“It’s comfort clothing in a comfortable place, not an intimidating lingerie store!” If you’ve ever traveled to Carmel to shop at PillowTalk, you will be glad to know a second location of the lingerie boutique is now open in Broad Ripple across from the fire station. “We are really excited to be part of Broad Ripple,” says owner Kimberly Earlewine. “We just love it here.” The new store reflects the same artistic, hip vibe of the Broad Ripple neighborhood with floral wall paper and lingerie that hangs from racks made out of white birch tree branches hanging from the ceiling. Earlewine has decorated the store with repurposed furniture including an antique luggage cart from the 1800s in the center of the store to hold candle displays and other accessories. “It’s comfort clothing in a comfortable place,” says Kim. “This is not an intimidating lingerie store!” PillowTalk is based on the simple ideal that it’s important to feel good from the skin out! They offer high-end lingerie from Betsy Johnson, Blush, Cosabella, Steve Madden, Eberjey and Fleur‘t with me. And at the end of your day, you can relax in the organic cotton lounge wear they offer at PillowTalk. For pregnant and nursing mothers, they too can feel great about their bodies with Cake Lingerie maternity and nursing intimates. The lingerie ranges in price from about $10 to $119 in Broad Ripple. PillowTalk is the first retail adventure for the 34-year-old Fort Wayne native who now lives in Noblesville. As a single mom of one daughter (not to mention a couple of dogs and a horse), Earlewine wanted the challenge of her own business but the flexibility she needed as a mom. She purchased the existing Carmel PillowTalk in May 2013 and opened the Broad Ripple store this past September with a total of four employees. She plans to open more PillowTalk boutiques over the next few years. PillowTalk is available for private parties where wine and snacks are provided and guests enjoy discounted shopping. PillowTalk is also a dog friendly spot where you may see a bowl of water for your pets outside the Broad Ripple boutique on a hot summer day. Birgit was inspired by her journey with ovarian cancer during which she folded 1,000 swans. Owner Chuck Mack will tell you that he wants Moe & Johnny’s to be a friendly neighborhood restaurant, the kind of place where patrons know they can get a tasty, reasonably priced meal in an atmosphere that’s as quiet or loud as they want. What he wants is what he has – the food is pleasing, the portion sizes solid and the prices are right. As for the atmosphere, you couldn’t ask for more. If you want a sports bar with 20-plus TVs, it’s there. A seating area with tables? It’s there. And if you want to eat in peace, you have the option to dine in their softly lit, nearly silent coffee shop. Moe & Johnny’s has been a Butler University fan hangout for 20 years now— and it was the Bulldog Lounge for 20 years before that. So the public knows it primarily as a sports bar. But there’s more to it than bar food. Manager George Hoyt takes the menu seriously, and what he delivers is a cut above bar food with many nice surprises along the way. We sat in the coffee shop and started with a flavorful plate of dill and garlic hummus that came with warm pita bread and a selection of fresh, crisp cucumber, carrots and celery. That’s one of 14 appetizers on the menu, and it’s easily enough for a meal for one. For the main course, we split a garden
burger and an order of ribs, both excellent. The garden burger is one of Hoyt’s specialties—a combination of smoked and dry quinoa, peppers, egg whites and spices—and it came with a side of asparagus. (How many bars serve asparagus?) The ribs are steamed until the meat falls off the bone and coated lightly in a spectacular homemade chipotle barbecue sauce that is both sweet and spicy. They’re served with fries and slaw. The five-page menu includes a wide variety of soups, salads, sandwiches, burgers, chicken and pizza. Almost everything is in the $8-$15 range. We finished with an ice cream sandwich consisting of two fresh chocolate chip cookies with a slice of refreshing vanilla bean ice cream inside— a nice, comfortable way to end a nice, comfortable meal.

