Brian Alvey is willing to go the extra mile for military veterans in need of help.

Alvey, a former soldier with the United States Army who served in Afghanistan and retired in 2012, started The Warrior 110 nonprofit organization with his friend Adam Smith. They created the program to raise awareness and funds for veterans suffering from physical and emotional ailments such as post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety, suicide and traumatic brain injury.

Alvey and Smith raise funds through ruck marches - weighted walks often used in military training - that stretch for more than 100 miles. Their most recent ruck march started in New Albany on November 7 and concluded on November 11 (Veterans Day) at The Mint, a bourbon bar in Franklin that Alvey owns.

“Adam Smith and I talked about doing something to help veterans and we couldn’t come up with anything at first,” Alvey says.

“After I thought about it for a while, I came up with this idea, and Adam loved it.”

During their first ruck march in July of 2019, Alvey and Smith raised $50,000.

They walked about 115 miles from New Albany to Franklin.

Alvey served in the 151st Infantry doing long-range surveillance.

The funds raised are allocated to the Brian Bill Foundation in Florida, the leaders of which endeavor to assist soldiers suffering from a variety of ailments.

“I tell a lot of people that when we sprain our ankles, we go to a doctor for help,” Alvey says. “Well, when we sprain the most sensitive part of our body, the brain, some people just say, ‘Hey, it’s alright. I’ll just walk it off.’ It doesn’t work that way.

It doesn’t make sense. We have to talk to someone and have a dialogue. We’ve got to encourage people to go get some help.”

“The Brian Bill Foundation is an equine therapy facility founded by Scott Bill, the father of Navy Seal Brian Bill,” Alvey says. “It’s a great program that really helps veterans. It’s a good facility that does a lot of positive work to help people who need it.”

Alvey says The Warrior 110 conveys a message to veterans that there are positive ways to get help.

“Some veterans isolate themselves, and that’s not the way to go,” he says. “They can have professionals help them.”

Alvey says many veterans struggle with depression after they come home from serving in places like Afghanistan.

“The transition back to their old lives can really be rough for a lot of veterans,” he says. “We invited the public to go with us on our walk from November 7 through 11.”

running The Mint and The Warrior 110 organization, he also serves as vice president of Festival Country Indiana, and works at The Warrior 110 fitness center in Franklin.

“The Warrior 110 gym is a full-combat gym with Brazilian jiu-jitsu, boxing and other things,” Alvey says. “We have two amazing groups that have joined together to facilitate a majority of the training - the Franklin Jiu Jitsu Club, also known as Griz Cave, and Indy Combat Grappling.

Our goal is to facilitate the opportunity for veterans to pick up a new mission in life through the study of jiu-jitsu, boxing, etcetera, and we will be offering such things as yoga as well.”

Alvey says the November ruck march was highly successful.

“We got it done again,” he says. “The hardest part was that I hurt my knee, and had some leg and shin issues, but we finished it. We persevered. We were able to accomplish what we set out to do, which was spread awareness about some important issues. It’s a shame we didn’t get more local television coverage, but hopefully we were able to inspire some war veterans to go get help if they need it. They need to know that people care about them, and acknowledge all of the great things they did.”

As a young boy, Edward Patterson used to paint caricatures on Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis, charging $1 for his work. For a period of time he stepped away from his art, but returned to it in the 1980s when he was introduced to “The Joy of Painting” television series hosted by Bob Ross.

“That inspired me to pick up a brush and start painting again,” says Patterson, who traveled all over the U.S. and Europe taking classes to improve his craft.

While studying in the Netherlands and Belgium he was intrigued by larger portraits, and inspired to step up his game and attempt to paint on a larger scale.

When he returned home in 2013, he made plans to paint the Garden of Eden. He rented out Garfield Park Conservatory, hired two models, and took photos of the scene from which to paint. He was all set to work but wondered where he could display the painting once it was complete.

Since his subject matter was biblical he thought a church might be interested, but after several rejections he had all but given up. He was on his way home when he saw

He spoke to Steve Schellin, senior pastor at Southland, and shared his idea. Schellin met with the church elders, and rather than say no to one painting, they said yes to 12. When deciding which Bible stories to depict, Patterson selected scenes that were not only easily recognizable, but also told a story from beginning to end. Ultimately Patterson completed 10 paintings depicting the Garden of Eden, Noah’s Ark, Parting of the Red Sea, Ten Commandments, Last Supper, Crucifixion, Sacrifice of Isaac, Daniel and the Lion’s Den, Nativity, and Resurrection of Jesus.

“I happened to be preaching a bird’s eye view of the Bible,” Schellin says. “Having paintings that reflected those stories seemed like a good fit.”

