LIFE IS SWEET AT BUTTER SUGAR FLOUR IN TRAFALGAR Writer / Fredda Kovacs Photography Provided

Nestled in the heart of Trafalgar, a charming new coffee and pastry bar has emerged. Butter Sugar Flour is captivating locals and visitors alike with its delectable offerings and cozy ambiance. Since its grand opening last December, Butter Sugar Flour has quickly become a beloved hub for those seeking a sweet and savory culinary experience. Kristyna Voris, owner, jokingly explains the inspiration for the clever name. “That’s just my unique ability to not be creative when it comes to pastry naming,” she says. “Those are three ingredients I use the most.” Upon entering Butter Sugar Flour, patrons are welcomed by the sweet aroma of freshly brewed coffee beans and the sight of artfully displayed pastries adorning the glass counters. The atmosphere exudes warmth with its comfortable furnishings, inviting you to unwind and savor a moment of tranquility. “Everything was built and designed

Kristyna Voris and her Mother, Kathy

around the fireplace mantel,” Voris says. “I was scrolling through my phone one evening and spotted it on the Madison Street Salvage website. It was exactly what I had envisioned for the space.” Years of baking for personal enjoyment and for friends and family, with glowing reviews, provided inspiration in opening a brickand-mortar shop. The unique ingredients of impressive baking skills, knowledge of project management, and a dash of throwing caution to the wind, provided a recipe for success. “I wasn’t expecting it to grow the way it did,” Voris says. “We first saw our social media pages exploding and then started getting calls from literally all over.” The menu boasts an array of fresh, fromscratch, carefully crafted pastries and danishes, buttery scones, decadent cakes and cupcakes, elegant macarons, cookies, brownies, fresh bread and muffins, and more. The must-have treat is the deliciously sweet, as-big-as-yourhead cinnamon roll. “Quality and taste are very important to me,” Voris says. “Many of the ingredients we use are a little less traditionally used - ingredients that elevate the flavor profile. This is what sets us apart and this is what customers remember.” The coffee selection is equally exceptional. Butter Sugar Flour has found the perfect partner in Shane Case of Mylke Coffee Company. “Coffee is very much an art form, from the coffee bean grower to the roaster to the barista who pulls shots,” Voris says. “Great coffee doesn’t happen on accident. It’s TownePost.com / DECEMBER 2023 / CENTER GROVE MAGAZINE / 7

the culmination of the talent, passion and dedication of the grower, roaster and barista, all coming together in a single cup for you to enjoy.” Butter Sugar Flour has easily become a vibrant part of the community. Their success has been built, in part, in the belief that every cup of coffee they serve helps to strengthen relationships. They contribute to the community through regular donations to local schools, active participation in community events, and creating events of their own. One such example is Thanksgiving Sharing. “My dad felt strongly that people shouldn’t be without a hot meal on Thanksgiving,” Voris says. “It wasn’t unusual for our family and friends to gather along with the occasional complete stranger.” In his memory, Butter Sugar Flour, and with several generous donations from the community, helped to provide a hot meal on Thanksgiving to those who would have otherwise gone without.”

As their one-year anniversary approaches this month, Butter Sugar Flour has plans for a fun, celebratory soirée. They’ll offer specials, giveaways, commemorative cookies, and all of this will come complete with the red-carpet treatment literally. “Celebrating with our customers and the community is natural,” Voris says. “We enjoy seeing our customers several times a week, really getting to know them and what’s going on in their lives. We all feel like family.” Butter Sugar Flour is located at 105 North State Road 135 in Trafalgar. For anyone seeking a delightful escape into the world of exceptional pastries and coffee, Butter Sugar Flour stands a testament to culinary excellence and community spirit, one delectable bite at a time. THE SPIRIT TO SUCCEED HABERDASHER ARTISAN DISTILLERY REPRESENTS OWNER’S DREAM COME TRUE

Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photography Provided

Brooks Bemis, a 2009 Center Grove High School grad, was a member of the 2008 state championship football team. “It was really cool to be a part of that comeback game,” says Bemis. “I think that win taught me that anything is possible.” He’s testing that theory now by venturing out with something new and just as big. It’s a long-held passion project that he has transformed into a new career. Bemis opened Haberdasher Artisan Distillery in the Garment Factory Events facility in downtown Franklin, and he just celebrated its grand opening in October.

