DeVeau’s School of Gymnastics was founded in 1982 by Joan DeVeau with 185 gymnasts and three instructors in a 5,000 sq. ft. facility. Over the past 35 years, they have moved locations twice and have expanded three times. They now offer gymnastics, ninja training, cheerleading, trampoline, and tumbling from babies all the way up to twelfth grade.

Their co-ed preschool program introduces gymnastics and more. “We’re teaching fine and gross motor skills, following directions, waiting one’s turn, as well as colors, shapes, left and right,” says Taryn DeVeau, Joan’s daughter and the gym’s marketing manager. “We’re also teaching kids how to hop, skip, jump, and gallop — not just how to cartwheel.”

“Gymnastics and all of our acrobatic-based sports provide a great foundation for our kids for whatever they choose to do in life,” Taryn says.

To accommodate the 300-plus competitive team members, as well as the 1,500 students enrolled in their recreational classes, they recently expanded to a 56,000 sq. ft. building in Fishers and now boast more than 40 instructors. atCarmel.com / MAY 2019 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / 5

Taryn takes great pride in running the family establishment. Not only do she and her husband Luke Lautzenheiser now own the facility, but her aunt works the front desk. Plus, many of their coaches were former DeVeau’s gymnasts who now have their own children in the program.

“Between our coaches and our families that are part of our gym, we truly are a family,” Taryn says. “We want to thank everybody and announce that we are officially open again — back and better than ever!”

For someone who has recently become a parent or perhaps juggles working from home while keeping toddlers occupied, Urban Chalkboard, located at 452 East Carmel Drive, is a helpful resource.

At first glance, it looks like a café with a huge play area for children. It is actually an intentionally designed, high-quality play space for children age five and under. It provides an environment where parents feel free to check emails or get some work done while play coaches supervise and gently direct play designed to promote early childhood development.

Co-owners Jessica Beer and Tonya Bergeson-Dana met each other when they worked as research scientists at the Indiana School of Medicine in the Department of Otolaryngology, which focuses on treatment for diseases of the ear, nose and throat. Beer and BergesonDana were specifically studying how young children adjust when receiving a cochlear implant after being born with a severe or complete hearing loss. Both women became fascinated by the process of how all babies and toddlers learn from input of the world around them.

of the brain in a way that doesn’t happen at any other time of life. At the same time, adults are going through the transition to parenthood. They are dealing with exhaustion, maintaining relationships and how their career is impacted.”

Beer and Bergeson-Dana took several years to explore the idea of opening a play café — a space with an environment that would not only promote learning for young children but would also support parents.

In 2011, they reached out to the precursor of Launch Fishers, the Entrepreneurship Advancement Center (EAC) in Fishers.

EAC assisted them by connecting them to resources they needed to educate themselves on how to start a business. The

pair entered and won an EAC business plan competition. After securing funding, they started searching for a suitable location and, in 2014, they opened the doors of Urban Chalkboard for business.

The front desk café portion of the space is the first thing patrons encounter when they enter. There, parents check in with a

play coach, set up a tab for food and pay the price of admission of $12 per each child nine months or over. Reservations can be made online before coming to the café — at a reduced cost of $10 a child — ensuring a guaranteed space in the play café or for any class or activity going on that day. Most classes are included with the entrance fee but some, such as Babies Music Cognition,

require an extra charge. Information about all the classes offered can be viewed online.

Each area within the café has different nooks which serve varying purposes. The Baby Play Area is designed for infants and non-walkers under the age of 18 months.

up, kitchen and playhouse nooks. A studio houses the café’s newest addition, the Beam. A 10 by 12-foot image is projected on a smart floor. As babies and toddlers move, the image changes and the children make a connection between their body movements and the world around them. Kristen Katibah and Jennifer Paynter say Burn Boot Camp can change your life, and they count themselves as proof of the fitness center’s impact.

Burn Boot Camp’s offerings primarily are for women, although it also has co-ed camps.

After all, they were regulars at a Burn Boot Camp themselves when they met and fell in love with Burn’s philosophy and environment. They then decided to team up, make fitness their careers and open their own locations. Now franchise partners, Katibah is the co-head trainer at the Fishers Burn Boot Camp, and Paynter is the head trainer in Carmel.

“We cater to everyone who comes in the doors, regardless of what fitness level they are at,” Paynter says.

Each’s day’s camps, led by a certified personal trainer, focus on a different theme or part of the body. But all workouts include high-energy exercise and music. And they all ensure that everyone is an active participant, even those who need to modify their workouts.

