PUBLISHER’S WELCOME July marks the halfway point for the year, and halfway through the summer for our kids who are in Center Grove schools. School starts on July 29, which is something I am glad I never had to experience.

In August, we will look at a number of things going on in our school system.

This month we are looking at a 2013 Center Grove graduate who launched her own business. After graduation, Paige Truelove took her passion for cupcakes and opened Truly Lovely Cupcakes, and a year later, she is still baking.

Another resident who turned a passion into a business is Cate Doane. You may have seen her “Cate’s Cottage” sign along Smith Valley Road. What she grows in her garden she sells out front. It is an interesting story about doing what you enjoy.

Cate isn’t the only resident selling what they grow. You’ll find pictures from the ribbon cutting of Moody’s Butcher Shop, which

sells meat raised in Indiana. Inside the shop, you will also find fresh produce grown in Center Grove. Indy Family Farms has started Indy Family Produce to grow produce and sell it locally. You’ll find it at their farm along State Road 37 and other local places.

If you have seen our cover, you know our cover story: horses and the people who ride them and care for them. I didn’t know you could lease a horse, which is just one of things I learned from the story.

I have learned about a lot of people and things in the two and a half years of publishing this magazine. If you have things you’d like to share, feel free to contact us. We are always looking for good stories about the people, places and events of the Center Grove community.

Not many high school seniors head from graduation to being a small business owner in a matter of months, but Paige Truelove recognized and seized the opportunity. A 2013 Center Grove High School alumna, Paige is the primary owner and baker of Truly Lovely Cupcakes at 399 S. State Road 135.

Inspired by her late grandmother’s old recipe collection, baking turned into a passion for Paige. As her confidence grew, Paige experimented with different ingredients to unveil a new cupcake recipe called the Snickerdoodle. One by one, family and friends claimed the cinnamon treat a success.

Entering her senior year, Paige was trying to figure out where her future should head, but she never imagined the journey she was

about to undertake. In the winter of 2013, she and her mother were traveling State Road 135 running errands when they saw a ‘for lease’ sign in a store window. “Mom suggested I should look into the specifics of the store as a possible place to sell cupcakes,” Paige said. “Several weeks later, I had the chance to tour the shop, and I immediately envisioned what each room would look like and how it would function.”

Paige believes that sometimes life puts us in certain places for a reason. After touring the shop, Paige realized her passion and talents needed to be used by owning a cupcakery. “It was hard work,” Paige recalled with a smile. “I remember every free minute in the evenings and on weekends was devoted to the shop, and somehow I managed to squeeze final exams and graduation into the mix. With the help of my family and friends, we transformed the shop into a quaint cupcakery.”

Walking into Truly Lovely Cupcakes, customers take in the tantalizing aroma of fresh-baked cupcakes, punctuated with a touch of cinnamon or chocolate in the air. Customers of all ages look through the glass display of the many cupcake varieties, and their mouths water for the taste of the moist, sweet treats. The shop offers daily, weekly and seasonal flavors, totaling 36 offerings in all.

Not surprisingly, the Snickerdoodle heads the list of daily cupcake flavors, which also include red velvet, vanilla bean, and confetti, to name a few. For chocolate lovers, triple chocolate, German chocolate or chocolate raspberry entice the taste buds. With the harvest of fresh fruits, the seasonal cupcake menu takes advantage of this abundance. For instance, October’s menu features caramel apple.

Tonja Talley has called Center Grove home since 1993. An 11-year bi-lateral lung transplant survivor, Tonja enjoys speaking on behalf of the Indiana Organ Procurement Organization. She also volunteers for the CF Foundation, byTavi, and her church.

While Truly Lovely Cupcakes’ atmosphere tempts a customer to stay a bit, their pre-ordering or catering service provides custom orders for special requests or events. According to the owner, the shop sells standard-size cupcakes, but the mini or jumbo size cupcakes are available through the pre-ordering or catering service. Other options within these two services include gluten-free cupcakes or specially decorated cupcakes to support a theme, idea or logo. “We can pretty much do anything with a cupcake,” says Paige. “The customer just needs to ask.”

Going on its first anniversary, Truly Lovely Cupcakes stands as a testimony to how a small business can thrive when passion and perseverance are present. “We have seen a huge increase in people wanting to learn traditional archery because of the recent Olympics and movie trends,” said Thomas Shinkle, archery representative for The Outdoorsman.

Center Grove High School senior Katie Huntzinger, 17, and her sophomore brother, Ethan Huntzinger, 15, have been archery competitors since long before the blockbuster movies The Hunger Games and Brave ever hit the big screen.

