Lions & Tigers & Bees, Oh My! When planting the “sunflower fort” at my church, one of the first concerns of the preschool director was that the sunflowers would attract bees. Yes, we want to grow the sunflowers for the birds and butterflies. But bees? Yikes!

warmed up, the worker bees were off to find a new home, preferably in a hollow tree. Unfortunately, it may be the garage!

So we’ll have to find out if their new home is in the walls or attic of the old garage – but that’s another story.

Growing up on the farm I saw all kinds of bees and knew that bumblebees (native bees) were okay but to stay clear of yellow jackets! We all deal with sweat bees at picnics; and this year, we had carpenter bees “drilling” holes in our house. Lacecutter bees pollinate a variety of crops, trees, and sunflowers.

There are so many kinds of bees, but we hear most often about honey bees due to their decline and the mysterious disease Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD). To help the honey bee, it is good to plant flowers like sunflowers because they provide nectar for the bees in mid summer when not as many plants are blooming. Hopefully, the bees will be done with the “sunflower fort” by the time preschool starts again in the fall so they will not be a problem for the children.

Just last week down at my Dad’s farm in Rush County, we found a bee swarm in a small tree and it looked like a dark brown My great nephews, Max and Eli, and I took some praying mantis bag. Friends Forever

By Barbara Augsdorfer The death of a child at any age is every parent’s worst nightmare.

And even though the pain of the loss never goes away, sometimes something good can come even from the worst of circumstances. Such is the case with the Friends Forever Golf Tournament, held the first Saturday in August at Hickory Stick Golf Club in Greenwood.

On May 22, 2004, Nic Habicht, Joseph Alexander, Jacob Surface, and Paul Dayment, all Center Grove High School graduates and students at IU in Bloomington were living in an off-campus house looking forward to attending classes during the summer

quarter. Habicht had just completed his sophomore year and decided to change his major. The other boys had just completed their junior years.

However, that night the boys woke up to the smell of smoke.

The house was an older two-story house and had only one exit in the front. (The back door had been removed by the owner and the house remodeled to make another bedroom.) There was a smoke detector, but no carbon monoxide detector. Habicht called 9-1-1, but by the time the fire department arrived, it was too late.

Dayment was the only one to survive. It was later determined that an electrical fire started in the living room.

They were friends in life, and now they are friends forever.

Thus, the Friends Forever Memorial Golf Classic was launched in August 2004. All funds raised from the event stay within the Center Grove Community. Each year, three $1,000 scholarships are given to Center Grove High School graduates attending IU Bloomington; funds are also donated to the White River, Bargersville, Greenwood and Bloomington fire departments for education, training and equipment. The event also supports the White River Fire Department’s toy and clothing drive at Christmas and local food banks. Finally, the Friends Forever Golf Outing purchases and gives carbon monoxide detectors to students heading off to college for their room, apartment, or house. In the previous seven years of the event, more than $100,000 has been raised and distributed to local charities.

Scholarships totaling $19,000 have been awarded to Center Grove High School graduates attending IU; $43,000 has been given to local and Bloomington fire departments; $3,000 to the Christmas Angels program through the White River Township Fire Department; $5,500 to purchase carbon monoxide detectors; $1,500 for local food pantries, and $5,000 given to Arms of Life Left: Mary Lou Habicht and Dianna Alexander (mothers of Nic Habicht and Joseph Alexander) ready to greet golfers at the 2011 event.

“The Golf Classic is a way to remember the boys each year,” says Mary Lou Habicht, Nic’s mother. “It’s like a big family reunion. Every year more people come. We even had one young man plan his wedding for the week after the golf outing, so he could participate and then get married the following Saturday.”

who died tragically in a house fire. “It’s draining but rewarding all at the same time,” says Mrs. Habicht. This year’s event is the eighth annual and due to the popularity, there are two start times. “We’ve had more than 200 golfers participate. It’s an all-day event.” Mrs. Habicht adds.

A

ny list of the best golf courses in America always includes courses like Harbour Town in South Carolina and the TPC Sawgrass in Florida. Closer to home, Indiana’s best features the likes of Brickyard Crossing at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, The Fort in Lawrence and Carmel’s Crooked Stick Golf Club, site of this year’s BMW Championship on the PGA Tour. What all of these world-class golf courses have in common is their designer, World Golf Hall of Fame course architect Pete Dye. Long before he built any of those other courses, Dye got his start right here in Center Grove more than 50 years ago, designing what is now the back nine at Dye’s Walk Country Club.

The Center Grove area not only holds a special place in the history of golf course architecture, it now offers a variety of playing options. From casual par-3 courses for the beginner to quality tracks suitable for hosting qualifying tournaments for national championships, there’s something for every level of golfer in Center Grove.