Burn Boot Camp opened in Fishers in January 2018 with Carmel following in February 2019. The Fishers location already has a large community, and the Carmel facility is growing steadily — success the franchise partners say is a credit to the effect that Burn Boot Camp’s programs can have on those who take part.

“It’s personal training in a group setting,” Katibah says. “We’re not just leading from the front and barking out orders. We’re getting side by side with someone and giving everyone a few minutes with us to have their own victory, to give them the chance to do what they didn’t think they could do before.”

“We are a community of women who support each other, lift each other up and inspire strength in and out of the gym,” Katibah says.

The result, the trainers say, often is a transformation that goes beyond anything a scale can measure. Burn Boot Camp has drawn women of all ages and sometimes from multiple generations in one family.

Clients share their success stories on the gym’s “Transformation Wall” with victories ranging from weight loss to improved outlook on life.

Headquartered in Charlotte, N.C. — where Katibah and Paynter met — the gym’s services revolve around 45-minute classes, known as camps, that aim to

“The Snake is by far our most popular feature, and it draws people from everywhere,” Fischer says. “It’s one-ofa-kind, and other facilities have tried to duplicate it around the world but it’s really unique. You can climb to the top with no ropes or harness, and if you fall, you fall into a nice, fluffy marshmallow pit.”

Hoosier Heights is truly an all-ages affair — member and non-member kids up to around age 10 can participate in a twohour, introductory Youth Climbing Club, which includes game-based activities that familiarize kids with the basics of safe climbing. The members-only Hoosier Heights Recreation Team is also for new climbers, but covers climbing technique, terminology and etiquette in detail.

“Then we have our intermediate team that starts to get a little more serious with more dedication involved,” Fischer says. “You can compete at that level at the USA climbing competitions around the tri-state area. After

that, we have our Advanced team where things get really serious, and then our Elite team which are the best climbers in the gym. They’re basically little superheroes and compete at the national level.”

Fischer touts the sheer physical benefits of spending a day at Hoosier Heights, in addition to the fun participants typically have.

“It’s a total body workout,” he says. “You’re of course working all of the back and the pull muscles, but there’s a lot of static holding almost like doing a plank, where you’re flexing your calves, quads, glutes and your core. So you get quite the lower-body workout too. It’s as full-body of a workout as it gets.”

That’s not all. Hoosier Heights offers a yoga program and fitness area with treadmills, spin bikes, free weights and more. Those interested in further diversifying their exercise routine can also explore the Dojo, which houses obstacle courses similar to those featured on the “American Ninja Warrior” television show as well as resistance equipment like dumbbells and TRX bands.

“One other thing that I don’t think many people realize is that climbing is like vertical chess, and you have to figure out how to get from point A to point B using just your body,” Fischer adds. “There’s a mind game to it that can be very satisfying when you figure it out.”

Evan Costas, co-owner of Burgerhaus, 89 Veterans Way, Carmel, had a big goal before he started his group of successful restaurants.

One of them was to offer a larger selection of craft hamburgers than other places do.

After tasting one of Burgerhaus’ delicious creations, it’s clear Costas successfully met his goal.

“My dad (Burgerhaus Co-Owner Jon Costas) and I really wanted to give people more hamburger options,” Costas says. “We wanted to take the American hamburger and make it more international, so we took different burger flavors from around the world and brought them to our guests at our different Burgerhaus locations.”

Costas noted that the Carmel location opened March of last year to an enthusiastic response from area residents.

“We have had a lot of people tell us they were thrilled we opened here,” Costas says.

“I love Carmel and enjoy being here in the Arts & Design district. I like the amount of parking we have here and being in downtown Carmel. This city reminds me a lot of my hometown of Valparaiso, where we have another Burgerhaus. Carmel is a beautiful city with extremely friendly people.”

Costas has been pleased with the expansion of Burgerhaus while being able to maintain

the high quality of the food.

“We want everyone to have a memorable meal and keep coming back,” he says.

Costas also has Burgerhaus locations in Schererville and Indianapolis.

“We have been very happy to be able to expand into different locations and bring our international craft burgers to more people,” Costas says. “One of our most popular burgers has been the Aussie, a combo of thick Applewood bacon, smoked Gouda, a fried egg, mayo, butter lettuce and beefsteak tomato. We serve it on a whole wheat bun.”

The Vienna Burger has been another customer favorite at the Carmel location. General Manager Andrea Smith created the burger, which has Applewood bacon, beer-braised onions, bacon jam, Provolone cheese, arugula and mayo.

“Andrea has been happy that guests have enjoyed her creation,” Costas says.

“She’s very proud of that. We encourage all of our location general managers to get involved in creating burgers.”

which are one of our most famous features,” Costas says. “They are hand-battered fried pickles served with our own special zesty ranch. It has a nice pickle tang to it.”

