LOCAL CUPCAKES STAR IN ‘DUMB & DUMBER’ SEQUEL Writer / Pat Carlini

Cupcakes may take center stage when the new Cake Bake Shop opens in Broad Ripple, but the sweet treats have already had a starring role in a feature film!

Broad Ripple resident and baker Gwendolyn Rogers has been flying to Atlanta to make cupcakes for scenes in the movie sequel “Dumb and Dumber To,” coming to theaters this fall.

The movie opens with Jim Carrey’s character — Lloyd Christmas — grabbing some cupcakes off a platter, taking a few bites, then flinging them across the room.

“It was a lot of fun,” says Rogers, who flew back just last October to make more cupcakes for the movie’s final scene that features Carrey, Jeff Daniels and Kathleen Turner.

Filmmakers Peter and Bobby Farrelly had Rogers’ cupcakes on the brain when they wrote the scene. Her husband — Park Tudor graduate J.B. Rogers — is a producer and assistant director on the film. He has worked on most of the Farrelly brothers films, including the original “Dumb and Dumber.” So, when the filmmakers heard J.B.’s wife was opening her own bake shop, they came up with a cupcake scene for the movie!

“It was easy enough just to make cupcakes,” laughs Gwendolyn Rogers. “The challenge was Jim Carrey is gluten free!”

Rogers went through batches and batches of cupcakes trying to come up with just the right gluten-free cupcake.

“I finally perfected a recipe that I thought I could serve to Jim Carrey!”

Rogers says she also made cupcakes for the crew.

“I would take at least eight dozen of all flavors when I would fly to Atlanta,” says Rogers. “They would be there waiting for me!”

That wasn’t the only crew that has spent time waiting for Gwendolyn’s cupcakes.

The Broad Ripple baker won a British bake-off where her chocolate cake caught the eye of Elton John’s entourage. They invited her (and her cakes) backstage to his concert in Paris.

“I had never been backstage before,” says Rogers. “And all because of my cakes!”

Rogers and her husband wanted to stay in Indiana so their boys — Drake, 11, Baxter, 16, and Weston, 13, could attend Park Tudor like their dad and J.B.’s family.

In the meantime, the family is excited about the opening of the The Cake Bake Shop at 6515 Carrollton Ave. It will serve up fresh baked goods, inside and outside, with wine and champagne in a “glam-French” inspired setting. In the meantime, Rogers says her brush with Hollywood has taught her a lot. After all, once you’ve spent countless hours perfecting a gluten-free cupcake for Jim Carrey, opening your own bakery should be a piece of cake!

BOBBY “SLICK” LEONARD

OUR HOOSIER HALL OF FAMER Perhaps the best description of Bobby “Slick” Leonard comes from someone who has evaluated the accomplishments of many Indiana basketball heroes and legends during his long career as a Hoosier State wordsmith.

Bill Benner, north of 60, has tangled with Bob Knight’s personality, described Reggie Miller’s exploits and now works with Larry Bird’s Pacers. But when asked how to best describe Leonard and the long-running basketball episode that has played in Terre Haute, Bloomington and Indianapolis/Carmel for 75 years of his 82 years, perhaps Benner sums it best in seven words. “He is the personification of Indiana basketball,” Benner said.

And it is hard to resist Benner’s declaration.

Indeed, our state has hosted many basketball celebrities since we fell in love with the game. But, mostly, our fabled characters have come and gone through this

crossroads of America: Miller, for instance, grew up in California and has returned to the West Coast. John Wooden was born in Martinsville and schooled in West Lafayette but reached greatness in Los Angeles. Oscar Robertson, born in Tennessee, starred in Cincinnati. Even Bird of French Lick and Indiana State fame became a national name as a Boston Celtic. Thus, can anyone argue that Leonard—born in Terre Haute, educated in Bloomington, and a resident, coach and broadcaster in Indianapolis/ Carmel for almost five decades—is not the biggest Hoosier basketballer of them all? This full-blooded Hoosier seemingly epitomizes all of us in Indiana.

So when Leonard ventures to Springfield, Mass., in August to join the storied Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, there will be more Hoosiers on

board for the ceremony than his wife and basketball partner, Nancy, his family and Pacers executives. There will also be hundreds, thousands or maybe millions of us in spirit when one of ours accepts the next sainthood into the sport he cherishes.

We will all be vicariously living the experience that Pacer executives enjoyed this winter when his finalist status for the hall of fame was announced.

Recently, the Leonards sat in the living room of their Carmel home to take part in another of the countless interviews reviewing the chapters of their careers.

Some questions were old. Some inquiries might have been new. Whatever was asked, both amazed us with their ability to recall the highest of accomplishments and the smallest of trivia points related to being full-time Hoosiers.

During his sophomore year, a girl asked Leonard’s mother if Bobby could attend a school dance with her. Mrs. Leonard agreed, but when the girl came to pick-up Bobby, he hid under his bed and no one found him. End of date.

“I didn’t know how to dance,” Leonard recalled. “I played basketball.”

That’s how many seconds were left in the 1953 NCAA championship game between Indiana and Kansas. The scored was tied and Leonard was fouled on a layup attempt. The guilty Jayhawk was Dean Smith, who later became a coaching legend at North Carolina. Leonard missed his first attempt and Kansas coach Phog Allen called time out.

“He was trying to freeze me out,” remembered Leonard. But after the time out, Leonard hit the second shot and the Hoosiers won the national championship.

However, previously to becoming a paid employee in 1976, she served numerous roles for the franchise, including creating the Pacemates (an extension of the Pacesetter hosts program), serving as a “mom” to the players and once driving Dancing Harry to a playoff game in Louisville.

When attending NBA meetings, she was frequently the only woman in the room.

