BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT IDO INCORPORATED

Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photographer / Krystal Dailey

Some of the most successful businesses began in the basement of a visionary’s house, such is the case for IDO Incorporated, an interior design organization dedicated to helping people thrive. Launched in 1992 by Jill Mendoza, the business was born to serve clients’ commercial interior design needs. Mendoza did a beautiful job, and through the years IDO has grown in both staff and client services, completed award-winning projects and relocated to the heart of downtown. When Amanda Medlen joined the team in 2003, IDO employed seven staff members — today they have 19 employees, including Lee Boyland who came aboard in 2008. In 2017, Mendoza began sharing her thoughts about succession planning with Medlen and Boyland, who took ownership of the company in October 2023 when Mendoza retired. Now Medlen is Principal/ CEO, Boyland is Principal/COO, and Jennifer Knotts, who joined IDO in 2022, is CFO. Together the three make up the Executive Leadership Team. Having these three impressive women working together has created synergy that has not only helped the business grow but thrive. “We are working to diversify our portfolio of clients and distribute our work more evenly through our core sectors,” Medlen says. IDO’s four pillars are health care and life science, higher education, municipality and government, and corporate office. Their services include Interior Design that fulfills an organization’s vision, Workplace Planning that optimizes human interaction, Sustainable Design that makes a positive impact, Lab Solutions that help advance Life Sciences, and Specialized Move Management that maximizes productivity. 10 | January 2026 | TownePost.com

IDO has designed for clients such as Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital, City of Indianapolis – Community Justice Center, Eli Lilly & Company, Westville Correctional Facility, Ivy Tech Community College, Indiana University, and YMCA of Greater Indianapolis to name a few.

their team of designers where they go around the room, discuss projects they are working on, and assess their current workload. This is key not only to ensure meeting deadlines but also to support a healthy work-life balance.

When an IDO team member meets with a client, it’s an ongoing collaborative process to ensure they meet the client’s needs.

“If someone says they’re on fire, immediately someone at the table will ask what they can take on,” Knotts says.

“Once we gather info, we’ll do field verification and work on space plan options, then sit down for a working session with the client in which sometimes adjust things as they talk,” Boyland says.

Medlen says that IDO’s commitment to preserving a healthy work-life balance has played a big part in her never leaving the company. Through the years she has turned down other job offers because she cherishes the personal connections she has built at IDO.

It’s an integral process in which they are simultaneously working with the client and other disciplines like architecture and engineering to come up with an integrated solution. IDO’s team holds weekly meetings with

understand how we’re doing.”

To engage the company’s younger generation, they created something called the “social committee.” This year the social committee chose to do a field day, and their marketing manager asked some reps if they wanted to sponsor it.

IDO is committed to giving back to the community. For instance, they are advocates for Purposeful Design, an organization that takes men who have faced trouble in the past and teaches them the art of metalworking and woodworking to get them back on their feet. IDO also gives their team members eight hours of paid volunteer leave each year to do with what they wish. They can choose to volunteer at a nonprofit, a church, their child’s school, or whatever speaks to their heart.

“Not only did reps cover the cost of drinks and snacks, but they also participated in field day with us and have asked if they can do so again next year,” Knotts says. IDO also participates in Spirit Weeks to build company culture. “Our culture is probably the best thing we have, and anybody that knows us would tell you that,” Knotts says.

In addition, IDO volunteers with the downtown Indy Boys & Girls Club and “All our favorite memories surround our participates in the Women Build with company culture,” Medlen adds. According to Knotts, they expect IDO to continue to grow considerably over the next 15 years. “The projections are coming in,” Knotts says. “We are a thriving company, and we’re excited for the future!” IDO Incorporated is located at 601 North Capitol Avenue in Indianapolis. TIMELESS RETREAT

PRESERVING HISTORY AT THE STORY INN Writer / Renée Larr

Just beyond the rolling hills of Brown County lies one of the Midwest’s most charming hidden getaways: the Story Inn. Located about 20 minutes from Nashville, the property is a fully preserved National Historic District, offering visitors a rare opportunity to step back into the 19th century. It’s rustic, romantic and proudly “one inconvenient location since 1851,” a slogan as quirky and beloved as the inn itself.