Costas adds that Burgerhaus’ Point Loma Carne Asada Fries are also popular. They are made with melted Cheddar and marinated Carne Asada steak.

“These loaded fries also have our ‘Haus’made guacamole, jalapeño sour cream, Pico de Gallo and cilantro,” he says.

auren Hughes is suddenly finding herself in a world full of gowns, sparkles, glitz and glamour. The beauty has all the makings of a pageant queen. She’s tall, fit and trim, she has long, beautiful chestnut flowing hair and perfect makeup. But as glamorous as she is, it’s obvious after spending just a few moments with her that she’s much more than ball gowns and crowns.

Hughes, a Carmel resident, didn’t grow up being involved in pageants all her life. She actually stumbled onto it one day after she and her family moved to Indiana. Born and raised near Toledo, Ohio, Hughes left the Buckeye state to go to school at Arizona State University. She went to school, met her husband there, they started their family and stayed 15 years. They moved back to the Midwest when her job as a Client Relations Manager brought her here. Her husband’s job also fell into place in Indiana.

A very social person, Hughes was eager to meet people. Since she was a cheerleader

when she was a child, she had the idea to try out to become an Indianapolis Colts Cheerleader. During the audition process, she noticed articles on the bulletin board about women in pageants. She decided to give it a closer look. After doing her research, she found Mrs. Indiana America, and that’s where she started.

She found that the pageants truly celebrate married women and their accomplishments personally and professionally. She also noticed that a big platform of the pageant was community service. That’s how she got connected with the American Heart Association (AHA).

“It’s a cause that’s near and dear to my heart,” Hughes says. “My family, on both sides, has a history of heart disease, including my mom and dad.”

She volunteers at many of the AHA events, and she serves as a Social Media Ambassador.

Indiana International. Through that pageant, she went through personal interviews, a swimsuit competition, an evening gown competition, and on-stage interviews. From there, she entered the Mrs. International competition, promoting her platform of heart health and healthy living.

“Both the Mrs. America and Mrs. International pageants promote and empower women’s interests,” Hughes says.

“I’ve been blessed to meet so many positive women who’ve become my closest friends.

It’s about more than just competition. We support and encourage one another. I’m honored to be part of it.”

One thing stands out about the Mrs. International competition, and that’s how the pageant incorporates family. The system promotes married women and their accomplishments, and through that, it celebrates the commitment to family and marriage. The competition’s website emphasizes how the pageant gives the women the opportunity to work with their husbands and families to become positive

Even more meaningful is how husbands are included in part of the show. They proudly escort their wives on to the stage during the evening gown competition. The winner of the title makes her husband the lucky winner too because he gets to crown his wife. The Mrs. International Pageant takes place the week of July 15 in Charleston, West Virginia, at the West Virginia Culture Center and State Museum Center. During the week, Hughes will have the opportunity to meet more than 70 women from over 12 countries and learn all about their culture and customs. Contestants will go through interviews, a fitness wear competition, do an opening number and the evening gown competition. The ladies will also attend a tea at the governor’s mansion where they

The preparations will have Hughes busy all the way up until the July pageant. She’ll continue to work as a Client Relations Manager and continue her work for the AHA. She’ll be making platform videos and platform handouts that incorporate her message of heart health too.

Whether she wins or not, Hughes is committed to continuing her work with the AHA. “After that year, I’ll stay part of the group, going around the circuit doing speaking engagements encouraging people to take control of their heart health, learn CPR and volunteer,” she says.

The Carmel High School boys basketball team had already put together a historic season by the time they finished their 2018–2019 regular season schedule.

The team compiled the best record in school history with only one loss, thanks to consistent performances from senior leaders and underclassmen alike. Add a state championship into the mix - the fourth in the school’s history - and you have a truly special season that head coach Ryan Osborn says resulted from contributions by every single player on the roster.

“We were confident going into the postseason, and we knew a state championship could be in sight, but we tried to stay focused on each game and each practice,” Osborn says.

13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the championship game. “I’ll really miss having the Carmel name on my chest, but it was special to finish the season this way with this group of guys.”

On March 23 the Greyhounds defeated Ben Davis 60-55 to secure the IHSAA 4A state title, and Osborn says the win came from a balanced effort from all players including seniors John-Michael Mulloy, a Butler signee, and Luke Heady, the son of previous Greyhounds coach Scott Heady, who will go on to play at Marian University.

Carmel never trailed during the championship game, and freshman Pete Suder led in scoring with 14 points as well as seven rebounds, three assists and three steals.

