DEAR CLASS OF 2020, The Class of 2020 will long be associated with transition, change, and challenge. In this last quarter of the school year, we have had to rethink your learning experiences and most of the traditional milestones that mark your passage as students to graduates. The COVID-19 crisis has forced you to rethink how you connect to others and how you define personal success. You could allow yourselves to be mired in the crisis that is reported daily by the numbers, but you could also choose to be the agents of possibility.

The economist Milton Friedman wrote, “Only a crisis - actual or perceived - produces real change. When the crisis occurs, the actions that are taken depend on the ideas that are lying around.” Your class has aggressively grappled with ideas that challenge our political and social norms. Whether you are a Tiger or a Royal, think of the work you have done to address issues of equity, to address gun violence, to address the medical needs of ill children, and to address environmental sustainability. Your ideas have not simply been lying around, they have been tossed, kicked, clutched, and crunched capturing and driving your imaginations and your actions.

Technology assisted connections have forced us into new norms of human interaction, and your class, if not your generation, may be the first to witness the harnessing of digital technology to bring us closer to one another. The Class of 2020 may, indeed, drive that development. Moreover, you may very well be driving force to pause or halt global warming, political divides, and economic divisions.

As the Superintendent of Schools, I regret that we have not been able to conduct the traditional ceremonies at Fishers and Hamilton Southeastern High Schools to celebrate your accomplishments. However, we are putting the finishing touches on some novel ways to say how proud we are of you, and we are planning commencement ceremonies that will long be noted as extraordinary for what must have been an extraordinary class.

Have you, the Class of 2020, been an extraordinary class? It is what you do with your diplomas that will demonstrate your exceptionalism… or not. My bet is on you. I have seen you in action, and if a crisis is the breeding ground for change, you are the agents of possibility.

On behalf of our Board of School Trustees, the teachers, and the administration, I want you to know how proud we are that you are walking into the future with a diploma from the Hamilton Southeastern Schools. We will watch with pride as you, the Class of 2020, craft the possible.

The early hours of that day, Koopman and his trusted K-9 Harlej were on the trail of a suspected drunk driver before Harlej was shot and killed in the line of duty during the pursuit.

Since 2003, the Fishers Farmers Market has provided area residents with locally produced vegetables, meats, baked goods, honey and jams plus specialty items. This year, in response to COVID-19, steps were taken to ensure that customers are still able to purchase all the market has to offer, yet in a safe way. An online ordering system

has been set in place for delivery as well as social distancing compliant procedures for attending the market in person. “The safety of our customers and vendors is a top priority, and at this time we are taking the steps needed to operate our seasonal market in the safest way. We have taken note from other local and national markets that are following a similar plan,� explains Sarah Sandquist, Director of Parks and Recreation.

After a virtual start to the season that included ordering online and pickup for market goers, the market returned to the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater for an in-person shopping experience starting May 23. Set in place are guidelines that include mandatory physical distancing and masks are encouraged for vendors and customers.

Vendor booths will be safely spaced around the amphitheater and visitor capacity will be limited.

Pre-ordering and delivery options are still available as they were at the beginning of the season when the market was all virtual. Participants can register and create an account on the Fishers Farmers Market website by entering their contact and billing information. Then, products available can be viewed and selected to be placed in their online cart. Online ordering begins on Sundays at 9 a.m. and closes Wednesday at noon for delivery on the following Saturday.

“We have received an overwhelmingly positive response from vendors and customers. Online ordering opened on Sunday, April 26 and we closed ahead of the Wednesday, noon cutoff because we sold out orders,” Sandquist says.

“The Fishers Farmers’ Market showcases vendors from Central Indiana that offer fresh produce, baked goods, honey, meats, cheeses, coffee, plants and more. Juried to the strictest standards, the market offers fresh, local foods direct from farmers and producers.”

This year’s market features both returning favorites and exciting new vendors. Popular bakers, such as The Bearded Baker and Gluten Free Options, are joined by Le Petit Gateau, a company that produces a JUNE 2020

variety of delectable scones. Coffee roasters Rose & Lois are selling Dark Side whole bean coffee and Julian Cold Brew. Their debut fits in perfectly with market veterans Indy Coffee Roasters and Java House Cold Brews. New purveyor Lindy’s Cookies is selling DIY Cookie Decorating Kits that are a perfect family activity.

Besides the expected organic meats, jams and other foodstuffs are products for pets and gardens. Gourmet dog treats are available from three different vendors. Many varieties of starter plants for families who will be gardening this year are being sold by VanAntwerps Farm Market.

ad’s can be some of the hardest people to surprise and purchase for. But it’s that time of year again to start tackling this job and planning ways to celebrate those dads in our lives. Father’s Day is just around the corner and here are a few ways you can make your dad feel pretty special.