Both Faye and Ballantine have been known around town for ages and share a love of roots-Americana music. Some refer to Andra Faye and Scott Ballantine met years ago when their style as “acoustic blues.” Ballantine plays guitar with the Faye acquired her first guitar from then shop-owner and dexterity of a seasoned veteran, while Faye’s strong vocals and musician, Ballantine. Faye recalls taking a couple lessons from amazing string skillset compliment one another beautifully. Ballantine at that time and kept in touch over the years. Their Faye also plays the electric and upright bass, mandolin, paths would cross occasionally, but it would not be until early violin/fiddle and guitar. 2012 when they got together as a duo. Ballantine noticed on Facebook that Faye had moved back to town and invited her Listening to the two perform together, you feel as though over to play. They immediately got along musically and now they have both come home. Their performances are so are wrapping up their second CD. perfectly in sync; it is like they are family. Back in the 1970s, Scott opened the much-loved Guitar Shop on Broad Ripple Avenue. The guitar and music shop was the first in a series Ballantine owned. He was also known for his musical group, The Strugglers, a popular mainstay band throughout the ‘70s and ‘80s. The Strugglers were the house band at the Hummingbird Cafe. Faye would attend Strugglers’ performances and would sit in with them occasionally, but the timing was not yet right for the two of them musically. Faye left Indianapolis for Virginia to join Saffire – the Uppity Blues Women. She would be a part of this group for 17 years until the band retired. Faye was nominated twice for Blues Music Awards during her tenure with Saffire. Having traveled all over the world to places such as South Africa, New Zealand, Europe and South America, it was time to come home. In 2013, she graced the cover of Mandolin Magazine, calling her the “First Lady of the Blues Mandolin.” Moving back a few years ago to help take care of her 93-year-old mom, Faye was getting back into the local music scene when Ballantine contacted her on Facebook.
They released their first CD project in 2013, Laying Down Our Blues, to great acclaim with the greatest national praise coming from Blues Music Magazine. They have begun work on their second recording, planning a release for late 2014. They play and teach regularly in Indianapolis, and also tour and teach workshops across the country, including a music camp in Bar Harbor, Maine, every summer for the past three years. The two enjoy performing everywhere, but their favorite venues are house concerts. House concerts provide an intimate setting; the attendees pay a lot of attention and are quiet, which is a change from restaurants and loud bars. This grassroots means of getting music to local folks came about by people who grew out of the smoky bar scene but still want to enjoy music. has added a second location that has a unique feature; the additional shop is on wheels. Owner Kelly Wooten Riley bought the Girly Chic Boutique three years ago with the intent to enhance its exposure by opening a mobile boutique. “We converted a post office truck into our mobile boutique, and it has been quite fun!” Riley says. The fashion truck enables the boutique to come to clients for private parties or special events. Girly Chic Boutique hosts private and charity events from its Broad Ripple store frequently, and Haute Wheels, as the truck is known, allows the literal mobility. Complete with a dressing room, the interior of Haute Wheels mirrors the store, down to the flooring. The interior design is complementary to the boutique. Haute Wheels participates in the First Friday food truck festivals downtown at the Old National Center, which will host the last one of the season on Friday, Oct. 3. There are about seven other fashion trucks around the city, so the trend is catching on. “Attending events such as First Friday is a fun experience for us,” Riley says. “Having them all in one spot has a market feel to it.” Opened in 2003, Girly Chic has slowly evolved its brands and wares. “We carry a lot of higher end brands with a focus on quality pieces at a good price point,” Riley says. And indeed, most of the store is priced less than $100. The selection has expanded from women’s apparel to including baby and little girl clothing, teen and gift items. The accessories and fragrances have become quite popular as well. Ambre Blends is a best-selling item. The jewelry selection is also impressive with Riley sharing that she buys from the same suppliers for Anthropology and J.Crew. Girly Chic offers free styling for its frequent customers. This personal attention makes shopping for items easier for upcoming seasonal trends. Riley grew up in Indianapolis, is a Cathedral grad and currently resides in Carmel. She bought the store when she had her daughter to be able to spend more time with her, making a career change from her corporate position. Girly Chic is Riley’s outlet for her love of shopping. She loves fashion and has fun with the store and the mobile boutique. Girly Chic moved to its current location in 2007 between the Bungalow and the Monon Coffee shop. The area is evolving with the addition of a juice bar down the street, as well as a Runner’s Forum, which took over the corner space that was formerly Chelsea’s. Shoptiques, an exclusive online resource for showcasing the best places to shop in the world, has highlighted Girly Chic Boutique as a favorite stop for the world shopper. At 9 a.m. on Tanksgiving morning before helping themselves to their Tanksgiving meal, 18,000 Hoosiers and their families will serve others frst by participating in the 12th annual Drumstick Dash.

