TOURISM SPOTLIGHT

Spring is Closer Than You Think

There are plenty of things to do with your family right here in Hamilton County. Get out of the house and take your kids on family-friendly adventures at local parks and attractions to beat the winter blues. Relish the elevated cuisine and dig into our flavorful foodie scene.

CONNER PRAIRIE

Spring is when the outdoor grounds at Conner Prairie in Fishers come alive. Your first stop should be the Animal Encounters barn to visit with the baby goats and sheep. Take a ride high in the sky on the 1859 Balloon Voyage, as weather permits. On a clear day, you can even see the downtown Indianapolis skyline. Then, make your way to Treetop Outpost to explore a four-story treehouse, connect with nature and see stunning views of the White River.

The newest exhibit, Promised Land as Proving Ground is the newest permanent exhibit at Conner Prairie. This exhibit takes visitors on a powerful journey through Black history, from pre-colonial Africa to present-day America, highlighting the cultural significance of food, fellowship, family, and faith as pillars of resilience and strength throughout the Black experience.

STRAWTOWN KOTEEWI PARK

Did you know this is Hamilton County’s largest park at more than 800 acres? There’s more to explore beyond the eight miles of trails. Book a guided horseback trail ride or pony ride with Koteewi Stables & Trails. Or, try your hand at using a bow and arrow at Koteewi Range. If you want a thrilling adventure, visit Koteewi Adventure Park to conquer treetop trails, ziplines and your fear of heights.

PARKS AND TRAILS

Hamilton County has 600+ miles of trails and dozens of great parks. Get your bikes out of the garage and pedal along the Monon Trail, connecting through Sheridan, Westfield, Carmel and south to Indianapolis. Must-see parks in the area for families include local favorites like Central Park in Carmel, Flat Fork Creek Park in Fishers, Forest Park in Noblesville and Cool Creek Park and Nature Center in Westfield.

IKEA AND TOPGOLF

Fun fact: Fishers is home to Indiana’s only IKEA and Topgolf. Even if you’re not redesigning your home, IKEA is a fun place to explore. You could even create your own scavenger hunt or “I Spy” challenge to keep the kids entertained. After all that shopping, head across the street to Topgolf, a premier entertainment venue where you can challenge each other to addictive point-scoring golf games – no experience necessary.

INDOOR ATTRACTIONS

Spring weather in Indiana can be unpredictable. If the forecast calls for a rainy day, take your adventure inside and visit the indoor waterpark at the Monon Community Center, The Escape Room, K1 Speed, Laser Flash or Pinheads for all-day entertainment.

STOUT’S FOOTWEAR

In the mid-1800s, shoes were cobbled, custom made for each individual’s feet. In the latter part of the 1800s, when factories started making shoes, shoe stores began springing up. One of those stores was Harry Stout & Company, located on Massachusetts Avenue in Indianapolis. Founded in 1886 by Harry Stout and William Bristor, Edward Stout later replaced Bristor as partner. Future generations carried on the family business, and today Stout’s Footwear is run by Brad Stout and his wife, Stephanie.

When Brad joined the business in 1982, it wasn’t uncommon for stores to have animals in them.

“At one point we had monkeys, and when I was growing up we had a bird,” says Brad. “That’s why we have Ripley, the macaw in the downtown store.”

The original Stout’s Carmel location, which opened in 1985, was torn down three years ago, and they built a brand-new modern facility in the same location. They now have four locations: downtown Indy, Carmel, Greenwood and Brownsburg.

The shoe industry has evolved dramatically over the past 100 years. Materials have changed. Styles have changed. What people wear out on the street has changed. Through it all, Stout’s Footwear has thrived, and that’s due in large part to their ability to pivot.

“Years ago when shoes were made in the U.S., Stout’s bought the defected shoes and then they had a cobbler fix those defects and sold them at a discount,” says Stephanie, managing director. “When the Walmarts and Rack Room Shoes came along, we pivoted to offer the higher-end, quality sizes and widths.”

carefully curate their

selection of shoes, which includes unique brands from Australia, Austria, Germany, Spain, Portugal and Brazil. Their premier brands are Hoka, Birkenstock, New Balance, Dansko, Brooks and Pikolinos. They also carry Stride Rite, which is a big deal since all Stride Rite shoe stores are gone.

