TEACHER KATHRYN LERCH LEADS THE LEGACY INITIATIVE AT PARK TUDOR Writer / Kara Reibel

The moment Park Tudor’s Social Studies Chair Kathryn Lerch realized she loved history was in elementary school while reading a book about the early pioneers. A few years later, her last great-grandparent passed away, leaving more than 115 letters from a Civil War soldier in the attic of the 1830 homestead in New York State. Years later, she would find an additional 250 letters to add to a collection of letters for this individual’s regiment.

“The initial letters led to my senior paper, ‘A Northern Soldier’s Life in the Civil War,’” Lerch said. She went on to major in history

and foreign languages in college. Moving to Indianapolis in 1971, Lerch was a volunteer German teacher at Shortridge High School until taking time off to raise her two children, both of whom graduated from Park Tudor (PT).

As part of her freshman world civilizations history course, students are asked to interview a military veteran or civilian with wartime experiences. “I live a fairly sheltered life,” said sophomore Rachel Thomas, who is part of the Legacy Initiative. “I am so grateful for our military and now have a far deeper appreciation for those that have served.”

Her sentiment is echoed by the entire student committee comprising the Legacy Initiative Project.

Over the last 13 years, PT students have collected more than 700 oral histories of veterans and civilians who served in support of our country. The gathering of these oral histories has been an important component of the Legacy Initiative Project.

This committee of approximately a dozen students have compiled the materials from

the interviews, organizing many of the recorded interviews into six anthologies entitled: “Words Of War (Volumes 1-6).”

The Civil War through current U.S. military operations is covered in these books with Volume 7 currently in production.

The Legacy Initiative is hands-on history through research and writing, which is greatly impacting the students involved.

During the last 15 years, hundreds of students have been involved in interviews and more than 100 students have served on the extra-curricular Legacy Initiative Project. Through these interviews and working with original resources, minds are expanded, connections are made and

worlds are opened. What began as a simple assignment for a freshman world history class has grown into something special: recording history and recognizing those who have been affected by war.

The books may be purchased through the PT School Admissions Office. This project always welcomes suggestions of veterans to interview as well as contributions of copies of unpublished wartime letters, diaries or reminiscences. For suggestions, email klerch@parktudor.org or call 317-415-2700.

Lerch wrote a history of the 8th New York Heavy Artillery Regiment (1862-1865). This manuscript is awaiting publication.

Longing to be more closely involved with racing, the price tag to do so was rather high until fate intervened. The Indy Racing League was formed in 1996 following the split from CART, allowing a window of opportunity for Treadway to start a race team with legendary racer Arie Luyendyk as his driver. This gave Sabatini a chance to join the team and live out his dream.

And while not currently involved with a race team, Sabatini continues to spend time at the track. Last year he worked with Indy 500 event coordinators to help handle green room and prerace logistics. “LeAnn Rimes, Ice Tea and Coco, Mark Cuban and Andrew Luck all made appearances before the race, and I was fortunate enough to get to help with the coordination,” says Sabatini.

Prior to moving to Indianapolis in 1989, Sabatini was the food and beverage director for Ditka’s Restaurant in Chicago when the Bears won the Super Bowl. “Being around an event like that is similar to being in the Winner’s Circle at the Indy 500,” says Sabatini. “It’s a different kind of exhilaration.”

“I have dedicated my life to racing and to my businesses,” confesses Sabatini. However, there is more than owning a bar and racing that fuels him. Sabatini’s other passion lies in DJing.

“Ever since ‘Saturday Night Fever’ was big in the 70s, I have been a DJ. I was a DJ before it was cool to be one. When I moved to Indy, no one would hire me to DJ, so I had to open my own bars to DJ in,” laughs Sabatini. He has been a fixture in both the Mineshaft Saloon and Rock Lobster DJ booths since opening and continues be the DJ at Rock Lobster every Friday and Saturday night starting at 10 p.m.

Sabatini is as invested in Broad Ripple as anyone could be. Owning three bars, a convenience store (Rock and a Hard Place General Store right next to Rock Lobster), Sabatini covers all aspects of being a true Broad Ripple villager. He also owns a home in Broad Ripple, is a landlord for two Broad Ripple rental homes, and built and sold the former Canal Point Grill, currently Flatwater. He is a director on the Broad Ripple Village Association and serves as its Public Safety Chairman.

