VIEWING PLEASURE

EMAGINE ENTERTAINMENT REVAMPING HAMILTON TOWN CENTER THEATER Writer / Jon Shoulders Photography Provided

Paul Glantz, co-founder and chairman of Michigan-based Emagine Entertainment, says the company’s theater facility in Hamilton Town Center, formerly an IMAX theater run by Goodrich Quality Theaters, will provide a fresh, maximally comfortable experience for moviegoers. “We’ve got a whole set of detailed plans and specifications, and we’re going to be giving it a real facelift,” Glantz says. “Our mandate is to provide our guests with an exemplary entertainment experience. It’s about

comforts, service, smiling teammates, and 1,000 details to make the experience great.” Goodrich Quality Theaters closed the space in March of last year. Emagine leaders plan to keep the theater open throughout the construction process. “We think Noblesville is an incredibly attractive market for us, and we’re thrilled to have the opportunity,” Glantz says. “We know it’s a suburb of Indianapolis that has grown and grown, and it fits within our wheelhouse.”

8 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2021 / TownePost.com

After opening multiple locations in Michigan, the Emagine Entertainment team opened theaters in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Illinois. “The opportunity to expand in Indiana is a real pleasure for us,” Glantz says. The company plans to complete the renovations for the building in phases, closing one wing of the facility at a time. Glantz hopes to have all construction complete by the winter holiday season this year.

“All the chairs will be replaced with heated, powered recliners and will be built in a way that there’s no such thing as an obstructed view,” Glantz explains. “We’re going to move the bar so it’s more visible, and we’ll be making some alterations to the concession stand. We’ll be bringing in brick-oven pizza, which will be made right in front of our guests, and expanding the food and beverage menu pretty dramatically.” Glantz adds that Emagine also plans to replace the existing IMAX screen with the

company’s own large-format EMAX screen. “There’s an enormous amount of ceiling height in that particular auditorium, and we’re actually going to have what we call a skybox in that auditorium,” Glantz says. “It will be a private seating area with about 20 chairs, and will have room for a portable bar and will have a restroom. It will be a really unique place in which to watch the big blockbuster films as a private viewing experience up above the rest of the guests.”

The facility will also be available for private rentals. “We do a lot of work with philanthropic organizations, with birthday parties and family events,” Glantz says, adding that he’s seen a continuous uptick in business since January. “Hollywood just started dealing us a better hand, and now we’ve got more films that folks find compelling that will be coming out. When folks feel like they’ve got to come out to see the new “Top Gun” or James Bond movie, that will be what I think is the real

acid test for the recovery of our industry.” Glantz considers moviegoing to be one of the safest indoor activities available to individuals and families. “There has not been a single report of COVID-19 among moviegoers worldwide,” Glantz says. “Most people wouldn’t necessarily realize that, and it stems from the fact that everybody’s looking in the same direction, and folks aren’t facing each other, so there’s less opportunity for direct transmission. On top of that, the engineering requirements for a congregate facility like a movie theater require a lot of air displacement. We’re bringing in a lot of fresh air as our HVAC systems are running.” Glantz feels that amenities such as a bar with craft beer, specialty cocktails and wine, along with comfortable stadium seating and a food menu with choices beyond standard theater fare, will help to increase business as the company works toward completion of renovations. “I’ve never predicted that our business would bounce back like a rubber band, but my expectation is that once the venue is renovated to our standards, and we’ve got the elements of food and beverage and the comfortable seating, then I think word of mouth will drive increased attendance,” he says. “I see the business growing throughout 2022.” Glantz adds that Emagine Entertainment’s reception in the Noblesville community bodes well for the future of the theater. “We have been welcomed with open arms,” Glantz says. “We bought the liquor license that was there from the prior owner, and Hamilton County has been very gracious in allowing that liquor permit to be transferred. The governmental support has been strong, and I think the community support will be even better once we demonstrate that we’re good to our promise, which is that we’re going to create the best moviegoing experience in the marketplace.” For more information, visit emagineentertainment.com/theatres/emaginenoblesville. 10 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2021 / TownePost.com

“BLAZING THE TRAIL” NEW FPD MURAL DEPICTS COMMUNITY LIFE IN FISHERS

Writer / Renee Larr Photography Provided

A new mural graces the Fishers Police Department (FPD) building. The 1,000-square-foot piece of artwork depicts students from Fishers High School and Hamilton Southeastern High School, the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater, the Bell Ford Bridge, and Harlej, the K-9 officer killed in 2019. Professional artist Becky Hochhalter of Terre Haute designed and painted the mural, titled “Blazing the Trail.” Hochhalter is a self-taught artist who has been creating different types of art since childhood.