Both teenagers are avid archers, along with their father, Doug, uncle and aunt, who are pro-archers. The family affair with the sport started with Doug and his identical twin brother. Growing up in a small town, they tried their hand at archery as children. They found the sport fun and challenging, leading them both to use archery for hunting and competitions later on in life. Their passion for the sport led each of the brothers to pass it on to their own families.

Finally big enough to pull the bowstring, Katie and Ethan would play outside, imitating their dad and his beloved sport.

Making for great daddy time, Doug began introducing the children to the sport of archery. He set up targets for the children using big tic-tac-toe bags and balloons.

The games taught the novice archers to determine their distance and accurately shoot. “By the time we came of age to compete,” Katie said, grinning, “we were already familiar with the competitions and the whole archery concept.”

The only equipment an archer truly needs are a bow and an arrow. However, the bow, throughout history, has been the piece of equipment that must fit the individual archer. While several types of bows exist today, the Huntzinger family prefers to carry the compound bow. According to Ethan, many components on the bow help provide consistent and accurate shots. For instance, mounting stabilizers to the front of a compound will reduce movement on release of the string. Additionally, the compound, which resembles a traditional bow, carries pulleys, or cams, on each end

to allow for a steadier arm for aiming. Ethan explained the cams this way: “Pulling back on a bow takes about the same amount of force to hold it fully drawn as it does to draw it back. When you have to wait for your shot in that position for any length of time, the aiming arm quickly gets tired. The cams take the force off the archer’s arm, allowing for a steadier aim.”

Some think of archery competitions as a blend between bows, arrows and golf. This is likely because of the different course layouts, the varying challenges presented by each target, and the fact that archers shoot in groups as they navigate the course.

Archery competitions feature targets set at different distances over unusual or rough terrain, often in rural or wooded areas. Targets can be flat or three-dimensional. But, according to the siblings’ mother, Amy, the teens enjoy the 3-D format because of the realistic targets and the challenge of calculating the distances.

The targets themselves have a set of scoring circles, with the higher points centered over areas such as the heart or lungs. Archers shoot from colorcoded stakes in the ground for the distances appropriate for each division or class. For example, a 9-year-old girl would not be placed in the men’s age 19-25 red division. She would be placed in a division more suited to her capabilities, maybe the boys and girls age 9-11 yellow class.

Competitions have taken the family throughout the Midwest and eastern coastal states, including Pennsylvania, Michigan, Ohio, West Virginia and New York. Katie and Ethan have impressive records, both ranking ninth overall in Nationals, and Katie winning third in the 2010 World Championship.

SHERRIE’S RIDE RAISES $2,400

Over 75 riders gathered on a beautiful Saturday morning, June 14, to honor a beloved Center Grove teacher, Sherrie Buchanan. The Center Grove Education Foundation joined Sherrie’s Friends in co-hosting the Second Annual Sherrie’s Ride. The 10-mile fun bicycle ride or 5-mile walk/run funds the Sherrie Buchanan Memorial Teacher Grant.

Center Grove Middle School Central Special Education Teacher Kristin Rodman received the very first $1,000 Sherrie Buchanan Memorial Teacher Grant during the 2014 Gala for the Grove. Ms. Rodman’s students sent some thankyou notes to Mr. Buchanan: “I’m happy about getting new materials in our class. They will make us learn important things. I remember that Mrs. Buchanan helped me with my art projects. She was very nice.”

THIS IS MY FRIEND TERRY AND I AM HIS SENSEI

I

t was a Tuesday night after a long Memorial Day weekend and I was watching television, flipping back and forth between America’s Got Talent and a baseball game. Unfortunately, the Dodgers were beating the Reds, so I spent most of my evening watching the “talent show on steroids” premier episode. That’s when a 20-something kid came out and said, “My name is Dustin’s Dojo and I’m a trained black belt and I learned to be a black belt at Roger Baker’s Taekwondo and Pizza, Pensacola, Florida.”

He took a bow with his silent sidekick who was wearing a ski mask “This is my friend Terry and I am his sensei,” he added, followed by a roar of laughter from the audience.

Over the course of the next five minutes I witnessed the funniest karate parody I’ve ever seen. Dustin’s Dojo put on a demonstration featuring the breaking of flimsy wood slats, 60 seconds of full-extension punches, and a face full of salt thrown into his eyes by Terry “when he least expected it.” Comedy genius was rewarded with a golden buzzer save by judge Howard Stern, which allowed them to go to the next round in New York this July.