Nancy Leonard and her staff spearheaded the drive that saved the franchise and produced a season ticket total that still ranks as one of the highest in the history of the franchise.

The Leonards convinced a developer to sell them two lots in a new Carmel neighborhood in 1969. The price was $8,100 per lot. Forty-five years later they still reside in the same five-bedroom home where a cabin once stood.

Okay, did you really think this basketball couple would have one, two or three children? They had to have a starting five and they did. All five of the Leonard children attended Carmel High School and the four boys (Bob, Tom, Bill and Tim) played a variety of sports.

“We never pushed them into sports,” said Bobby.

The Slick from Terre Haute Okay, this saying is not as romantic as Zeke from Cabin Creek ( Jerry West) or the Hick from French Lick (Bird), but the nickname of Slick has been heard for a long time in Indiana and other basketball outposts. So, who invented Slick? It was not Dick Vitale or Digger Phelps. Instead, Slick was born during a bus trip the Los Angeles Lakers made through West Virginia for preseason games. Leonard was involved in a heated Hollywood Gin match with Coach George Mikan at the front of the bus. “I blitzed him,” Leonard recalled, “and one of the players said that I was too slick. It stuck.”

Leonard’s love for cards-and winning for money-are part of his basketball folklore.

The first “BOOM BABY” It would be easy to theorize that the “BOOM BABY” blurted by Leonard for a Pacer 3-point basket was invented to label 3-pointers scored by Miller during his 18-year career with Indiana. After all, Leonard announced almost all of Miller’s games, and the 1987 draft pick drained 2,560 3-pointers. But that was not the case. “BOOM BABY” was hatched when Leonard was coaching the Pacers in the seventh game of the semi-finals of the 1975 American Basketball Association (ABA) playoffs. Denver held a 2-point lead with seconds left, and the Pacers got the ball to George McGinnis in the low post for a potential tying basket. But McGinnis kicked the ball out to a wide-open Billy Keller in the far corner. Game, set, Boom Baby. “Billy drilled it, and I shouted “BOOM BABY,” Leonard recalled.

And the biggest “BOOM BABY”?

“It was at the Miracle in Madison Square Garden,” Leonard said. “Reggie scored eight points in 13 seconds. One, he was right in front of Spike Lee, and he backed up for a 3-pointer. He nailed. I have never seen anything like it.” Today, Miller’s company is called Boom Baby Productions.

How about that red, white & blue basketball Along with having teams called the Anaheim Amigos, Minnesota Muskies and Pittsburgh Condors, the ABA was

also known for using a red, white and blue basketball. Founders of the league thought the basketball was a sign of patriotism. It took Leonard time to accept the colorful basketball. “I was an old NBA player,” he said. “We didn’t have that kind of stuff.”

Leonard also had to adjust to the 3-point shot. It, too, was an ABA rule and was scorned by the NBA…until Leonard led a charge to insert the “home run” into the league in 1979.

“I told them that the fans in Boston and New York are no different than the fans in San Antonio, Denver and Indianapolis,” Leonard said. “Our fans loved it, and so will theirs.” There was only one dissenting vote in accepting the 3-point shot. It came from a longtime Leonard rival, Red Auerbach.

Slick vs. Red It is doubtful that Leonard and Auerbach ever exchanged Valentine’s Day cards.

The rivalry between the two spilled over into the media and on-court. Even Nancy Leonard—who claims she and Auerbach had a respectful relationship—once challenged Auerbach when the Celtics came to Market Square Arena for the Pacers’ first NBA game in 1976. Nancy, in charge of game entertainment and activities, was visited by a referee during the game. The official said Auerbach was upset about the volume of the music and demanded that it be turned down. Nancy had a rulebook in her purse, showed it to the official and noted there was no rule on the loudness of music. After the official showed the rulebook to Auerbach, the Celtic coach slammed the book on the floor. Eventually, the Celtics rallied from double digits and won in overtime. “We were beating their butts,” Leonard said. “If not for [ John] Havlicek, we would have won.”

Champions vs. champions But while Leonard grudgingly concedes that Boston won that match, he is not ready to surrender that the Celtics of Larry Bird, Robert Parrish and Kevin McHale in the 1980s were better than his ABA championship teams in the 1970s, featuring Roger Brown, Mel Daniels and George

McGinnis. “That frontline of ours could have competed with anybody,” the coach said. “Larry couldn’t have handled Roger, and there is no way Kevin could have guarded George. Plus, Mel would have been a big problem for Parrish.”

Those disagreements with the officials During his coaching days, Leonard won 529 games for the Pacers. And he guided the blue and gold to three ABA championships.

But he was also known for some incredible outbursts when it came to referees, ball racks, timekeepers and others who stood in the way of his pursuit of success.

Let’s review some of those moments: • The Ball Rack. Before Bob Knight fired a chair across the floor at an Indiana game in Bloomington, Leonard became upset with referee Ed Rush in a game at the State Fairgrounds Coliseum and tossed a full ball rack at Rush. Balls were flying everywhere, and Leonard earned three technical fouls. He also reported to the ABA office in New York the next day.

• The Mormon Punt. Leonard remembers the passive following there was in Salt Lake City, a new franchise, when the Stars arrived. But it wasn’t quiet for long after Leonard turned the Salt Place into bedlam one night.

• After disagreeing with an official’s call, Leonard discovered the basketball at the free throw line and proceeded to imitate Pat MacAfee in punting the ball into the 50th row of the arena. From then on, Leonard recalls that the enthusiasm at Utah home games was high.