“The mural itself is about the current and future use of the area around the Nickel Plate Trail,” Hochhalter says. “I also wanted to show a night-and-day representation of the use of the area. There is an evening concert at the amphitheater, a couple enjoying a beer at an outdoor table, the two high school logos, the covered bridge, and a young girl interacting with Harlej.” The design process took several months. “We started the design phase in January,” Hochhalter says. “I went through a few revisions, adding in different elements in a flowing design and a pleasing way. The 14 / SEPTEMBER 2021

Fishers Arts and Culture Commission and I went back and forth a few times, and we had input from the police department.” Hochhalter was thrilled to be chosen as the artist to represent the City of Fishers. “I know there was some stiff competition,” Hochhalter says. “It was thrilling to represent the interaction between the police department and the community.” Fishers Police Chief Ed Gebhart is happy to be a part of the new artwork. “Our community is reflected in the ‘Blazing

the Trail’ mural,” Gebhart says. “From our schools to community members, iconic landmarks and public safety, this mural captures the essence of our city and what the future holds for our community. The Fishers Police Department is excited to be a part of the new developments along the Nickel Plate Trail. We are proud of the ‘Blazing the Trail’ mural, and all that it represents for our agency and our community.” The mural was completed in five weeks. “I live in Terre Haute, but I have a daughter who lives in Brownsburg,” Hochhalter says. “I stayed with her and drove from Brownsburg each day. Unfortunately, the weather delayed painting a little bit.” Hochhalter had special assistance painting the mural, from someone very SEPTEMBER 2021 / 15

close to Harlej. “I invited Officer [ Jarred] Koopman, Harlej’s handler, to come paint Harlej’s portrait with me,” Hochhalter says. “One day he came out with his wife and children, and they painted for about two hours. It was really sweet.” Hochhalter feels grateful to work closely with the FPD, the Fishers Arts and Culture Commission, and Ross Hilleary, assistant director of planning and zoning. “It was such a smooth process,” Hochhalter says. “I’m especially grateful to Ross because he was there to help me work out any kinks in the beginning. He also helped me get access to the FPD building where I was storing my supplies. Everyone throughout the whole process was great.” For more information about Hochhalter and her work, visit beckyhochhalter.com.

BACH TO ROCK NEW MUSIC SCHOOL IS ROCKING OUT IN FISHERS Writer / Julie Yates Photographer / Hillary Gordon

Bach to Rock is an education-based music school that offers private lessons for a multitude of instruments, group classes, birthday parties, and camps throughout the year. Open since February, it is staffed by professional musicians, and provides options for young children through adults at all levels. Co-owners Kellie Miles-Fink, and Jen and Andy Flickner, are excited to bring the facility’s tradition-based curriculum, applied to modern music, to the Fishers community.

Miles-Fink is a former elementary school teacher with a master’s degree from Marian University, was involved in university choirs, and minored in music at Indiana University. She became involved with the franchise in October of 2018 as an early childhood instructor at Bach to Rock Carmel. A few months later she became artistic director. When the Flickners, who own the Carmel school, wanted to open up a second site, she joined them as co-owner and director of the Fishers location. “We immediately thought of Fishers 18 / SEPTEMBER 2021

when we were considering where to open a second school,” Miles-Fink says. “It’s a fabulous metro area close to Noblesville, McCordsville and the Geist area. We wanted to reach out to those families that are too far away from the Carmel school. Plus, Fishers encourages the arts and there isn’t anything quite like Bach to Rock around.” While private lessons are the largest part of Bach to Rock, group lessons are an important facet as well. Students as young as 3 years old can participate in Rock City, a class that allows them to explore a variety

