Center Grove Choirs October 6 Fundraiser Helps Provide Student Scholarships Writer / Megan Stephens Photography provided

Get ready to applaud. The Center Grove Choirs (CGC) is enriching the performing arts community on the southside of Indianapolis through its numerous shows throughout the year.

The choir provides the community with the opportunity to see shows performed at a very high level.

On October 6, the Center Grove Choral Parents Organization is hosting a fundraiser, Encore, to raise funds for student choir scholarships. Those scholarships help students continue to succeed in the program by covering choir fees and provides a spectacular avenue for performing arts for the community.

There are three types of scholarships — need-based, vocal lessons, and scholarships for students pursuing music as a career.

“We want to reach beyond our circle of normal contributors,” says Jennifer Dice, CGHS Choir Director. “We know the community enjoys our program and our shows, and so we’d like to pull them into this event specifically.”

Encore will take place at the Barn at Bay Horse Inn on October 6 from 5 p.m. - 9 p.m. The evening—tailored to the over-21 crowd—will consist of silent and live auctions, a catered dinner, and selected entertainment. The raffles are at all different levels and price points. Guests can expect to bid on trips to different areas of the country, baskets, and a wine pool. The yearly favorite is auctioning off a performance by the Center Grove Singers Varsity Group, where they will perform at your home or event.

In years past, $10,000 has been awarded for financial assistance, which covers about 200 students. There are many different options to sponsor at the Encore event. Guests can attend for $40 a person or buy a table of eight for $300.

“It’s a great partnership between us and the community to raise funds for the students,” Dice says.

Not only does the community provide support for the choir students, but the students give back to the community as well through their professionalism and enthusiasm for the performing arts.

Each student in the program diversifies the group of eclectic performers. Students range from athletes to student leaders, to those in robotics. Being focused and driven when it comes to the choir, they want to be the best they can be. Within the program, there are many student opportunities for growth and leadership. They are encouraged to grow, work hard, and do things they haven’t done before.

“The unique thing about the Center Grove Choir program is the focus on leadership and growth. It pushes yourself to be the best you can be, and maybe more than you thought you could be,” Erin Booher says, president of the CGC Parent Organization.

The Encore fundraiser is an opportunity for the community to support the local performance venue on the southside and the students to continue to enhance and refine their skills in leadership, musicianship, and performance.

“It’s not only about the money, but it’s about the enthusiasm and partnership with the community,” Booher says. “We are looking forward to a full house.”

For more than 40 years, Pool City has been serving the southside community’s in-ground and above-ground pool needs as a local, community-minded retail and service business that puts the customer first.

Owners Chris and Lynn Newett certainly epitomize the notion of a family-run business. Chris’s father Thomas founded Pool City back in 1973, specializing

in above-ground pools and eventually opened a Greenwood store on Fry Road in 1975. That same year, the couple got married and took a honeymoon to Denver where they grew fond of the mountains and decided to stay. Chris went to work for a pool installer, and five years later when they decided to relocate back to the Hoosier state, he went to work as a subcontractor for Thomas at Pool City installing in-ground pools.

Thomas continued to run the business until 2001, and upon retiring, he inquired

as to whether Chris wanted to continue his professional legacy. Chris assented, keeping his subcontractor business, Preferred Contractors Inc., in the process of assuming ownership of the company his dad had built. Lynn came on board five years later as business manager for Pool City, and since then the Newetts have worked diligently to remain a fixture of the local community when it comes to pool installation, service and retail equipment needs.

And there isn’t much the Newetts and

their staff can’t handle when it comes to above-ground and in-ground pools.

Pool City does service and maintenance calls, new installs with a specialization in fiberglass and vinyl-liner pools, as well as computer-based water analysis to help determine which chemicals might be needed to help bring a customer’s water balance to preferred levels.

“Over the years we have had the opportunity to install hundreds of inground pools,” Chris says, adding that in January, after 43 years on Fry Road, the Newetts moved their retail store to Madison Avenue in Greenwood where they offer a full-time parts and service department, as well as a retail store with a full range of chemicals, pool equipment, replacement liners and accessories.

When it comes to new installs, the Pool City staff typically sits down with a new customer to finalize all design specifics including decking and any add-on options, and then proceeds with grading, plumbing and electrical installations and wall construction.

The Newetts typically arrange a maintenance schedule for clients after their pool is complete to keep it in optimal long-term condition.

True to their company motto: “We keep you cool when it’s hot and warm when it’s cold.” The Newetts also have a fully stocked home and hearth shop with major brands such as Empire, Napoleon and Monessen. Pool City sells and installs vented and vent-free gas logs, fireplace doors, fireplace inserts, woodburning stoves, gas grills and more.

As a way to further educate and value their clients, the Pool City staff offers a special Pool School class on Saturdays throughout the month of May during which customers can ask questions about everything from above-ground and in-ground pool cleaning to equipment care to water chemistry and treatment. Vena Holden, owner of the resale boutique, has worked in the resale business for 22 years. Within that time, the business has expanded due to changing mindsets about what it means to shop resale and creating a positive impact on the community and the environment.

When Ale Emporium introduced their wings, pizza and brews to sports fanatics in Fishers last March, they opened their doors to a packed crowd that just had their dreams come true. After a year of success in the suburbs, Co-Owners Scott Baun, Tony Kwiatkowski and Herman Perryman have opened a third location in Greenwood this July. This time, the anticipation was even higher.

Located at County Line Road and Emerson Avenue, the former Fireside Brewhouse has transformed into a multiplex tavern with an astounding 82 TVs which create video walls that flank the pub on all sides. Although that number is a little shallow compared to the 137 TVs that the Castleton flagship location hosts, there is no doubt that wherever you turn, you’ll have your head in the game.

