Johnson Memorial Health ( JMH) is a nationally recognized network of physicians and health-care resources that recently became even more robust since joining the Mayo Clinic Care Network, a select group of independent health-care providers. Each is carefully vetted by Mayo Clinic and granted special access to Mayo’s clinical, educational, research and operational knowledge, expertise and resources.

The Mayo Clinic Care Network is not a merger, acquisition or consolidation of hospitals or health-care providers.

Rather, it is a collaboration between Mayo Clinic and network members, and it’s a partnership that enables patients to get a second opinion without having to leave Johnson County. Every case is, of course, different. In some instances, patients are in search of a second opinion. In other cases, they are looking for alternative treatment options.

They may find that the best approach is to be assessed at Mayo, particularly if the case is complicated or multidisciplinary. If a person’s illness is affecting several body systems, it may be best to be evaluated at Mayo Clinic. Sometimes in life, it’s about just having someone in your corner, and that’s precisely why Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana (BBBSCI) exists. Big Brothers

Association and Big Sisters International were founded more than 100 years ago, pairing volunteers with children to help children grow their sense of self-worth and reach their potential. The two entities joined forces in 1977 to become Big Brothers

Big Sisters of America. Through the years, countless relationships have been formed that have changed the lives of all involved.

The value of the program is evident by the statistics. Data shows that 95% of the kids

going through the BBBS program have improved or maintained their attitudes towards risky behavior, 94% have improved or maintained their views around social acceptance, and 92% have improved or maintained their grades. The stats don’t tell the full story, however - the stories themselves do.

Charles Stringer is the volunteer outreach and engagement coordinator with BBBSCI. One of the most frequent pieces of feedback he hears from “Bigs” is that they initially volunteered simply to give back to their community. They were shocked to find, however, that what they gained was equal to what they had given their “Little.” For instance, while Little Brother Tristan says that spending time with his Big, Alex, has made him more social and less shy, Big Brother Alex says hanging with Tristan makes him feel younger.

“I get to geek out about ‘Star Wars’ and Pokémon with someone now,” he says.

A Little named Rogan appreciates the one-on-one aspect of hanging out with someone who shares similar interests, and his Big, Rob, has been pleasantly surprised that the Little he mentors is now serving as a mentor to Rob’s own children.

“My kids look up to Rogan, which wasn’t something I expected,” Rob says. “They’re always excited when he comes around.”

Kids aged 8 to 14 are matched with an adult mentor. They do things one-on-one in the community. The activities Bigs and Littles engage in is totally up to them. Sometimes they chill at a park or go to a movie. Perhaps

“I know of a match where the Big and Little go out for ice cream,” Stringer says. “That may seem like a small thing, but it’s a space and time the two have reserved to have conversations. That consistent interaction has been transformative for both of them.”

Matt Vukusich, mentoring relationship specialist for BBBSCI, introduces the Big and Little to each other, periodically checks in with the pair, gauges for resources and coaches them along the path of building a

relationship. What each Little wants to get out of the program can be very different.

When the matches first meet, they set goals together with their Mentoring Relationship Specialist and the family. Some are academically focused while others are more interested in just having fun.

Vukusich established a match that started when the Little was a freshman in high school.

“Those matches sometimes are a bit tougher because it can be hard to win over a teenager,” Vukusich says. The boy was into

dirt bikes, however, so BBBSCI paired him with a Big who also owned a dirt bike. The two met at a park in Greenwood and the bike connection immediately won over the Little.

“They have been great from the get-go,” Vukusich says. “They ride dirt bikes on the Big’s property.”

These regular interactions instill confidence in the Little and help them feel accepted so that they can be their honest, authentic self.

“I just want the community to know that we have a lot of kids waiting for mentors in Central Indiana and across the board,” Stringer says. “I hope to get people energized and involved to be part of changing that.”

Right now, BBBBSCI is focusing on recruiting male mentors in their campaign, Men to Mentors: 75 Male Mentors in 75 Days. Stringer recalls the time a Little was being bullied in middle school. Prior to being matched, he handled it the way many kids might - by lashing out in anger.

That reaction ended up exacerbating the problem. After getting paired with a Big who offered advice on how best to respond, the boy showed his bullies that their words, while hurtful, weren’t going to elicit the same reaction going forward.

“Basically, he quit the cycle of the reactions that were continuing to fuel this feud,” Stringer says. “As a result, the frequency of the bullying decreased, and the Little began performing better in school.”

Volunteerism dropped during the pandemic. At the same time, however, BBBSCI saw a large increase in the number of kids requesting mentors.

“It was a challenging time, and I don’t begrudge anyone, but the pandemic cut our volunteer inquiry numbers in half, so now we’re working our way back from there,” Stringer says. BBBSCI asks for a one-year commitment from their volunteers and families, including between four and six hours per month.

“Given that the average American adult spends four hours a day on their phone, we are essentially asking for that same amount of time but spread over a month,” Stringer says.

