As I embark on my tenure as Mayor of this remarkable city, I am filled with excitement and a profound sense of responsibility. Our community is a unique and special place, brimming with diverse talents, perspectives, and boundless potential.

Carmel has so much to offer for people of all ages and backgrounds, and I hope you’ll take advantage of all of it. We are proud of our safe neighborhoods, excellent schools, beautiful parks and trails, and a thriving Main Street with unique shops and restaurants. Carmel also boasts a rich tapestry of culture, diverse cultural attractions, and a commitment to progress. With our convenient location in Central Indiana and strong local economy, this is an ideal place to live, work, and raise a family.

For those new residents of Carmel, getting involved is one of the best ways to quickly feel at home here. I encourage residents both old and new to explore our city’s many events and activities, from concerts at the Palladium and winter traditions like the Carmel Christkindlmarkt, to recreational sports leagues through Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation and volunteer opportunities at our countless community organizations. Don’t be afraid to get out there, meet new people, and become part of what makes this community so special.

Our city staff and I are committed to providing outstanding services to provide and maintain a world-class quality of life for all residents. CARMEL EDUCATION FOUNDATION CELEBRATED THE 20TH ANNUAL TASTE OF CARMEL

On Friday, March 8, 2024, Carmel Education Foundation (CEF) celebrated the 20th annual Taste of Carmel at 502 East Event Centre in Carmel. The theme of the event, Starry Nights, was the perfect backdrop to showcase over 40 local food and beverage establishments, a raffle featuring an Indy Facets necklace custom designed to commemorate the 2024 solar eclipse, two Pedego electric bikes, and a 2025 Taste of Carmel VIP Package.

Over 1,200 guests attended the event, representing CEF community partners, Carmel Clay Schools educators and parents, and many other friends of CEF. A special thank-you to our Premier Sponsors. For the third year, CoasterStone provided custom car and table coasters and State Bank hosted the First Taste VIP Party. 185 Promotions and Apparel sponsored the Last Taste After Party for the second year in a row. Other Premier partners were Fanning Howey, the City of Carmel and Ed Martin Automotive, all of whom are engaged with CEF in multiple ways.

Guiding guests throughout the evening were emcees Jeff Worrell of Good Day Carmel and Carmel City Council, and Jack Russell, President of OneZone. This dynamic duo represented the collaboration between Carmel Education Foundation and the community. Jennifer Penix, executive director of CEF says “CEF is an integral part of our community. We create partnerships with local businesses, organizations and community members to provide resources to students, staff and families of Carmel Clay Schools. While we

rely on the financial generosity of companies and individuals, we really focus on building relationships with people who care about our schools. Many volunteers serve on CEF committees or the board, and are integral in connecting our mission to others. Jack and Jeff were the perfect representation of the connection between CEF, the business community and our city as a whole.”

More than $80,000 were raised to support Carmel Education Foundation’s mission of supporting Carmel Clay students in academic achievement and lifelong learning. Funds will be used to support the ACHIEVE Initiative, which provides equitable and accessible programs focused on workforce preparation to district-wide grade levels, the Great Idea Grant Program, and the state’s largest public education foundation scholarship program.

Penix attributes the success of this event to a dedicated group of volunteers who worked tirelessly in the planning, along with the enthusiastic support of the CEF board of directors and assistance from Detail and Design.

Special guests of the evening were three students, and their teachers, who received a student-led grant from CEF in 2023. Their grant, titled Color our Community with Culture, funded a collection of bilingual books that have been used to engage multilingual learners in peer reading, benefiting all students at Forest Dale Elementary. Alison Wren, a Forest Dale teacher and one of the three

teacher sponsors for this grant, shared that “the students who received this grant have gained incredible confidence and leadership skills by applying for this grant and seeing how successful it is with their peers.”

When the students took center stage to share their story, the smiles on the faces of guests were a testament to what the foundation is all about - inspiring learning in our future leaders.