After graduating from Franklin College with a degree in business, Bemis worked in industrial distribution, selling manufacturing supplies. He married fellow Center Grove grad Lauren Casey, morning anchor on WRTV, and the two enjoyed visiting various distilleries and breweries. “We loved hearing all the stories, and how every brewery and distillery made their product their own way,” says Bemis. “We also enjoyed checking out the decor of the tasting rooms. Whenever we went to those places, we’d comment on how cool it would be to own one of our own.” Back then, the pair was working staggered schedules, so Bemis had free time on his

hands. He began researching distilleries and learned a lot from the American Distilling Institute. In 2017 he applied for a permit, and began distilling in 2018. For the next four years he still worked his nineto-five job, and distilling became his night and weekend hobby. During that time he honed his craft and developed an inventory of products, since a lot of the products he makes are barrel-aged and take years to mature. Last year he came to a crossroads. With two little ones at home (Archie, 4, and Isla, 1), it became too much to work a day job, be a parent and run the distillery. He had to make a choice. (Their daughter is named after a region of Scotland that makes some

of their favorite whiskey, which is a little nugget of awesome.) “I’d been coming in on weekends at 3 a.m.,” says Bemis. “Although I’ve always hated waking up in the morning, I never minded doing it if I was coming into the distillery. I figured if I don’t mind getting up at 3 a.m. when it’s zero degrees outside to come to work, then maybe I should make this my career.” His wife was hugely supportive, as were his dad and uncle, who were both in commercial development and suggested he utilize a part of the Garment Factory for his distillery. While the historic Garment Factory is a giant, 50,000-square-foot building that can host weddings as large as 400 people, the 1,600-square-foot space for Haberdasher was a completely raw, undeveloped warehouse space - ideal for a tasting room. The room, which holds about 50 people, is decorated to blend industrial with elegant. It has exposed beams and duct work, as well as the original exterior brick TownePost.com / DECEMBER 2023 / CENTER GROVE MAGAZINE / 11

wall built 80 years ago. It’s clear that it was a factory, and yet they’ve installed tin-tiled walls and quartz bar tops, and hung a chandelier to fancy it up. Plus, the space includes large windows so you can see the distilling equipment.

“It’s not just a bar,” says Bemis. “It’s a working distillery.” Haberdasher’s got a midcentury modern, 1920s vibe. The space includes a wall-wrap mural of Harry Truman because he owned a haberdashery in the early 1920s. It’s a hat tip to those bygone days when men would dress up in fancy hats and buttons. Community response has been positive, with folks traveling from all over including Westfield, Columbus, Terre Haute and Louisville. “We knew distilling was popular with the bourbon boom and all, but we didn’t realize just how ready people were for a distillery,” says Bemis. “So many people have told us, ‘It’s about time we got a distillery here!’ We consider ourselves a distillery for the spirits enthusiast.” That’s not surprising given that they make unique products from scratch. All of their spirits are manufactured and bottled right there in the building. “We make them as robust, unique and flavorful as possible,” says Bemis.

They specialize in whiskeys and gins, and their tasting room is set up to showcase those drinks. “A lot of our spirits test the boundaries,” says Bemis, noting that they sell products that don’t fit into normal identities of spirits. For example, they’ve got one that’s distilled from beer. “We like to step out of the box and create spirits that aren’t already out there,” he says. “For

instance, we make a light whiskey.” Currently the distillery is open from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays. Their limited hours are twofold. Firstly, they need production time to make the spirits. Secondly, they want to leave room for private tastings. Last year Bemis worked full time at the distillery, getting the buildout done as

well as producing as much product as possible, bottling, and labeling. “This has been a dream for years, so it feels really good to finally be open,” he says. Haberdasher Artisan Distillery is located at 81 East Wayne Street in Franklin. For more information, call 317-526-3679 or visit haberdasherdistillery.com.

UNLOCKING YOUR BEST HEALTH As we navigate the journey of aging, we often find ourselves facing persistent health issues like fatigue, joint pain, insomnia and more. Sometimes these symptoms are brushed aside as an inevitable part of getting older. But what if there was a place that offered a fresh perspective and a path to reclaiming your health with evidencebased solutions? Meet Yoo Direct Health, a growing practice recognized as a leader in functional and aesthetic medicine. Their mission is simple, yet profound; to provide patients with the best possible outcomes. They’ve been doing just that helping patients reach their health goals.