Ale Emporium has been an Indianapolis landmark since 1982 when Marc Luros established the Castleton location. Herman Perryman joined the team in the late ‘80s and so did daughter and son-in-law Shannon and Scott Baun in the ‘90s. Over the decades, sports fans who flood the bar have witnessed Bobby Knight’s chair toss in 1985, Indianapolis’ Super Bowl XLVI in 2012, and other iconic games.

“We liked the Greenwood area because it’s a really strong sports community,” Kwiatkowski says. “There are around six high schools within five miles, so bringing the family atmosphere to the Southside is the goal.”

If supporting the local high school sports, as well as the professional sports is the plan, then Ale Emporium is accomplishing it fantastically. Within the restaurant, the decor consists of jerseys from the local high school’s sports teams in the family section — like Greenwood, Whiteland, Center Grove, Perry Meridian, Franklin Central, Southport and Roncalli. No matter where you sit, you’ll feel surrounded by regional pride.

Construction started in December, and since then, massive changes to the original building have occurred.

“Everything is brand new,” Baun says. “The only two things that are original are one of the walk-in freezers and one of the range hoods.”

The aesthetic of the pub mimics the other two locations: rich and plentiful. Dark wood shiplap shimmies up to brick walls decked with neon signs. The ceiling is a combination of exposed beams and embossed tin tile. Adding to the richness, sliding windows facing toward the new extended patio, which seats 100, will fold back accordion-style so those who sit outside can experience the indoor energy.

The widely-known menu is keeping fans hooked. The famous Hermanaki Wings, created by Perryman himself, are still no less than top-notch —winning awards like Best Wings by Nuvo and The Indy A-List since 2013, and, not long ago, named the No. 1 Best Place for Wings in Indiana by BuzzFeed. Everything is homemade from the iconic Honest Pizza down to the blue cheese and ranch sauce. More than 100 domestic and imported beers are also available for the over-21 game-watchers.

“All the food is fresh. The only items we keep frozen are the ice cream and tenders” Baun says.

NLF Sundays are definitely the busiest, with tables maxed out while all eyes are watching the home team catch the winning score. But booze, wings and sports games are not the only thing you can expect at Ale Emporium. Local bands have been scheduled out for the year to play and entertain every night of the week including My Yellow Rickshaw, The Doo!, Stella Luna and the Satellites and The Why Store.

“Being a local brand, we like to bring in the local community,” Kwiatkowski says. “[Greenwood sports fans] love their Pacers, Colts and IU Basketball. What better side of town to bring together a community of sports fans than Greenwood.”

When walking inside the doors of The Nest, also known as the former Jonathan Byrd’s Cafeteria, the restaurant turned business center just off of the I-65 Greenwood exit amazes many people due to it’s complete remodel. The Nest Event Center takes up most of the building, but the goal of the space wasn’t just to create an area to hold weddings and parties. It’s also a hub where community and business are tied together.

Each business comes together to create a wholesome community. A common thread through all the business is that they all know each other — working to support each other in their unique ventures. The first-ever Greenwood Historic Home Tour will take place on September 14, and locals will have the chance to get a close look at some of Old Town Greenwood’s oldest and most unique residences.

“Old Town Greenwood is growing a lot, and there are so many great historic homes here,” says Craig DeBoor, co-organizer and board member with Restore Old Town Greenwood, Inc. (ROTG). “Franklin, Meridian Kessler and other places do great home tours, and we thought it would be neat to showcase the great historic homes in our community. We also hope that it brings more traffic into Old Town Greenwood in the hopes that it drives people to the small businesses here.”

As event organizers, DeBoor and his ROTG colleagues initially sent out a post on the group’s Facebook page requesting applications from anyone interested in featuring their home for the tour and followed up with site visits to each home to make their decisions on which homes to include.

“It was all by application only — we didn’t have to go door-to-

door and ask homeowners if they wanted to get involved,” DeBoor says. “Our goal was six to eight homes, and we’ve got some great, iconic properties that folks can see. The community really responded after we put out our Facebook post and got some good buzz going.”

And there will be plenty of history to experience. The oldest property included in the tour dates back almost 200 years. Its original home was constructed in 1823, and the current house was built 49 years later, just seven years after the Civil War. “That property was one of the first 150-acre sections given by the governor to settlers for development in 1823 and 1824 in Johnson County,” DeBoor says. “I don’t know of any properties around here that are older than that. The craftsmanship on these homes is something I think people will appreciate being able to see.”

Attendees can register and purchase tickets online and pick up wristbands on the morning of the one-day event along with a map and a brochure full of info on each historic home. Fifty volunteers will be spread amongst the homes to answer questions and

provide additional information throughout the day.

“It’s self-guided, so people can come and go as they please once they pick up their wristbands and spend as much time in each home as they like,” DeBoor explains. “The brochures will also feature information about small businesses here like the restaurants and bars and fun things to do here. We’re hoping this will generate interest from locals and from those coming from outside Greenwood.”

Founded in 2011, Restore Old Town Greenwood, Inc. is a volunteer-based organization dedicated to the historic preservation and revitalization of Old Town Greenwood and promotion of local businesses. The group partnered with the City of Greenwood to complete restorations on 22 building facades in Old Town Greenwood two years ago.

“We’re really trying to create a great community feel with this event and bring people here not only to see the great homes but discover the great restaurants, boutique stores and antique shops here too,” DeBoor says. “The mayor said everywhere he goes, he talks about Old Town Greenwood and the community that we have here. The pride of ownership is great here and being able to expose that is great. We want to show off that we have some great homes and that this is a great place to live, work and play.”