“I can’t say enough about Fred Treadway. We were partners for 16 years,” shares Sabatini. “He believed in me and in my dreams.”

INDY HOSTEL OFFERS MORE THAN JUST A ROOM Writer / Joshua Deisler

It began as just an idea. John Newton, owner of Indy Hostel, and a friend sat discussing future business plans. They both knew how to fix houses, so they talked about remodeling and renting properties when a second thought came to their minds. This idea quickly flourished into more than a simple business.

Having traveled to France and Spain, Newton remembered staying in hostels and how each had its own personality. “They’re all very unique, and that makes them that much more of an adventure,” he says.

In 2003, after buying and remodeling a house on Winthrop Avenue and 49th Street, Newton opened the Indy Hostel in the spring of 2004. Encompassing two houses and a common area, the Indy Hostel can sleep about 40-50 people and offers a kitchen, bike rentals, laundry and help chauffeuring travelers from the airport and bus station.

About half of its guests are international travelers, but the Indy Hostel also welcomes backpackers, families and bikers. The busiest time of the year revolves around Indy conventions and events.

“Indy is a cool town. We just kind of help people see that when they travel here,” says Newton. He is adamant that the Hostel owes its starred reviews to their dedicated staff.

But the Hostel is more than just a place to stay. The grounds are home to art shows, yoga, local bands, poetry readings and storytelling. The Hostel even holds weddings and other celebrations, and employees help with planning, hosting and cleaning. In fact, Newton held his own wedding reception there, hosting his family and friends overnight at the hostel.

“August is a marathon in general. During the summertime, the house is just alive with people,” says Manager Paul Humes. “The people themselves are kind of the acts here. There are popup shows all the time.”

Humes has traveled much of the globe. After serving in the Air Force, the Peace Corps, studying abroad and backpacking, he found himself back in Indy, soon at the Indy Hostel as a hiking leader and then as the manager.

“I think I will always feel the warmth in the summers when I can work from the back porch with my shoes off and just think, ‘This is my job,’” says Humes.

the Festival is sponsored by many local businesses and features food and drinks from local venues. For days throughout August, guitars, violins, accordions, harmonicas and comedy acts dominate the two stages at the Indy Hostel.

Welcoming everyone is what this place is about. To the staff, it’s about supporting a Japanese athlete aiming to run seven marathons on seven continents. It’s about showing a family the Children’s Museum or helping an Australian farmer find his way home.

Even more, Newton values an important lesson that staying in hostels taught him. “Many walls that divide people don’t happen at hostels,” he says.

Perhaps that’s what makes the Indy Hostel so special. It’s a welcoming place that defies walls of nationality, faith and even language. A place where walls unite travelers as they share their stories and artists as they play their songs. A place that’s Indy at its heart.

KIDS TRI FOR KIDS: A TRIATHLON SERIES FOR KIDS!

Thanks to a special series of triathlons for children ages 7-14, these three beloved activities are combined for a fun fundraising athletic event series. Since 2008, Kids TRI for Kids has raised money for Indianapolis area kids’ charities such as Best Buddies.

The first triathlons for children were run by Ed Merkling, assistant director of the Natatorium at IUPUI. Merkling coaches the Jaguar Aquatics swim team in addition to running camps and programs for kids at the Natatorium. When the idea for Kids TRI for Kids was evolving, Merkling was immediately brought into the conversation.

With their first fundraising triathlon held at the Jordan YMCA in 2008, the popularity of the triathlon series immediately took off. This summer, the first two races had over 250 entries, a 20 percent increase over last year.

“Not every kid is an elite athlete, but what I love is seeing the kid with streamers flowing off the handles of their bike,” says Merkling. These kids know how to keep it fun.

With the May 22 grand opening of retailer Weekends Only, Indianapolisarea shoppers will have a new option for buying furniture. As its name implies, the St. Louis-based furniture and mattress store takes a unique approach by opening for business on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays (and special holidays) only.

Company President Lane Hamm says that the concept of weekendonly shopping came from analyzing customer traffic patterns at one of its original St. Louis-area stores.