of instruments and is based on basic music theory concepts. Kids n Keys is for 5- to 7-year-old children. In this class, the focus is on learning to read music while doing group activities and enjoying individual piano stations. The result is ocular and fine-motor growth. Other classes include Rock n Roll for toddlers, Rock Band, Glee Club, DJ lessons, and group instrument lessons that help students learn to play together. Price points vary. Group lessons for younger students are around $15 to $25 per session. Private lessons run $35 for 30 minutes and, as individuals get more advanced, $65 per

hour. Regardless of the type of class, a set curriculum based on theory and music reading is followed. Traditional teaching is the foundation, but it is applied to music of all genres to make sure students are engaged. “We have our own state-of-the-art recording studio,” Miles-Fink says. “As students rise up in levels, they receive the opportunity to record a song. Likewise, classes or camps, and parties such as Rock Band or DJ, record a mini mix. We also offer the chance to perform out in the community for those who take private lessons. I really love it. I wanted to work with kids but felt

SEPTEMBER 2021 / 19

that teaching in a school wasn’t a fit. I came across Bach to Rock online, and I feel I lucked into meeting the Flickners. When I began working at the Carmel school, I immediately thought this was what I was meant to do.” Bach to Rock is located at 12514 East 116th Street in Fishers. THE VILLAGE OF MERICI

BUILDING A VILLAGE Writer / Julie Yates Photography Provided

The Village of Merici is a community for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) who are supported and guided while making their own independent choices. About a third of the individuals involved in the nonprofit, 501(c)3 organization’s programs reside at the Merici Village Apartments, located at 5707 Lawton Loop East Drive.

during a one-million-dollar match challenge ending October 1st. Meeting this monetary goal will not only breathe new life into an old building but will positively impact the lives of IDD individuals and their families.

The second building will result in 38 additional housing units and be restored in the same manner as the existing Merici Village Apartments, which after being decommissioned in 1991, remained empty until renovated. Built between 1903 and 1904, the character of the building remains Currently, 200 individuals are on a waiting with high ceilings and an exposed original list as funds are being raised to renovate beam in every apartment. Building renewal is just a small facet of the transformation taking place within the Village of Merici model. Different than a traditional group home setting, it was opened in 2014 after several years of gathering input from families and researching similar sites across the United States and internationally. The community is a place where, with the support of a staff of 50 coaches, IDD individuals are free to make their own choices regarding activities and friendships. Residents, who pay a rent of 30% of their income, have varying disabilities such as cerebral palsy, down syndrome, or autism. Ages range from mid-twenties to middleaged. employment or volunteer outside of the apartment building. Some need 24-hour care for most life skills. All are supported in finding opportunities for as much or little involvement they desire.

“I like everybody and I like that I get to do my own thing like shooting pool and music therapy,” says resident Steve Mailloux. “I volunteer at the VA and go to Sertoma Bingo and Lunch each month.”

“For Angie, her life changed because she got 20 friends,” says Beth Becher, mother of resident Angie Cain. “It transformed our lives because she was so much happier. She saw her sisters grow up and move out of the family house, and she wanted to do that too. She wanted friends she could choose and she was able to develop those relationships.”

“There was nothing for Steve after he graduated from high school,” says Mailloux’s sister Lisa Fohl. “He and his friends didn’t drive and they lost contact with each other. Loneliness can be the biggest disability of all. The friendships he has formed and his activities make his life rich. This community is not a place, it is an experience.”

Cain flourishes under the support of Village of Merici. Every week she works one day at Kohl’s Department Store, three days at YMCA and one day at Down Syndrome Indiana. One of her favorite activities is gardening club. She raises tomatoes, kale, lettuce, herbs and flowers which she shares with others and uses in her kitchen when she cooks her meals. She is a member of the cooking club and with the help of a coach, she meal plans and makes a grocery list.