A COMMITMENT TO EXCELLENCE Yoo Direct Health is celebrating its fifth anniversary in November, and they’re part of a growing portion of the healthcare industry - functional and aesthetic medicine. Founder and Chief Executive Officer Lexi Yoo, FNP-BC/CPNP, says she’s proud that Yoo Direct Health has become a leader in the industry as they’ve continued to grow and innovate. They welcomed Nikki Keserich, NP, and Allen Stewart, FNP-BC. Both practitioners offer a unique perspective, as they were patients prior to joining the practice. Stewart has a special interest in men’s health, and his perspective as a patient and a practitioner adds a valuable dimension to their practice, allowing them to better understand and address the symptoms experienced by men and the impact it can have on them, their families and their relationships. What sets Yoo Direct Health apart is their commitment

to education and excellence.

patients achieve the outcomes they seek.

New providers go through a 90-day orientation process, which includes hands-on clinical experience, shadowing all positions within the practice, as well as access to specialized content from the Yoo Direct Health Training Academy, designed by Lexi herself. This comprehensive approach ensures that every team member understands not only the services they offer, but also the roles of their colleagues, to provide seamless patient care. The commitment to education goes beyond the initial training period. The providers at Yoo Direct Health are continuously learning through internal trainings and conferences to not only build on the knowledge they already have, but also to stay at the forefront of cutting-edge therapies that may help their

EMBRACING INNOVATIVE THERAPIES AND TECHNOLOGY Yoo Direct Health is dedicated to staying at the forefront of innovative therapies and technology. Constant learning and growth in an ever-changing industry is critical to Lexi and her staff. Over the past five years she’s continued to add innovative therapies such as bioidentical hormone therapy, gut health protocols, ozone therapy, sexual wellness protocols (the “O” and “P” shot), ultrasound technology, as well as a comprehensive weight-loss program that includes in-depth body composition testing, health coaching, and incorporating modalities such as peptide therapy. Yoo

Direct Health incorporates the use of ultrasound technology for the medical and aesthetic side of their practice. Using ultrasound enhances patient outcomes, safety and precision by providing realtime imaging guidance that enables the providers to visualize internal structures, monitor tissue response, and perform procedures with greater accuracy and minimized risks. “Since we’ve been using the ultrasound technology, we’ve been able to help other offices with patients experiencing complications from their aesthetic treatment,” Lexi says. “We know with the ultrasound, and we can safely and effectively help diagnose and potentially treat the complication.” Ozone is a therapeutic process, which

That was a year-long process and I lost 77 pounds.” Shaffer emphasizes that Yoo Direct Health believes in empowering patients to take control of their well-being, and Ramsey’’s transformation is the ultimate testament to that philosophy. The staff at Yoo Direct Health are proud to have played a part in her remarkable transformation.

“We attend a large amount of educational conferences, and while we’re there, we listen and learn,” says Min Yoo, chief operating officer. “Then, when we return, we take those critical pieces of information and work to implement them in our practice for the benefit of our patients. We also want to ensure we’re not just implementing new therapies without standards for their outcomes.”

Jessica Shaffer, NP, leads the team at the Greenwood location. Myla Ramsey, a longtime patient, exemplifies the transformative power of Yoo Direct Health. Frustrated with the lack of information and care she received after giving birth to her fourth child, she sought help from Shaffer. Ramsey underwent hormone pellet replacement therapy, peptide therapy for weight loss, and thyroid health optimization. “I started with Yoo Direct Health in April 2022, and in a year I felt like a completely different person,” Ramsey says. “I know as we get older, things are taken at face value as a part of getting older. I just felt like myself again, which made everything in my life so much easier.” Ramsey says she initially aimed to get a tummy tuck to repair her muscles after giving birth to four children. She says she knew she couldn’t have the procedure done until she got down to her goal weight. Ramsey says she knew she was looking at a lengthy process. “I was put on a peptide therapy for weight loss,” Ramsey says. “With the peptide it’s a slow process and you still have to work hard. I

Even loved ones can be a mystery when it comes to figuring out what gifts you’re getting for everyone over the holidays. Older loved ones can be especially hard to shop for, as they seem to have it all - lifetimes of knickknacks and keepsakes. To fulfill its mission of being local, helpful and personal, CarDon & Associates, an Indianabased, senior-living management company, compiled this list of gift ideas for seniors that stand out from your typical stocking stuffers and even embrace Hoosier history.

STORYWORTH: These days, most

of us document our lives digitally. But many people of older generations still appreciate the feeling of flipping through the paper pages of a book or running their fingers across glossy photos. Storyworth allows subscribers to create a physical memoir that ages as gracefully as the other books on their shelves. With the subscription, they are emailed a question each week, and at the end of a year, Storyworth will bind their life stories into a beautiful hardcover book. This gift is a great way to connect with loved ones across distances, engage a parent or grandparent’s memory, and preserve family stories for generations to come. Go to storyworth.com to start a book for your loved one.