“It’s indescribable,” says Mulloy, who put up 22 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / MAY 2019 / atCarmel.com

“Mulloy was great, and Luke has a calmness about him and keeps his composure no matter what,” Osborn says. “He was our best defender down the stretch and really held us together. Andrew Owens had some big

plays. Everybody stepped up, from starters to guys off the bench being productive in limited minutes.”

Carmel overcame Fort Wayne Northrop and Zionsville at regionals, and Penn at semi-state en route to the title game at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

“We focused all season on defensive stops, rebounds and holding the other teams to under 40 percent field goal shooting,” Mulloy says. “Doing the little things that aren’t on the score sheet I think made the difference this season, and we really put in a lot of hard work to earn it.”

Osborn says losing last year in the state title game 54-48 to Warren Central provided some fuel for his team’s competitive fire.

“We brought back some key returning players that were seniors this year, who had a bad taste in their mouth from losing that game last year,” he says. “More than anything I think that gave them a certain level of focus, and they were able to use the run from last year as a building block to build some confidence.”

After six seasons as an assistant, Osborn took the head coaching reins in 2017 from Heady, who currently coaches at Marian.

Carmel went 131-25 during Osborn’s tenure as assistant coach, with state titles in 2012 and 2013 as well as four conference titles.

“We’ve tried to hang our hats on the defensive end, and that was the case when Scott was here,” Osborn says. “Scott and I worked well together and had the same basic philosophies of stressing defense and smart play with limited turnovers. When I had the opportunity to be the head coach there wasn’t much that I wanted to change, and the kids continue to buy into our system. That’s the most important thing — you can preach whatever you want, but if the kids don’t buy into it you’re going to have a hard time moving forward.”

After graduating from Logansport in 1999, Osborn played ball at IUPUI, subsequently taking on the role of director of basketball operations there from 2004 to 2006. After

six years as an assistant coach at Avon High School, he joined the Greyhounds as assistant under Heady in 2012.

“In the last 10 games of the year we held our opponents to 35 percent shooting from the floor, and we averaged around nine turnovers a game with the goal of keeping it under 10,” Osborn adds. “Even during the regular season it was never about winning this or that game. It was important to take it a day at a time, practice included. I think that prepares you for the postseason and those big games.”

Despite losing several senior team leaders, Osborn is confident the Greyhounds will be ready to compete at a high level again next season.

Amy Long, co-owner of the Fork + Ale House, 350 Veterans Way, Carmel, says guests have thoroughly enjoyed the wide range of choices available at the brand new restaurant.

“Everything is all on one menu,” Long says.

“It’s the same for lunch and dinner, and we have a wide variety of food.”

Long has some personal Fork + Ale House favorites from a few of their menu categories, which include their Sharables.

The Sharables feature items such as Ale House Dough Balls, Fork Fries and Double-Layered Nachos.

“I also love our Pizzas and Calzones,” Long says. “These are all made with premium toppings. Our hand-tossed dough is made fresh in the Ale House daily as well as our Ale House pizza sauce and our signature cheese blend.”

Fork + Ale House also features delicious sandwiches.

“There are many classic sandwiches in this section, as well as a few unique items, such as our piadina and our tender braised beef sandwich,” Long says. “ Of course, a definite highlight to our menu is all-natural handpattied burgers.”

Fork + Ale House also offers Sunday Brunch.

“It is available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sundays,” Long says. “We also offer a brunch menu, along with our normal menu. Our brunch menu will have seven to eight brunch offerings such as the Rise and Shine Calzone and the 3-Amigos Breakfast

Tacos. We will also be serving $5 mimosas, bromosas and bloody Mary’s on Sundays.”

Fork + Ale House opened with four inhouse brews — Beehive Blonde, Wicked 7 Wheat, Winking Cedar Brown Ale and Hopping Hound IPA. “We will be brewing seasonal rotators once we are able to ramp up the production of what we will need for our four in-house brews,” Long says. “We have worked with a few mixologists from around the country and have developed a well-rounded cocktail and wine offering. We will have 14 hand-

crafted cocktails on our drink menu, too.”

Long adds that their highlight is the Fork + Ale Signature Cocktail.

“It is a barrel-aged cocktail that my bar manager and I have developed together,” Long says. “Some other highlights include our Smoked Pequena Colada. We have incorporated our smoked pineapple from our in-house smoker into this drink, and it adds another dimension to it. And topping our cocktails off will be our frozen drink machines. In the other drink machine, will be another adult slushie that we will rotate every six to eight weeks.

The opening of Fork + Ale House has been quite a family affair for the Longs.

“We have five children ranging in ages from four to 17,” Long says. “They have helped us with everything from product testing to unloading orders, to visiting the site.