Jim Martin

December 3, 1960, is a date retired Carmel Firefighter Jim Martin will never forget. As a young man on that fateful day, he was at work at his father’s garage on Carmel’s far west side when he and his brother looked up and saw black smoke in the sky above the town of Carmel. Through instinct, curiosity or both, they jumped in the car and went towards the fire.

They came upon a large grass fire approaching a barn and realized they had to help the volunteer firefighters on the scene. After successfully saving the barn, Assistant Chief Skip Clark told the boys, “We need

firefighters on the west side of Carmel. We have a meeting tonight - you should attend and join us.”

That same afternoon, responding to another grass fire, a car turned in front of Clark while he was driving, and he lost his life in the line of duty. It was a devastating blow to the community and pivotal day in the life of Jim Martin, as he tells the story and recalls the sadness. Martin joined as a volunteer and eventually became the fifth full-time, paid Carmel firefighter. In 1988 Carmel eliminated the last volunteer and became a professional, full-time staffed and paid fire

department.

Martin is well-known for sitting atop vintage fire trucks at CarmelFest, delivering Santa to Christkindlmarkt, and attending various parades and neighborhood events. Since retiring as assistant fire chief in 1996, he is responsible for starting, loving and caring for Carmel’s rich fire department history as president of the Carmel Fire Buffs & Fire Department Museum, Inc.

led the charge in obtaining and restoring antique fire apparatus, safety gear and memorabilia. Soon you will be able to enjoy those memories in the brand-new home of the Fire Buffs Museum at 210 Veterans Way, exactly where that first fire station stood.

In 1989 Martin happened to be at a factory looking at a potential new truck for Carmel, when he spotted an old 1953 Seagrave that had seen better days. The owner said Martin could have it for $1,000. He called the firehouse back in Carmel and Firefighter John Moriarty answered the phone. “Get 10 guys to chip in $100 and we have our first truck for the Fire Buffs,” Martin said at the time.

True to Carmel Fire Department style, Moriarty came up with 18 donations and

the truck was on its way to Carmel. Eighteen is the official number in the center of the Fire Buffs logo and forever honors those first donations.

In 1994 I had my first turn at chairing CarmelFest. The event was growing quickly and we decided to move the event from the Carmel High School football stadium to Civic Square at City Hall. We worried about parking, so Martin, using his own time and trucks, went to the Indiana State Fair and towed five people-mover trailers back to Carmel to run parking shuttles.

“The Fire Buffs museum provided a place for the history of the Carmel Clay Fire Department to be housed,” said current Carmel Fire Chief David Haboush. “With Chief Martin’s leadership, the Fire Buffs

were able to have antique firetrucks located in, and proudly preserve, the original Carmel Fire headquarters building.”

Carmel’s first engine is being restored, led by retired Firefighter Gary Dufek, and will someday take its rightful place back in the first fire-station-turned-museum. With Martin’s dedication to this community and love for each and every firefighter and the fire service, Engine #1 can now return to hallowed ground.

Spring is when the outdoor grounds at Conner Prairie in Fishers come alive. Your first stop should be the Animal Encounters barn to visit with the baby goats and sheep. The newest exhibit, Promised Land as Proving Ground, covers centuries of African American history from pre-colonial Africa to present day. GREGORY HANCOCK DANCE THEATRE CELEBRATING 26TH SEASON

Established in 1997, Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre (GHDT) was founded by Gregory Hancock in Carmel. Originally from Kansas, Hancock moved to the area with family as a young man. GHDT was born from his love of the arts and theater. A personal love of musical performances transitioned to theater, and on to professional work in visual arts. The GHDT team is now celebrating its 26th season.

As a resident company at the Tarkington at The Center for Performing Arts, the company has been heavily involved in the development of the arts in the local community. Hancock says GHDT was able to participate in the planning process of The Center, and is grateful that the company has since been the resident professional dance company with the Tarkington.

Each season, GHDT performs three to four performances at The Center, with the final performance for the 2023-2024 season being “SAGAS AND SUPERSTITIONS” on June 7 and 8. The company now hosts an additional performance space, The Florence Theatre. Named after Hancock’s mother, this theater is a smaller, more intimate setting within the academy of GHDT.