Though the plan was to complete the paintings in one year, it took more than eight years because each painting took Patterson roughly 400 hours to complete and factoring in the time his two assistants put in, the number is closer to 1,200 hours.

Through the years, roughly 100 volunteers helped bring Patterson’s paintings to life.

“Some helped out one night, and others helped all eight and a half years,” says Patterson, who wrote a book about his artistic journey titled “Painting the Bible Story” (available through the official Barnes & Noble website). It describes his inspiration for the project as well as his painting techniques.

Work on the paintings slowed when Patterson was diagnosed with motor neuropathy, a condition in which muscles in the extremities gradually weaken.

“I couldn’t stand on the ball of my right foot,” Patterson says. “My entire body was getting weaker. Nerve damage went with it and that slowed me down quite a bit.”

He plugged along and painted as often as he could. At the time Patterson was 90% finished with the work, but because his medications and art supplies were costly, he realized he could only complete 10 paintings rather than 12.

One day when he walked into the church, Schellin said to Patterson, “I prayed for you.” He provided no further explanation.

Patterson thanked him and kept walking.

At his next appointment with his neurologist, Patterson got the surprising news that his neuropathy was in remission.

“I sent Pastor Steve a note that said, ‘I owe you one!’” says Patterson, who was able to go back to church with renewed vigor. He finished the last painting in the spring of 2020.

The final challenge involved figuring out where to hang all of the paintings so that they are not only in prominent display but also well protected. Ultimately, the church built a library with lighting to accommodate all 10 paintings.

Patterson was grateful for the opportunity, as is Schellin.

“He painted it for the glory of God, but we can’t say in words how grateful we are to him for the sacrifices he put forth to provide it for us,” Schellin says.

WINTERS PLUMBING KEEPS BUSY DURING PANDEMIC

Steve Winters, owner of Winters Plumbing, 384 N. Madison Avenue, Suite 200, Greenwood, Indiana, started his plumbing career after talking to a friend at his church.

“I had a young family, and I was looking for a career,” Steve Winters says. “There was a gentleman in our church who had his own plumbing business. He hired me on as an apprentice. I went through school, got my journeyman’s license and then went on to get contractors license.”

Winters initially started Winters Plumbers as a side business, but went full time in 2018.

“We began doing this part-time on nights and weekends, mostly,” he says. “But, we decided in 2018 to go full-time as the business continued to grow. Ever since then, we haven’t stopped growing.”

Before that, he worked for other plumbers for 20-plus years to gain valuable insights that paid off.

“I gained experience through various aspects of the plumbing industry, with a couple of different companies,” Steve says. “I worked with new construction, commercial new construction, residential and custom homes. I found my niche in residential service. I really enjoy being with customers and meeting new people.

I like taking care of something that we all have in common, one of the most basic human needs, which is running water and plumbing.”

Our customers are more than just a number to us. We want to treat them like our own family. As stated above, we enjoy connecting with each person through the avenue of a basic human need of clean water and plumbing. In our minds, plumbing isn’t a one size fits all solution. We want to focus on making sure we provide solutions that fit our customers specific needs.”

Winters Plumbing is a family-operated, local company.

“My wife, Jaime, has been very supportive and encouraging as we continue to grow this business,” he says. “Two of my daughters, Brittany and Beth, are both working with me in the business. Brittany is our full-time office manager. Beth works with us part-time, helping our customers as well.”

Winters says his business has thrived on referrals.

“We love our loyal customers, and always appreciate when they refer us to our friends and family,” he adds. “We really wouldn’t be where we are today without our loyal customers.”

“Our business is trending up in home services because people are home more often now, parents working from home and kids doing e-learning from home, we try to provide the services that way so they don’t have to worry about their plumbing. They can focus on the more important things, like family and work. We are striving to be there for them in these different times.”

“Our apprentice is Luke Magee,” Steve says. “He joined us in June 2020. We’re extremely happy to have him on our team. Luke is currently enrolled in an apprenticeship program through Mechanical Skills to earn his Journeyman license and start his career path. He’s a hard worker and connects well with our customers.

“We’ve always been on the south-side of Indy and have found Greenwood to be our home,” he adds. “We like the smalltown feel but like being close to the city of Indianapolis. The community of Greenwood is close-knit and active. It is definitely our home.”

Winter is here and the cold temperatures take their toll on various systems of cars and trucks. Below are three effects that arctic air has on your vehicle that could leave you out in the cold.

Coolant Even on the coldest winter day, after running for a while, your engine generates so much heat that it needs to be cooled.