The inside of Cain’s and Mailloux’s apartments reflect their own individual interests and tastes. Cain’s looks like any other typical millennial-style dwelling. The décor looks Pinterest-influenced and her own colorful artwork hangs on the walls. Mailloux’s apartment is filled with gifts from family and friends such as a replica of a tandem bike, a retro lunch box, sports logos and huge oversize posters of television shows he loved growing up such as Knight Rider. “When you are a parent or guardian of an IDD individual, you wonder, ‘What will happen to them as I age and after I have passed on?’ Village of Merici answers that. The Village meets people where they are. It allows individuals with disabilities to be independent and live their own lives,” Fohl says. PARKS PLACE PUB NEW BAR AND EATERY OPENS ON 116TH STREET Writer / Renee Larr Photography Provided by Robby Berry and Parks Place Pub

Parks Place Pub was born out of necessity. Owners Matt Schlueter, Remington Ramsey and Matt Whitlow saw the need for a late-night sports bar and restaurant in downtown Fishers. “We all work in the same location in Fishers,” Schlueter says. “Downtown is so vibrant and awesome, but we don’t have a lot of places to eat or grab a cold beer after work. When Brixx went out, we thought it would be funny if we opened a restaurant 22 / SEPTEMBER 2021

there. We kept saying if nobody else is going to do it, then we might as well. We started taking it a little more seriously, and we inquired about the space. After a few months we had a negotiated lease.” None of the three owners have restaurant experience, and they work full-time jobs in finance and real estate. “None of us have any restaurant experience, but I don’t think that’s a bad thing,” Schlueter says. “We all have a lot of creative ideas, and we’re not jaded by the industry. We have a fresh perspective on it.”

Those creative ideas were helpful when developing the menu of cocktails and food. Menu items include traditional sports-bar fare like burgers and wings, as well as new, unique items like a fried peanut butter and jelly sandwich. “We have some items that will be talking points for Parks Place Pub,” Schlueter says. “We have something called a horseshoe on the menu. It’s a central Illinois thing. It’s an open-faced sandwich served on toast with fries and cheese on it. We took that idea and then put an Indiana spin on it. Our horseshoe has a tenderloin on it instead of a hamburger.” The group of friends developed the menu based on items that all three owners like to eat while out watching a game.

NEW QB IN TOWN GETTING TO KNOW INDIANAPOLIS COLTS QUARTERBACK CARSON WENTZ Writer / Seth Johnson Photography Provided by the Indianapolis Colts

Indianapolis Colts Quarterback Carson Wentz has heard the rumors and can confirm - he and Prince Harry are two different people despite their similar looks. “We’re not the same person,” Wentz says with a laugh. “I hate to break it to some people, but nope.” Traded from the Philadelphia Eagles to the Indianapolis Colts in March of 2021, Wentz follows in the footsteps of the now-retired Phillip Rivers, who took the Colts to the playoffs in his lone year with the team. Drafted at number two by Philadelphia in the 2016 NFL Draft, Wentz won a Super Bowl with the Eagles in 2017, where he first played under current Colts Head Coach Frank Reich, who served as Philadelphia’s offensive coordinator. Although born in Raleigh, North Carolina, Wentz spent most of his upbringing in North Dakota - a state he still has many ties to today. “Both of my parents are there, and I have a bunch of friends and stuff back there,” Wentz says. “I grew up

there, went to high school there and went to college there. North Dakota is definitely home. I love that place and love those people back there.” While Indianapolis may be completely new terrain for him and his family, Wentz at least has a familiar face here in town with Reich. “I loved playing for him as my coach and loved working together with him as my offensive coordinator,” Wentz says. “We just really got along well off the field and really connected on a deeper level spiritually. I just thought we had a really good thing in Philly working together, so I think we were both mutually excited to get back and work together again.” While Carson, his wife Madison, and their 1-year-old daughter Hadley have been busy settling in, the Indianapolis community has made sure to welcome them with open arms. “The way we’ve been welcomed and embraced has just been really cool, both football-wise from the organization but also in the community,” Wentz says. “It just seems like such a family-friendly environment. Everyone’s rooting for you, pulling for you and wants you to succeed.”