CIRCLE OF LIGHTS® A DOWNTOWN TRADITION

Magic and excitement will again permeate the air around Monument Circle, during one of Central Indiana’s most treasured holiday traditions, the Circle of Lights. Presented by Quality Connection and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) #481, the 52nd Circle of Lights will kick of the holiday season, starting at 6 p.m. Friday, November 28, with a free family-oriented celebration. From the Friday evening afer Tanksgiving until early January, millions of spectators will take in the brilliant displays around Monument Circle. In the middle stands the centerpiece, a 284 foot Christmas tree, standing lit as a symbol of peace and brotherhood. Every year I have stood in awe of that, and I have prayed a prayer of thanks for the teams of individuals who have contributed their time to give such joy. I’d like to tell you what just a small percentage of individuals have done behind the scenes for the Circle of Lights. Decorations on the Monument have been a holiday tradition since 1945. World War II
had just ended, and Christmas was nearing. Indianapolis architect Edward D. Pierre envisioned the Monument lit up in lights and decorations, standing as a symbol of peace and brotherhood. For the next 17 years, Christmas trees, giant candles and small toy maker shops brightened the Circle’s base, while elegant banners with phrases such as “Peace on Earth Good Will, Toward Men” clung to the Monument’s botom section. It wasn’t until 1962 Pierre’s vision of lights strung from the top of the Monument to its base became a reality. As I have mentioned, many people and organizations have played a role in designing, fabricating, installing and implementing the celebration décor. Initially, a group called the Indianapolis Christmas Commitee, or the Indianapolis Holidays Commitee, started the mission of what today is called the Circle of Lights. Tis mission today is the responsibility of Downtown Indy, Inc. Te union electricians of IBEW #481 have always been the organization to install and remove the décor. Two hundred of these volunteer electricians utilize more than six miles of electrical wire, 52 garland strands and 4,784 lights to produce Indiana’s
holiday centerpiece. In a chat with Julia Saltsgaver, Quality Connection Executive Director, she told me the electricians work one strand at a time hoisting up the most northern strand frst. Ten the most southern strand goes next. Te project continues with this north-tosouth rotation going in a counter-clockwise direction until completed. By handling the strands in this manner, great care is taken to protect the structure and integrity of the Indiana Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument in the transformation process. “Te contractors of Quality Connection and the IBEW #481 electrical workers are thrilled to provide their talent and skill to make sure that the Circle of Lights brings holiday joy for everyone,” Saltsgaver said. For the third year in a row, the nine member band from Mount Pleasant Christian Church, led by Brian Tabor, has been selected as the house band. Based out of Greenwood, the group will rock the night away with Christmas tunes in a variety of styles, including R&B, pop and classic rock.

Additionally, professional performers appearing at the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra’s IPL Yuletide Celebration will take the stage. It’s going to be a spectacular show!”

Every Honor Flight is amazing, and the October 18 flight was unique in that of the 70 guardians, 58 were Indianapolis Fire Department personnel. The idea was pitched by IFD firefighter David Harman who went on an Honor Flight last April as a Guardian. He loved the experience and discovered when he volunteered at a Burn Camp for Kids that other major city fire departments provide guardians regularly for Honor Flights. The response from IFD was overwhelmingly positive.
The evening before the trip, the veterans and their guardians have a meet and greet where they are treated to dinner while being entertained by a band playing music from the 1940s. The coordinator for the Honor Flight addresses the crowd with the basics for the traveling, and some special guests were on hand to offer their gratitude for their service. IFD Chief Ernest Malone shook hands with the veterans and announced that with all the strong hand shakes around the room that “the department was hiring.”
An Honor Flight is a special day trip for World War II, Korean War and Vietnam veterans to visit their monuments in our nation’s capital. The veterans are also driven by the Pentagon, Air Force Monument, the Marines statue from Iwo Jima and taken to Arlington Cemetery to watch the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Not only were the Guardians from

WWII MERCHANT MARINE / RETIRED IFD DEPUTY CHIEF DON BOLLINGER Retired IFD Deputy Chief and WWII veteran Don Bollinger dropped out of Arsenal Tech High School to join the Army at age 17. He passed the stringent physical; however, during boot camp at Fort Grant in Illinois, he collapsed mid-way through a 10 mile hike. “I woke up in the infirmary and was told I had a hole in my heart,” said Bollinger. “So I received an honorable discharge.” Bollinger went home and got a second medical opinion. He had a heart murmur, not an actual “hole” in his heart. Assured that he wasn’t dying, Bollinger forged a plan to head out west to California. He saw an ad in the Indianapolis News that a ‘42 Pontiac Club Coupe needed to be driven to Huntington Park, Calif. Bollinger forged a document to show that he was older than he really was and drove out to California. Once he arrived, he got a job as a fry cook at an open-all-night greasy spoon called Frank’s Restaurant. One night, Bollinger served a group of Merchant Marines who told him they needed men desperately. There were ships waiting in the harbor loaded with supplies for the war effort and no crew since the draft was taking every able-bodied man. Bollinger may have omitted certain details from his medical form, and the physical was far less detailed than the Army experience. In April of 1943, Bollinger became a Merchant Marine. Bollinger took a total of five deployments with the Merchant
Marines. Four of those were to the Pacific Ocean theater, and one was to Liverpool, England, delivering fuel and supplies. When the end of the war was announced, Bollinger was serving on a tanker. They were anchored in the harbor at Ulithi in the Caroline Islands on Aug. 14, 1945. He arrived back to the U.S. on Sept. 28, docking in New York City. “It’s a day I will never forget,” said Bollinger. "The piers were lined with people holding ‘Welcome Home Soldier’ signs, and whistles and horns were blowing. I was mighty proud to be an American.” Upon returning home to Indianapolis, Don reunited with his girlfriend, Shirley. The two were married in November of 1945. It was two years later that Bollinger joined the fire department. “I spent 33 years and eight months with IFD,” says Bollinger. The highest rank he held was that of Deputy Chief. His guardian for the Honor Flight was IFD Engineer Mike Finnigan. Finnigan was born at Fort Benjamin Harrison. Finnigan’s father, Army Major Donald C. Finnigan, along with his mom and his sister are buried at Arlington National Cemetery. “Their gravesite is a bit far from where we had our tour, but I pointed it out to Don as we drove by to wave at them,” said Finnigan.