• The Slow Timekeeper. There was no need to rile up the fans in San Antonio, but Leonard did one time. During an ABA playoff game, the game was tied, and San Antonio had the ball and a chance to win the game. All broke loose when Leonard accused the timekeeper of having a slow trigger on starting the play clock. He grabbed the timekeeper, squared off with the San Antonio coach and was set to battle the city of San Antonio and the state of Texas.

• The Stolen Whistle. This, time it

was longtime official Wally Rooney who received Leonard’s wrath. After disagreeing with Rooney on a call, the Pacer coach grabbed Rooney’s whistle and took it with him. “You have to be a little bit nuts to coach,” he admitted.

The Best-Ever Team Almost 300 different players have worn the Pacer colors, and the roster has gone A to Z as in Abernethy to Zeno. So, if Bobby Leonard were to name his alltime Pacer starting lineup, whom would he select? “I’d have to have Reggie,” he assessed. “Got to have Reggie.” His next three players were selected in rapid-five: the trio of Mel Daniels, Roger Brown and George McGinnis. And the point guard? It came down to Mark Jackson and Freddie Lewis, another ABA legend. He paused and reflected. “Give me Freddie,” Leonard stated. “He was the ultimate floor

leader.” As for a sixth man? “I’d bring Paul [George] off the bench as my sixth man,” he noted. “He has a chance to be one of the best.”

Hall of famer And how did Leonard feel upon learning he was being named to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame? “The first thing I thought was what we [family, friends and fans] had all been through,” he said. “It is a great honor for everyone who has been with us on this journey.”

‘A BETTER WAY’ OFFERS STUDENTS FREE YOGA Writer / Nathan Lamb

A local school is partnering with a newly launched nonprofit to provide high school students with free yoga.

Calloway is the school’s point-person with A Better Way Yoga, a recently incorporated 501c3 nonprofit dedicated to promoting positive student behavior through yoga.

Having attended the first hourlong session at Broad Ripple Magnet High School for the Arts and Humanities in late January, teacher Carrie Calloway said the program is about helping youngsters become better students through yoga.

Emily Myers is the administrative director for the nonprofit, and her primary duties are coordinating between area schools and the volunteer instructors who teach the classes. She said there’s no cost for the schools and instructors even bring the yoga mats.

“I’m really interested in a holistic approach to helping students have a calmer approach to life,” she said. “If my students can learn new coping mechanisms, ultimately it helps the whole culture of the school.”

Launched in December, the nonprofit provides classes for five area schools at least twice per month. Myers said a big part of the instruction is providing students an alternative approach for coping with stress.

“A lot of our demographic is students who are having trouble — they have challenges,” said Myers. “We want to bring a different challenge into their life; we want to give them the positive challenge of yoga.”

A major sponsor of the program is The Yoga Studio Indianapolis, which also provides certified instructors for the classes.

Yoga instruction is based on ancient exercises of breathing, moving and meditation, according to the studio website. Physical benefits include increased strength, flexibility and endurance.

Tracing the evolution of the nonprofit, things got underway last year when founders Suzy Bindley and John Jarrett started volunteering yoga instruction at an area school. Myers said the nonprofit grew from there, saying youth yoga has become increasingly popular.

“Yoga brought to youth has been building momentum everywhere in the nation,” said Myers. “There have been studies that have proven that test scores go up and referral to places like the principal’s office go down.”

and Humanities was held in a large classroom and drew less than a dozen students. Calloway said the class went well and anticipated it will draw more students in coming months.

“I thought it was great,” she said. “The teachers were very professional and helpful for people of all ability levels.”

Located at 1115 Broad Ripple Ave., the magnet school has roughly 1,200 students in grades six through 12, and features programs in art, dance and music. Calloway said talks are ongoing with A Better Way to determine if it would be possible to include yoga as part of the existing physical education classes. She said they’re looking at the logistics of how that would work and figuring out how yoga would fit with the current curriculum.

In the meantime, Calloway said yoga is definitely a welcome addition as an after-school offering.

“I think it’s definitely a great program and a great opportunity,” she said. “They’re a nonprofit and they’re not charging the school.”

The

Flying Toasters 10 celebrate

One of the most notable entertainment venues in Broad Ripple is the Vogue Nightclub. With its deep history, it is the heartbeat of this trendy community. Originally, when it opened in 1938, it was a movie theater. Three decades later, it would be transformed into one of the most popular music venues in Indianapolis. Upon entering the theater, which still maintains its movie-style ticket booth, you can feel the nostalgia. On the walls are autographed photos of Willie Nelson, the Ramones, Johnny Cash, John Mayer, Frank Zappa and the Dave Matthews Band, to name a few. Nestled among the greats are local bands Roadmaster, Carl Storie and Henry Lee Summer.

It is fitting then that on March 14, one of Indy’s most popular bands, The Flying Toasters, took the stage to celebrate their 10th anniversary, with more than 800 of their biggest fans in the audience.

The Flying Toasters is the brainchild of Bill and Jason Hayes. In 2001, this father-and-son duo decided to form a band and began their pursuit to find the highest-quality entertainers in the area. For two years, they saw virtually every band in the area, researching music and looking for just the right musicians to add to their band.

According to Jason Hayes, the biggest inspiration was another local band called the Alligator Brothers, who gained popularity in Broad Ripple in the ’90s.

“The first time I saw the Alligator Brothers, it was mind-blowing,” he said. This collection of musicians, which included Carl Storie, Michael Read and Zanna Mitchell, entertained audiences with their stellar musicianship and wide variety of song selections. One of the keys to their success was the fun factor while engaging the audience. Anyone who has seen The Flying Toasters will tell you that this is also one of the reasons they follow the “Toasters.”