“Of all the demographics that need to be measured, babies and toddlers are one of the most important,” Stephanie says.

Aside from their quality merchandise, Stout’s Footwear provides exceptional personalized customer service.

“Unlike big-box stores, we offer the sitand-fit experience that has become very unique,” says Stephanie. “Hardly anyone does it anymore, and people really value that service.”

This personalized customer service experience includes not just measuring feet, but also asking the right questions to point the customer to the right footwear for them.

“We ask what kind of work they do; are they teachers, nurses, warehouse workers?” Stephanie says. “If they’re going on a trip, we ask what kinds of activities they plan to do. Will they be hiking or walking a ton?”

Often a customer will purchase something that they never would have picked out

themselves without the salesperson’s guidance. For instance, if you suffer with plantar fasciitis or you own custom orthotics, you might do better with a certain shoe over another.

“If your feet hurt, everything hurts,” says Stephanie, who notes that wearing the wrong shoe size can damage your feet. On average, feet will grow two sizes after you think you’ve finished growing. And did you know that your left foot can be bigger than your right? Or that the number of people who wear wide shoes has doubled in the last 20 years? This is why the sit-and-fit experience is so crucial.

“Getting the right size solves 99% of foot problems,” Stephanie says.

In addition to shoes, Stout’s also sells athletic socks, upgraded inserts, bags and a limited supply of outerwear.

“At our downtown Indy store, whenever there’s a Colts game and the opposing team is from a warm locale, they’re never prepared for the cold weather, so they stop in to buy socks, boots and clothes,”

Stephanie says.

Stout’s Footwear is committed to giving back to the community, so they regularly participate in various donations and drives.

“We love supporting Back on My Feet, a national organization that helps people who are transitioning from homelessness or other bad situations,” Stephanie says. Back on My Feet empowers people to achieve economic independence through fitness and community.

“This organization gets people involved in running and walking groups, and moving is vital for mental health,” Stephanie says.

Each year secret shoppers are sent to every independent footwear retailer in the country to assess the customer service

experience. For the last two years Stout’s Footwear has won a gold service medal from Footwear Insight, and this year they came in fifth place in the nation.

Stephanie and Brad love welcoming both loyal and new customers.

“I have a customer who for the last 20 years has driven two hours to see me,” Stephanie says. “And just last week someone came hobbling in off the street because of foot pain. I fit them with a pair of shoes, and they said that was the most pain-free they have felt in forever.”

A Lasting Smile

Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photographer / Sarah Browning

Having a dream is wonderful, but sometimes the idea of pursuing it can feel overwhelming. Dr. Gagandeep Bath, who has been working as a dentist since 2015, confided in her husband, Sunny, that one day she would love to open her own dental practice. Last year he found the perfect opportunity to do so in Carmel.

“I told him I wasn’t ready, but he assured me that I was and encouraged me to go for it,” says Bath. In November 2024 they opened a newly constructed, 5,000-square-foot practice called Smile N’ Style Dental. It is pristine, welcoming and decorated with wallpaper shipped from Italy.

“People have said that this looks more like a five-star resort than a dental clinic,” Sunny says.

Offering a wide range of cosmetic solutions, family care and restorative treatments, Bath provides the very best in dental care by utilizing an array of specialized skills. Bath is a TMJ and oral facial pain specialist who has also earned certifications in dental implants, facial esthetics, soft-tissue surgeries, and dental sleep medicine. This means that she can use oral appliance therapy to treat sleepdisordered breathing such as snoring and obstructive sleep apnea.

“A lot of patients assume that using a CPAP machine is the only option they have to treat such problems, but some patients find the CPAP machines too cumbersome, making a sleep appliance the better option,” Bath says.

At Smile N’ Style, they offer same-day treatments (e.g., crowns and mouth guards). Plus, they do the majority of their procedures in-house. In addition, they are among the first clinics in Indiana to offer advanced equipment and technologies such as laser machines so that patients can enjoy pain-free dentistry options.

Bath began using laser treatments a year and a half ago at her other clinic, Global Smiles Dental, located on Indy’s south side. Many dentists don’t use lasers because they are not yet trained, but Bath supports continuing education and always stays abreast of

new technologies and treatments.