1. DAD LIBS This is a fun one! There are plenty of printables online but you can easily make up your own. Write out a story, leave certain words blank, and then have your kids fill in the blanks to make for some really hilarious entertainment that you can read over and over. If it’s a really good one, add a favorite photo of him and the kids and have it all framed it for his desk!

2. PIZZERIA FUN Who doesn’t love pizza? Grab all the ingredients needed to make pizza and have a pizzeria of your own! You’ll need dough, sauce, toppings, and maybe even give him a pizza oven for a real surprise! The kids can make menus and signs for the “restaurant.”

Throw on some aprons and play Italian music for full effect. This one is great because the entire family can be a part of it and it makes for a great night in the kitchen.

3. FAMILY ADVENTURES Dad is sure to enjoy any time adventuring with the family. If your family is more active and up for a long day, pick a state park to explore on a hike and try a trail you’ve never done before. If you are ready for a family bike ride, haul the bikes to a fun paved trail where you can stop for ice cream in the middle. Taking a boat out on the lake for the day would also be a fun way to celebrate dad and you can even pack everything you’d need for fishing if you think he’d be up for it.

4. BACKYARD BBQ If you are up for the grilling task, grab some ribs and chicken wings and head out back to fire up the grill and swap places with the dad in your life on this special JUNE 2020

day. Or, if you are more like me, order in your favorite BBQ and heat it up when everyone’s ready to eat! Either way, it’s the thought that counts. Even better, make it into a picnic and grab some buns, some beer, or some bottled cokes and head to your favorite park. Let the kids pack the basket and plan the sides and games. They can even wrap the silverware in napkins for an added touch.

5. ALONE TIME Because it’s Father’s Day, let him choose how he’d like to spend some time alone. He might want to watch a game, play some golf, take a nap or work in the garden, but whatever he chooses, he’s sure to appreciate a few hours by himself. He’s sure to still want to hang out with the family at the end of the day, but letting him enjoy some kid-free time is something he’s sure to love!

Back in 2017 when Omar Barham began formulating the idea that would result in Havana Cigar Lounge, located at Fishers District, he immediately knew what type of aesthetic would permeate the establishment - one of luxury and quality.

“I own the Coast to Coast Imports car dealerships, and we do high-end, luxury products,” Barham says. “I also have the

years it’s really going to take off even more,” Barham says. “After talking to some leaders here in Fishers, I knew it was the perfect spot and that this whole location is great for us.”

After starting the initial brainstorming sessions that would result in Havana Cigar Lounge, Barham realized Fishers District was the perfect setting to install his high-end concept.

Barham says in addition to expanding the luxury brand he’s developed in recent years, the simple demand for a unique cigar lounge concept on the Northside was also a driver behind his decision to open the establishment.

“The area here is already great, and in a few JUNE 2020

“The leaders here want to bring more restaurants to the area, and there are many of them opening but not like we have,” he says. “I’ve always been a cigar guy, and I own a tobacco manufacturing factory in the Middle East. I wouldn’t want to have done something that doesn’t involve tobacco.”

After a year-long design process, construction on Havana Cigar Lounge began in September of last year, and the result is a premium cigar lounge, a full bar and a full food menu, all in an intimate, refined setting.

“I don’t think there is another full-service cigar lounge like this in Indiana,” General Manager Julio Galvan says. “If you want to come in with your laptop and smoke a cigar, you can. And then we have a dedicated chef, Ricky Martinez, who can come out and talk to the guests. He’s well-versed in a lot of different cuisines.”

“Our number-one product is service,” says Rob Coombes, director of operations.

“From there, we offer exceptional cigars, and a full bar selection from beer to rare cognacs and bourbons. Beyond that, what I think is going to set us apart in Indiana, if not the nation, is going to be our kitchen.

The menu ranges from a Cuban sandwich with Martinez’s own twist, to duck confit and Spanish octopus. Lunch options include beef skewers, ropa vieja, hummus and guacamole and dinner items include marinated skirt steak, herb-crusted lamb chops and bone-in short rib. Patrons can choose from sides like yucca fries, fried plantains, Cuban beans and more.

“We want to be sure we recognize what’s around us and support other local businesses,” Galvan says. “I also want to be known for rums, and we have a lot of special releases and up to 30-year-old rums. A lot of places are heavy into the bourbons, the ryes and the scotches, and we want to find a niche with rums.”