The first of these is called Thy Kingdom Crumb. “That goes around and gives out free food to anybody and everybody, and also talks with people on the streets, shares the gospel and prays with people,” Wentz says of Thy Kingdom Crumb. “Anybody and everybody is welcome. When he’s not out on the gridiron, Wentz also stays busy with a nonprofit he started called the Audience of One (AO1) Foundation. A devout Christian, Wentz has tried to use his platform for good since entering the NFL. “When I was a rookie, I knew that my purpose was so much bigger than throwing touchdowns on Sunday,” he says. “Coming to my faith when I was in college, I knew there was a platform that was different. Lord knows how long I’ll have that platform, so as a rookie I said, ‘Let’s start the foundation. I don’t know how many years I’ll be in this position to have a voice, have eyes on me and make a difference, so while we’ve got it, let’s make the most of it.’ ” The AO1 Foundation consists of three separate ministries according to Wentz.

how we can get involved in a similar fashion out here in the Indianapolis area.” The AO1 Foundation also facilitates an Outdoor Ministry, which aims to serve children with life-threatening illnesses or other life-altering medical situations in order to foster a passion for outdoor activities and bring people closer to God through discipleship. Last but not least, the AO1 Foundation is involved in a sports complex in the country of Haiti. “It’s just been really cool to see God working through it and for us to be obedient to where he calls us to go,” says Wentz of the AO1 Foundation and its three ministries. “It’s been fun to really see lives being impacted and changed, not only on this earth but also for eternity, and that’s really where the greatest reward has been.” Currently living on Indy’s northside, Wentz says he and his family have already grown to love Indianapolis.

“We love it out here,” he says. “It’s got that small-town feel, but it’s definitely a bigger city that has everything you need from restaurants to family activities. There are so many things to do. I think the culture around here and the community atmosphere really fits me and my family perfectly, and we’re excited about it.” As for his inner outdoorsman, Wentz says he looks forward to exploring all of the nature Indiana has to offer as well. “The hunting, fishing and everything around in the countryside out here seems really exciting for me to dabble with, get out there and enjoy,” Wentz says. ROI SEARCH GROUP PROVIDES A ONE-STOP-SHOP FOR RECRUITMENT, CAREER TRANSITION & TRAINING

“People want you to care about them before you pitch a job,” McCreery Four years ago, Stacey McCreery organically built ROI Search says. “Strong communication leads Group (ROISG), a local, women-owned recruitment and executive to really good outcomes when you search firm offering permanent placement, contract services, listen to people and understand outplacement and career services, and training. She had no problem what’s important to them.” choosing a name for her company. “I wanted people to know when you do business with us, there will always be a return on your investment,” says McCreery, who started the firm after working for a decade as a hiring manager at a large academic health system. Having been in the shoes of hiring managers, she knew their struggles firsthand. “Recruiters are a dime a dozen,” says McCreery, President. “What makes us unique is that we’ve spent time on the other side.” When clients ask for help in locating just the right candidate, the ROISG team is proactive in finding the best individual for each position. “We do 100% passive recruitment, meaning we go out and find that person rather than waiting for people to apply,” McCreery says. “We find passive candidates who are qualified for that role and follow-up with a unique process to help determine if they are a good match.”

At ROISG, it’s not just about checking a box.

“We’re not just going to check a box when the person doesn’t meet any of your criteria,” McCreery says. It’s important candidates meet 100% of the requirements of the position they are being recruited.”

“I WANTED PEOPLE TO KNOW WHEN YOU DO BUSINESS WITH US, THERE WILL ALWAYS BE A RETURN ON YOUR INVESTMENT.” —STACEY McCREERY

This is why since the firm’s inception they have only had a 1% turnover in all of their placements. When they reach out to candidates, they get to know the person.

Julia Moffett, Senior Talent Manager

For instance, if a company is seeking a Ph.D. candidate with ample experience, ROISG will find somebody 100% qualified, plus have the diversity representing that community. Last year, they placed 49% diverse candidates. While that’s nothing new for ROI Search Group, McCreery emphasizes how important it is to represent the communities served. “If you have a Burmese population, for instance, you need to have representation of that population in the candidates you supply to the client McCreery adds.

