“We are excited to welcome Johnson Memorial Health to the Mayo Clinic Care Network,” says Mark V. Larson,

president and CEO of JMH. “Our providers will be able to consult directly with the world’s leading medical experts, enhancing the outstanding care we already provide to the people of Johnson County. Best of all, our patients will have access to Mayo Clinic’s research, diagnostic and treatment resources through their Johnson Memorial Health provider at no extra cost to them.”

JOHNSON MEMORIAL HEALTH JOINS MAYO CLINIC CARE NETWORK

The Mayo Clinic Care Network is not a merger, acquisition or consolidation of hospitals or health-care providers. Rather, it is a collaboration between Mayo Clinic and network members, and it’s a partnership that enables patients to get a second opinion without having to leave Johnson County. Created in 2011, the Mayo Clinic Care Network has 47 member organizations across the U.S., Asia, India, Mexico and the Middle East.

Johnson Memorial Health (JMH) is a nationally recognized network of physicians and health-care resources that recently became even more robust since joining the Mayo Clinic Care Network, a select group of independent health-care providers. Each is carefully vetted by Mayo Clinic and granted special access to Mayo’s clinical, educational, research and operational knowledge, expertise and resources.

“I can speak for the community leaders that serve with me how exciting this collaboration is for our organization and for our community,” says R. Martin Umbarger, JMH Board of Trustees chairperson. “This is a major milestone in the history of Johnson Memorial Health and I couldn’t be more proud.”

“We are honored to enter into this collaborative relationship with Mayo Clinic,” says David Dunkle, M.D.,

Mayo Clinic’s reputation is unsurpassed, which makes sense given that it is known as one of the top hospitals in the world. It is recognized globally as the world leader in high-acuity health care. Patients appreciate that they have the option of having Mayo Clinic review their case, with no additional cost to them.

JMH partners with Hancock Health and Hendricks Regional Health, all of whom are part of a collaborative called Suburban Health Organization, which is comprised of community-based Indiana hospitals who work together to improve access to high-quality health care. They all work together to increase their ability to provide excellent local care.

Everyspecialists.case is, of course, different. In some instances, patients are in search of a second opinion. In other cases, they are looking for alternative treatment options. They may find that the best approach is to be assessed at Mayo, particularly if the case is complicated or multidisciplinary. If a person’s illness is affecting several body systems, it may be best to be evaluated at Mayo Clinic. What’s great about that is the patient is already established so their records have typically been sent over previously, thereby making the process even smoother for the patient.

Having additional physicians in your corner and at your fingertips - the cream of the crop, at that - is truly wonderful and, in some cases, life-changing, because at Mayo Clinic there are specialists, subspecialists, and sub-subspecialists. These docs are on top of the latest data and research in their particular area. Having that kind of knowledge so readily available is mighty helpful.

She says Shaffer was about halfway through the integrative provider program when she told Shaffer she should consider opening her own practice. Shaffer didn’t want to own a business, but felt she could offer exceptional care to patients on the south side through a second Yoo Direct Health location.

Patients often come in with complaints of not feeling their best, tiredness, inability to sustain or lose weight, or being frustrated by not being listened to by another provider.

new, integrative approach to health care is coming to the south side. Lexi Yoo, a double-board-certified nurse practitioner, opened Yoo Direct Health in 2018 in Noblesville, specializing in finding root causes for her patients’ illnesses. The practice offers customized care for each patient in the areas of wellness, functional, anti-aging and aesthetic medicine.

“Even though Jess has completed the residency mentorship program, she’s going to continue to learn,” Lexi says. “This allows our practice to get better at what we do and, in turn, better serve our patients by providing the absolute best outcomes.”

“I followed Lexi for a while on social media and I loved the education she provided,” Shaffer says. “It motivated me to think more about fine-tuning a niche in the functionalmedicine space. During the program, Lexi focused on gut health for one month and thyroid health for another month. The area of functional medicine can be overwhelming because there is so much to learn, but Lexi made it easy to learn.”

Now, Lexi and her team are opening a secondary location at 107 North State Road 135, Suite 101 in Center Grove in October. The secondary location offers aesthetic services such as injectables like Botox, dermal fillers, and hair restoration. Lexi says many patients might start by coming in for a health-related issue, and then realize they can also receive aesthetic treatment.

Shaffer is certified as a BioTe provider, specializing in bioidentical hormone replacement therapy for both men and women. She continues her coursework through the Institute for Functional Medicine and the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine.

Yoo Direct Health also offers nutritional counseling for patients. Many find relief through eliminating certain trigger foods like gluten and dairy. Lexi says removing certain foods from a patient’s diet often leads to less inflammation in the body.

Min says the goal of the Greenwood location will be the same as the Noblesville location. He says the staff is the greatest asset at Yoo Direct Health. They will continue to invest in education to provide high-level results for each patient.