The original lineup included Orvis Kirkman (guitar), Rodney Stepp (keyboards), Bill Hayes (drums and vocals), Chris Brown (bass and vocals), Jason Hayes (lead vocals and guitar) and Sonja Meyer (vocals). The Flying Toasters played their first show on Wednesday, March 24, 2004, which led to a house gig at the Outside Inn. To increase their audience exposure, they worked with local booking agent Lisa Sauce of Blonde Entertainment. As their popularity grew, the band added a Thursday night house gig at Joe’s Grille 2 in Fishers.

Great fun, great company and a great cause: Participants will reap these benefits during the Congenital Heart Walk–Indianapolis taking place May 17 at Butler University. Organizers hope walk participants will raise at least $125 each to benefit research, support and education for those born with heart problems.

A collaboration between the Adult Congenital Heart Association and The Children’s Heart Foundation, the walk is one of many across the country that combine to form the nation’s largest grassroots fundraiser for an issue that’s the nation’s No. 1 birth defect.

“By bringing together adult survivors of congenital heart defects with today’s parents of children with congenital heart disease, we can raise awareness and funding to ensure that every person born with congenital heart defects thrives throughout her lifespan,” said ACHA President/CEO Amy Verstappen, herself a congenital heart defect survivor, in a news release.

Congenital heart defects affect one in 100 babies each year, according to ACHA statistics. Thanks to medical advances, more than 85 percent of children with congenital heart defects now live to at least age 18.

Registration for both sponsors and walkers is now open.

Participants can raise money as individuals or form teams.

Walkers can win overall prizes based on their totals, and there also are interim prizes, such as Pacers tickets, for the walkers raising the most in a certain week. Last year’s inaugural event featured 225 walkers who raised more than $30,000. This year’s goal is $35,000.

In the world of pizza cutting implements, local entrepreneur Tom Faludy has a new product he’s billing as a cut above the rest.

It’s called the Big Ass Pizza Cutter, and Faludy said it’s about kicking pizza parties up a notch.

“Pizza is not really a solitary food,” he said. “It’s a shared food, so there’s a social context to it, and within that social context, this thing becomes a focal point and catalyst for conversation, fun and sharing.”

Crafted stateside from stainless steel, the cutter sports a 22-inch tang-style blade, weighing in at roughly 2 pounds. It also features hickory handles and optional engraving on the blade.

“Goulash kind of confers a Hungarian connotation,” he said.

“Everybody who has tasted it has loved it.”

Having worked much of the past year to develop the idea, Faludy said the idea was to combine the industrial-style cutters from pizzerias with an “Old World” customized feel. He said it’s also designed for easy storage alongside baking pans.

The tool evolved through 11 different prototypes, refining functionally, looks and performance, before Faludy launched a website to market the cutter in early February. He’s optimistic it’ll become a popular gift for guys who already have everything.

“I think guys are pretty hard to buy for,” he said. “They already have a shirt and tie and most of the things people think to get for them; I thought this would be a great gift.”

Faludy, 67, has lived near Geist Reservoir for roughly 18 months, since retiring from an executive position with Berkshire Hathaway.

He remains active as a business consultant, saying he still works on the board of directors for three domestic companies and one in Australia.

That business background includes manufacturing, and Faludy said that played a role in the development of the pizza cutter.

Specifically, he said this project was also about finding a way to bring manufacturing back to Indiana.

“This is a genuine American-made product with 100 percent American-made components, made by Americans in Middlebury, Ind.,” he said. “I think it reflects a mark of craftsmanship.”

Faludy said the current plan is to market the cutter exclusively through the website, saying that fits with the customized business model. Looking ahead, he anticipates launching a new line of industrial-sized “Big Ass” barbecue implements this spring.

Asked about the name for his line of products, Faludy said the idea was to be irreverent and amusing.

“It’s all about fun, having a bit of attitude and not taking life too seriously,” he said.

“It’s not vulgar, it’s just kind of cheeky,” he added, at another point.

“No pun intended there.”

SEASONAL BREW REVIEW - with Hans & Joe In the past five years, we’ve seen an explosion of craft beer in the state of Indiana. Although iconic brands such as Budweiser have lost market share to “upstarts” such as 3 Floyds, Sun King and Upland (the three largest producers of craft beer in Indiana), about 95 percent of beer sold in the state is not made in Indiana. Nevertheless, the amount and quality of Indiana beer is at an all-time high, and the growth rate shows no sign of abatement. In this month’s article, instead of looking as specific seasonal brews, we’ll take a closer look at a few local breweries that are doing a particularly fine job of brewing beer.

3 FLOYDS

3 Floyds is the largest and best-known brewery in Indiana. In fact, and with no hyperbole, 3 Floyds is world-famous when it comes to craft beer. The brewery is noted for its use of hops. Sometimes I feel as though I could identify 3 Floyds beer based on smell alone, such is the brewery’s mastery of hops. Dreadnaught, which is a Double IPA, has been consistently rated as one of the finest of its kind for many years, and the recent addition of Zombie Dust has only solidified 3 Floyds’ position atop the pantheon of producers of hoppy beers. For any beer drinkers who think that wheat beers are a waste of time, Gumballhead is an explosion of hop flavor with relatively little bitterness.

Most of 3 Floyds’ production comes in the form of Alpha King, Robert the Bruce and Gumballhead, but it is the Dark Lord Russian Imperial Stout that puts this brewery on the world map. The beer is only available for purchase in bottles one day out of the year, and you have to go to the brewery to buy it. These days you even have to buy a ticket ahead of time to enter the property on Dark Lord Day (April 26 this year), as it has come to be known. I have been to this event in years past when it was much smaller—say between 500 and 1,500 people. These days, attendance can reach well over 5,000.