I rewound the skit, watched it with my wife several times, and posted a link of the clip on my Facebook wall the following morning, noting, “This was the hardest I’ve laughed in a long time.”

Then something magical happened. One of my Facebook friends left a comment that Terry Terry was his wife’s cousin from the Indy area. These guys are locals? I had to meet them.

So we headed west with a carload of people: our trusty videographer Mitch Jacki, and magazine designers and fans Alyssa Sander and Austin Vance. Our rendezvous spot was in Covington, Indiana at the famous Beef House Restaurant in their back parking lot.

From there, Dustin’s Dojo and Terry Terry took us to two of their training locations in Fountain County: The “snake pit” and the “road that leads down to the river.”

Dustin’s Dojo, donning his WWE Santino Marella t-shirt, treated us to an on-camera, in-character interview. He told us about his karate inspirations, being bullied in 3rd grade and roundhouse kicking his nemesis in the ear, the ever-presence of attackers and what they would do with the $1 million grand prize should they win America’s Got Talent. “We would build the Roger Baker Taekwondo and Pizza, Pensacola, Florida, Fountain County.”

was doing auditions in Indianapolis, they came up with these two characters and fleshed out the skit on the drive over to the Indiana State Fairgrounds.

“We were in character all day long,” said Britton. “The producers didn’t know what to think of us. At the end of the day, I broke down and laughed when he questioned my ‘world record’ for full extension punches thrown in 60 seconds.

The entire room erupted.”

Their act is like watching Napoleon Dynamite trying to understudy Bruce Lee. Dustin’s Dojo speaks loudly, as if you’ll believe him if he says it with pronounced authority. Terry Terry, whose name is a spoof on local horror movie host Sammy Terry, looks around aimlessly, trying to spot attackers. “Only locals would get the Sammy Terry reference,” Kent said with a laugh.

With their newfound fame, Britton has created a website at DustinsDojo.com where he posts exercise videos, karate demonstrations and merchandise including a “Roger Baker’s Taekwondo and Pizza, Pensacola, Florida” t-shirt.

As for America’s Got Talent, the two will be making their second-round appearance sometime in July. Be sure to watch on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. for their New York debut.

“Fresh Thyme Farmers Market is a new grocery format for the Midwest,” stated Chris Sherrell, President and CEO, Fresh Thyme Farmers Market. “We’ve taken the experience of an outdoor farmers market and combined it with the convenience of a full-service grocery store. In the center of the Center Grove community is Cate’s Cottage where you can buy local produce and flowers right in Cate Doane’s front yard. Cate has been in the flower business for several years, but last year was the first year for her front yard stand. Cate likes to use the phrase “HoosierGanics.” It was coined by Susan Welsand, “The Chile Woman” (TheChileWoman.com) from Bloomington, to describe her gardening. Cate uses organic methods to grow all her vegetables and flowers and she sells eggs from her pasture-raised chickens.

Cate is a Midwesterner having lived in Illinois, Iowa and Indiana, moving into her cottage in 2002, but it was on a kibbutz in Israel years ago that she got started with gardening. She thinks it is important for our children to know about raising our own food.

Cate loves to tell about letting her son, when he was a toddler, pick a raspberry and watching his face light up and his eyes grow big when he tasted that fresh juicy berry. Local, natural and fresh is best!

Over the spring, Cate shared her gardening methods in “Best Ever Garden” classes on topics including composting, tomato trellising and making perennial bouquets. Cate grows many kinds of perennial flowers for use in her cut flower bouquets that she sells at the Fisher’s Farmers Market. In the spring, she also sells perennial plants and vegetable transplants grown in her backyard gardens.

Each week over the summer and into the fall, Cate’s Cottage will have a wide variety of vegetables, herbs, berries and flowers, and you will be sure to find your favorites and discover new varieties to try. All are grown naturally, relying on bees and other pollinators like birds and butterflies and beneficial insects. Cate does not use pesticides or herbicides, and she uses natural fertilizers.

Joel Shipley helps Cate in her business, raising the chickens and doing various jobs like planting, mulching and burning off the weeds.

Cate has rented additional land to grow her tomatoes, many kinds of vegetables and more flowers. She is using the Florida Trellis method to grow her heirloom tomatoes. One variety is the Indigo Kumquat grape tomato that—besides its unique coloring—has the antioxidant anthocyanin, making it not only tasty but also very nutritious.

In the future, Cate wants to offer “pick your own bouquets” in her back yard and a winter CSA (Community Supported Agriculture), continuing with her stands in her front yard and at farmer’s markets.