Dye’s Walk Country Club In 1959, the area on the southwest corner of Olive Branch Road and State Road 135 was farm land. But real estate developers Henry and Bill Nordsieck wanted to turn it into a planned community with a golf course. The Nordsiecks could handle the neighborhood. But for the golf course, they turned to Pete and Alice Dye. At the time, Pete was a former insurance salesman working at the Country Club of Indianapolis and Alice was an Indiana amateur golf champion. El Dorado Country Club (as it was originally called) would be their very first golf course design.

“It was a partnership from the very beginning,” Alice explains about her 8

and Pete’s design process and division of labor. “We laid out the holes and we talked about it together. We had a dining room table, and we’d cut strips of paper and laid them out on the map and talked about the best arrangement.”

The Dyes created plans for 18 holes but only completed nine – what are today holes 10 through 18. The #10 tee was right next to a small cemetery. Asked today if starting a golf course right next to a burial ground gave him pause, Pete Dye responds, “I’ve built more golf courses around cemeteries – I think they haunt me.”

Much has changed since the private club opened in 1960. A second nine was added

in the early 1970’s by Indianapolis golf course architect Ron Kern (the Dyes were living in Florida by then and weren’t asked to complete their original design).

The name was changed from El Dorado to Royal Oak in 1987, then to Dye’s Walk in 2007. The private club filed for bankruptcy in 2011, but has emerged as a member-owned club and is seeing a resurgence.

Mike Abdalla, a member of the Dye’s Walk Board of Directors, talked about how the club made the transition from for-profit private ownership to a memberowned not-for-profit structure.

Bluff Creek Golf Course The clubhouse sits on the highest spot in Johnson County, just west of the State Road 37 and Stones Crossing intersection at 2710 South Old State Road 37. That vantage point affords golfers at Bluff Creek some beautiful views. However, it also presents some challenging shots. For instance, the par-3 10th hole is only 111 yards. But the green is a 70-foot drop from the tee.

is extremely high compared to that of member owned,” says Abdalla. He goes on to explain that during the bankruptcy process “it was the intent of the bank to sell the club back to the members in about 3 years. What we (the members) did by coming in and offering to buy it sooner, we short-circuited the process and made it happen quicker.”

With around 250 members at last count (the club will cap membership at 350), Dye’s Walk offers several different membership levels: Family, Single, Corporate, Jr. Executive, Military, Widow, and Honorary. The club also boasts a very active female membership.

“The women have their own club within the club,” says Abdalla. “They have a president, vice president, and treasurer.

They organize their own tournaments as well as fundraisers and social events.”

In 2007, Pete Dye was invited back to suggest possible changes to the course.

The one that has the best chance of coming to fruition in the foreseeable future is a fairly radical redesign of #10.

The 10th tee has already been moved forward about 40 yards because of a dispute between the club and the owners of a small parcel of land near the entrance to the club where the tee was originally located. That dispute is currently in litigation. But no matter the outcome of that suit, the tee most likely will not return to its original spot. In fact, it may move even farther down the fairway.

From the beginning, the 10th hole has played as a dog-leg par-4, requiring a well-placed tee shot followed by a second shot over the pond fronting the green. No easy par, by any means.

Dye’s new idea for #10 is to move the tee box forward even more, to the point where the golfer can see the green from the tee and taking the dog-leg out completely. But this change to #10 would also allow for another improvement to the club that Abdalla says has been in the planning stages for a while. The front part of the 10th fairway, that area between the clubhouse and S.R. 135 that would no longer be needed for the 10th hole, would then be made into a new expanded practice area, featuring a putting green and chipping area. The current location of the practice green would be eliminated to lengthen the driving range.

One thing you won’t see from your perch above the fairways is a house.

Bluff Creek is the only Center Grovearea course not built near a residential neighborhood. So you can swing with confidence and know that your slice won’t end up in someone’s back yard.

The course was built in 1998, but the clubhouse wasn’t added for two more years. So those early golfers were basically on the honor system to pay for their round.

But Dye’s Walk isn’t just about golf. The club is available to the public for indoor or outdoor weddings and receptions, graduation parties, reunions, and private parties of any kind.

Finally, Abdalla succinctly explains the benefits of a Dye’s Walk Country Club membership: “It’s a year’s worth of entertainment for the cost of one family vacation.”

Hickory Stick Golf Club

Hickory Stick Golf Club “Looks like you’re in jail.”

Every golfer knows what that means: You’ve hit your shot so badly right or left that your ball has landed among the trees, the trunks acting like jail cell bars making escape difficult, if not impossible. Fortunately, that’s a phrase you’ll never hear at Hickory Stick Golf Club. That’s because there are no trees. Not very common for your typical American golf course, but indicative of an “Irish links” course, as described by Keith Clark, Head PGA Professional at Hickory Stick since 2004.

