CENTER GROVE MAGAZINE HAS A NEW PUBLISHER It’s been an exciting spring thus far at the Center Grove Magazine.

As many of you may know, we hosted our “Spirit of ‘76” West Grove Elementary reunion at Southland Community Church in early April. It was great to catch up with several of my childhood friends and neighbors, including long-time principal George Broyer.

Perhaps the biggest news in our world is the announcement of a new publisher, Fredda Kovacs. She purchased the Center Grove Magazine franchise and is now the publisher. With over 15+ years of radio ad sales and marketing experience, Fredda has been through our training and hit the

ground running to capture the voice of Center Grove residents. Please join me in welcoming her as you already have.

This September, Fredda will be relaunching the Greenwood Magazine as well.

As for me, I’ll still be here at the Towne Post Network assisting Fredda and our other franchisees as needed. We are growing in other states now so that is taking more of my time these days. But I always look for an excuse to come down to have lunch with friends.

In late 2015 Billy and Todd Bemis, brothers and co-owners of Johnson County-based Bemis Group, a real estate, development and construction company, noticed a 1920s-era structure on East Wayne Street in downtown Franklin had been put up for sale. After some research and a few tours, the brothers promptly realized the building would provide the right mix of charm and square footage to launch an event space concept they’d been casually brainstorming about for nearly 15 years.

“For a long time we’d discussed the idea of an event center in Johnson County and we thought this building would be perfect, and such a good location for something like this,” Billy says. “We knew it could work there.”

Nearly two years of extensive renovations followed, and the Bemis brothers partnered with Kwang Casey, owner of Oaken Barrel Brewing Company in Greenwood, to help bring the concept to life.

Having been owned by Greenwood Moving and Storage for 15 years, the building was in need of extensive renovations for transformation into a full-service event facility, including all new windows, plumbing, heating and air, and electrical systems.

“Essentially we got it down to the bare bones and put it back together,” Billy says.

“We went through and made the entire building structurally sound - all the flooring and all the old existing window openings had been built in and made smaller over the years so we opened those up. We also tore down the entire west wall and rebuilt it up in brick to match the rest of the building.”

The result is a concept that provides a unique ambiance, with exposed brick and timber beams, in a historic space originally built as - you guessed it - a garment production facility where employees at one point made clothing for the U.S. military during World War II. The 30,000 total square feet of event space includes two main venues - the Province Room, which seats 250, and the secondlevel Franklin Room, which seats 500 - as well as the first-floor Garment Factory Lounge. Billy says the facility is able to accommodate all manner of gatherings including weddings, corporate functions, private parties and community events, and he and his co-owners hired classically trained Chef Richard Goss to oversee the facility’s kitchen, which offers full catering packages.

“On a larger scale we also want to do some indoor festivals,” Billy says. “Franklin does a wonderful job during the summer utilizing the courthouse and outside, but in the winter months it’s hard to put together festivals so we want to bring some of that because we can accommodate many people in that kind of setting.”

The Garment Factory Lounge, which seats approximately 100 guests, will be open to the public on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the month of May and will host a special Mother’s Day brunch with omelet and carving stations. Billy says the facility is already getting 2018 bookings for weddings and holiday parties.

“I think part of what makes this facility work as an event place is the structure itself, especially when you couple the timber beams and all the charm of a 1920s building with the unique fixtures, upgrades and finishings that we’ve put into the facility,” he says.

Billy adds that the sheer size of the facility, as well as its location downtown, bode well for attracting a diverse clientele.

“Our goal is to offer a lot of the amenities and the space for those that want to enjoy it and not be cramped,” he says. “We’re able to accommodate anything from a small birthday party to a large community event. And we’re

excited to be here with the downtown charm of Franklin and everything it has to offer, with other eateries and shops and restaurants.”

Greenwood’s oldest festival celebrates Independence Day in Craig Park starting with a community patriot parade at noon that kicks off an entire day of fun with music, food, shopping and fireworks. The Freedom Festival, which is always held on the last Saturday in June, is a popular community tradition that just keeps growing according to Robert Taggart, Executive Director of Greenwood Parks and Recreation. Despite the area’s construction, more than 50,000 people are expected to attend, and there is something for everyone with more than 200 food and retail booths alongside live music on two stages this year.

Preparations for the festival have been made around the construction as well as changes to the parade route to turn West on Main St and then South on Market Plaza to South on Madison Ave. “The parade and the Freedom Festival kind of flow together now, meaning that if you’re here for the parade, the parade route is structured in such a way that when it ends it allows people access to the festival after the parade,” says Taggart, who has been affiliated with the Freedom Festival for more than 10 years. “The current layout of Freedom Festival where you have all your merchant booths and then you have your food vendors, that amalgamated all together and has really only been the last 3-4 years that we have been doing that. Old Merchants had a festival before the Freedom Festival, the retail merchants set up in the old city park.

A few years back we decided to combine the two and it’s worked really well.”

The Kid Zone and Family Stage feature bounce houses, face painting, dance parties and magic shows from 1:00 to 9:00. There are plenty of food vendors on tap this year, too. atCenterGrove.com / JUNE 2018 / CENTER GROVE MAGAZINE / 11

“We’ve got a broad range of eclectic food vendors from elephant ears and barbecue and pulled pork to ice cream and funnel cakes,” Taggart says.