Bath is so passionate about dentistry that she works seven days a week. She is especially empathetic to the patient who is grappling with mouth pain and unable to find relief because they can’t get in to see a dentist.

“This is a gap that I wanted to bridge,” she says. “I want to be the dentist who is available when patients need me.” During the COVID pandemic when everything shut down, Bath refused to do the same because she didn’t want her patients to suffer. Therefore, during the COVID lockdown she wore multiple gowns, masks and gloves, and showed up to treat her patients.

“She cares for people so much,” Sunny says. “She cares about her patients’ finances as well. If you don’t need something done, she will try to save your tooth and save you money.”

Early in Bath’s career, a patient came in for a routine checkup. While examining him, she noticed that there was something going on in his mouth that wasn’t normal. To Bath’s trained eye, she knew something was amiss. The man got a biopsy done, and it turns out

he had stage 2 oral cancer. He went through chemotherapy and radiation and made a complete recovery.

“He stills comes to me after 11 years and is doing perfectly fine,” Bath says. “Every time he sees me, he thanks me for saving his life.”

Seeing a dentist who specializes in TMJ and oral facial pain is not only helpful for identifying potential issues and education about such problems, but is also beneficial to a patient who experiencing chronic oral pain. Bath recently had a patient who complained that he had been dealing with pain in his jaw, neck, shoulder and head for months. He had been to chiropractor, physicians, and even a psychiatrist who prescribed antidepressants. One doc told him to have his heart checked. Another suggested that the weather was causing his issues. The truth was he had TMJ issues and oral facial pain problems.

“It was such a simple diagnosis, but these other doctors made it so complicated,” says Bath, who works with a licensed, certified, highly qualified team who has been by her side for years.

“They bring so much value to the practice,” Bath says.

She appreciates them so much that she has treated them to several all-expenses-paid

vacations, including trips to Puerto Rico, Florida and Colorado.

“It’s her way of thanking her staff for being so loyal,” says Sunny. “They are like family to us.”

Bath is also committed to giving back to the community, so her practice sponsors the Carmel High School softball team and is looking to do additional sponsorships in the future.

In addition to Smile N’ Style, Bath and her husband also own Global Smiles Dental, a clinic that Bath helped grow substantially. Through the years she has built a name for herself in the Indy area, especially among the Indian community.

At Smile N’ Style they see patients from one month old to 100-plus years old.

“My wife is so good with children,” Sunny says.

If you are in need of dental work or are experiencing any oral facial pain, contact Bath today. The practice is accepting new patients and can often get patients in within a day or two. They also allow walk-ins. Patients can call to make an appointment or book online.

Smile N’ Style Dental Care of Carmel is located at 11591 Westfield Boulevard, Suite 200 in Carmel. For more information, call 317-836-5211 or visit smilenstyledentalcarmel.com.

The Carmel International Arts Festival (CIAF) is a 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is Educating the Community Through the Arts. This mission is carried out through a festival held during the last weekend of September in the Arts and Design District of Carmel, Indiana.  The Carmel and greater Indianapolis communities are treated to the finest samplings to purchase and take home. This juried two-day exhibition of 100-140 professional artists working in nine mediums: jewelry, paint, 3D, 2D, wood, ceramics, glass, fiber, and photography. The juried process ensures their art is unique, not

mass-produced, and of the highest of quality. Approximately 33% of the artists come from Indiana. In 2023, eight other states were represented, as well as Carmel’s international sister cities.

The artwork is also judged at the festival by jurors who are professional artists who are paid for their judging services. Ribbons are issued to the artists, including Best in Show, First, Second and Third Place Overall Awards, Best of Media, and Honorable Mention awards in the nine different art mediums. Cash awards, totaling over $7,000, are given as well.

Additionally, the Festival supports their mission through the awarding of several financial scholarships to local high school students. These scholarships are awarded based on artwork submitted to the High School Student Art Exhibit that is also presented during the festival.

ARTIST DEVELOPMENT COMPANY

The focus of Artist Development Company is to be the one-stopshop for artists seeking to grow and expand their brand. As well as for organizations seeking quality entertainment for their events.