“It has contours throughout the fairways,” says Clark, “and greens that have the availability for run-up shots, which make the course very playable for all levels of players.”

But don’t let the lack of trees fool you. Hickory Stick can be challenging. Water hazards come into play on half the holes, and bunkers can be found on all but one.

Built in 2001, Hickory Stick, like Dye’s Walk, was part of a planned residential golf course community. And also like Dye’s Walk, it has Pete Dye’s design fingerprints on it – sort of. The layout was designed by golf course architect Tim Liddy. “Tim did this golf course,” Clark says, “after he had worked on Whistling Straits (Wisconsin) with Pete Dye and brought some of those ideas here.”

A par-3 course is the perfect place for a beginning golfer to learn the fundamentals of the game. It’s also a good place for an accomplished player to hone his or her short-game skills at a fraction of the cost of a regular round of 18. Center Grove is fortunate to have two par-3 courses.

Orchard Golf Center on State Road 135 across from Kroger has an 18-hole par-3 course, as well as a driving range, and “Bunker Run,” a complete pro shop with all types of equipment and lessons.

Orchard Golf also has a lighted miniature golf course.

Walnut Ridge, about a mile north of Center Grove High School on Morgantown Road, opened in 1974. It features 18 holes of wide-open fairways and mature trees. They have also recently remodeled the clubhouse focusing on area kids and teens. It features food, arcades, pool tables, and a live DJ on Friday and Saturday.

Perhaps it’s that design pedigree that has led Hickory Stick to host a number of high-profile events in its relatively short history, including a qualifier for the U.S. Senior Open.

What’s Your Number?

I’m sure we’ve all seen the commercials regarding the number (in dollars) that we need to save to achieve our financial dreams in retirement. In those commercials, the individual’s numbers range from $698,172 to $2,654,712. Another man just had a random thought as to what he needs…a gazillion.

A few weeks ago, I was in a bank that has a television in a sitting area where a news program was on. The program was covering the topic of US debt and the gross domestic product. The percentage was 70% of the GDP. Let’s think of that in personal terms. What if you carried the same percentage of debt as the national government? If we relate the percentage of US debt to the estimated median income of the Center Grove area, $79,660, 70% would equal $55,762. Under that load, it would be tough to get anything accomplished regarding debt reduction, saving up an emergency fund, saving for retirement, vacations, and college.

Cash flow planning is good for knowing where your money goes.

It can help make behavioral changes. But we can’t deny the debt load. Does it make sense to have minimum payments and car payments the rest of our lives? The government seems to think so, but personally, we should strive to be as financially savvy as we can be. I believe that comes from not carrying debt.

Our family’s personal debt number in late 2004 was over $65,000. It was comprised of credit cards, car loans, unsecured lines of credit, as well as a student loan. When we decided to become debt free, it was scary and a little intimidating to see the full amount of our debt number on paper. Honestly, it made us nauseous. What were we doing? What did we have to show for it?

In about 22 months, we paid off all that debt. Doing a monthly budget, limiting our spending, and using the debt snowball accomplished this. The debt snowball is a list of your debts from smallest to biggest. The goal is to budget minimum payments on all monthly debt payments with as much as you possibly can pay on the lowest overall balance. Before long, it will be paid off and you can move that payment to the minimum of the next lowest balance. As a result, the amount of money paid each month to the debt will increase. Just keep following this plan and the last obligation will be much more manageable. Don’t worry about interest rate. The goal is to have momentum as you knock out each debt.

It wasn’t easy, but now that we are almost 6 years removed from that final credit card payment life is better. I wouldn’t trade that experience or challenge; I only wish that we were debt free sooner. If only we knew then what we know now. Such is life.

Know your debt number, be proactive, and achieve a debt number of zero, not including your mortgage. That’s our debt number, so now we focus on those crazy numbers like in the commercial to fulfill our dreams for retirement, our boys, college funds, and anything else we desire. Beefcake Burgers Opening Soon

Center Grove entrepreneur Ric Payne, whose experience includes opening the McGilvery’s Pub & Eatery and Wild Beaver Saloon, has created a new casual restaurant concept that opens in early July. Beefcake Burgers, All-American Burger Shack is located at Olive Branch Road and SR 135. The term “beefcake” originally referred to stacks of beef. The Beefcake Original comes with three layers, or a stack, of beef. Don’t worry if you can’t handle it, they also offer smaller burgers, salads and chicken sandwiches.

The beefcake theme is carried throughout the restaurant with giant paintings of a steer and a bull on the wall. Payne says it all fits together with the image of beefcake, a big guy, big steers, and big burgers. He wanted to have fun with the décor so when you walk in you are greeted by carved version of their mascot “Beefcake”. The mascot, carved with a chainsaw, is made from a single log. The