Coombes says the staff will offer both cigar and drink pairing suggestions for the food menu.

“Different types of cigars do different things, and types of tobacco can be rolled in a cigar that pair with food and stimulate appetite,” he says.

Galvan adds that the local response to his new establishment has been largely positive.

“People were peeking around at the place for a long time back when we started building, interested in what was going on and asking us about it,” he says. “When the

signs came up, local people really got excited about having a place like this close to where they live. There’s nothing of this caliber around us — you’d have to go downtown, at least 10 or 12 miles away. There’s a lot of excitement, and we share it.”

Wednesday, November 13, 2019, is a day that will stay with Fishers Police Officer Jarred Koopman for the rest of his life. The early hours of that day, Koopman and his trusted K-9 Harlej were on the trail of a suspected drunk driver before Harlej was shot and killed in the line of duty during the pursuit.

Since then, the Fishers community has mourned the loss of K-9 Harlej with a memorial ceremony. Over the last five months, Koopman and his family have mourned, too. Officer Koopman’s wife and kids mourned the loss of a dog that was, by all means, a part of their family.

For officer Koopman, the loss of K-9 Harlej hit even deeper, shattering the normalcy of his day-to-day without a partner that had been by his side for nearly five years.

“Going back to work was hard,”

Koopman says. “I just felt lost for a while. I started remembering little things that, before all of this, you just forget like when I go fill up my car at the gas station, I would always let Harlej out and people could see him. It just felt weird.

I still think about him every single day. I trusted my life with this dog. You spend more time with them on the job each day almost than you do with your family.

Every time I showed up to a call before another officer could get there, I had Harlej in the car beside me as my backup, my partner. It is a strong bond. As a K-9 JUNE 2020

handler, we understand the job and what could happen. I certainly appreciate it even more now.”

Today, Koopman has a new K-9 partner — Rico. The pair officially started on duty the first week of April.

For Koopman, the new partnership is bittersweet. He is happy to have another K-9 partner, and being a handler is his life’s passion in law enforcement. Still, he wasn’t sure when he would be ready again for another K-9.

“I didn’t know what to expect getting back into it,” he says. “I never once thought about walking away from the K-9 unit, but I’m really glad that I took some time away from it. Through that downtime of not having a dog, I realized even more how much passion I have for working with K-9s.”

Unlike Harlej, where Koopman says the bond there wasn’t immediate and took

time to grow, the connection with Rico has been instant. Rico came through, along with three other K-9s, from overseas.

Officer Koopman, who now assists in training other would-be K-9 handlers, was tasked with training some of these new K-9s in a three-week course.

Rico stood out early on in the process.

After the course ended, Koopman chose Rico as his next partner.

“Our connection has been really good,” Koopman says. “It took about eight months before Harlej really trusted me when we first got on duty. Rico’s bond has been much quicker. It is exciting but it takes time. Harlej and I were in our prime when he was killed. We trusted each other completely. Rico and I are still figuring each other out.”

Today, the pair are out in Fishers on regular shifts and answering any calls when needed.

Finding some of that normalcy again is a welcoming feeling for Koopman.

Koopman’s normal, though, is a brand new world for Rico, who came from Belgium.

In between calls and shifts, Koopman takes the time to let Rico out, get a feel for his surroundings and his new home in Fishers and continue his training.

As for Harlej, he will always be a part of officer Koopman. The sacrifice Harlej made certainly isn’t one to be taken lightly, he says.

“Some people might not understand it or what the big deal was with (losing Harlej),” Koopman says. “Harlej took a bullet for me and other officers that day. We go out into the unknown and these K-9s lead the way. We trust them with our lives. As handlers, we share so much with them. At home, they get to be a dog and a part of your family. You don’t forget that.”

Koopman’s wife and kids still miss Harlej every day, but they are happy to welcome Rico to the family.

“I used to take Harlej on a walk every morning and my boys would come with me,” Koopman says. “They have wanted to do that with Rico too, so we have continued that tradition with him. They love Rico. My wife and the boys are really excited. With Harlej, we took it for granted a bit. As a family, obviously, you don’t ever think something bad is going to happen. I can already tell that Rico is appreciated and loved.”

The City of Fishers, through the Build Fishers Foundation, awarded $505,000 in low-interest loans to Fishers small businesses on Friday, May 8.