While the number of Johnson County kids who are awaiting a mentor match is smaller than in Marion County, the duration of time that the kids wait is significantly longer. In TownePost.com / OCTOBER 2022 / CENTER GROVE MAGAZINE / 13

Lexi Yoo, a double-board-certified nurse practitioner, opened Yoo Direct Health in 2018 in Noblesville, specializing in finding root causes for her patients’ illnesses. The practice offers customized care for each patient in the areas of wellness, functional, anti-aging and aesthetic medicine.

Shaffer started training with Lexi through a residency mentorship program offered

by Yoo Direct Health in January. She says Shaffer was about halfway through the integrative provider program when she told Shaffer she should consider opening her own practice. Shaffer didn’t want to own a business, but felt she could offer exceptional care to patients on the south side through a second Yoo Direct Health location.

Now, Lexi and her team are opening a secondary location at 107 North State Road 135, Suite 101 in Center Grove in October. Nurse Practitioner Jessica Shaffer is the primary provider at the Center Grove location. She started her foray into functional medicine about three years ago when she learned how to implement integrative medicine into local addictions medicine.

“I started my nursing career in the emergency room, and I was seeing a lot of problems in patients where only the symptoms were being treated,” Shaffer says.

“I was interested in finding out the root cause of the problem instead of just giving

The area of functional medicine can be overwhelming because there is so much to learn, but Lexi made it easy to learn.”

The location offers care in the areas of medical weight management, peptide

therapy, gut health, hormone optimization, thyroid and adrenal care, and aesthetics.

Yoo Direct Health educates patients, helps to create a better foundation with nutrition and lifestyle changes, and provides a care plan that could include bioidentical hormone optimization, peptides and nutraceuticals.

Lexi and her staff must stay up to date on the latest continuing education to provide patients with the best possible outcomes.

Director of Operations Min Yoo says the patient is at the center of everything the practice offers.

“Even though Jess has completed the residency mentorship program, she’s going to continue to learn,” Lexi says. “This allows our practice to get better at what we do and, in turn, better serve our patients by providing the absolute best outcomes.”

Patients often come in with complaints of not feeling their best, tiredness, inability to sustain or lose weight, or being frustrated by not being listened to by another provider.

“When a patient comes in, we listen first and foremost,” Lexi says. “We listen to how they’re feeling and then we complete a blood panel. We then review the blood panel and initiate a plan from there.”

Science degree in nursing from the Indiana University School of Nursing in 2009. She graduated from the University of Indianapolis in 2018 with a Master of Science degree in nursing. Shaffer is certified as a BioTe provider, specializing in bioidentical hormone replacement therapy for both men and women. She continues her coursework through the Institute for Functional Medicine and the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine.

Yoo Direct Health also offers nutritional counseling for patients. Many find relief through eliminating certain trigger foods like gluten and dairy. Lexi says removing certain foods from a patient’s diet often leads to less inflammation in the body.

Min says the goal of the Greenwood location will be the same as the Noblesville location. He says the staff is the greatest asset at Yoo Direct Health. They will continue to invest in education to provide high-level results for each patient.

Many patients arrive at Yoo Direct Health wanting assistance in losing weight. Lexi says the practice offers a well-rounded approach to weight loss, including nutritional counseling, peptide therapy and integrative testing.

“This helps the patient achieve sustainable weight loss for the long term,” Lexi says.

“We find the root causes of why a patient can’t lose weight and we work to treat those reasons, rather than taking a Band-Aid approach to the problem.”

The secondary location offers aesthetic services such as injectables like Botox, dermal fillers, and hair restoration. Lexi says many patients might start by coming in for a health-related issue, and then realize they can also receive aesthetic treatment.

“Our patients trust us because we’ve taken a well-rounded approach to their medical issue and fixed the problem,” Lexi says.

“Then they trust us to provide aesthetic care. We’ve become a one-stop shop for them. I love that our patients trust us enough to voice their concerns.”

Shaffer is a Center Grove resident and is excited to provide the type of care she saw lacking on the south side.

“In discussing what I was doing with Lexi with family and friends, I kept hearing them say they wished there was something like that on the south side,” Shaffer says. “The Center Grove area is growing rapidly. I’m so excited to be able to provide functional wellness to local residents.”

Ake comes from a long line of relatives who dedicated their lives to helping others. Her great-grandfather, Elwood P. Qualls, established the Evangelistic Center on Shelby Street in Indianapolis, which became the first documented nursing home in Indiana. The center had a school, clinic and worship facility, and was all about community leadership.

Her father passed away when Ake was 5, presenting the opportunity to travel with her song-evangelist grandparents every summer, attending church camps across the country.

“You don’t know what your circumstances will be,” Ake says. “Because of my beliefs, I never feared life. Having an abundance mindset equipped me to focus on everything that was good in my life.”