Today, the Story Inn is led by proprietor Richard Hofstetter, who carries forward a legacy begun by his father, a lawyer with an unexpected passion for historic preservation. In the late 1990s, Hofstetter’s father purchased the entire town of Story at a sheriff ’s sale, an impulsive moment that shaped the destination guests know today. He went on to secure its placement on the National Register of Historic Places and fought significant legal battles to bring utilities to the property. When he passed away, Richard took the reins. Rather than feeling confined by his father’s legacy, Hofstetter views his role simply. “I’m a custodian,” he says. “I’ll take care of the place until somebody else wants it back.”

His commitment to preservation is evident everywhere, from the restoration of historic cottages to the return of original family names to each building. Many of the cottages now bear the surnames of the earliest residents, a meaningful gesture that has helped reconnect present-day descendants with their heritage. “Some people have deeper roots here than I do,” Hofstetter says. “I don’t want to violate someone else’s family history.” Beyond history, what makes the Story Inn truly remarkable is its rare structure: The business owns the entire unincorporated town. That creates an unusual cohesion between departments. Culinary staff help with winter maintenance, the maintenance team assists with dishes, and employees float seamlessly between TownePost.com | January 2026 | 13

roles. This symbiotic model allows the inn and its award-winning restaurant to operate sustainably, even in a challenging rural location. Guests come for many reasons, from quiet getaways to candlelit dinners, weddings and photography sessions, and nearly all of them return, Hofstetter says. The Story Inn boasts one of the highest repeatvisit rates in Brown County, something Hofstetter attributes to offering a great value at a fair price and creating an experience guests can’t replicate elsewhere. Overnight packages simplify stays: For a flat rate, guests enjoy lodging, a fine-dining meal and a truly unplugged retreat. Wi-fi is available, but its sparsity is part of the charm. “People come here for disconnection,” he says. “It’s a slower pace. When you’re not distracted, you can reset.” The inn is also known for its inventive

events, from comedy shows and wine fairs to murder-mystery dinners, one of its most popular offerings. Staff are encouraged to dream up new ideas, and if something works, they refine it. If not, they try something else. Natural beauty also sets the Story Inn apart. Photographers regularly travel two hours or more to capture its diverse backdrops — gardens, wooded trails, rustic barns and the iconic blue-andyellow cottages. “We have what other people don’t,” Hofstetter says. “The grounds are just beautiful.” Whether you’re seeking a romantic weekend, a culinary escape or a nostalgic brush with Indiana’s past, the Story Inn offers a destination that feels both timeless and refreshingly simple. NEW YEAR, NEW YOU

ELEVATE HEALTH, A PREMIER INTEGRATIVE WELLNESS CLINIC, HELPS PATIENTS FEEL INFINITELY BETTER Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photographer / Sarah Mulinaro Photography

M

yla Ramsey was 37 years old and had just given birth to her fourth baby when she began noticing that she didn’t feel like herself. She suffered from significant joint pain in her fingers, elbows and wrists. She knew she had Hashimoto’s, an autoimmune disorder affecting the thyroid gland, so she saw her endocrinologist to ask him to check her thyroid. After being dismissed three times over by her endocrinologist, primary care doctor, and OBGYN, Ramsey reached out to her friend Jess Shaffer, who had been practicing integrative medicine. She explained how despite being told repeatedly that she was “normal,” she felt terrible. Shaffer and her husband, Jordan, currently own Elevate Health, Center Grove’s premier integrative wellness clinic on Indy’s south side. Shaffer did a deep dive into Ramsey’s labs and found she was not only prediabetic, but she also had testosterone levels consistent with menopause and was not treating the autoimmune component of her hypothyroidism. Without proper levels of testosterone women suffer physical, metabolic, cognitive, emotional, sexual, nervous system, and sleep symptoms. Ramsey was so exhausted she was barely able to function. “I’d sit on the couch and wonder how I was going to muster the energy to do a load of laundry,” Ramsey says. 16 | January 2026 | TownePost.com

“WE WANT TO GIVE OUR PATIENTS QUALITY OF LIFE IN THE YEARS WE’RE EXTENDING BECAUSE WHAT’S THE PURPOSE OF LIVING TO 100 IF YOU FEEL BAD THE LAST 40 YEARS OF YOUR LIFE?” - JESS SHAFFER Shaffer started Ramsey on testosterone and GLP-1, a hormone that plays a crucial role in regulating blood sugar levels and appetite. Shaffer stresses that preventative medicine is important in averting morbid obesity. Unfortunately, society often stigmatizes obesity medicine.