Twenty years ago, when Judy Fitzgerald moved from New York City to Carmel, she, along with Cynthia Collins and Don Farrell, had a clear goal: to celebrate the power of theater and enhance the quality of life for those in central Indiana. The trio achieved their goal by founding Actors Theatre of Indiana (ATI). For the past two decades ATI has provided high-quality, professional theater performances and programs that engage, inspire, educate and entertain.

Why art? “Because the arts save people,” says Fitzgerald, the artistic director of ATI.

Each year ATI, a professional equity theater company and the resident theater company at Allied Solutions Center for the Performing Arts, puts on four main-stage productions (primarily musicals) at The Studio Theater, and special performances at the Palladium. While the Palladium seats 1,600 people, ATI’s Studio Theater accommodates just 165, creating an intimate setting with no bad seats in the house.

“When you take a musical that you’d usually see on a much bigger stage and put it on a smaller stage, the audience gets to experience those performances up close and personal,” says Suzanne Fleenor, the current director of the show “9 to 5”. “This enables

them to interpret the show in a more intimate way.”

“9 to 5” centers around three female colleagues trying to navigate the complexities of workplace dynamics and personal challenges, who ultimately bond to confront their chauvinistic and selfcentered boss. The iconic movie starring Dolly Parton, Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda was released in 1980. The dynamic musical written by Parton is just as entertaining.

“Things have changed dramatically since 1980, when Jimmy Carter was president and fashion was somewhat terrifying,” says Fleenor. “Women were just beginning to enter the workplace, all while still managing their homes.”

At its core, “9 to 5” is about fighting for gender equality in the workplace. The message of solidarity among women has stood the test of time. The show features Violet (played by Fitzgerald), Doralee (played by Abigail Storm) and Judy (played by Devan Mathias). ATI co-founder Cynthia Collins plays Roz, a repressed woman secretly pining for her boss.

“She has a wonderful number called ‘Heart to Hart’ that’s funny and satirical,” Fleenor says. “There’s also a fantasy sequence

where the women dream about being someone other than themselves and it is just hysterical.”

The designers had a ball creating ‘70s wigs, makeup and costumes. “It’s the era that taste forgot,” Fleenor says with a smile.

The entire production, running Thursdays through Sundays from April 25 until May 11, celebrates women. It includes a female director, female musical director, female choreographer, and a band that is 90% female.

In celebration of ATI’s 20th anniversary, a gala will be held on June 5 at Hotel Carmichael, featuring a performance, live auction, silent auction, wine pull and more.

“It is sure to be a spectacular evening and an opportunity to support live professional theater,” Fitzgerald says.

A fully staged production of “Titanic: The Musical” will have a two-night run on June 20 and 21 at the Palladium, featuring a spectacular cast, members of the Carmel Symphony Orchestra, and the Indianapolis Arts Chorale.

“We’ll have the orchestra on stage, as well as 60 choral members in the gallery singing

the glorious music of ‘Titanic’; it will be stunning,” Fitzgerald says.

Fitzgerald notes that it took a long time post-COVID for people to return to the theater, but now they are thrilled to be back.

“To sit in a dark theater with people you don’t know and share a common experience provides a sense of community,” she says.

“The arts are under siege right now, so now more than ever, people need to understand how important it is to the development of children to be exposed to the world of the arts, because it makes you a better person,” Fleenor adds,

Although ATI occasionally brings back fan-favorite shows like “Sweeney Todd” and “Million Dollar Quartet”, they strive to keep each season fresh and new for their patrons.

“Our audience is willing to come out and take a chance on shows they’ve never heard of because they trust they’re going to have a great time,” Fitzgerald says.

In February, ATI wrapped up “Whodunit”, a silly, slapstick musical that was a huge boxoffice success, selling out and proving that sometimes people need a lighthearted break from reality.

It’s exactly the type of escape “9 to 5” can provide too.

“I promise you’re going to love the cast, the dancing, the direction and the choreography,” Fitzgerald says. “It’s going to be a powerhouse show packed with hilarity and fun.”

ATI will announce its 2025-2026 season in early April.

“It’s our biggest season to date - truly, Broadway in your backyard,” Fitzgerald says.

Actors Theatre of Indiana will perform “9 to 5” at The Studio Theater at 4 Carter Green in Carmel. To purchase tickets, call the box office at 317-843-3800 or visit atistage.org.