WWII NAVY VETERAN / RETIRED IFD LT. HAROLD PLUMBER WWII Navy veteran and retired IFD Lt. Harold Plumber enlisted when he was 17. A Tech High School student, he was about to embark on a world tour of a lifetime. Having trained as a gunner on a 20mm anti-aircraft gun, Plumber set sail July 4, 1944, from Pier 92 in New York City and cruised through the Panama Canal for Australia. His ship, the USS LST-910, unloaded supplies in New Guinea and sailed north for Asia. The crew of the USS LST-910 saw action in Leyte at the Battle of Surigao, as well as Luzon and at Manila Bay. Plumber’s ship was part of the consolidation and capture of the Southern Philippines from March to May 1945 and served during the Borneo operation. “I served two years, two months and 22 days in the Navy,” recalls Plumber. “It was quite an experience for a 17-year-old boy who had never been further than Fort Wayne.” Plumber shared with me that he has spoken more about his WWII experience in the days surrounding the Honor Flight than he has cumulatively since 1945. “I didn’t like what I saw, but I had a job to do and didn’t want to talk about it,” said Plumber. After the war, Plumber worked for a Naval Avionics subcontractor before joining the Indianapolis Fire Department. For 38 and a half years, Plumber “couldn’t wait to go to work” with IFD. He loved his job and the people he worked with. On the Honor Flight, his guardian was Timothy Smith, Deputy Fire Marshal with IFD. “I saw Tim get out of his car in our driveway, and I just smiled, thinking ‘I know that boy,’” shared Plumber.

The Honor Flight turned out to be beyond imagination for Plumber. “It was fabulous. I couldn’t have dreamed the reception we got everywhere we went," said Plumber. "My faith in humanity is restored.” Adoring, grateful crowds greeted the veterans at all the stops. Smith, who’s dad was a WWII veteran, wanted to be a guardian on an Honor Flight to honor the memory of his dad, Jack W. Smith, who was the recipient of the Purple Heart 49 years after serving. “My dad never spoke of his WWII experience. Then in 1993, he called me to tell me he was awarded the Purple Heart,” said Smith. Smith’s dad, Jack, served in the Marines during WWII and was an Army Paratrooper during the Korean War. During WWII, Jack was injured but refused to leave his unit, so he was treated at the field hospital. The hospital scribe went on to become a Colonel in the Army and filed for the Purple Heart on behalf of Jack Smith in the late ‘80s before he retired. “This award meant a lot to my dad and to me and my brothers who never knew about his injury,” stated Smith. The last stop on the whirlwind day was witnessing the changing of the guards at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. “‘Taps’ gets me every time,” said Plumber. Bollinger was humbled by driving through Arlington National Cemetery.