Up to 80 percent of its business consistently transpired over the threeday weekend period. In an effort to decrease overhead and compete on price, management opted to limit store operations to weekend hours only and pass along the savings to its customers.

The family-owned retailer launched its first Weekends Only concept store in 1997 and grew to five area locations in less than 10 years. Expanding to the Indianapolis market made a lot of sense, says President Tom Phillips.

“We fell in love with the city. It has similar Midwest values, a stable, growing economy and great people.”

Do you have children in college renting off-campus housing that they’ll soon be vacating after the school year to return home, head to a summer job, travel or join the “real world” workforce? If you are on either side of this equation, it’s important to remember to protect your interest regarding the security deposit that was probably paid as part of the lease.

“Mom has always been extremely strong with the emotional handling of the tough stuff,” says Christie. “She is able to detach and do what needs to be done, working with and not against the emotional ties and stress involved with moving grandma and grandpa.”

The Broad Ripple Mom of the Year contest is a way to highlight all the wonderful moms in our community. It’s not about a competition between candidates so much as it is a great reason to focus on those who make a difference in the lives of their families.

All the applicants are exceptional mothers, but your votes have determined one worthy winner. The 2015 Broad Ripple Mom of the Year is Joan Snapp.

Joan and her siblings have lived all over the world. Their dad spent his career in the military. “The Army moved dad all over the place, including Holland and Germany,” says Joan, who moved to Indianapolis when she was 18 after living overseas most of her life.

Her father served two tours of duty in Vietnam, and after the global assignments, he spent the last part of his career with the Army Reserve unit at Fort Benjamin Harrison.

Christie Snapp, co-owner of the Indy Scene Real Estate Team at RE/MAX Ability Plus, nominated her mom because of her mom’s amazing commitment to her parents and family.

It was a challenge to get their parents to move, given the amount of downsizing that needed to occur. Having moved around to different countries, the family had amassed a collection of international treasures.

“I had to nominate my mom,” says Christie. “She has always been such an incredibly strong person, and the last couple of years, she has been through a lot.”

Joan Snapp moved back to Indianapolis to be closer to her family.

“After living in Bloomington where we raised our children, it was time to move to Indianapolis to not only be closer to our kids, but to take care of my parents,” shares Joan.

Being the oldest daughter, Joan took the lead role coordinating a big move for her parents. “My sisters and brother, as well as my kids, all helped,” says Joan. “It was a big job but well worth it.” Moving to Broad Ripple a few years ago, she wanted to help her parents in downsizing from their four bedroom home to a two bedroom bungalow next door. “The house next to ours was vacant and bankowned for years,” says Joan. “We were finally able to purchase it and update it to accommodate my mom and dad.”

Taking care of her aging parents is a priority of Joan’s, who commutes to her job in Bloomington. “When I moved north to Broad Ripple, my office was very accommodating, allowing me to work from home a few days a week and minimizing my commute to a couple days a week,” says Joan, who is the Controller for the Bloomington Monroe County Convention Center.

“Even though mom and dad are still living independently, it is an ideal transitional situation with them being in their 80s,” Joan says about being next door to help as their needs may increase over the coming years. “The transition was tough at first, but now mom and dad love living next door. We have them over for dinner a couple times a week. We refer to them as ‘the neighbors.’”

“I am grateful for receiving this acknowledgement, but I believe all moms are Moms of the Year. We do what we have to do for those we love,” says Joan.

“I love her and appreciate my mom so much, and witnessing what she has accomplished with my grandparents over the last couple of years is amazing. She is not only ‘Mom of the Year,’ she is ‘Daughter of the Year,’” states Christie.

The 70 veterans, the 70 guardians and the staff that made it all come true felt the love and compassion that only something this specia l can produce. Brewer Bradley Zimmerman casually asks for patience as he perfects their draft production system. Zimmerman has spent the last decade at the oldest brew pub in Seattle. A native Hoosier, Zimmerman has found his way home to continue his art at the Bent Rail. Besides, he possesses the requisite beard, so he must be legit.

“We have patrons that pop in on a weekly basis since we opened our doors, asking if we have our beer ready for tasting,” says Cari Crowe, director of sales and one of four managing partners with the Bent Rail.