FRESH FOCUS

ABERDEEN SOCIAL HOUSE BRINGS COOL CULINARY CONCEPT TO THE NORTH SIDE

It’s the newest restaurant project by Rootstock Hospitality Group, LLC, and is meant to bring a unique experience to Indianapolis’s north side.

Aberdeen Social House opened on December 2 and is the work of business partners Andrew Vudis and Ryan Craig, restaurateurs behind Another Broken Egg, Capri and others.

“Our company is always looking to open something that fits our brand and when this property became available, we really created a concept to fill a need in the area,” Vudis said. “When Chef Bruce Starr and I talked about the direction we wanted to go in, we knew people were used to the steakhouse or Chinese, etcetera, so we went with world fusion and American comfort classics with a contemporary twist.”

Think high-end restaurant and large-scale venue with something on the menu for everyone.

“Everyone has a different palate,” Vudis said. “I do more of the culinary part of our company and enjoy taking something that sounds fancy but is really pork belly pared with this or that. It’s creating dishes you wouldn’t find anywhere else.”

Starr is the culinary director for Rootstock and will serve as opening chef at Aberdeen. He’s

Shea Parthun / General Manager
Jonathan Meza / Chef

bringing a couple of Capri favorites to the new restaurant, including lasagna and the popular appetizer, stuffed pepper.

“We wanted people to know that we’re part of the same family and it fit with what we were doing at Aberdeen,” Vudis said.

Of course there will be several new items too.

“One of our bestselling appetizers is the A-5 Wagyu Pierogi,” Vudis said. “The Smoked Short Rib and the Seasonal Salmon are both crowd favorites.”

The menu includes prime ribeye, a smash burger, chicken - and don’t forget the wine selection. Much like their menu, the Rootstock team carefully selected the perfect wine parings for each dish, including timeless classics to bold new discoveries.

For the foodies out there, Vudis said the brunch menu includes the Shogun Benedict

and the Shakshuka - maybe not for everyone, but everyone can find something.

One of their main goals was not to have top-selling appetizers and entrées. Every item on the menu is worth a try.

“I’ve worked in restaurants and when I go to a restaurant, I’ll often ask the server to bring me their favorite thing on the menu - not what everyone else orders, not the number-one seller, just whatever you think is best on the menu,” Vudis said. “They’re typically really in tune to what’s good, and I think if you asked five servers at Aberdeen the same question, you’d get at least four different answers.”

Vudis said he and Craig worked with Starr in the past. Bringing him in for such a large undertaking was important because he shares a passion for food and, more importantly, a passion for the entire concept.

“Together we are taking decades of restaurant experience and thinking through every little detail,” Vudis said. “We’ve received a lot of compliments about the decor. It’s different; it’s beautiful. From the art on the walls to the music we play, I think it’s something fresh for this area and looks like it belongs in a bigger, East Coast city.”

So far the smart-casual dress code has brought in plenty of locals, and news of the new arrival is spreading by word of mouth.

Vudis said they want Aberdeen Social House to serve as that place you can go without a special occasion.

“This is not a stuffy place,” he said. “You won’t feel underdressed and you don’t need a reason to go and have a lobster or a steak on a Tuesday evening. We want to be different but very approachable. If you look at how we prepare some of these meals, it’s not something you’d typically see, and I think that’s part of the appeal. For example, a lot of people like the Tuna Tartare. We looked at how to upgrade it a bit and our tuna comes with saffron, one of the most luxurious ingredients you can get.”

No longer do residents on the northside have to travel to downtown Indianapolis or Keystone at the Crossing for upscale dining options.

“We’ve been hearing people say they’re excited to have a place closer to home,” Vudis said. “We want to give them a great space to come and have a great meal, enjoy the art, enjoy the music and enjoy time together.”

Aberdeen Social House is located at at 150 West 96th Street in Indianapolis. For more info, visit aberdeensocialhouse.com.

A BREATH OF FRESH AIR

MODERN DAY WINDOW & DOOR IS FOCUSED ON THE CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE

Lee L. needed to replace the bow front window in her 75-year-old house, and in just two days, the team at Modern Day Window & Door replaced 27 floor-toceiling windows with nine elegant Andersen casements.

“As the largest exterior wall of the living room, I was anxious to make a significant design change, but Jon Golm of Modern Day Window & Door created a beautiful elevation that allayed any concern,” says Lee.