“In discussing what I was doing with Lexi with family and friends, I kept hearing them say they wished there was something like that on the south side,” Shaffer says. “The Center Grove area is growing rapidly. I’m so excited to be able to provide functional wellness to local residents.”

Yoo Direct Health is located at 107 North State Road 135, Suite 101 in Greenwood. For more information, visit yoodirecthealth.com.

“When a patient comes in, we listen first and foremost,” Lexi says. “We listen to how they’re feeling and then we complete a blood panel. We then review the blood panel and initiate a plan from there.”

“This helps the patient achieve sustainable weight loss for the long term,” Lexi says. “We find the root causes of why a patient can’t lose weight and we work to treat those reasons, rather than taking a Band-Aid approach to the problem.”

“Our patients trust us because we’ve taken a well-rounded approach to their medical issue and fixed the problem,” Lexi says. “Then they trust us to provide aesthetic care. We’ve become a one-stop shop for them. I love that our patients trust us enough to voice their concerns.”

It’s amazing the number of corn mazes you can tour these days. They range from easy to very difficult. Gather a group of friends and stop at a corn maze. Make sure to dress in long-sleeved shirts and pants to protect

yourself from the corn stalks in the maze. Plan to tour the maze in teams of twos and see who’s the first one to make it through the maze. Award the winning team a prize.

them up from your local coffee shop. You can also make adult drinks, like a boozy cider, mulled wine or an old fashioned.

It’s time for warm fall drinks like apple cider, hot chocolate (add some peppermint for extra deliciousness), and pumpkin spiced lattes. Make these drinks at home or pick

1. CELEBRATE WITH A FALL- INSPIRED DRINK

Grab a basket and visit the local apple orchard. Pick your favorite variety of apples and stop at the apple store for caramel apples, cider, donuts and all sorts of apple goodies. When you get home, look up recipes for apple desserts, like bars, cobblers, crisps, dumplings, pies and tarts. I always like to make a big batch of homemade apple butter and apple sauce.

t’s the time for soft flannels, cozy cardigans, pumpkin-spiced lattes, getting lost in corn mazes and watching football games. I love being bundled up in a new coat and scarf, the crunch of leaves beneath my boots and sitting outside at a bonfire on those chilly, moonlit nights. I can’t resist going on a hayride with family with a cup of warm cider in hand. You know what that means? It’s fall. It’s time to embrace the change of seasons. Here are 12 must-do ideas to complete your fall bucket list.

It’s time to hit the pumpkin patch. Go on a hayride to the field and select a few pumpkins to decorate your home and to carve jack-o-lanterns. Stop at the store and buy mini pumpkins, gourds, and the very important slice of pumpkin pie to go. Even better, pick up a whole pie to share.

3. VISIT A CORN MAZE

5. DECORATE THE OUTSIDE OF YOUR HOUSE

Make the outside of the door and front of your home festive with a fall wreath, mums, hay bales, and other autumn décor. My neighborhood holds a “who decorated

It’s the time for butternut squash, chicken tortilla, chili and all of the mouthwatering soups and stews you can imagine. Serve them with hot, buttered rolls or cornbread. I have a friend who hosts a

8. BUY A NEW COAT

11. POSE FOR A FAMILY PHOTO

There’s nothing more fun than a neighborhood block party with friends and family. Celebrate the new season with a crackling bonfire and hot dogs with

Check your closet and look at your coats. If you need a coat, now’s the time to buy one before the cold weather arrives. Bundle up with your coat and scarf and take a walk in the crisp, cool, autumn weather. If you don’t need a new coat, you can always buy one for someone else or donate one.

9. WATCH A FOOTBALL GAME

Some of my most cherished fall memories are going to the drive-in theater with my friends and family. Gather a group of friends and family in the comfiest car and settle in for an evening of tasty food and fun films. If there is a not a drive-in theater nearby, rent or borrow a projector and watch a movie outdoors. Make it extra special by serving buttery popcorn, caramel corn and a selection of retro candy (or the candy you ate as a child).

their door best” contest every year. I’ve never won, but I’ve got my fingers crossed for this year.

It’s a thrill to watch the change of seasons. Stop by your favorite city or state park when the fall foliage is at its peak and take in the beauty. It’s a joy to look at the different hues of brown, orange, red and yellow leaves. Don’t forget your camera.

chili party every fall with crockpots of different kinds of chili and a bar with all the chili toppings.

It’s the perfect time to take a new family photo. Whether you hire a professional photographer or take the photo yourself, celebrate a new season with a new photo. Smile!

10. TAKE A DAY TRIP TO LOOK AT THE LEAVES (LEAF PEEPING)

It doesn’t matter if it’s a high school, college, or professional football game, they are all fun. Wear your favorite team’s jersey and cheer them on. If you can’t attend in person, watch a game at home with all of the fun treats like subs, nachos, potato skins, wings and more.