GHDT recently wrapped up “The Wild West” three-week performance at The Florence Theatre. The smaller environment presents a unique experience for the audience as the performers are able to engage directly with the guests. Additional performances at The Florence will be hosted periodically through the coming months.

GHDT will present “FABLES AND FOLKLORE” at The Tarkington April 5 and 6. “FABLES AND FOLKLORE” will feature the world premiere of “GOLEM.” Inspired by Jewish folklore surrounding the golem of

Prague, this original work by Hancock tells the story of a mud creature crafted by a rabbi to defend the Jewish ghetto of Prague from persecution. GHDT brings elements of this story into our current world, where once again, the world needs golem-like protection from sometimes-invisible enemies. A timely tale, “GOLEM” utilizes a solar eclipse as a metaphor where light is overshadowed by darkness, but then reappears as a sign of hope and survival. Featuring both melancholy and joyful klezmer music, “GOLEM” utilizes layers of musical and theatrical nuance to tell a tale from the past, yet direct a voice to the present. The production is presented in partnership with the Jewish Community Center of Indianapolis.

Also on the program is the long-awaited return of GHDT’s production of “PINOCCHIO,” a theatrical masterpiece created by Hancock and inspired by the classic Italian tale. Featuring a cast of colorful characters in a steampunk setting with theatrical choreography, this version weaves a cautionary tale of love and sacrifice into the visual storytelling. Joined by characters Geppetto, the Cricket and the Blue Fairy, PINOCCHIO, a puppet who magically becomes a real boy, sets out on his own to discover the world and experiences consequential adventure.

The Academy of GHDT - the training facility for youth dancers - opened in 2010 as an affiliation of GHDT nonprofit organization. A variety of dance genres are taught at The Academy of GHDT by the talented company dancers. Youth classes are taught

in the evenings throughout the week. Several youth dancers have graduated out of the program at The Academy and moved into a professional role within the GHDT company. Many dancers within the company go on to competition. However, the main focus of GHDT is to build a solid foundation of technique and skill for those students looking to move into a professional performance career.

Collaboration is a goal both within GHDT as well as with other performing arts organizations in the area. One such experience is that of a performance created and directed by Hancock and performed with the Carmel Symphony, “La Casa Azul.”

Upon the passing of Christel DeHaan, a local businesswoman and philanthropist, GHDT was awarded a legacy gift from the Christel DeHaan foundation to continue its work in the community. Because of this exceptional gift, Hancock says the organization is strengthened, enriched and inspired. Humbled by the generous gift, the company seeks to continue the legacy of philanthropy into future generations.

ACTORS THEATRE OF INDIANA CLOSES IN ON 20-YEAR MARK Story

Approaching its 20th year, Actors Theatre of Indiana (ATI) is celebrating its rich history of almost two decades, in conjunction with the vision of where the organization is headed.

Founded in 2005 by a trio of professional

performers, Judy Fitzgerald, Cynthia Collins and Don Farrell, the ATI team is bringing its 2023-2024 season to a wrap this spring as it embarks on a new horizon with incoming Executive Director Brian Frost.

The group has performed on famous New York stages, offBroadway, alongside symphony orchestras, in intimate settings of dinner theater, and on national and international tours. In the early years of ATI, this small team handled all facets of the business, from marketing the shows to booking, selling tickets, performing, managing the talent, choreographing and directing. The group grew from small, intimate settings to large stages across the area. In 2004 a shared vision for the community of theater aligned the City of Carmel officials with ATI. Fitzgerald recalls how quickly her life changed in that year. “In one year we bought a house, had a baby and

started a company,” she says.

Fitzgerald started singing in talent shows at the age of 5. Having grown up with a music teacher and singer as a mother who shared her love, she was inclined to begin performing early in life. She continued on into theater performance and show choir in her high school years and into college. It became her life when she majored in musical theater at Millikin University, before going on to work professionally in Chicago. She then moved east to New York where she remained for 16 years, before returning to Carmel, her hometown.