SUN KING

Although Sun King brewed its first batch of beer in 2009, the brewery has enjoyed a meteoric rise and is now the second largest brewer in the state behind 3 Floyds (which has been around since 1996). Along with its production of great beer, Sun King’s success can be equally attributed to its use of social media. Sun King causes the average Joe (the kind of person who never cared much about beer as long as it was cold) to start considering not only where a beer is made but also its level of quality.

Sun King’s Sunlight Cream Ale is sure to satisfy the beer drinker who is looking for a BMC-like flavor profile but different, and the Osiris Pale Ale will quench the thirst of hopheads. Along with the aforementioned beers, Sun King’s year-round offerings include Wee Mac Scottish Ale and an IPA that changes with the seasons. The brewery produces many other beers on a rotating basis. One of the finest and best known of these is Grapefruit Jungle, a massive IPA that will be released sometime in the mid- to late summer.

BIER BREWERY

Bier Brewery first opened in November 2010. Unlike a few other recently opened Indiana breweries, the consistency of Bier Brewery’s products hasn’t wavered since day one, and while the quality has always been high, it is still getting better with every batch. Bier is one of the state’s smallest breweries, but every ounce of beer made is turned over within approximately two weeks. This high turnover ensures that if you are drinking beer from Bier, generally speaking, you are drinking some of the freshest beer available anywhere.

Not every Bier product is available all of the time. Instead, beers are released on a somewhat seasonal and sometimes arbitrary basis. It’s kind of like a restaurant with a menu that changes every day. And whereas many breweries are best known for a handful of particular beers, Bier makes such a wide variety of extremely high-quality beers that it is difficult to focus on any two or three in particular as head and shoulders above the rest. However, if I could have only three of Bier’s offerings, I would suggest DFG Imperial IPA; Dred Brown, which is a Brown Porter; and any Saison currently available.

BLOOMINGTON BREWING CO.

BBC, or Bloomington Brewing Co., is known to some as “the other Bloomington brewery” and is unknown to many, but BBC is a favorite of mine. The Ruby Bloom Amber Ale is a smooth and malty amber ale with no hop bitterness. The Rooftop IPA is a perfectly balanced IPA, and BBC’s periodic releases of single hop pale ales are truly not to be missed! As a bartender who sees the dates on the kegs here at Patrick’s Kitchen, I can say that BBC (along with Bier Brewery and Sun King) is consistently some of the freshest draft beer around.

UPLAND

Upland has been one of my favorite breweries for seven or eight years now. I’m one of those craft beer drinkers who eschews most wheat beers, but Upland Wheat Ale is one of the few for which I would willingly pay. It is refreshing, great with seafood and shellfish in particular, and often served with an orange (I strongly advise against this, by the way).

Upland has really differentiated itself from every other brewery in the state with its sour program. That’s right, I’m talking about sour beer. The brewery makes several fruited Lambics as well as a Flanders Red Ale called Gilgamesh, all of which must be reserved online via a lottery system.

These sours are released on a rotating but somewhat regular basis, and it is these sour beers that have put Upland in the national spotlight of craft beer. The brewery recently launched a session IPA called Campside, which is perfect for those hopheads seeking to avoid the sometimes-crushing alcohol content of most IPAs. Consumer warning: Although approximately 99.9 percent of all beer should be consumed while fresh, it is particularly important to drink a beer like Campside IPA as soon as possible—within a month-and-a-half of its bottling date. And hooray for Upland for putting bottling dates on its products!

Everyone hold on to your wallets: The Taxman Brewing Co. has come to Bargersville! Taxman focuses on Belgian styles, but I’m sure that there will be a bit of meandering from the plan. The brewery offers five beers in its everyday lineup and will produce other beers as time and space allow. Both the Standard, which is a Belgian blonde ale, and the Exemption, which is a Belgian Triple, are great beers, and I look forward to tasting the Qualified, which is a Belgian Quadrupel. The Taxman tasting room and restaurant will open in July.

t’s not unusual to assume runners are health nuts — and that beer would be the last thing on their postrun go-to list. Indeed, the folks at Flat12 Bierwerks, a craft beer company on North Dorman Street, were a bit perplexed when they were approached about creating a cobranded beer for runners.

But it all makes perfect sense to Ashley Johnson and his wife, Andrea, who are both big craft-beer lovers as well as owners of the BlueMile specialty running stores in Carmel, Fishers, Broad Ripple and other locations in Indiana and Kentucky.

The Johnsons approached Flat12 about coming up with a beer geared toward runners “that people who exercise would like to drink after they run,” Ashley said.

“They said, ‘Why would anyone want that?’ [and I said], ‘Well, they’re drinking something, aren’t they?’.…That was when it all started.”

“When we first moved here in 2000, there wasn’t a lot of craft beer in Indianapolis,” said Andrea, who is thrilled that craft beers have gradually taken hold in the area. “We have this BlueMile [running] series in the summertime, and we started coming to Flat12 [afterward]. Runners and walkers and fitness enthusiasts tend to be very active, outgoing and like to try new things. .. . . So they were joining us at the different breweries, and we thought that we should have a beer for Blue Mile.

“We started pestering the Flat12 people about it, and they finally agreed. It kind of blossomed from hanging out at Flat12,” she said.

Once the folks at Flat12 were on board, it was just a matter of coming up with the right beer, which has been dubbed Brew Mile. “It’s an accessible, light, easy-drinking beer,” said Flat12 sales representative Derreck Ramsey of the extra-pale ale. It “drinks clean and has a finishing hop kick.”

And the beer’s look meshes nicely with Blue Mile.

then they’ll all go out together,” he said. His goal is to get Brew Mile into all the pubs and restaurants these runners already head to.