Engine coolant, often referred to as antifreeze, is liquid that transfers heat produced by the engine to the radiator, where it is convected into the air. While coolant does its work at relatively high temperatures while the engine is running, it must remain stable when the engine is dormant. This means the coolant must not freeze in cold temperatures - hence the name antifreeze. Coolant in good condition remains liquid at negative 30 degrees Fahrenheit or colder. When coolant breaks down, or when the water concentration is too high, the freezing point may rise to the point where the coolant freezes. When it freezes it expands, and when it expands, catastrophic failure can occur. Before your car will ever be left in cold temperatures,

Battery Your car relies on its battery to operate all its electrical systems. The largest demand on the battery is the energy required to start the engine. When temperatures drop, the ability of a standard lead-acid battery to produce electrical current decreases significantly. A battery that easily starts a car in a warm garage may fail to start the same car when it has been sitting outside for a while. Because of this, many people are surprised and confused when their car leaves them stranded on a cold afternoon.

The condition of a battery can easily be tested with a battery load tester. Many local repair shops can test your battery for free. Take advantage of this service and

have the coolant tested. If the freezing point is too high, have the cooling system flushed and fresh coolant installed.

Tires Some of the most critical parts of a car are the tires. They are responsible for transferring the forces responsible for accelerating, braking and turning.

Maintaining the proper air pressure in your tires is important for optimizing these dynamic actions of your vehicle. As ambient air gets colder, the air pressure in your tires tends to drop. Under-inflated tires may become dangerously underinflated when the thermometer dips.

The rubber material of tires also tends to become harder and less pliable in cold weather, which means reduced traction, even in dry conditions. This means longer stopping distances and a greater likelihood of sliding while turning.

Check the air pressure in each tire, including the spare, regularly, and more often in the winter. Even if your car has

a tire pressure monitoring system, it is wise to check the pressure occasionally with a tire gauge to ensure that the system is providing accurate measurements.

CENTER GROVE WRESTLING CLUB OPENS

The Center Grove (CG) Wrestling Club, a youth sports league that serves as a feeder to CG schools wrestling programs, trains students from kindergarten through eighth grade to help them transition to CG High School and become successful wrestlers. Currently, there are three returning state champs on the CG High School team – junior Hayden Watson who took 3rd place a year ago, senior Riley Rust who took 4th place last year and junior Drake Buchanon who took 7th place. Additionally, the freshman class of wrestlers shows considerable promise.

The club, which has been around for years, has always practiced at the high school.

it would probably be early 2021 when administrators would consider letting K-8 students back into the school to practice.

“Wrestling season starts in late October, so if we couldn’t practice this fall, we would have most definitely lost a season,” says Mathew Kelly, a 2014 CG grad and former wrestler who now coaches and runs the CG Wrestling Club.

Following graduation, Kelly joined the Marine Corps. In 2018 he returned to Center Grove, hoping to coach the sport he adores wholeheartedly.

“I wrestled my entire life,” he says. “If someone had told me at their age that we weren’t going to have a season, I would have thought my life was over.”

When Kelly learned that the club wouldn’t have access to the high school for the foreseeable future, he started asking his wrestling friends to put out feelers for a new location. In August the president of the club, Joel Buchanan, whose son Drake wrestles, secured a 6,400-square-foot space in Bargersville located next to FlapJacks, which he turned over to Kelly to transform.

“As long as the building has sat there, this space has never been rented before,” says Kelly, and when the club secured the

location, the walls had exposed insulation and there was no electrical lighting.

The Center Grove wrestling community immediately rallied, offering their services in order to open the club as quickly as possible. Sean Bryk of A Perfect Climate provided heating and cooling products, including a smart thermostat, and offered to complete the installation work.

“We believe in helping out our youth programs. Youth programs allow kids to build relationships, be part of a team, be accountable for their role and learn responsibilities and leadership”, says Bryk.

Landon Clouser of L&D Painting donated paint and volunteered his painting services. Michael Claiborne handled the electrical work, while Dustin Rees of Gladiator Roofing and Restoration built out walls and hung drywall. No one charged for parts, products or labor. They simply wanted to help because many have children who love to wrestle.

The club leaders don’t expect the location to be a short-term solution but rather a long-term benefit, as the space will enable them to do things that other clubs can’t. For instance, they can host small tournaments and clinics. In late October, Bo Nickal, three-time NCAA wrestling champ for Penn State, ran a clinic for kids

from around Indiana.

“I’m going to try my best to not just have this space benefit us, but benefit the area wrestling community in general,” Kelly says.

While most wrestling academies charge $100 or more per month, the CG Wrestling Club charges a one-time fee of $100 that covers the cost of the singlet members wear during the season. The remainder goes toward club operations.

