lounge, at the Nickel Plate District in December. It pays homage to the skilled artisans who make the barrels in which bourbon and whiskey are aged. Cooper & Cow dishes up USDA prime cuts of beef alongside sustainably sourced seafood and handcrafted cocktails. “We’re going for a very cozy, intimate speakeasy vibe, while guests enjoy a great cut of steak or seafood while enjoying a classic cocktail,” says Matt Bauer, general manager. “We’re focusing on classic cocktails like old fashioneds and manhattans. We also have a large wine selection, so everyone can find something 26 | January 2024 | TownePost.com

they enjoy.” Bauer says the 4,200-square-foot restaurant is a great place to meet for an after-work cocktail or date night. The space includes a state-of-the-art kitchen, event space, indoor and outdoor dining, convenient parking garage access and street-level parking. “The diversity of restaurants is great for guests,” Bauer says. “We want to be a complement to the other businesses in the Nickel Plate District. I think we can all play off of each other’s strengths.” Bauer says the small menu allows the kitchen to execute each dish flawlessly. Steaks and seafood are served alongside

comfort-food side dishes such as creamed spinach and pork belly mac and cheese. He says they plan to add select specials as they learn what the Fishers community wants. “It’s exciting to bring Cooper & Cow to our neighbors in Nickel Plate District and surrounding north side area,” Bauer says. “This restaurant, which is well-aligned with the city’s vision, is another keystone to the growth and development in the Nickel Plate District. We’re looking forward to quickly becoming a community partner.” Cooper & Cow is located at 8626 East 116th Street in Fishers. For more information, visit cooperandcow.com.

TASTY TAKE

BE SURE TO BRING YOUR APPETITE TO NEW KOREAN TACO CONCEPT TAKO SEOUL Writer / Renee Larr Photography Provided

Mycoe Andrews is satisfying taco lovers’ souls in Fishers by opening Tako Seoul, a Korean taqueria. The fast-casual concept opened in December, and is dishing up big, bold Korean flavors in traditional Mexican tacos. “A lot of our flavors are Korean but served Mexican style,” Andrews says. “We sell marinated Korean beef and teriyaki marinated chicken tacos and quesadillas. Or, guests can build their own, bowled, rolled - a burrito - or fold - a quesadilla. One thing we do differently is our fried rice option, and guests really love our signature Tako sauce.” Andrews started with catering, but held a pop-up event in April at Fishers Test Kitchen that changed everything. He says his Instagram followers came through in a big way. Almost 200 people showed up and loved his food. “I wanted to open my own restaurant before the event, but after it, everything changed,” Andrews says. “Instagram blew up, and people were always asking me when I

was opening.” However, finding the perfect location proved to be an issue. Andrews looked at four other spaces. He wanted to stay in the Fishers area due to the success of his pop-up event at Fishers Test Kitchen. However, after four failed locations, Andrews seriously considered finding a spot in Brownsburg, when fate stepped in. “I was on Fishers Chatter’s Facebook page and saw that Moe’s Southwest Grill was closing,” Andrews says. “I thought it was the perfect location, so the next morning at the crack of dawn I went over there to inquire about the space.” Andrews says fan favorites include the Maejor Quesadilla, a mixture of sweet teriyaki, fiery spicy chicken, and double the protein. He says the specialty sauces set Tako Seoul apart from its competitors. Tako Seoul offers catering and is located at 8235 East 116th Street, Suite 201 in Fishers. BREAKING GROUND IU HEALTH SAXONY EXPANSION WILL BRING NEW FEATURES AND SERVICES