“The John Maxwell team contacted me and asked if I had ever thought about adding a personal development leadership certification to my resume,” she says. “In 2016 I joined the team and attended a John Maxwell event, Live2Lead in Atlanta. I met Simon Sinek, the author of “Start With Why,” and shared with him what I was doing. I put my programming together as a corporate sales trainer, using material from his YouTube channel. I knew joining the John Maxwell team was the right step for me.”

As she entered the corporate world, this ingrained mindset followed her into adulthood.

As Ake approached 50 years old, she reflected a lot about her grandparents and the impact they made throughout their lives. She wanted to make a bigger impact by helping others become better leaders.

“I never came into a work environment with expectations,” Ake says. “I believed that I was there to learn. It was a mindset of appreciation and gratitude for the opportunity. Practicing humility is never about having an ego. Humility is about serving and that was most important to me. It led me to do some amazing things in my career.”

“In January 2018 I started a podcast,” she says. “I wanted to interview people and understand how they see themselves, what they are doing to make an impact and how they influence other people. I named it ‘Everyday Leaders,’ and since my birthday is in the second week of January, I kicked it off on my birthday - 50 shows in 50 weeks.”

With a background in journalism and experience in fundraising and sales, Ake excelled in sales and sales training, as well as people development positions teaching sales reps how to succeed. She regularly traveled to Europe to teach strategy

By 2019 Ake co-authored her first book, “Mentoring Moments,” and is now a fourtime bestselling co-author.

Her next book, “Everyday Moments,” will be released in 2022.

high schools, women’s luncheons, corporate events, and at the Wright Brothers Institute, training the U.S. Air Force. She leads virtual and in-person leadership workshops and programs, throughout Indiana and beyond.

“It starts with leadership,” Ake says. “I create things that don’t exist. I didn’t research how to do a podcast. I didn’t ask how everyone is else doing it.

I didn’t care. I knew what I wanted to do. It was important to me and that’s what I help others create.”

At the core, Ake’s goal is to create growth that results in better leaders who can serve

each other with more impact in our community.

Since 2015 Jill Griffith, AAMS®, CDFA®, a financial advisor with McAdams & Griffith Investment Management of Raymond James, has been working to assist individuals and families with their financial needs including investments, planning for college, retirement and more.

However, one issue Griffith saw time and time again prompted her to dig a little deeper.

“I found myself working with women through various transitions in their lives, from newly widowed to getting married, retirement and, of course, divorce,” Griffith says. “Divorce can be debilitating for people and I thought I could improve upon my skills in that area to help people more.”

As a divorced mom with one son, Griffith understands the challenges that come with divorce, and the financial implications. She decided to pursue the Certified Divorce Financial Analyst® designation and completed the additional education in July of 2022.

“There are a lot of intricacies with divorce,” she says. “Oftentimes people assume you just divide assets in half and it’s equal, but some assets produce income or continue to grow, so equal is not necessarily equitable. I work with attorneys, CPAs and other professionals as a team to outline a fair settlement that will help protect the client’s interests.”

Whether a couple is contemplating divorce, has already filed or is newly divorced, Griffith says she can come in at any point in the process and add value - but the earlier the better.

“The biggest thing is to help determine the short and long-term financial impact, not only now but down the road too,” Griffith says. “I analyze tax implications and potential penalties of various decisions, review property valuations, help identify hidden or unreported assets, determine the present value of pension

and retirement plans, and more.”

Specific situations vary, including women who have stayed home to raise children, or a couple who has been married for many years and in retirement, and chooses to divorce. Some couples have few assets and others have a huge portfolio.

Griffith says she has seen both sides of the coin in 2022 - widows who have never been involved in their marital finances, and also, in younger generations, women who have been the primary financial person in their marriage, leaving the spouse in the dark about overall finances.

“My advice to any person is that you should know what assets and debts you have and where they are,” Griffith says.

“Everyone should take an active role in those conversations about money.”

Griffith can help in many situations, to ensure clients are setting themselves and their families up for the best possible future.

“I think more and more people are looking for specialized professionals to help navigate changes in their lives, and we’re moving in a holistic direction,” Griffith says. “It’s no longer getting a divorce attorney and getting it done. t’s the time for soft flannels, cozy cardigans, pumpkin-spiced lattes, getting lost in corn mazes and watching football games. I love being bundled up in a new coat and scarf, the crunch of leaves beneath my boots and sitting outside at a bonfire on those chilly, moonlit nights. I can’t resist going on a hayride with family with a cup of warm cider in hand. You know what that means?

It’s fall. It’s time to embrace the change of seasons. Here are 12 must-do ideas to complete your fall bucket list.

Gather a group of friends and family in the comfiest car and settle in for an evening of tasty food and fun films. If there is a not a drive-in theater nearby, rent or borrow a projector and watch a movie outdoors. Make it extra special by serving buttery popcorn, caramel corn and a selection of retro candy (or the candy you ate as a child).