“It’s not a high school program where the school athletic department gives us money,” says Kelly, who has two sons, Cayden, 3, and Micah, 1. “We have to make money to support the club, so we needed a space to generate some kind of income so that we could keep the club running.”

Kelly, who works full-time at a lawn care company, is at the club almost every day after he finishes work. He says his wife Paityn never used to know anything about wrestling, now she never misses a meet.

“I get paid probably 3 cents an hour after you count all of the hours I put in, but I’m not complaining,” adds Kelly, who is eternally grateful to the sport for shaping him into the man he is today.

“It kept me out of trouble - it taught me independence,” says Kelly, noting that while he likes the team aspect of the sport, he also appreciates its focus on personal accountability. “If something goes wrong, it’s on you. There aren’t ten other guys on the field you can blame it on. No wrestler who was ever great only did the minimal requirement. It was always the extra mile, the extra 10 takedowns at the end of practice, and the extra film watching.”

Kelly is grateful and unsurprised by the outpouring of support from the wrestling community.

“It is the strongest sports community in the world,” he says. “Wrestlers are just there for each other.”

Excitement coupled with some anxiety surrounded the start of the 2020 Indiana high school fall sports season following the cancellation of the spring sports season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Many high school coaches and studentathletes were cautiously optimistic that the fall sports season would start, let alone finish, in its entirety. Center Grove High School’s fall sports teams not only started the season, but finished strong with girls golf, boys tennis and boys cross country advancing to the IHSAA State Finals.

The girls golf team opened the season on August 4th versus Greenwood. It was the first CG team event since the Trojan boys basketball team played Greenwood in the IHSAA Sectional championship on March 7th, nearly five months earlier.

Following the win over the Woodmen, CG senior golfer, Meg Fosnot, was just as excited about starting the season as the

victory itself. “I was hoping we would get started. Now that we’ve gotten started, I think we are going to have a great season.”

Yes, indeed, the Trojans did have a great season. CG won the Johnson County Tournament and IHSAA Sectional titles, took third in the IHSAA Regional and tied for eighth in the IHSAA State Finals.

The top three teams in the girls golf Regional qualify for the State Finals. The last time the Trojans advanced out of their extremely competitive Regional was 2015.

Fosnot was thrilled her team got through the Regional this year with a third-place finish. “On the day (of the regional), you just have to have everything working for you. Everything has to line up just right.

We managed to pull through and do it.”

Competing in the State Finals was the icing on the cake for Fosnot, who was playing her final tournament as a CG Trojan. “It was huge to get our team there this year and for us to place so well in

our first year back in five years was just fantastic.”

The CG boys tennis team had high expectations for its 2020 fall sports season with the return of 10 seniors. The Trojans did not disappoint, taking first place in the County Tournament, IHSAA Sectional, IHSAA Regional and IHSAA Semi-State and advancing to the elite eight of the IHSAA State Tournament.

CG senior, Luke Embrey, played number two singles for the Trojans and earned Academic All-State honors with an impressive 4.73 grade point average.

Embrey was very proud of his team’s achievements, especially during a pandemic. “The fact that we were able to overcome the adversity of having three of our varsity starters get quarantined the night before sectionals and still win Sectionals, Regionals, and Semi-state. It was a great accomplishment for us to make it to State and to see the many hours of practicing and playing pay off. It was also a

season where we didn’t know if there was going to even be a season or when it might end so, it was quite rewarding to make it to State.”

Embrey says the sport of tennis and playing it under Center Grove head coach Ivan Smith is unmatched. “Tennis, unlike many other sports which rely on physical size and strength, is a sport in which the amount of time you put in is almost entirely related to the success that you will have as an individual. If you are passionate about tennis and your effort matches that passion, you can be very successful in Coach Smith’s program and have a lot of fun doing it.”

The CG boys cross country team earned its first trip to the IHSAA State Finals last year, placing fourteenth. The Trojans’ motto for the 2020 season was “Aim High.”

Mission accomplished. The cross county team returned to the IHSAA State Finals taking fourth place. The Trojans also

took first in the Johnson County, IHSAA Sectional, and IHSAA Regional Meets.

Sophomore Drew Costelow was CG’s top runner throughout the season and finished 32nd in the state meet. Costelow was overjoyed by his team getting a podium finish at State. “The feeling was amazing, getting on that podium at state. We have this saying that pain is temporary but pride is forever. That saying came into play when we stepped to the start line at state.

We knew when we stepped to the line that it was 15 minutes of pain and once we crossed that finish line at state, pride will be forever. We finished 4th as a team, which is the highest in school history. Our coaching staff was outstanding this year.

Coach Harrell, Coach Stewart, Coach Hewitt, and Coach Fry all coached us to the top and all believed in us that we could get on that podium.”