The team at Modern Day Window & Door likes to say, “Same house, new home” when describing their work. That’s the result each time they transform a homeowner’s retreat by installing beautiful new windows and doors. And they do so by delivering an exceptional, five-star experience.

“Our success is built on the expertise and dedication of our team,” says Scott Dorrell, co-founder of the company.

His partner and co-founder, Andy Brown, has more than 20 years of experience in operations and has personally installed more than 15,000 windows and doors. In addition, Modern Day Window & Door’s design team has completed designs on a combined 4,000 window and door projects.

“From that experience, we have figured out

how to give each of our customers a five-star experience,” Dorrell says.

That five-star experience consists of five pillars, including quality product offerings, a transparent design process, exceptional communication, expert installation, and post-sale service and support. This means that from the initial design to the ordering, the communications, the installation, the service, and the post-completion all involve phenomenal customer service.

Brent B. found the design process and consultation easy and pressure-free.

“Scott was exceptional at describing the variety of products, helping us make a good decision for our home and our budget,” he says. “I love supporting small businesses, and the folks at Modern Day are phenomenal.”

Kerensa W. had numerous companies out to her house for estimates, but she hired Modern Day because they stood out from the competition.

“They helped me retain the individual charm of my 50-plus-year home and gave it an incredible renewal,” she says. “I’m thankful for their outstanding workmanship and the beauty and comfort they added to my home. The windows and installation

inside and out are stunning.”

Janie H. agrees, as she maintains that from start to finish, working with Modern Day Window & Door was a truly professional experience.

“We had no idea that a simple change of window could have such a huge impact on the overall feel of our home, and working with Scott and Andrew made the process easy,” says Janie. “The workmanship was outstanding.”

Not only does the company provide a fivestar experience, but they have also received all five-star reviews.

Jill M. valued the professionalism and courtesy she received from everyone at the company.

“Lyndsey was awesome from the moment she walked in our door,” she says. “She helped us build our beautiful new front door by listening to our wants and needs. The

Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing

installation crew was just as awesome.”

Modern Day Window & Door focuses on Andersen replacement windows alongside other trusted brands.

“We pride ourselves on being more than just a supplier of high-quality windows and doors,” Dorrell says. “We’re a company that leverages strategic partnerships with top-tier suppliers, utilizes cutting-edge technology for design and relationship management, and boasts an all-star team of industry experts.”

Matt F. knew he was in good hands from the moment he met with Golm for the consultation.

“Jon was attentive and helped us select the perfect windows for our home,” says Matt. “When it came time for installation, Andy and the crew were professional, efficient, and meticulous.”

Matt upgraded his home with beautiful, energy-efficient windows and a sleek sliding patio door - a transformation that made a remarkable difference in the home. He was blown away by both the quality of the products and the installation.

“We had an incredible experience with Modern Day, and their top-notch service and superior craftsmanship,” Matt says.

William B. says he couldn’t have had a better experience than the one he had with Modern Day Window & Door.

“Through consultation with their sales team headed by Jon Golm to the entire installation process led by their General Manager Andy Brown, we experienced nothing but great outcomes and product quality,” says William. “We acquired a beautiful custom front door by ProVia and two Andersen sliding patio doors. We couldn’t recommend them more highly.”

CONNECTION POINTE CHRISTIAN CHURCH OPENS NEW LOCATION

On Easter Sunday, April 20, Connection Pointe Christian Church will celebrate the grand opening of its Carmel location. With a long history in central Indiana dating back to 1837, church leadership is humbled and grateful to launch a second church home in Hamilton County.

The Carmel location at 2599 East 98th Street joins Avon, Brownsburg, and Fishers in Connection Pointe Christian Church’s mission to connect people to Jesus and each other. Services are at 9:15 a.m. and 11 a.m.; children from newborns to fifth-graders are welcomed at both times, while the 11 a.m. service will accommodate middle school and high school students.

“We had been praying many years about Hamilton County,” says Denise McCleese, executive pastor of strategy and engagement. “As a multigenerational church, we feel God’s calling us to the suburbs, where schools and communities are focused on raising families. The next generation, our kids and students, are the centerpiece of our vision.”