When you stop at Cate’s Cottage, check out her red, white and blue garden to the left of the cottage and see her “Frosted Explosion” grass among the flowers. It will add July 4 fireworks to your flower bouquet!

Stuck in a dangerous situation with little to no money, a woman desperately looks to escape her abusive husband of 10 years.

She has no knowledge of the law or money, whereas he has enough funds to fully pay an attorney. What does she do?

Attorney Dannette Morgan donates her time, resources and energy to accept intake applications for help three times a month, handles cases on her own, and is the sole person responsible for assigning cases to volunteer attorneys.

She sees an advertisement in her local newspaper for something called a pro bono clinic where she can get free legal advice and apply for free legal help. Suddenly she sees the light at the end of the tunnel. She does not have to do this alone.

Intake applications are taken on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month at 10 a.m. at the Greenwood Public Library and the third Tuesday of the month at the Johnson County Courthouse. Legal advice clinics are periodically held, as well, through the Johnson County Legal Aid program.

Attorneys throughout Indiana regularly volunteer their time and resources to handle cases for free (pro bono). Johnson County runs a countywide legal aid program—which is a one-woman show.

The positive impact the program provides Greenwood residents in need cannot be matched. They are offered the services and advice they otherwise would not receive due to financial constraints.

“As a single working mother, I relied very heavily on our local district legal aid,” said one Greenwood resident who participated in a 2013 legal aid clinic. “It was extremely helpful in that not only did I receive the specific advice I needed, but I also was educated on how to find resources on my own in the future. I still apply much of what I learned then to my situations today, as well as pass on the benefits of legal aid to others in need.”

Throughout time, the caseload has grown tremendously as more residents need legal services due to hard economic times.

However, like many legal aid programs, Morgan runs into one huge roadblock.

It may take several months to locate an attorney, which often leaves individuals without help.

Despite the large number of attorneys in the area, only a handful accept legal aid cases. The reasons can be numerous, from limited staff time and financial resources to attorneys not handling the type of cases that come through. Many attorneys shy away from family law matters due to the nature of the cases, as well as the length of time these cases traditionally take.

The number of attorneys who take pro bono cases remains stagnant. Young attorneys are being asked to step up and take the lead in these programs to ensure all receive equal access to justice. Who will take over? Will these programs survive?

Only time will tell.

Alaina Sullivan is an attorney and freelance writer in Indiana. She focuses her legal work on providing free legal services to those who cannot afford an attorney and is passionate in writing about legal issues and news in the non-profit industry.

Because of the difficulties Morgan encounters in assigning cases, the type of cases handled are limited to general civil legal issues. This, however, does not include disability, criminal, custody or driver’s license issues. The most noticeable of this is child custody. Arguably, many domestic situations involve some child custody matter, whether it is simple or complicated. Where do these people go?

According to the Indiana Pro Bono Commission’s Annual Report for the district that covers Johnson County, in 2012 only 41 Johnson County attorneys handled 32 pro bono cases, donating a total of 622 hours. The average rate for attorney services in the area is approximately $200 per hour. At this rate, this means almost $125,000 in free legal services was given.

Of these 32 cases, Morgan handled 12 of them, donating over 242 hours of what would be considered billable hours. The remaining cases were assigned to other attorneys who took one to two cases at a time. However, the wait list of cases is lengthy, causing people who need immediate legal help to wait for months at a time to be assigned an attorney. Many do not receive one in time. Morgan is simply one person, and despite her best intentions, she cannot take on all of these cases on her own.

Kelly Lynn and her six-yearold daughter Ruby didn’t realize three years ago that Jacob, a thirty-inch miniature horse, would change their lives and cultivate a shared passion for participating in horse competitions. With her mother by her side, Ruby, now starting her first year in Johnson County’s Hoofprints 4-H Club (hphoofprints.weebly.com), will compete in Ponies of America’s (POA) July nationals in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

While Jacob, a silver horse with a striking white mane and tail, won’t be in Tulsa with Kelly and her daughter, he was the catalyst for Ruby to show horses. When Ruby was three years old, Jacob captivated Kelly at a miniature horse show. Since his price tag exceeded their budget, they passed. But seven months later, the owner called from Ohio, remembering Kelly and Ruby, and offered to give them the stunning miniature because she wanted him to be around children. Ruby embraced the responsibility and often says, “I just want to braid Jacob’s tail and love on him. He’s my best boy.”

After two years of showing Jacob in-hand on the ground, Ruby began riding under the instruction of Amy Robinson and her 13-year-old daughter Alexis at Star Stables in Indianapolis.