“They’ve got a sleek truck. They’ve got cool stores where everything feels like it’s very well thought out,” said Flat12’s vice president of marketing, Bob Weaver. Flat12 has been in the area for three years, and the owners were happy to connect with an established business like Blue Mile.

“Even people that aren’t runners [will like it]. It’s a great beer,” Ramsey said.

Once the team came up with the name for the beer and the idea for Bob Weaver, VP of Marketing for Flat 12 Bierwerks, led the taste the label, they started thinking testing with runners to find just the right taste. “Then we started doing some canning with our Half Cycle IPA, and that’s when we started thinking about runners and the scenarios about where they’re enjoying their beer — whether it’s the finishers’ tent or on vacation or on the beach somewhere or just home. Maybe a can would be preferable?”

Weaver said. “So we started going in that direction. That actually provided a really cool look and feel that fell in line with the

way Blue Mile does things. This can feels nice and trim and just put together. It felt like it fit a lot better [than a bottle].”

Ramsey is excited about Brew Mile’s potential, given the great sense of community that’s built into running.

“Typically, you’ll get a bunch of people that will meet up on the weekends and go for a run, do impromptu 2- or 3-mile runs, and

The members of St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild have been busy preparing for the 53rd Decorators’ Show House and Gardens. This year’s unique experience will take place May 26 through May 11 (Mother’s Day) at 5235 N. “We put on this Show House event to feature fine design, art and landscaping, but the proceeds go to benefit the patients, family members and caregivers of Eskenazi Health,” says Lori Goldsby, design director of St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild. Since 1907, the guild’s focus has been to help the underserved in Marion County

and raise funds for Eskenazi Hospital (formerly Wishard Hospital), which was originally the City Hospital, the first hospital built after the Civil War. Through the years, the proceeds from the Show House have helped fund many services and programs, such as the Richard M. Fairbanks Burn Center, Mobile Mammography Services and EMBRACE, an integrated support program for women facing cancer. So far, St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild has contributed nearly $11 million to Wishard/Eskenazi Health.

“With this year’s Show House, we have a classic home with good bones,” says Kathleen House, decorator chair of St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild. “We have 27 design areas that have been decorated by designers who have given their time and effort out of the goodness of their hearts.” These designers and their artisan contractors are stripping wallpaper, doing prep work and painting to show the newest developments and trends and to share their inspirational ideas.

MASSAGE THERAPY IS ONE OF THE HOTTEST PROFESSIONS IN THE MIDWEST Writer / Anne E. O’Connor

There are so many openings for certified professionals that “the demand is not getting met at this point,” said Marsha Thompson. The program chair of massage therapy at Harrison College at the Indianapolis East Campus has seen the demand skyrocket since she completed her training in 1998.

Then, most practitioners would start out very small, perhaps with an unused room in a beauty parlor.

“It was very hard to build up a clientele,” she said.

“It’s just grown unbelievable.”

Massage treatments can improve many conditions.

“When people are having more aches and pains and are looking for a more holistic way of dealing with these issues, massage is an obvious answer,” said Charlie Marsh, regional developer for Indiana for Massage Envy.

Thompson credits the growth in popularity to the professional certification standards that went into effect in Indiana in 2009. The Indiana Professional Licensing Agency grants certificates through a board of massage therapy.

“That really made it more accepted by the general public as a legitimate profession,” she said.

Two proposed legislative bills would upgrade the certification to a license. “Anybody can do massage, as long as they are not called a massage therapist,” she said. What the proposed legislation would do is “define the scope of practice and protect it.”

Harrison College offers two paths to become a massage therapist.

Earning an Associate of Applied Science in Therapeutic and Clinical Massage, requires an investment of 1,240 hours of study and costs about $44,000.

Earning a Therapeutic Massage Practitioner certificate takes 760 hours of study at a cost of $26,000. Scholarship and financial aid packets are available through the college, formerly the Indiana Business College.

Earning a degree gives students an opportunity to learn a specialty such as sports massage and to take general education and business

courses. Both the certificate and degree programs give students the training time needed to obtain a state certification.

Successful students come from all walks of life. “It’s very difficult to nail down who the typical student is,” Thompson said. “They want a career they can feel good about.”

Many are career-changers or retirees. Most plan on practicing part time. Some graduates remain at their previous jobs and do massage as a sideline.

Successful students tend to have the soft skills needed to become a successful therapist. The job demands empathy, good verbal and nonverbal communication skills, and physical stamina. According to statistics from the U.S. Bureau of Labor, employment for massage therapists will grow 23 percent between 2012 and 2022, much faster than average.

Despite a program with 70 students in the day and night programs, jobs remain unfilled. In February, a message on the Indianapolis site for Massage Envy said, “We are now hiring Certified Massage Therapists at all 12 Indianapolis clinics!”

A Love Letter to WWII

While stationed at Camp Atterbury, preparing to be shipped overseas, Cpl. James McDowell was placed into the U.S. Army Medical Corps. Thanks to his typing skills (he took six semesters of typing at Lincoln High School, in Neb.), McDowell became the triage typist admitting injured soldiers into the hospital. He was part of the 231st Medical Corps, which was placed in the middle of the busiest U.S. Army Air Corps unit of WW II: the 8th.

Recalling his time spent at Camp Atterbury, McDowell shared his first encounter with Col. Lynwood Gable, a decorated surgeon from the Great War (WW I). Gable climbed out of a car and, upon seeing the unit he was to command, declared, “What did I get myself into?!

Bring me a Coke! In fact, bring me two!” McDowell wasn’t sure of the significance of the cola request, but the colonel told his unit that they would be turned into “the best damned medical unit in the Army.” And based on the history books, it sounds like it was a mission accomplished.