“Fishers’ small businesses are the lifeblood of our community,” says Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness. “As our city begins to safely re-open, my hope is that these loans will help our small businesses with the muchneeded upfront cash required to resume partial operations and eventual re-opening”

CITY OF FISHERS AWARDS $505,000 IN LOANS TO FISHERS BUSINESSES FOR START-UP OPERATIONS

The loan committee took into consideration the following as part of the decision-making process. All businesses must employ 25 full-time employees or less and one of the following: • Designated as non-essential under Governor Holcomb’s stay-at-home Executive Order • Unable to adopt a business model to sustain existing revenue during the COVID-19 Pandemic • Essential businesses that had to furlough or lay off 50% or more of their workforce as a result of COVID-19 • Must be able to demonstrate a direct correlation of their business disruption due to COVID-19 The committee presented the approved loan recipients during the Build Fishers Foundation meeting for final approval.

Seventy-three loans were approved.

Businesses will receive up to a six-month no-interest deferment upon receiving funds. After the deferral time, businesses will have the opportunity to repay the loan at a 1% interest rate for 36 months.

The Start-Up and Recovery Loan is just one component of Mayor Fadness’ Recovery Plan, unveiled April 23. In conjunction with the loan program, businesses in Fishers have access to COVID-19 testing through the Fishers Health Department’s program, reopening assistance for COVID-19-safety protocols through the Business Recovery Team, and one-on-one consultation for business assistance via the Business Recovery Center.

hen Tom Rich attended the Fishers City Service Awards on March 4, he knew he was in the presence of greatness.

City leaders were distributing awards in various categories including public works, fire department, police department, and parks and recreation. When Rich’s name was called as the Nonprofit Volunteer of the Year recipient, he was surprised.

“There are so many good people in this community,” Rich says. “To win was really nice.”

In fact, it was the local community that drew him to volunteering in the first place.

Prior to retirement, Rich, 76, owned a small manufacturing firm in downtown Indy. However, Rich’s career spanned multiple positions. He’s been a teacher, public school administrator, college professor and newspaper distributor.

“I’ve been so fortunate in my life that everywhere I’ve gone, I’ve liked working with people,” says Rich, who knew he’d want to give back to the community during his golden years. “I just feel the community gives everything to us and they deserve to get something back from us.”

When he learned that leaders from the Fishers Arts Council, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that advocates for the arts in Fishers, were looking for people to join their board, he decided to give it a try.

“I don’t have an artistic bone in my body, but I can organize,” Rich says. “They said, ‘Why don’t you display art in City Hall?’”

Every month Rich and the other seven council members hang artwork in City Hall, and each piece is tied to a certain theme.

For instance, the volunteers recently paid homage to artists with disabilities.

“We called it a Celebration of Inclusion, and all of the arts, including Connor Prairie, City Hall, and 18 different businesses, showcased artists with disabilities such as blindness, hearing loss and developmental challenges,” says Rich, who now serves as president of the Fishers Arts Council.

All of the art was for sale, as the goal was to promote each artist as an entrepreneur.

The council plans to hang artwork from seniors at Fishers High School and Hamilton Southeastern High School.

“These artists teach how to do a card or bows or alcohol ink, so when you leave, you can take something home with you,” Rich says.

“We reach out to businesses to ask them to underwrite scholarship funds,” says Rich, noting that the council secured $2,000 in college scholarship money from Star Bank for local seniors.

Last year Fishers Arts Council members displayed 758 pieces of art in City Hall by 223 different artists - including 61 artists with disabilities and 51 high school seniors.

The Arts Council leaders also invite senior citizen to contribute artwork. In fact, there is an 88-year-old artist contributor who lives at the Reserve at Hamilton Trace.

In partnership with the Fishers parks and recreation department, the Fishers Arts Council also organizes the Fishers Arts Crawl, linking businesses with artists in order to draw people to local downtown businesses. To find local artists, council members typically organize a call-out, working with Nickel Plate Arts leaders.

The council members also reach out to colleagues at the Indiana Arts Commission, and pay artists to work with students and 38 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / JUNE 2020 / atFishers.com

Rich and his wife of 20 years, Connie, have three daughters and two grandchildren. He has discovered that volunteering can be the best medicine for loneliness and despair.

“If you’re feeling sorry for yourself, go help somebody,” Rich says. “I’ve had two stem cell transplants and prostate cancer.

Rather than sit around moping about it, I’ve decided to get busy helping my community.”

For anyone who is interested in volunteering but perhaps a little nervous to dive in to the process, Rich suggests starting out small, giving an hour or two per month.

“Get into it gradually, but be prepared to make friends for life,” Rich says. “The people who volunteer are some of the most wonderful people in the world.”

Paver Rescue President Tony Lausas wants to make your patio look as good as new.