Story & Photography Provided by IU Health

Ten years after opening a 38-bed, specialtycare-focused hospital at 136th Street and Interstate 69 in Fishers, Indiana University Health has broken ground on its expansion of IU Health Saxony Hospital - soon to be IU Health Fishers. The $300 million investment will include a significant expansion of the IU Health Saxony Hospital campus and services, and the addition of off-site, outpatient access to primary care and specialists to more holistically meet the needs of one of Indiana’s fastest-growing communities. In recognition of this growth, this community investment will include a renaming of the hospital campus to IU Health Fishers, to be phased in throughout the duration of the project. The planned expansion will add standalone outpatient physician office developments in the community, and grow the square footage of the hospital campus by nearly 50%. The hospital expansion will add: • 50 inpatient beds, bringing the total to 88. • Riley Children’s Health emergency medicine services, including a pediatric emergency department to be built adjacent to the adult emergency department. • New and expanded services in obstetrics and gynecology; ear, nose and throat; nephrology; neurology; and pulmonology. • Growth of existing specialty programs in cardiovascular, gastroenterology, general medicine, general surgery, orthopedics, primary care (pediatric and adult), and urology. • Expansion of support-services space to accommodate additional staff and higher patient volumes. “Fishers is the sixth-largest city in Indiana today, and with notable population growth expected each year, could be as

much as 50% larger by the year 2040,” says Doug Puckett, president of IU Health’s Indianapolis Suburban Region, which includes IU Health North, Saxony, Tipton and West hospitals. “Community members and leaders have told us what they need and want from IU Health to best serve that growth. Thanks to the vision and investment from our executive leadership team, as well as our regional and system board of directors, we’re able to meet these needs.” As part of the investment, Riley Children’s Health will begin work on a dedicated, pediatric emergency department, which will be staffed 24/7 by Riley Children’s emergency medicine physicians and nurses. It will include eight pediatric emergency rooms with a four-bed observation unit, as well as a separate pediatric entrance, waiting

room and triage area. “When you’re a parent and your child’s life and health are at risk, confidence in the health care team means everything,” says Gil Peri, president of Riley Children’s Health. “While it’s never our wish that anyone needs emergency care, this community can rest assured in knowing they’ll have close access to our highly skilled Riley emergency department team members in the moments where they need it most.” Dubbed the Fishers Community Impact Project due to its scope both on and off the hospital campus, the project timeline will vary for the individual elements included. The hospital expansion is expected to be complete in 2025 and will double the hospital’s workforce.

NONPROFIT OF THE MONTH SPONSORED BY

HUMANE SOCIETY FOR HAMILTON COUNTY Writer / Renee Larr Photography Provided

SPONSORED BY

Many Hamilton County residents are already aware of the Humane Society for Hamilton County’s hard work in finding homes for local animals. The shelter is Indiana’s open-admission, truly no-kill shelter, and because of that, the nonprofit is at a critical point in its history. The facility is experiencing dire overcrowding, and sheltering a record number of dogs and cats. “We always have a lot of cats, but right now it’s more of an issue with dogs,” says Rebecca Stevens, president and chief executive officer. “We’ve seen an increase in the number of dogs coming in and a decrease in adoptions simultaneously. It’s not just us, but the animal welfare community as a whole is in crisis.”

30 | January 2024 | TownePost.com

Stevens says there are various reasons for the increase in unwanted pets, but the largest is backyard breeding. She says it’s running rampant throughout the state unchecked. Stevens says the organization had to rent a 20-foot trailer to help manage the overflow. The shelter has dogs of all sizes, breeds and ages looking for their forever home. Stevens says the Hamilton County community has always been loyal and supportive with their time and money, but now she needs residents to come in and adopt. Stevens is making a desperate plea. “Please consider coming in and looking at all these available dogs,” Stevens says. “We’re now in this horrible situation where dogs are just sitting here waiting

to be adopted and taken home. Even in the most beautiful facility like ours, they can’t wait forever. It’s a race against time every day. We have dogs here on the cusp of decline because they get depressed. They can’t emotionally handle being here.” She says she wishes people would open their minds to the possibility that there is a dog in her facility that is worthy of their love and home. Stevens says she hopes people can feel the adoption experience and change a pet’s life. She says it’s a profound experience. The Humane Society for Hamilton County is located at 10501 Hague Road in Fishers, and is open from noon to 5 p.m. every day except Wednesday. Call them at 317-773-4974. Walk-ins are welcome, and appointments can be made. To see a current list of available animals, visit hamiltonhumane.com.