Shaffer at Elevate Health.

“That’s unfair because we don’t think twice about someone taking blood pressure or cholesterol meds,” Shaffer says. “Recent guidelines changes now advise obesity drugs such as the GLP-1 peptides, should be considered first-line treatment options for eligible patients.”

In recent months, the FDA has removed black box warning labels for hormone replacement therapy (HRT) in reference to cardiovascular, breast cancer, and dementia risk for HRT.

In addition to taking testosterone and GLP-1, Ramsey began weight training and improved therapies for her autoimmune disorder. Two weeks after interventions, Ramsey’s joint pain had vanished. “I felt like a lightbulb came back on for me,” says Ramsey, who initially lost an average of five pounds a month. Ultimately, she shed 98 pounds over a two-year period and has maintained her weight ever since by following the lifestyle and advice Shaffer offered. Ramsey, who had worked for seven years with Shaffer at a hospital ER, was so pleased with her health transformation that she was inspired to become a nurse practitioner so that she could help others navigate this path she has walked. Now she works alongside

“I think it’s wonderful that we’re working here together, considering that Myla was one of my first patients when I started in this integrative wellness world,” Shaffer says. “She’s such an amazing success story.”

“It’s been a disservice to women in the last two decades with this black box warning that made them fear hormones,” Shaffer says. “Hopefully we’ll continue to educate the masses that hormone therapy is safe when done appropriately and monitored and managed well.” One of Shaffer’s patients was battling pain during intercourse at age 60. She assumed she was too far into menopause for HRT to help. Shaffer weighed the risks versus benefits, applied evidence-based education, and ultimately started her on HRT. That patient’s pain has since resolved. “I cannot believe I waited this long to start estrogen,” she says. “I feel amazing.” Any woman or man (40% of their patients are male) who is interested in feeling better

physically, cognitively, and emotionally is invited to schedule an appointment at Elevate Health where they will check hormone levels as well as explore different avenues of health that will lead to improvement. In addition to managing hormone changes and weight struggles, at Elevate Health they also focus on utilizing other modalities such as Regenerative Medicine, Peptides, Joint Injections, Microneedling, and Shockwave Therapy for pain management, recovery, and anti-aging. When Nicole Coffey’s daughter, Hadley, was suffering with knee pain, she consulted an ortho specialist, who told her that she would need to sit out the basketball season. Coffey then sought a second opinion from Shaffer. With a diagnosis of tendinitis and OsgoodSchlatter, Shaffer recommended Shockwave Therapy. “Hadley was in tears after basketball practices and track meets, but after two sessions with Jess, the pain was almost completely diminished,” says Coffey, noting that not only did her daughter not miss the season, but she also never missed a practice. Mackenzie Pierce, who plays varsity basketball at Center Grove, came into Elevate Health unable to move well after a double basketball practice. After one session of Shockwave Therapy, she felt instant relief. TownePost.com | January 2026 | 17

“I felt lighter and was able to move fully again. A lot of my tightness and pain went away as well,” says Pierce, who was back to practice the following day, pain free, and with a considerably improved range of motion. In order to garner positive results, it’s key to find a provider who’s willing to take a multifaceted approach to your health. Shaffer and her staff spend a lot of time with their patients to create specialized, individualized care plans. Plus, every appointment is 30-60 minutes. This is why they charge an annual membership fee ($250 for a single person; a spouse can be added for $120). “We look at all the different angles of

your health, which can take an exorbitant amount of time,” Shaffer adds. “You’re not going to get that level of care from the traditional model because they have an insurance governing body that dictates they must see X number of patients per hour. Fortunately for us, we aren’t bound by the constraints of insurance models, so we can spend that extra time with each patient.” However, they do offer an entire a la carte service line that is not subject to the membership fee. These include Microneedling, Joint Injections, Shockwave Therapy, and all the aesthetics, including hair regeneration and scar therapy.