Alexis’ 54-inch pony Casper soon became Ruby’s companion in competition. Even though Kelly could have taught her daughter to ride, she wanted “to be her supporter and encourager rather than her coach in order to keep the ‘mom role’ intact.”

Kelly believes leasing a horse is a great way for people to decide if they want to eventually own one. “It gives people a good opportunity to see if they have the financial resources and time to own a horse.

Owning a horse is not a hobby but a lifestyle,” said Kelly.

EQUESTRIAN LEGACY

Living on four acres near Needham in Clark Township, the Lynns keep nine horses, including four they own, in a 100-year-old

barn originally built on a farm dating back to the 1890s. Callie, Kelly’s retired Quarter Horse, and Bo, another longtime, familyowned Quarter Horse, provide companionship for Ruby’s Jacob.

Kelly’s three nieces, her sister Kya Coryell and her mother Jayne Mullendore also keep their horses there.

Three generations of their family have grown up loving horses.

During her childhood, Kelly’s mother had a backyard horse but wasn’t able to take riding lessons, so she got hurt quite a bit.

Consequently she wanted her daughters Kelly and Kya to know how to ride well. Both daughters completed the full10years in 4-H and took lessons at Star Stables.

Not only has Kelly’s family bonded through loving horses, but also most of her friendships and even her profession have developed through their equestrian lifestyle. While at Ball State University (BSU) pursuing a degree in graphic design, Kelly participated in collegiate competitions. She and her BSU friends would travel to other colleges, draw the number of the horse, and ride it during competitions. Now two of those friends live five minutes away in Fairland. “Horse friends tend to be very loyal and very close,” said Kelly.

Not only does horse ownership provide opportunities to develop friendships, it also fosters responsibility. Kelly noted, “For every hour that we’re riding, there’s10hours of grunt work, like feeding, cleaning the stable and making sure the horse has water.”

Kelly’s passion for horses has merged into her photography career that before was simply a hobby. She loves taking portraits, especially high school senior pictures. When these are combined with horses, it’s pure joy for Kelly. “If it’s not a portrait, I don’t want to take it. And I love capturing the horse’s personality like you would in taking a human portrait.” (KellyLynnPhotography.com) “To photograph horses well, you have to know horses, and no two horses are the same,” said Kelly, whose knowledge of the breeds and their uses helps during the typical 45-minute photo shoot. Also important is selecting the ideal time of day for the time of year. “In capturing the moment, it’s magical when it all falls together.”

Many of Kelly’s clients are from surrounding states, but she has a growing local customer base. “I’ve been very blessed that my business is established. Sometimes it comes in waves,” said Kelly. Often her clients are high school seniors who want photos taken with their horses. Her work is multi-faceted. “I like to tell people that I work with kids, animals and the weather, so I’m definitely not a control freak.”

When Ruby competes in the POA Nationals this month, most people watching in Tulsa, Oklahoma, won’t know the challenges this sixyear-old has faced. Few will understand she has overcome a medical condition—vascular malformation—that once had her in a wheelchair.

When Ruby competes, she wears a compression garment on her right leg. “She’s a spunky kid who has to work harder but loves it,” said Kelly.

Working hard includes competing in both 4-H and POA, the latter offering more classes for young kids than any other breed organization. Ruby competes in showmanship, which includes ground, Western, English, Trail and Speed events. These require her to communicate well with her pony, especially in events like Trail, that involves an obstacle course, and Contesting Speed, that includes barrel racing. In costume class competition, both the kids and ponies can dress up. Ruby once outfitted Casper like a ballerina with a pink tutu and ballet slippers adorning his hoofs.

Because Ruby competes in the under-six division, Kelly holds onto her pony for safety, typically called leadline. Yet she would rather lose than have her mother help cue Casper. “Not every six-year-old can handle that level of competition, but Ruby seems to have the right attitude about it.”

Competitions for horse enthusiasts are plentiful in Central Indiana.

Ruby and Casper competed in the POA-sponsored Eastern Classic, held the end of May in Cloverdale. Johnson County’s 4-H Horse and Pony Club, called Hoofprints, helps kids prepare for these competitions. Center Grove-area resident Melissa Veenhuizen, currently club vice president, explained, “We offer a number of clinics and workshops for youth who own or lease a horse. These are taught by experienced adults from a variety of disciplines.”

EQUINE EXPERIENCE

With over10years’ experience as a Johnson County 4-H leader, Melissa understands this organization’s value and purpose. During winter months, participants study horse judging and basic horse knowledge, called Hippology, culminating in the “Horse Bowl,” a quiz format competition. After May 15, the kids prepare for July’s Johnson County Fair.