“The number of perfectly-aligned grave markers is unbelievable,” said Bollinger. “I just can’t believe how many have died for our country, and I am one of the lucky ones.” Just when they thought the day couldn’t get any better, when exhaustion is creeping over them and they’re still floating on adrenaline from the excitement of the day, the homecoming back to Indianapolis tipped it for these veterans. Greeted by thousands of friends and family was the icing on the cake for these selfless men who served our country. Gov. Mike Pence and his wife were also among the well-wishers at Plainfield High School. “I felt like I was really something!" said Bollinger. "The governor even shook my hand!” The event was emotional not just for the veterans. “As I edit all of the photos, I see the bonds formed over the span of the day and and previous evening,” said Mark L. Kidd, photographer for the Honor Flight. "I’ve seen vets grow out of shyness, turn from sickly to vibrant, from stand-offish to
embracing. It’s a beautiful experience for all of us. I do their mug shots when they come in on Friday, and they’re usually a foot away from their guardians, or the guardians are standing next to the vets’ wheelchairs. Twenty-eight hours later, I do portraits while waiting to board, and they have arms around each other, heads touching. The guardians are kneeling next to the vets in their chairs. It’s amazing. One of our biggest criers this time was also the biggest firefighter. Simply beautiful. I can usually make it home to edit before I start crying. This time the most indelible moment came when a vet rasped into my ear, ‘I am having the time of my life,’ and it was only 11 a.m.” To volunteer or apply for the Honor Flight, visit indyhonorflight.org. road Ripple has been a quaint go-to hub for music lovers for decades. The attraction of the pubs, bars and the bands that perform here weekly, if not daily, have always been a draw.
And what hip village would be complete without a cool guitar shop? About Music is one gem of a guitar store. However, it is much more than that. It has become a symbiotic part of the community. Nestled discretely along College Avenue, About Music has evolved from a guitar shop into a community music shop where you can find strings, reeds, brass or wind instruments and many other accessories. Used and new instruments including auto harps, classic organs, upright bass, violins and of course, guitars cover the walls. I even spotted a piano in a corner. Indy native Robert Norwood has owned About Music for over 18 years. He’s like the cool dad of your best friend growing up. Teaching guitar lessons, he’s laidback, easygoing, and I can easily imagine him with this shop on a side street in the Village in New York City, but fortunately it’s here in our village. When asked if anything has changed over the years with music and technology, Norwood says that apps, such as ones that assist with ear training, have improved productivity and interface beautifully with lessons. “Technology has the ability to improve the environment of individual instruction and aides in helping speed up the learning process,” Norwood said. This was pleasantly surprising to hear how he welcomes whatever helps the students he teaches. The more I talk to him, the more I realize how he’s a perfect fit into the artistic fabric of Broad Ripple. A renaissance man who lives in the moment, he is always busy. The shop is easily a reflection of the proprietor. There is an eclectic selection of just about everything musical you can think of, which is part of the charm. It’s like walking into your grandfather’s attic, knowing there are undiscovered treasures to find and you just have to look. Celebrity clientele love About Music because it is a comfortable space. WWII ROUNDTABLE PRESERVING INDIANA’S MILITARY HISTORY

The Ernie Pyle Chapter of the World War II Roundtable was founded in 1987 by Bob Currie and Wilbert Watson. Currie and Watson were members of The Civil War RoundTable, comprised of history buffs and historians that met to discuss the Civil War. Being 122 years after the event, all information was written history. Both men were interested in World War II and decided that they should start a new round table to “continue the oral history and legacy of the WWII veterans.”
Since that time, the Indianapolis chapter of the Ernie Pyle WWII RoundTable has grown to become one of the most active in the state. Monthly meetings provide a forum for speakers relevant to veterans, with an emphasis on preserving the military history of those who served. Special guest Lt. Col. Richard E. Cole spoke to a sold-out house on October 21. Cole served as General Doolittle’s co-pilot during the famous raid over Tokyo on April 18, 1942. Now 99 years old, Cole is one of four Doolittle Raiders still living. He shared

his journey leading up to the raid and his amazing experience afterward. Moderator Brian Anderson led a fireside chat with Cole, covering the highlights and details of the incredible Tokyo Raid mission. Upon volunteering for the mission, it wasn’t until the second day at sea after leaving San Francisco that the details of their mission were announced. According to Cole, the reaction of the crew was “jubilation, but then a silence fell over the ship with the reality of the gravity of their objective.”

What is amazing is that all 16 specially-calibrated B-25 bombers flew off successfully from the deck of the USS Hornet. “The B-25 typically requires 3,320 feet of runway. We had to use 498,� said Cole. The raid was a success in that all 80 men survived the mission. In the aftermath, several were captured, three were executed by the Japanese and one died while in a prison camp. The remaining 76 survived. Upon jettisoning their aircraft, Cole became separated from the rest of his crew, landing in a pine tree, where he spent the night. Due to the blackness of night, he did not realize until the dawn that he was only 12 feet above the ground. The success of this mission could not have occurred at a more critical time for a U.S. morale boost. A few of the men from the Tokyo Raid were flown home to work the War Bond circuit, while most of the men stayed in Asia to serve in the China-Burma-India Theater. Several books have been written about the Raid, and the book, _30 Seconds Over Tokyo_, by Capt. Ted W. Lawson, Doolittle Raider, became a blockbuster movie.