Shaffer and her team are dedicated to helping their patients maximize their health span, not their lifespan. “We want to give our patients quality of life in the years we’re extending because what’s the purpose of living to 100 if you feel bad the last 40 years of your life?” Shaffer says. Mention this article and save 20% off any a la carte service booked in the month of January. Located at 313 Western Blvd., Suite F in Greenwood, Elevate Health offers 50% off for student athletes who get shockwave services. A PLACE TO HEAL JOHNSON MEMORIAL HEALTH TO OPEN NEW BEHAVIORAL HEALTH CENTER Writer / Christina Cochran Photographer / Lesle Lane/Studio 13

W

hen Dr. David Dunkle walks through the new Behavioral Health Center on the Johnson Memorial Health ( JMH) campus, he sees far more than a modern addition to the hospital’s west wing. He sees hope. He sees years of community collaboration realized in the form of 29 inpatient beds and a compassionate care model designed to meet one of Johnson County’s most urgent needs — accessible, local mental health treatment. “This project represents our community at its best,” Dr. Dunkle, JMH’s president and CEO, says. “It’s the result of leaders across the county coming together — commissioners, council members, law enforcement, the health department and others — to address a growing problem. We knew we didn’t have enough inpatient behavioral health beds, and that too many of our residents were being sent to facilities hours away. Now, we can offer that care right here at home.”

20 | January 2026 | TownePost.com

A Community Responds to a Growing Crisis In recent years, behavioral health challenges have become increasingly prevalent across the nation and close to home. Johnson County, like so many communities, faced a shortage of inpatient beds for residents in crisis. Many found themselves waiting in emergency departments for placement or being transported to facilities as far away as Terre Haute. Others ended up in the county jail — an outcome no one wanted but often deemed the safest temporary solution. Recognizing the urgency, a coalition of local stakeholders began meeting over two years ago to discuss the crisis and identify solutions. Their conversations laid the foundation for what would become the JMH Behavioral Health Center. The project ultimately came to fruition with support from the Johnson County Commissioners and County Council, who appropriated American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds to construct the new facility.

“It’s an amazing example of what can happen when local government and healthcare organizations work together,” Dunkle says. “This was a true partnership built on the shared goal of helping residents in need.”

Healing the Whole Person The Behavioral Health Center marks a major step forward for JMH in its mission to provide quality healthcare services for the whole person — body and mind. “Behavioral health is of equal importance to physical health,” Dunkle explains. “For years, we’ve been recognized for highquality, safe medical care. Now, we’re extending that same level of excellence and compassion to behavioral health. We want every patient who walks through our doors to feel supported, respected and understood.” The center’s creation aligns with a philosophy that health care should treat the entire human experience.

“This new unit allows us to integrate total body healing,” Dunkle says. “No longer are we limited to treating acute physical problems. Now we can treat acute behavioral health issues as well.” The 29-bed inpatient unit represents the latest milestone in a decade-long journey. Dunkle recalls that more than a decade ago, the hospital foundation identified behavioral health access as the community’s greatest unmet health care need. That insight spurred years of effort — beginning with the establishment of the annual JMH Foundation Gala, which raised funds for behavioral health initiatives. The hospital then hired a community health navigator to help connect patients to available services and expanded access to behavioral health therapy. The new inpatient unit, Dunkle says, is “simply amazing to see come to life.” “But our work isn’t done,” he adds. “There will always be people in need, and we are committed to helping as many as we can — now and in the future.”

The Patient Comes First For Dr. Heidi Monroe, DBH, the newly appointed program director of the JMH Behavioral Health Center, the vision is clear: every patient deserves compassion, dignity and individualized care. “Just like Johnson Memorial Hospital, the Behavioral Health Unit is a patient-first unit,” Monroe says. “Our goal is to help each person heal through their mental health journey. Every individual in crisis deserves compassionate and caring treatment focused on enhancing their life and easing the pain brought on by acute mental health challenges.” Patients admitted to the unit will receive between 30 and 35 hours of structured care each week. The program combines evidence-based therapeutic practices with holistic wellness activities designed to promote long-term balance and stability. Treatment includes processing and educational groups, medication management and creative and recreational therapies such as art, mindfulness, yoga and self-care workshops.