Preparation for Trail includes maneuvering horses through a series of obstacles, like walking over a bridge, side passing, opening a rope gate, riding up to a mailbox and opening it, and backing up the horse. Kids can show horses in-hand, which simply means leading them. These classes are judged by how well the routine is arranged.

In Showmanship, the youth will execute a pattern with the horse.

“During these, the guys dress in sport jackets and ties and the girls dress in bling,” said Melissa.

All three of the Veenhuizen children, Katie, Ben, and Deklin, completed 10 years of 4-H, the largest youth organization in the United States. In fact, Ben, now 23 years old, met his future wife, Amanda, during a Hippology class in 2007. Following his mother’s example, he currently serves as a 4-H leader. “Our kids were involved and given opportunities to observe and articulate their observations in activities like horse judging, public speaking, and demonstrations. Being involved in 4-H is wonderful for teaching responsibility and life skills. It gives them poise and confidence,” said Melissa.

Another Center Grove family, Vaughn and Veronica Sebree and their three children, Abi, David, and DeAnn, are very active in

Johnson County’s 4-H. While the family owns six horses, Abi, who has completed 10 years, enjoys her two horses: Tuxedo shows in Performance, and Diesel competes in speed and rodeo-style. Abi’s affinity for horses began early. “I rode my first horse on my first birthday.”

The Sebrees’ love for horses spans generations with Veronica participating in open shows and DeAnn, her youngest daughter, now beginning to show. They keep busy competing as Abi showed her horses every weekend in June. “I’ve learned a lot of time management and leadership skills while participating in Hoofprints and horse shows. In general, 4-H teaches you to develop people skills,” said Abi. Center Grove’s Bridget and Brielle Tilson, clients of Kelly Lynn, also share the mother-daughter bond of loving horses. “It’s been really good. I rode in my 20s and started taking lessons, but when I became pregnant with Brielle, I gave those up. Being busy raising four daughters kept me from resuming until Brielle at 15 decided she wanted a horse. We’ve become equal partners in caring for Buddy.”

As many local families know, loving horses can become a lifestyle.

Nearly since birth, Braydon Dixon has had issues with his ears. He began having ear infections very early in life, with his eardrum rupturing at three months old. By the age of one, he was not walking and was scarcely making any sounds. At 18 months, he was receiving First Steps therapy for speech, as well as occupational therapy.

By the age of two, he had his adenoids

removed and tubes in his ears at least seven times. Doctors saw improvement as he learned to talk and walk, but his parents knew his hearing was affected, presumably by the ear infections.

TUMORS IN HIS EARS

Fast forward two years: when Braydon was four, doctors discovered that he had cholesteatomas, which are noncancerous tumors that can destroy the bones of hearing as they grow. When the skin of a

ruptured eardrum grows through the hole into the middle ear, a cholesteatoma forms.

If there is an infection in the middle ear, the skin continues to grow until becoming a tumor called a cholesteatoma. These tumors are extremely rare, but Braydon’s case was significant in that he had them in both ears.

In addition, both had spidered in their growth to encompass his ossicles (the bones located in the middle ear). When they surgically removed the cholesteatomas, the ossicles came with them.

This left Braydon with significant hearing loss. However, no one knew just how considerable the loss was until he was in second grade, when during a hearing test the therapist discovered that he was reading her lips. “He did fine repeating her, until she covered her mouth,” said his mom Reagan.

“Then we knew how bad his hearing was.”

Hearing aids were next for Braydon, though they were not as helpful as the family had hoped they would be. Traditional hearing aids are designed to help the bones vibrate, but since Braydon lacks some of the bones in his ear, he still could not hear well.

Discouraged, the family felt as though they were back to square one.

INDIANA’S NEW SECOND CHANCE LAW Writer / Mario Massillamany

We all make mistakes in our youth.

Sometimes even as adults. Luckily for us, the Indiana General Assembly just revised the expungement laws (Indiana Code 35-5-5.5 and 35-38-8, 9) to give Hoosiers a second chance. The Legislature understood that old arrests and convictions can prevent you from getting a job, renting an apartment, serving in the military, or participating in service groups. Known as the “Second Chance Law,” the new law allows for sealing arrest records and expunging certain convictions.

SEALING PRIOR ARRESTS

Sometimes a person will get arrested but the charges will be dismissed due to mistaken identity, not committing the crime, or lack of evidence. But those arrests still appear in that person’s record. Under the new law, if you were arrested but never convicted of the crime charged, you can have the arrest sealed one year later. This can be vital for future employment, as the arrest will not appear in a background check, nor would you need to disclose the arrest on a job application.