Over the past four years, the company has continued to expand their services as clients’ needs have grown. Their services include providing a 360 solution with regard to Permanent Placement, Executive search (for specialized searches or VP and above),

Contract Services (with a specialization in Revenue Cycle and IT, Epic & Cerner, Software Development, and Coding), Outplacement & Career Transition Services (for organizations and individuals), and, new to their offerings, Customized Training Programs with some that are grant funded. During the pandemic, when people were stuck at home making sourdough bread and assembling 1,000-piece puzzles, McCreery was building a training program. Despite the ominous uncertainty that plagued society, McCreery had hopes we would get to the other side. When we did, however, she knew companies would be struggling to find talent. As a result, ROISG is holding monthly training sessions through March 2022 with 100 seats in each session. The 40-hour training program implementing best practices and is fully funded by Indiana’s NextLevel Training Grant at no cost to organizations. The training program, called “Professional Development for Team Members and Leaders: Best Practices for Budgeting & Human Capital,” includes topics such as Performance Management, Recruiting Styles & Techniques, Retention & Turnover, Revenue Cycle Management, Financial Budgets, Managing Organizational Change, Using Social Media for Recruitment, Communication, Conflict, Crucial Conversations, Diversity & Inclusion in the Workforce, and more. McCreery took the training a step further by applying for state accreditation and is the 80th school to be accredited. “I was over the moon to get that accreditation,” McCreery says. “It validated that this is exactly where we should be in helping organizations in that 360 approach of being that one-stop-shop.” Not only can organizations eliminate the need to go to multiple vendors but also they can use the grant to get 40 hours of training covered, then be reimbursed for it all. Companies can send 10 employees to the training but also get recordings.

Having the recordings to reference is great as attendees have a tendency to get overwhelmed in training and only retain 25% of what they heard. This allows them to revisit the training at a later date or when they are at a different stage in their career. McCreery encourages sharing the information with colleagues in their organization as she encourages training. She’s all about paying it forward. “If you pass this on, we can have a big ripple effect,” she says. It’s crucial that companies train and retain their staff because talent is in high demand right now. “If you don’t train your own staff and you lose them, it’ll make things harder for your organization,” says McCreery, who has found that people love escaping work for a week to get training that takes them to the next level in their career. “That’s what our whole company is about,” McCreery says. “We’re ready to help companies with whatever they need: recruiting, training and outplacement.” In the past four years, they have recruited in 18 states, which is rather remarkable. Plus, by the close of 2020, they had looked at a total of 29,000 candidates (more since then). We have built this company organically from the ground up, and we are proud to be here doing this work right here in Fishers. “Where we’ve been and where we’re going is very exciting,” McCreery adds. ROI Search Group is located at 14074 Trade Center Drive, Suite 1400 in Fishers. For more information, call 317-588-8138 or visit them online at roisearchgroup.com.

ACTON ACADEMY FISHERS

EDUCATIONAL FACILITY ALLOWS FOR A NEW WAY OF LEARNING

TownePost.com / SEPTEMBER 2021 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / 33

Writer / Megan Arszman Photographer / Robby Berry

A new wave of education has debuted in Fishers with the opening of the new Acton Academy, an innovative, free-learning facility. The school, comprised of two studios in Fishers, has started its first year of operation in Hamilton County for learners aged 5 to 15. “Our mission at Acton is to inspire every child who enters our doors to find a calling to change the world,” says Erin Duros, the founder and director of the Fishers Acton Academy. “We reference their learning path as the ‘Hero’s Journey.’ ” Duros explains that the school focuses on a growth mindset for all the learners, allowing them to choose their own educational path. “We are a learner-driven environment,” she says. “We are a mixed-age space, which shifts the power from the adults to the learners, so they take charge of their own learning by creating their own choices with their daily goal setting.” A noticeable difference between Acton Academy and traditional schools is that the classrooms are called studios, the students are called learners, and the teachers are called guides. There are two studios, one housing 5- to 8-year-old children and the other housing 9- to 15-year-old children for the first year. A typical Acton Academy studio maxes out at 28 learners, but this year the program is debuting with a maximum of 18 per studio to help ease the transition of the learners from a traditional setting to the open concept that Acton provides.