“We provide daily medication management and follow-up to ensure each patient’s regimen is right for them,” Monroe explains. “Our goal is not just to stabilize, but to empower — to help patients find tools that support ongoing wellness and reduce the likelihood of future crises.”

A Partnership for Healing A key feature of the Behavioral Health Center’s approach is collaboration — both within JMH and throughout the wider network of community care. “Collaboration with other departments is key,” Monroe says. “Patients in crisis often have other unmet medical needs. By working closely with our colleagues throughout JMH, we can meet the patient where they are — addressing their physical, emotional and psychological needs together. That’s how we help patients return to their lives stronger and more functional than before.” This integrated care model also extends to discharge planning. Upon admission, patients participate in designing their TownePost.com | January 2026 | 21

The goal is to remove the sense of confinement or clinical coldness that some associate with inpatient behavioral units. “Our patients deserve a space that feels dignified,” Monroe adds. “Healing is not just medical — it’s emotional and environmental too.”

Redefining the Conversation Around Mental Health Both Dunkle and Monroe emphasize that the new center is not just a facility — it’s a statement of values. It signals to the community that mental health is deserving of the same investment, attention and compassion as any physical ailment.

personalized treatment plans, including goals for after their hospital stay. The Behavioral Health team works directly with community agencies to arrange follow-up appointments and ensure each patient leaves with a network of ongoing support. “We start planning for discharge from the moment a patient arrives,” Monroe says. “That collaborative process helps bridge the gap between hospital care and home life. It’s about giving patients the tools and support they need to continue healing safely in their own environments.”

Designed for Calm and Comfort Step inside the Behavioral Health Center, and it’s clear that the design itself is part of the therapy. Natural light fills the hallways and community spaces. The color palette is soft and serene, evoking peace rather than sterility. Artwork depicting tranquil natural scenes lines the walls, encouraging mindfulness and reflection. “The design and environment were curated specifically to be healing,” Monroe says. “We wanted a space that feels calm and safe — a place where patients can breathe. Every detail, from the light to the artwork, was chosen to promote comfort and peace of mind.” 22 | January 2026 | TownePost.com

“The more we talk about behavioral health — the more we build the buildings and create the programming — the more we help people understand that mental health issues are extremely prevalent,” Dunkle says. “No one should feel ashamed or guilty for experiencing a behavioral health crisis.” Monroe echoes that sentiment, noting that one of the center’s goals is to challenge misconceptions about mental illness and the people who experience it. “Unfortunately, stigma still exists,” she says. “But every one of us may face a mental health challenge at some point in our lives. By opening this unit, we’re not only treating people — we’re helping the community learn, understand and respond with compassion.” That education has already begun. The JMH Behavioral Health team is partnering with local organizations — including EMS and fire departments — to provide training and resources around emotional trauma and crisis response. “We want to be a resource for the entire community,” Monroe says. “Healing doesn’t end at our doors.” Measuring Success Through Lives Changed When asked how success will be measured, Dunkle’s answer is simple: by the lives touched.

“Success is having those in need admitted to this unit,” he says. “It’s knowing that our community members can now receive highquality mental health care from the same organization they trust for their physical health needs.” For Monroe and her team, success also means seeing patients leave the unit stronger, more connected and more hopeful than when they arrived. “Healing looks different for everyone,” she says. “But if a patient leaves here believing in the possibility of wellness again, that’s success.”

A Vision for the Future Looking ahead, both leaders share an optimistic vision of what this center will mean for Johnson County in the years to come. “In five years I hope people will think of Johnson County as a place that truly embraces positive mental health and wellness,” Monroe says. “I hope they’ll see this center as a place of healing, hope and wholeness.” Dunkle agrees, emphasizing the center’s role as part of JMH’s long-term commitment to community well-being. “This is a major step forward, but it’s also part of a continuum,” he says. “We’re not just addressing a crisis — we’re building a future where behavioral health is understood, supported and accessible to all.” As he reflects on the journey from early brainstorming sessions to the completed facility, Dunkle can’t help but feel proud of what the community has accomplished together. “To see our efforts leading to this new 29bed unit is simply amazing,” he says. “It’s proof of what’s possible when people come together for the greater good. And it’s a reminder that our work — our mission to care for this community — never stops.”