EXPUNGING YOUR RECORD

If you were convicted of a misdemeanor or Class D Felony that was reduced to a misdemeanor (AMS), you can petition the court for an expungement five years after the conviction. For D Felony convictions that did not result in a bodily injury, the waiting period is eight years from the date of conviction.

Almost everyone has had the experience of being hungry for a filling lunch, but not having the appetite for spending a lot of money. MOODY'S BUTCHER SHOP HOLDS RIBBON CUTTING

It opened in May, but Moody’s Butcher Shop waited until June 17 to hold its official ribbon cutting. The store, located at 862 S. State Road 135 next to McNamara Florist, is their third suburban Indianapolis location. They opened their first store in Avon in 2002 and added a second in Zionsville in 2012.

Meat at the shop comes from Moody’s Ladoga farm and from other Indiana farmers. The store offers produce from a new local family business: Indy Family Produce. Locally grown produce is a new venture of Indy Family Farms. A wider selection of produce is available at their location west of State Road 37, north of Smith Valley Road. Various local restaurants use Moody’s meat and Indy Family Produce. Both will be available at other retail locations in the near future.



FRANCISCAN ALLIANCE BREAKS GROUND ON HOSPICE FACILITY End-of-life care is an emotional and deeply personal journey for patients and their families, who often find themselves needing a variety of resources. They soon will have a new place to find the support they need.

“For the last two years we have aggressively ramped up our campaign to build a free-standing hospice facility, complementing the exceptional home hospice and palliative care services that we have provided for more than two decades to 4,000 families in south-central Indiana,” said Robert J. Brody, president and chief executive officer for Franciscan St. Francis.

Financed by privately raised funds and by matching contributions provided by the Mishawaka-based Franciscan Alliance, the freestanding facility features: • • • •

Private rooms for patients and families Large common area for families and kitchen Chapel and prayer garden High-quality, holistic care for all patients, families, and loved ones, regardless of their financial situations

• Only facility of its kind between the far north side of Indianapolis and Columbus The facility and staff anticipate serving more than 600 families annually after its completion date in 2015. In addition, it is the fulfillment of a mission of Franciscan Alliance.

“One of our core values is the gift of life is so valued, and that each person is cared for with such joy, respect, dignity, fairness and compassion so that he or she is consciously aware of being loved,” said Sister Jane Marie Klein, OSF, chairperson of Franciscan Alliance Board of Trustees, who was present for the announcement.

“Whether assisting through the miracle of childbirth, nursing a patient back to health, or caring for them during the dying process—our system carries on Christ’s healing and teaching ministries.”

Total gifts, pledges and matching funds have propelled the project to near its $10 million total construction cost. The campaign will seek to raise an additional $2 million to establish an endowment to sustain Hospice House well into the future.

Knitting for Life FOR THE SAKE OF A HOSPICE HOME

Sister Marlene Shapley, an Order of St. Francis nun, has invested her life in serving God through serving the spiritual and physical needs of people. Yet even she has been surprised at the simple way she and others have been able to make a difference as of late.

Who knew knitting scarves could raise so much money for a good cause—a hospice house? Or that these wavy ruffle scarves would sell, as the saying goes, like hotcakes?

Sister Marlene, vice president of mission services, and co-worker Susan Douglas at Franciscan St. Francis Hospital on the south side of Indianapolis, have been delighted to see a simple craft project bring forth more life than expected. Since last October, the sale of the scarves has added to the total Franciscan St. Francis amount needed to begin building a freestanding Hospice House on the southside campus.

How much difference can selling scarves make? As of June: $10,655. That’s pretty good for a craft project.

WHY A HOSPICE HOUSE?

The hospice concept is to provide aid during temporary ailments that require

significant recuperative time, or to care for people who need full-time care in their final days on earth. The Hospice House will be a home away from home when a patient needs more care than family members can give. This facility will be in addition to the home hospice services Franciscan St. Francis Health already offers.

Sister Marlene knows personally how lifealtering that help can be. Because she is a trained nurse, she was able to care for her father as he succumbed to cancer. Five years later, her brother also died of cancer. Her belief in the value of what a hospice facility can accomplish is reflected in her passion.

“Hospice House will be a residential facility to provide comfort for family who cannot take care of someone in their home,” she says. “Not every family has a daughter who is a nurse. People underestimate what it takes to care full-time for a loved one.”