Fitzgerald returned with a passion to create in her hometown what she had experienced in other areas - a destination for the arts. Recalling what she had built through the first half of her career, she and with her team sought the chance to provide these exceptional performances to the local community.

the group was able to lean on the large breadth of knowledge they’d compiled. When The Studio Theater, located in the James Building, was presented to the group as a “black box” design in 2011, Fitzgerald and the team found a rare space to build an intimate stage setting.

Upon finding their new home, ATI continued to develop the vision for the company into what you know today. As the now resident professional company, ATI hires talent for all positions within each production. Talent is sourced locally and beyond. Governed by a Board of Trustees, ATI has grown as a nonprofit through the generous donations and support from the community.

Fitzgerald expresses her gratitude for Christel DeHaan and the recent endowment from the Christel DeHaan foundation in 2023. She speaks of how impactful DeHaan was on her life and how the gift has greatly emboldened the company. Reflecting on

her experience within the works of theater, Fitzgerald attributes some of the most meaningful relationships in her life to the connections made on the stage.

Moving forward into the 2024-2025 season, the ATI Board of Trustees is working together with Fitzgerald, Associate Artistic Director Darrin Murrell, and Frost to finalize the upcoming schedule of performances. A variety of four shows and a special performance at the Palladium are slated for this season. In addition to the exciting new opportunities for collaboration on the stage, ATI is planning the announcement of a new board president. A resounding presence of “new breath” is flowing through the spaces of Actors Theatre of Indiana.

SPRINGHETTI DENTISTRY

Since 2020, Dr. Aaron Springhetti has been offering a specialized, full-service dental practice for patients looking for something unique.

It’s not every day you hear a dentist refer to his craft as “art,” but for Springhetti, his artistic side led to his passion for cosmetic dentistry.

“I’ve always wanted to take care of people and was interested in the health care field,” he said. “When I was young, I found I had a knack for art. I was always working on projects, always working with my hands, and in college I minored in art. I was introduced to dentistry as something that was both health care related, and getting to create things with your hands, and I knew it was the right path for me.”

He’s in the process of earning accreditation through the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. Since the 1990s only 500 dentists in the world have received accreditation and only one other in Indianapolis - a mentor of Springhetti.

“Cosmetic dentistry isn’t considered a specialty right now,” Springhetti said. “I think it will be in the future, but it’s important that those of us who specialize

in cosmetic dentistry have received the necessary training and experience. It’s something I believe in, love and truly enjoy. Whether working on a single tooth or a full smile rehabilitation, there are a lot of details that go into it.”

Over the past few years, advances in technology allow patients to see 3D renderings of what their finished smile will look like, but Springhetti said it’s the skill and experience that deliver those results.

“I love that we can offer a digital version for patients to see,” he said. “It makes treatment easier and results more predictable, but really, the patient always looks better than the digital version. It’s important to have someone dedicated to their craft, devoted to always learning more and really fine-tuning their skills.”

Springhetti Dentistry offers everything from routine cleanings to orthodontics to advanced cosmetic dentistry and full-mouth rehabilitation. The goal behind all of their work is to create healthy teeth and smiles for each patient.

Some patients come to Springhetti with years of negative experiences and feelings of self-consciousness about their smile.

“You sometimes see someone cover their mouth when they smile, or you can tell

when someone hesitates before smiling,” Springhetti said. “We’ve had countless patients who have done smile rehabilitation and said, ‘I’ve never felt so good about myself.’ It’s life-changing for many.”

Knowing the joy he’s seen on patients’ faces, Springhetti volunteers once per month at the Heart & Soul free dental clinic in Westfield. He’s been on numerous dental mission trips, and once per year the office puts on Smiles for the Community Day, providing free dental services to underserved individuals at the office.

Ultimately, it’s the relationships he’s forming that matter most.

“You get to know your patient, hear their stories, and learn about their life and their family,” Springhetti said. “We’re spending a lot of time with them, so it’s much more than just a patient-provider relationship; our patients are part of our dental family. You look forward to seeing those patients just for who they are, rather than focusing on clinical or procedural aspects of the relationship.”