FIRED UP NEW INDY IGNITE HEAD COACH LAUREN BERTOLACCI READY FOR 2026 SEASON Writer / Mark Robinson

of the MLV ladder. The journey begins now, with the 2026 season opening Jan. 10 on the road at Dallas. Indy opens its home schedule Jan. 24 against Omaha, the first of 14 matches slated for Fishers Event Center, the sparkling arena filled with energy and loyal Ignite fans urging their team on to victory each time out.

The Indy Ignite came tantalizingly close to achieving the unthinkable in the inaugural season for the women’s professional volleyball franchise, advancing to the championship match of the 2025 Major League Volleyball playoffs before bowing out. It was a heralded accomplishment for the league’s new kid on the block. That, however, was last season, and the Ignite’s sights are now laser-focused on how to take that next step to the top 28 | January 2026 | TownePost.com

Much of the core roster that led the Ignite to the MLV championship match last May has returned, including All-MLV First Team pick and opposite hitter Azhani Tealer, 2025 rookie standouts Lydia Martyn (middle blocker), Elena Scott (libero) and Anna DeBeer (outside hitter), and outside hitter Leketor Member-Meneh, who was well on her way to becoming an all-league selection before an ankle injury cut short her season. There’s also new fire burning within the Ignite, and it starts at the top. Indy named Lauren Bertolacci, a longtime successful pro coach in Europe, as the team’s new head coach in July.

Bertolacci’s philosophy has been simple from the outset. “Getting to the championship final was a huge achievement, and of course we want to take that next step,” Bertolacci says. “For me, the way forward is clear. We’re going to play bold, aggressive and fast. We want to put pressure on teams, score points and play with a big personality and character. “It’s very interesting for spectators

when we’re enjoying ourselves, being the aggressors and pushing the pace and style of the game,” the Australian native adds. “Most importantly, you score more points that way. You win games when you score more points, you let your mind be free, and you can really get in there and just play. I want to build an ‘Ignite way’ of volleyball — a clear identity that we can lean on every time we step on the court. If we stay true to that style, good things will happen.”

has been working hard in training camp, which began in December, to achieve that identity and be ready to go when the first serve is launched on the 2026 season.

The added size to the roster can’t go unnoticed. Of the free agents, middle blocker Alexandra Botezat stands 6-foot6, opposite hitter Camryn Hannah 6-2 and outside hitter Kayla Lund 6-0. In the MLV draft, the Ignite used their first-round selection to take 6-6 middle blocker Cara Cresse, a Fort Wayne, Indiana, native who To that end, Bertolacci and the Ignite was teammates with Ignite returnees Scott staff have bolstered the returning talent and DeBeer at the University of Louisville. by adding more size and skill to the roster through free-agent signings last summer and With a pair of fourth-round picks, Indy the college draft in November. and Emoni Bush (6-3). In the second round, Indy landed libero Emma Halter, who starred at Indianapolis Roncalli High School before playing at the University of Texas. “The draft could not have gone any better for us,” Bertolacci says. “We were able to get all the players we wanted, and we are sure they will add value both on the court and off the court, as they are all high-character human beings.” That last aspect — high character — is what Bertolacci and the Ignite emphasize most as the franchise moves on from an immensely successful first season to build for the long term. “For me, it’s always about having an impact. It’s what I crave,” she says. “This league is new, it’s growing, and it was made clear that our foundation is great but that I’d have the chance to lead the volleyball side of things. That’s what I want: to put my stamp on it, combine my vision with what Ignite already stands for and help push the league forward. I’m not someone who is overly excitable, but honestly, I’m really excited about this.” Ignite season tickets, single-match or group tickets, and information on premium or suite space are available now at IndyIgnitevb.com. 30 | January 2026 | TownePost.com