The level and intensity of the work involved with such care was something Sister Marlene could provide because of her professional training. However, the emotional challenges are an additional— and often overlooked—factor. While giving proper medical care to her father, she says, “At points, I couldn’t be his daughter. I had to be his nurse.”

SCARF-A-WHAT?

Susan Douglas, manager of the hospital dialysis department, brought the idea of making ruffle scarves to Sister Marlene for a fundraiser. Douglas’ mother had died of cancer. So both women had a personal stake in helping others through crucial times.

Franciscan St. Francis Health was holding its third annual ‘Mammothon’ in October 2013. Why not help raise funds for the Hospice House with a Scarf-a-thon? They would make lightweight scarves roiling with colorful ruffles.

The two women, joined by Douglas’ stepmother, got busy several months prior to the Mammothon. A Mammothon offers opportunity for busy women to schedule a convenient mammogram during the extended medical hours of 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Research indicates that nearly one-third of eligible women do not get mammograms, even though early detection can reduce breast cancer deaths by 30 percent. The Mammothons make it easy for women to get a test that has significantly improved the lives of thousands through early detection.

Mammothons also give women who are a bit nervous about the screening a social setting, so they feel more comfortable with refreshments and door prizes available.

Special tables were set up at the fall event to sell the fluff y-looking scarves. The Oasis Gift Shop in the Cancer Center also sells the scarves. Between the October and May 2014 Mammothons, more than 700 flew out the doors.

Others are now involved in knitting or crocheting new scarves. An open invitation was extended for knitters to all employees. Twenty-four responded. “We provide the yarn.

Then we teach them how to do it,” notes Sister Marlene. “One of the hospital housekeepers learned. At first, it was hard for her. Then she got it. She felt so proud!”

House have brought the project close to its $10 million construction goal. A $2 million endowment will then be raised to sustain the House into the future.

HOSPICE HOUSE TO OPEN

Hospice House broke ground in June and expects to offer full-time, holistic care by fall 2015. Features will include private rooms for patients and their families, a large common area and a prayer garden. It will be the only facility of its kind between the far north side of Indianapolis and Columbus, Indiana.

Sister Marlene is pleased because it is designed to look and feel like home.

“We’ll have a chapel in the Hospice House,” she says. “The sacraments will be available.” Christ-like loving care will encompass the patients and their families.

The chapel will be available, as well, for use by ministers of other denominations. Funerals can also be held in the chapel. “Once someone has lived in the Hospice House for a time, it becomes home,” Sister says. “So having a funeral there can make sense.”

HOME IMPROVEMENTS Summer is here and home improvement projects are planned.

Our family was preparing to get some of these long-desired improvements accomplished. Our projects included a new front door, porch post repair and new flooring.

Nevertheless, just when things were moving along swimmingly, we had an unexpected disruption to our well-laid plans. Can you guess what it was? If you thought perhaps it was Murphy, you would be correct.

On one particular Sunday, my husband noticed there was ice forming on the pipes attached to our HVAC system. Then we looked at the outdoor unit. The fan was not spinning very fast.

And to top it off, my husband was leaving on a business trip the following morning. So, the next day, I made the call to a heating and cooling company to come to the house.

The repair technician emerged from the basement and was ready to share the results of his findings. It was not good. There were many issues regarding our heating and cooling system.

We are the original owners of our home and have lived in it for more than 14 years. On a positive note, he was surprised it didn’t happen sooner, based on the age of the system and what was installed in the home originally.

Our options were to do band-aid repairs every so often that would most likely cause us to spend more over time, eventually leading to replace the units individually, or replace the HVAC system now.

Have you encountered this situation? It is not cheap to put in a new HVAC system. The cost is staggering and equals a nice summer vacation. As mentioned, my husband was travelling, so we had an emergency meeting over the phone to discuss our options. We opted to take care of the whole thing now.

Having an emergency fund makes it much easier to make these decisions. The emergency fund is designed to keep a cushion of cash easily available for situations such as this or a loss of income. Having 3-6 months of income saved gives enough of a cushion to handle one of these unexpected, yet expected, homeownership events.

Now we begin rebuilding the emergency fund and wait for the next Murphy visit. We know it’s always just a matter of time and here’s hoping that it will be a much smaller expense. As it relates to homeownership, my father-in-law would say, “You don’t own your home, it owns you.” Boy did he get that right.

The company came out and the wait for diagnosis was almost too much. You know what it’s like to wait for good news, like the birth of a new baby? Take that, flip it to the negative side and add the discomfort of knowing this may cost a chunk of change.