Located on 98th Street, Connection

Pointe leadership is excited about finalizing renovations after two years. The nearly 32,000-square-foot building underwent a complete renovation, creating an environment where people can experience life change and unconditional love.

The facility is an existing building previously known as Lighthouse Tabernacle, which will continue to meet at this location for a time. Connection Pointe church leaders are thrilled to continue the legacy Lighthouse Tabernacle began by focusing on reaching more people with the love of Christ.

“There are three pillars to Connection Pointe’s vision,” McCleese says. “The first pillar of the vision is to maximize and multiply Jesus’ followers so they can grow in their faith and then help others experience the hope that Jesus brings. The second is to raise the strongest generation, our kids and students, to outdo us in changing the world for Jesus. The third is to amplify Jesus online and globally through digital tools that help people follow Jesus daily on their phones and in their life, and support the church’s 26 full-time missionaries around the world.”

McCleese says God has given them an opportunity in Hamilton County, and it’s

one the church does not take lightly. “We want to reach the lost, raise disciples to go into the community, follow Jesus, and love our neighbor,” McCleese says. “Chris Maloney, who lives in Westfield, will be the pastor at the Carmel location. We are super excited for Easter Sunday, and we hope people in the community will check us out.”

Offering digital tools - including CP+, a spiritual fitness app, livestream services every weekend, podcasts, and Daily Hope, a daily devotional text message that comes straight to your phone 365 days a year - is part of the church’s outreach.

All upcoming program offerings are posted on the website at cp.church. To subscribe to Daily Hope, the devotional text message, text DAILY to 71093.

Joining Forces to Deliver

Back in 1994, the City of Carmel embarked on a journey that would forever change its cultural landscape. With the establishment of its first Sister City relationship with Kawachinagano, Osaka, Japan, Carmel opened its heart to a world of shared experiences and deepening bonds. The decision was made after Kawachinagano’s Friendship City Research Group toured Indiana and found Carmel’s environment, abundant nature and educational interests to be strikingly similar to its own.

This blossoming relationship saw further growth in 1998 when Carmel High School and Seikyo Gakuen School became sister schools. Students from both sides experienced the enriching adventure of living away from home, fostering a profound understanding and appreciation for each other’s cultures.

The partnership continued to flourish, culminating in the creation of a Japanese Garden in Carmel in 2007. Nestled behind City Hall, the garden boasts a traditional Sukiya

gate, constructed with authentic materials from Japan and Indiana limestone that was shipped to Japan and engraved with inscriptions for the gate. Remarkably, the gate was assembled using special hand tools, without the use of modern nails, screws, brackets or hinges.

In a joint effort between Kawachinagano Rotary Club and Carmel Rotary Club, a tea gazebo was built in 2010 to commemorate the Sister City relationship and celebrate the founding anniversary of the Japanese Rotary group. This charming addition has become a symbol of unity and friendship.

Fast-forward to 2021, when Carmel took a bold step to enhance the garden, tripling its size and extending it all the way to Carmel Drive. To mark the completion of this ambitious project, the inaugural Cherry Blossom Festival will take place at One Civic Square on May 4, 2025, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. This event, presented by Kawachinagano Carmel Sister Cities Inc. in partnership with the City of Carmel, promises to be a vibrant celebration of Japanese culture and the 30-year relationship between the two

communities. With free admission, attendees can expect delightful stage performances, children’s activities in a special tent, and a plethora of traditional Japanese cultural experiences.

The festival will also welcome the esteemed Japanese Garden designer and creator, Mr. Hoichi Kurisu, commissioned for the garden’s redesign and expansion. Joining Carmel Mayor Sue Finkam in attendance will be the mayor of Kawachinagano City, Osaka, accompanied by his delegation, adding an extra layer of significance to the event.

Festival organizer Kumiko Kay Brunson enthusiastically invites everyone to join in the festivities. “All are welcome,” Brunson says. “We hope everyone from Carmel will come and enjoy the reopening of the Kawachinagano Japanese Garden. Guests can enjoy the tastes of Japan as well as dances, Japanese tea ceremony, origami, kendama, and other traditional cultural events. It will be a great day to spend with your friends and family.”

With the Cherry Blossom Festival on the horizon, Carmel is poised to embrace its rich cultural connections and celebrate the enduring friendship with Kawachinagano.