34 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2021 / TownePost.com

“At your traditional school, each student is limited by grade-level content, but here our curriculum is determined by our learners,” Duros says. For example, at a traditional school a child might be in kindergarten learning a kindergarten-level curriculum. However, a learner might be working at third-grade level for math because that’s where she’s at, while she might be at a lower level for reading. It’s an individualized approach to learning. Once learners hit a middle school age, they begin apprenticeships. Duros explains that entrepreneurship is growing immensely, with innovative and passionate ideas. During the last seven weeks of school, starting in middle school, they sign up for an apprenticeship so that by the time they graduate high school, each learner will have seven to eight apprenticeships. The program encourages growth in a learner’s critical thinking skills. With one guide per studio, the guide is there to encourage the learners to think for themselves. Questions are never answered by the guide. Instead, the guide empowers the learner to find the answers on their own through more questioning, using the resources at their disposal and working alongside peers. Learners spend the morning on course skills, with afternoons dedicated to “quests,” or project-based learning. Acton Academy’s two Fishers locations are at 8865 South Street, and at 8100 East 106th Street. For more info, visit actonfishers.com.

Ed Woolwine

SWINGING FOR THE FENCES FISHERS SPORTS ACADEMY CELEBRATES 5TH ANNIVERSARY Writer / Ryan Kennedy Photographer / Eli Beaverson

to become business partners, and opened up Fishers Sports Academy.

Five years ago, Ed Woolwine saw a need in his community and decided to address it.

“It’s a baseball and softball academy, along with movement, speed and agility training,” Woolwine says. “We opened it as a community-based program. For the first two years it went well. We developed this for the need of our community - a training facility that’s in close proximity to Fishers. We went to the baseball board and we had all the travel teams come into our facility. We also tried to reach out to softball, and at first we had a few, but not many to come into Fishers Sports Academy. In recent years, people have wanted bigger and better.”

“At that time five years ago, or actually even before that, I used to be the travel director for youth sports here in Fishers,” says Woolwine, an Ohio native who moved to Indiana in 1994. “It was hard for teens to find indoor practice space and training. At that time when I was the travel director, I would sublet places that had open space during the winter. I would sublet back to leagues so they could have their travel teams in there, and it was cost efficient.” Woolwine was introduced to co-owner Kyle Bach, who he says was looking for space in the community and had interest in opening up a place of his own. The two men decided

Woolwine says that over time, Fishers Sports Academy lost the travel teams it relied on for business to other, larger facilities around central Indiana.

36 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2021 / TownePost.com

“Then COVID happened,” he says. Because of this, according to Woolwine, Fishers Sports Academy has not grown in the way he and Bach anticipated five years ago. While Fishers Sports Academy still trains full teams, the facility has come to rely on its personal training program. “We do a very good job personal training - one on one training,” Woolwine says. “We have wonderful instructors. They’ve helped us sustain that market through personal relationships, strong training and development, and withstanding the competition with our staff. Personal training doesn’t leave because the place is bigger. Personal training stays from the expertise and the energy you give to a young man or young woman.” The 10 trainers on staff work with individual

clients on everything from pitching and hitting to speed and agility. Each training regimen is customized specifically to address each client’s needs. “I and my instructors evaluate them on their first session, either on hitting or pitching, and then we have a conversation even on our movement training, which is speed and agility,” Woolwine says. “Then we have a discussion with their parents on the best avenue to follow and cost associated with that.” Woolwine says this attention to detail sets Fishers Sports Academy apart from its competition and, more importantly, helps clients achieve their potential. Woolwine says he never claims credit when a client develops and goes on to receive a scholarship. The facility never markets itself as tied to one client. “At the end of the day it’s their work, and extra work they put in after their lessons, that catapults them to the next level,” he says. Woolwine says he and his staff let clients know what they need to work on when they’re not training at the facility. “We do that one-on-one with every kid all the time, and it’s their effort that gets them to the next level,” he says. “It’s not one individual instructor. It’s not one individual, or it’s not one facility or academy. It’s all on them for how they process the information, where they take it, and what they do with it.” Five years since it opened, Fishers Sports Academy hasn’t grown the way Woolwine and Bach wanted, but that doesn’t mean they haven’t achieved their goal of providing a service to the Fishers community. “We’re both still here,” Woolwine says. “We’re still surviving. For us, for a 14,573-squarefoot facility, we are not going to be all things to all people because of the space, but what we can do is be the development piece for kids in our community.”