The retail booths are filled with local businesses and nonprofits that wrap around the diamonds, and they are open from 1:00 to 10:00 p.m.

At 6:00 the Freedom Jam winner will be announced, followed by a special ceremony Honoring our Heroes at 7:00.

The popular group,“Tastes Like Chicken,” will also perform at 8:30 on the Korn Country Stage.

Just before the night sky illuminates, at 10:00 p.m. Greenwood Mayor Mark Myers will help celebrate the American Spirit along with Greenwood High School’s performance of the National Anthem and the GFD Honor and Guard Taps and Flag Salute. Then, with all eyes towards the sky, the high point of the day begins as explosions of color fill the air.

The fireworks are presented by Korn Country 100.3, and Taggart says, “We partner with them and Korn does an absolutely fantastic job, it always goes really well.”

As a crowd favorite the pyrotechnic display is timed to music, which makes for a spectacular show that is sure to thrill all ages.

“It’s just a chance for friends, family and the community to get together and celebrate the Fourth of July and celebrate downtown as well,” Taggart says. “It’s held in the heart of downtown Greenwood, so it’s a really good setting and it’s a really good event. It’s a chance for the community to get out and take a break and enjoy the park, look at the great festival and how it’s all put together.”

A special feature that is being offered is a VIP ticket for $40.00 per person, which includes catering by Oaken Barrel in a private tent on the tennis courts with private restrooms. You can even enjoy the fireworks from an exclusive elevated spot for a fantastic festival experience.

After working as a sales rep in the optical industry for over a decade, Brandan Kyle decided it was time for a change of pace. Rather than seeking out another conventional job, he decided he would try starting his own food truck.

I asked a lot of questions from people who were already involved in the business, as far as permitting goes and things like that.”

Next up, he had to lock down a truck, but it couldn’t just be any old truck.

“One thing that I knew that I wanted to do was build a nicer truck than I had seen out on the road,” Kyle says. “When I looked at food trucks, I thought to myself, ‘The image could be improved upon.’ I wanted to come in with something that was state-of-the-art and really ramp up the image.”

After locking down the truck, it was time for Kyle to get the food situated.

From the start, he wanted to keep things simple and affordable, while also ensuring that his burger was of a higher quality than that of his competitors.

“I basically looked at the competition as far as Five Guys Burgers & Fries, Shake Shack and a lot of places like that with the more fast, casual environment,” Kyle says. “What I wanted to do was stay in that price range, and I wanted to build the best burger that I could without going above and beyond that price point. What I first set out to do was to find the highest quality beef that I could find.”

That’s probably an understatement in addition to its sixth straight state

championship, the boys team placed fifth at the high school national championships last season after being ranked first in the country for much of the year. The girls squad finished third at the Ohio state championship, which was the closest state tournament the team could compete in.

Phillips, a 2012 CGHS grad who took over head coaching duties after Eric Howe, a government and history teacher at the school, stepped down six years ago, says his 2017 season was the most successful yet of his tenure as boys coach.

all around the country and meet people from Seattle, California, Minnesota and Florida, and the community is very tight to where everybody knows everybody,” says Henderson, who plays as a handler for the team - a position similar to a football quarterback.

The team stays plenty busy in the offseason as well with weightlifting, practices three days per week in the fall, and winter participation in an interscholastic indoor league held at The Gathering Place in Greenwood. Players who wish to continue honing their skills through the summer months can participate in an optional summer league organized by the Indiana Ultimate Foundation.

“We encourage everybody who is interested to come try out regardless of how much they know about the rules, or what experience they have,” Phillips says.

“We’re all here to have fun.”

There are currently 12 registered high school ultimate frisbee teams in Indiana, and Phillips is hopeful that number will increase in coming years.

“The Midwest is kind of a little brother right now with trying to catch up with the coasts and grow the sport here, and we’re working really hard to do that,” Phillips says. “A lot of people don’t understand that it is a serious sport for those who want it to be. A lot of our kids play other varsity sports, and there are parallels “We’ve had a lot of close calls but we’ve held on to the state championship for a while,” he says. “Carmel and Fishers have challenged us in the past, and this year Brebeuf is great.”

The CGHS ultimate squad trains nearly year-round and the competitive season typically runs from March through May, consisting of weekend-long tournaments around the state and Midwest followed by the state, regional and national championships. The 2018 season will take the team to Ohio, Georgia and Illinois in addition to local tournaments.

All U.S. ultimate frisbee teams must be registered and approved for competition

by USA Ultimate, founded in 1979 as the national governing body for American high school, college, beach and club teams. Upon approval, teams are free to choose which regular-season tournaments they wish to compete in, prior to the post-season state, regional and national championships.

Phillips is proud of his six-year tenure and plans to continue motivating his players to retain their status as one of the premier programs in the state and country.

“We have a supportive school administration which is really helpful,” he says. “As a fringe sport, to get to use the weight rooms and have a field to practice is great. (CGHS strength and conditioning coach) Marty Mills is a really good motivator. We also have a history of alumni giving back and continuing to be a good influence on the kids, so they are surrounded by good players, which is great.”

Center Grove High School Names Top 20 Students of the Class of 2018 Center Grove High School has named the Top 20 Students in the Class of 2018. The students were honored with a banquet in the Center Grove High SchoolHall of Excellence on May 3, 2018. Each student invited one elementary or middle school teacher and one high school teacher who inspired them during their academic career. The students spoke about those teachers during the program.