Gable was a music lover, and he held auditions for a band. McDowell was chosen as the lead singer in what became known as the Gable Gators. He is a natural performer and had gained much of his experience as a schoolkid. He loved choir and sang whenever he had the chance.

On a trip to Indianapolis to buy sheet music, McDowell met the love of his life. Peggy Million worked at the Pearson record shop in downtown Indianapolis. It was love at first sight. The couple developed a relationship over the next several months before McDowell shipped off to England, proposing marriage to her before he departed. Every day he wrote love letters to his “one in a million.” Peggy wrote to him as well.

After spending their first six months at Red Grave Park, the 231st Medical Unit was placed in Norwich. The hospital served the notorious 8th, who were the flyboys bombing German positions across the English Channel. Each day a squadron of bombers would leave and all prayed they would return. McDowell said the casualties were high and they would see the bombers returning with holes in the planes, hoping they would land safely.

German “buzz” bombs were the main threat to the base. McDowell recalls hearing them. If the buzzing stopped, it was time to head for shelter. The fog presented another challenge. Many days they could not see their hands in front of their faces.

Gable Gators

On Friday and Saturday evenings, when the men weren’t working in the hospital, the Gable Gators entertained the 8th U.S. Army Air Corps at their base in England. The band gained popularity, even having some hits of their own over the airwaves. The band performed at numerous bases around England, entertaining not only the Americans but the English troops as well.

A highlight of McDowell’s 2.5 years stationed overseas occurred on August 18, 1944, the evening he met Glenn Miller. McDowell was actually a patient in his own hospital that day with a toothache on the left side of his mouth. A band member informed McDowell that not only were they requested to perform at the officers’ club that night in Attlebridge, but prior to their performance, Maj. Glenn Miller would be giving a concert in a bomber hangar on the same base. Determined to attend the performance, as well as sing with the Gable Gators, McDowell iced his swollen jaw all afternoon to prepare. McDowell succeeded not only in seeing Miller but also in being introduced to Miller and having a photograph taken with him in the men’s latrine.

This encounter wasn’t unique to McDowell. 1st Lt. John Woolnough of the 8th Air Corps also had a photograph taken in the latrine that night with Miller. After the war Woolnough would author six books about his experiences with the 8th Air Corps.

Woolnough mentions McDowell’s encounter with Miller in one of these books, a pleasant surprise for McDowell when he read the book.

McDowell became best friends with one of his fellow Gators, accordion player Lenny Kratoska. The two of them had the idea to start a radio station on base. Gable thought it was a splendid idea and pledged funding. The men went to London to buy the equipment, which included a huge transmitter. The guys figured out how to wire the hospital wards (barracks) with speakers on either end replete with volume controls. The guys took turns on their off-hours to play records for the healing soldiers in their hospital. A true morale booster, the radio station was extremely well received, and the patients made requests and dedications for the disc jockeys.

Returning from England aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise, McDowell says that one of the most amazing moments of his life was standing on deck with the other soldiers in their dress uniforms saluting Lady Liberty as they cruised into port.

McDowell was discharged through Camp Atterbury, which allowed a convenient reunion with his fiancé, Peggy. Peggy, who graduated from Butler University’s Arthur Jordan Conservatory of Music, accompanied McDowell to Chicago.

McDowell attended the Columbia School of Broadcasting, along with his buddy Kratoska. Kratoska became the music director for WBBM in Chicago, holding the post for 40 years. After graduating, McDowell and Peggy eventually moved to Indianapolis to settle down.

McDowell became known as Jimmy Mack (the nickname came from Kratoska, and Jimmy returned the favor, giving him his nickname of Lenny Kaye) and enjoyed a long career in broadcasting in Indianapolis. Jimmy and Peggy bought a home across the street from where Peggy grew up in Broad Ripple near the White River Yacht Club.

The McDowells’ extensive list of credentials and accomplishments defies comprehension. Their careers revolved around entertainment. Both developed radio shows, performed and raised three children. Among other things, Jimmy had a television show called “Teen Twirl” on WISH-TV and was a local radio personality. Peggy was a talent agent, and both performed with Footlite Musicals.

Peggy and Jim were quite the pair.

Peggy passed away in 2009, just missing her husband’s induction into the Indiana Broadcast Pioneers’ Hall of Fame.

An Indiana Broadcast Pioneer herself, her last gift to Jimmy was the Hall of Fame induction she submitted on his behalf.

Now 91, Jimmy Mack still performs occasionally. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing him perform a few times, and he does it flawlessly. Seeing him onstage, still able to wear his uniform from WW II, it is easy to picture the boy of 20, singing for the airmen, “I’ll be seeing you, in all the old, familiar places…”

The popularity of tattoo removal has increased dramatically with Hoosiers over the past few years for lots of different reasons. Many people regret the impulse tattoo that was added over a weekend or during a memorable spring break. Others seek out tattoo removal for job requirements, enlistment in the military or a change in lifestyle or relationships.

In the first year of business, owners of Skin Renew Laser Tattoo Removal Stacey Blanton and Vicki Reasner have helped over 200 people wanting to change their art and therefore get their original art lightened or to have it removed completely. “There was a time and a reason for getting a tattoo and for many people there is a time and reason to take it off,” said Blanton.

sessions and the time between sessions vary depending on the size and colors of the tattoo. A small black tattoo may only take 2-3 sessions whereas a larger tattoo with lots of colors may take 8 to 10 treatments. Every person is a little different and the process is affected by ones’ health.

The process of removing any tattoo with laser technology is a matter of firing the laser into the inked area and shattering the ink into particles that are then identified and absorbed by the bodies’ natural immune system. The tiny particles are processed through the lymphatic system and discarded through body waste. Different wavelengths of the laser detect and identify different colors of ink (black ink is the easiest to remove).