Pavers make your home look great, but as is true of many home projects, they often need to be inspected, cleaned and maintained. It is not uncommon for pavers to shift and move over time. The system is meant to move with freeze and thaw cycles.

As a result, some pavers will move more than others creating inconsistencies and low or high areas.

“We’ve seen some pretty ugly situations, where patios haven’t been maintained.

But we can bring most pavers back to life,” Lausas says. “We can take something that you’d never think could be saved and bring it right back to life. It’s very rewarding to take someone’s initial investment and bring it right back to its original value.”

After founding parent company BPI Outdoor Living in 1998, Tony Lausas decided in 2012 that another company was needed whose sole focus was paver projects.

Repairs aren’t especially difficult, but homeowners need to be aware that they can be time-consuming and certain tools to complete the repairs correctly are needed.

That is why Paver Rescue introduced their ongoing maintenance program called “Pete’s Service Program.” The program allows for a yearly site visit to ensure that the client’s investment is always protected and that their pavers are always in tip-top shape.

“The multi-step process to maintain a paver patio, driveway or walkway isn’t overly complicated but you need to have the correct equipment, the attention to detail and know what possible issues to look for,” he says.

That’s why Paver Rescue invests in top-of-the-line commercial hot water pressure washers and scrubbers, and their staff is trained and certified to use the types of cleaners, sands and sealers that they apply.

“We come in with heated pressure washers and surface cleaners,” Lausas says. “We’re using equipment that’s commercial grade. It’s better than a hardware store pressure washer that a homeowner might buy or even rent.

Without the proper equipment, you can do more damage than they do good.”

Next, the Paver Rescue team focuses on paver repairs.

“The benefit of pavers opposed to concrete is that concrete cracks, but pavers can be fixed most of the time,” Lausas says. “So we built a dedicated repair team that can come in and assess and accomplish any necessary repairs.”

Lastly, the Paver Rescue team administers sanding and sealing protection to ensure the paver stays in good shape.

“You want to make sure you use the correct types of sand for the specific paver you will be sealing,” Lausas says.

“The sealer actually does two things — it protects the surface and stabilizes the joint. Once the sealer sets up in the joints and hardens the sand and protects the pavers, you no longer need to worry about sand erosion or unwanted weeds and debris.”

Stephen Fuller, with 5280 Bistro has been making sure Hamilton County residents enjoy great meals delivered straight to their neighborhoods, with the restaurant’s popular food truck.

The 5280 Bistro Food Truck has made several meal options easy for many parents and single people not in the mood to cook another meal at home or go out for dinner, especially when many restaurants are still operating at 50% capacity.

When the coronavirus pandemic forced many restaurants to close or offer curbside pick-up only, the folks at 5280 Bistro got creative with how they could get their food to loyal customers. The food truck has stopped by neighborhoods every week throughout the coronavirus pandemic to offer a safe, and easy, food option for patrons.

Customers can also come out of their homes to order food as well, if they did not order ahead. The truck has a lot of different menu items, and several health precautions are made to keep everything safe.

“We have mainly just followed the guidelines that the health department has in place now,” Fuller adds. “Things are definitely different during these times. What is unique is that we are all young college students and having this chance to manage a business has been a great experience. We are all friends, and we have fun when we are working, and I think when people come to our truck they are enjoying it as well. It is a little bit of normal for us all.”

Fuller has also enjoyed making the food and seeing customers.

“We have gotten positive responses from different neighborhoods,” he says. “People have enjoyed our food and have asked us to come to their neighborhood again.”

The 5280 Food Truck goes to many neighborhoods in the Hamilton County area including the Woodberry, Wood Hollow, and Brooks Chase neighborhoods.

The truck has been all around Fishers, Carmel, Noblesville and Indianapolis-area neighborhoods.

Fuller, who is also the concessions supervisor at Conner Prairie, noted that he has made the most out his positive experience with the food truck.

“This opportunity was given to us from 5280 Bistro Owner Joe Hsu,” Fuller says.

“He was hired as an executive chef at The Hotel Carmichael in Carmel and asked if we would like to use the truck, to allow us college kids to make some money during this crazy time.” atFishers.com / JUNE 2020 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / 45

Fuller adds that Hamilton County residents have been very supportive throughout the stay-at-home order.

“People have really wanted us to come out to their neighborhoods because they know the truck due to us being at the farmers markets and Ruoff Music Center,” Fuller says. “The number one customer favorite is our Tachos.”

Fuller and his food truck co-workers have been impressed with how people have been kind during the pandemic.

“Fishers and Hamilton County is where we grew up, and it is our home,” Fuller says. “The people here have been very supportive.”