“And we have to tell them ‘not yet.’”

Managing Partners Crowe, Zimmerman, Craig Baker and Derek Means set goals for their Bent Rail venture: a family-friendly atmosphere that’s not only the immediate neighborhood’s bar, but also a destination for those who aren’t in the neighborhood.

“We want to be this neighborhood’s bar and a good place for dinner or lunch,” says Crowe. “With our soft opening, we are able to introduce our food which is as carefully selected as our beer. We did not want to be a brewery where food is an after-thought.”

Aside from breads, every food item is homemade in their kitchen, including their salsa, hummus, guacamole and chicken salad. The menu focus of sandwiches, soups and salads appeals to the masses with many gluten-free options for those with sensitivities. Local seasonal produce and meats are featured as well, and they are working on curing their own meats.

Crowe is in a unique position of being only one of 13 people in the state of Indiana who is a certified Cicerone. Cicerone was created in response to the growing craft beer movement and influenced by the

Sommelier wine program. According to the program, “The Cicerone Certification Program certifies and educates beer professionals in order to elevate the beer experience for consumers.”

The Cicerone program focuses on the history, style, beer and food pairing, proper pouring, draft technology and proper maintenance of a draft system. “The one element I find most useful is being able to look at a beer list and being able to tell a patron what a beer is like without tasting it,” says Crowe.

Local World War II historian Dick Osborne is celebrating his seventh book on WWII-related events. His latest work, “The Axis: Hitler’s Allies, Who They Were, Why They Fought and Their Fate,” will be released in a few months.

Osborne recalls walking up and down Broad Ripple Avenue on Aug. 6, 1945, yelling, “Extra, extra, read all about it. U.S. drops automatic bomb.” He was 14 years old and had misread “atomic” as “automatic.” Despite his mistake, he sold out of papers.

“As with any significant global event, everyone knew where they were and what they were doing when they heard of the attack on Pearl Harbor and when the bomb was dropped,” said Osborne.

Growing up and experiencing WWII as a youth with all of his older cousins off to war, Osborne’s love of history began.

Osborne’s father, Gilbert Osborne, along with Merrill Clark, had started an industrial supplies company in 1940 called Clark & Osborne. The business is still located on Ferguson Street.

Upon graduating from Shortridge High School in 1949, Osborne started his mechanical engineering degree at Rose Hulman (Rose Poly Tech), then transferred and graduated from the University of Illinois. He worked for Douglas Aircraft Co. in California until he was drafted into the Navy. Being the only college graduate in his unit, Osborne was assigned an office position because he could type and was stationed in multiple locations around the country.

Osborne met his future bride at a dance at a local YMCA in Los Angeles. “It was a 21-and-over dance, and Josie was 20. I accused her of cheating,” joked Osborne.

After serving in the Navy, Osborne and his wife moved back to Indianapolis to take over his father’s business. He became a traveling salesman selling metalworking supplies, tools, gauges and small machinery for Clark & Osborne.

As Osborne traveled his territory, he spent his evenings in hotel rooms reading books that fueled his WWII interest. This fascination that started as an adolescent was becoming a part-time obsession. He thoroughly enjoyed discovering what was going on in the world around him during his youth. The more Osborne read, the more he realized that there were more books to be written on the topic.

Quite the contrary, this U.S. tour book could keep a WWII travel enthusiast busy for years. Interestingly, there are a few sites located in Indianapolis.

During the war, Germany had plans to build a four-engine bomber that would travel from Berlin to Chicago. The obvious bombing locations would be New York City, Washington, D.C., Detroit and Chicago where machines of war were being built. Indianapolis was also on the bombing list due to Allison Corporation building aircraft engines. Unbeknownst to the public, Indianapolis was home to a chemical warfare depot on Northwestern Avenue.

“Perhaps the most significant contribution to the war effort that was made here in Indianapolis was the Norden Bombsight,” said Osborne.

This bombsight was the best in the world and used in our bombers, causing mass destruction in Germany and beyond. While it was known that the Norden Bombsight was manufactured in Indianapolis at 21st and Arlington, its design and engineering was top secret.

Perhaps Osborne’s most popular book is “The Casablanca Companion,” which was released in 1990.