Tattoo removal for employment and other career opportunities is becoming very common. An estimated 40% of the clients at Skin Renew fall under this umbrella Blanton estimated. “One of our clients is entering the police academy and wants a large spider web tattoo removed from his leg. Another client is applying for a promotion to management in the fast-food industry and needs to have a heart tattoo removed from the side of her neck. A third client is a registered nurse that lost a position in the neonatal-intensive care unit at a local hospital because of a small tattoo on her wrist, she added. “Employers have more selection in hiring due to fewer jobs and visible tattoos can limit an individuals’ opportunity.”

They visited companies in Colorado and Texas and spoke with many other in the industry to find the best laser system.

Blanton used her own tattoo as a means to interview the laser companies as the patient.

Lifestyle changes also lead many clients to us as well. Often the tattoo art is outdated or faded or no longer relevant to whom the person is currently. Peoples’ interests, hobbies, and self-image evolve. Often times they want to get rid of the past or make a change for the future.

Two of the biggest myths that surround tattoo removal, she said, are that the process is extremely painful and very expensive. Broad Ripple Village will showcase at least 20 free art exhibits through the 2014 Spring Gallery Tour on Friday, May 9.

Organized by the Broad Ripple Village Association, the event matches area artists with local businesses willing to host the onenight exhibits. Elizabeth Shikany is chairman of the gallery tour planning committee, and she said it’s about highlighting what the community has to offer.

“We’re trying to create a fun evening that celebrates community, art and the businesses in Broad Ripple and encourages people to get out and walk the village and enjoy an evening with friends,” she said.

Founded in 1969, the Broad Ripple Village Association is a notfor-profit community organization dedicated to actively working on initiatives that improve the quality of life in Broad Ripple. In addition to the gallery tours, the association is involved with a variety of initiatives, which include community beautification, public safety, urban planning and other events.

An overarching theme of the association’s mission statement is promoting community involvement. Shikany said the gallery tours are a good fit with that mission.

“I think the gallery tour is a great way to build community support, whether it’s different businesses helping to promote other businesses or businesses promoting artists. It’s a great communitybuilding event,” she said.

The gallery tours will run from 5-9 p.m. on Friday, May 9. The tour is slated to return again in October.

Having been involved with the semiannual event for the past seven years, Shikany said it features a diverse cross section of the local arts scene, with common mediums including ceramics, jewelry and paintings.

“It’s a nice eclectic mix of art forms,” she said. “The idea is that each location has at least one featured artist, with an array of products for people to view or purchase.”

Shikany said the gallery tours are a long-standing tradition in Broad Ripple Village, which she described as the arts district of Indianapolis. She said it’s something of a special event and that most businesses in the village typically close around 6 p.m. but stay open until 9 p.m. for the tours. She said the tours generate a lot of community foot traffic and village business have really embraced it “Last fall we had 24 participants,” she said. “It was the most participants we’ve ever had.”

Shikany is manager of Marigold Clothing at 6512 Cornell Ave., and she said they’re planning to feature 40 to 50 pieces from local jeweler Suzanne Bowles. Other examples include African art by Kelly Trimble at the Artifacts crafts store and paintings by Susan Hodgin at the Bungalow gallery and gift shop.

A total of 20 businesses had signed on for the event as of late March. The takeout meals are high quality and appealing, she said. “It’s more about the presentation as well as the speed.”

So far, people really like the delivery service, she said.

Bike delivery began in January, a time when not many cyclists are on the road. The start time gave the restaurant and customers a chance to get used to the amenity and provide feedback.

Fortunately for Ryan, who works as a noodle ambassador in the restaurant, demand for takeout is low during cold and rainy weather.

Many patrons prefer to come into the only location with a fireplace.

But, weather permitting, he is still out there and is being seen.

The bike guy uses his own bicycle, but may soon sport new togs. The chain is working on designing a jacket. Two other locations offer bike delivery. One customer suggested putting a logo on his helmet.

“Man, this is a good idea. Have a noodle helmet,” Becerra said.

“We try to be as much a part of the Broad Ripple community as we can,” she said. The location, opened around 2005, participates in benefits for schools in the area.

Delivering meals by bicycle was an innovative and practical choice for a local restaurant. After all, most of the customers live close by.

“Bike delivery will be perfect,” said Jady Becerra, general manager of Noodles & Company in Broad Ripple.

Whether an order is simply one bowl of noodles or enough food to feed three or four families, the bike guy can handle it.

Outfitted with special thermal delivery bags, Daniel Ryan is already cruising through the neighborhood Monday through Friday between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.

“When the customer gets their food, it’s still going to be the right temperature,” Becerra said.

Noodles & Company caters events at area schools and businesses.

Bike delivery will be available for Butler University, Broad Ripple High School, Bishop Chatard High School and Park Tudor Independent School.

The usual delivery area is within two miles of the restaurant. The $2 delivery fee will be used for bicycle maintenance and there is no minimum order. It is up to the customers if they want to tip the deliveryman, Becerra said.

The wintertime start of the delivery service allows the restaurant and its customers to become accustomed to the new amenity.

Delivery hours might expand. “A lot of people have called on the weekend,” Becerra said.

During the summer, when more people are out and about, delivery might be available later in the day.

Noodles & Company serves “noodles without borders,” she said.

Chinese, Thai, Indian, American and Mediterranean dishes are all on the menu. Recently, sandwiches, salads and soups have been added. Seasonal specials help keep the menu fresh.

Happy employees help keep the customers satisfied. Delivery customers are sure to see a big smile when Ryan arrives with their meal.

“He really, really likes his job,” Becerra said.
