Broad Ripple High School, one of the earliest Indianapolis Public Schools, is located within the district. The first day of grade school was like the dawn of civilization. I walked the half block up Winthrop to School #80 with a sense of excitement and mission that the old explorers must have felt coming to a newly discovered land. Our smiling first-grade teacher, Mrs. Roxie Lingle Day, made us feel welcome and safe.

IN DAYS OF OLD...

When the pretty girl with the pigtails, Nancy Downs, cried because she had never been away from home before, Mrs. Day took her into her arms and held her on her lap. In the coming days, the wonders of the world were opened to us – words, pictures, numbers, music. More magic was introduced next door in The Library (housed in the Masonic Hall in those days), where I found my way, in the shelter of

stories, to the path I would follow and am following still.

I kept in touch with high school friends throughout the years but lost track of my School #80 pals as I left the neighborhood to go to Shortridge and write for “The Daily Echo” (I was already prepared by publishing first in “The Rippler,” the School #80 paper).

I left town for college at Columbia (where I wrote for “The Daily Spectator”) and life in New York, Boston, Los Angeles and Miami, circling back here in 2011. I first lived downtown, so it wasn’t until I moved back to my old Broad Ripple neighborhood a few years ago that I found a few of my fellow survivors from the cradle of our beginning – School #80.

Last year, I met up with Gene Neudigate again, my basketball-crazed comrade who got his start playing at my backyard backboard on Winthrop and went on to star at Broad Ripple. We get together now and repeat the same stories of basketball or of School #80, never tiring of telling our stories, over and over, like the beat of the ball being dribbled on the hardwood.

“Guess who I ran into about 10 or 15 years ago?” Gene asked me. (At this age, “10 or 15 years ago” seems a lot like yesterday.)

“This woman I didn’t recognize,” he continued, “called to me – ‘Gene – Gene Neudigate,’ she said, ‘Don’t you remember me? I spent a lot of time with you!’"

“I stared at her and said, ‘I’m sorry, but I still don’t know who you are.’" “‘I’m Mrs. Grimes!’ she said.”

Mrs. Grimes was the fourth grade teacher at School #80.

“She did spend a lot of time with me,” Gene

said. “In fact, she spent more time with me than any other teacher ever did. She was my favorite teacher.”

Those teachers have remained part of our lives, sometimes even “in person” as well as in memory. Mrs. Grimes came to my mother’s funeral. The summer I was a sophomore in college, I drove with a friend to California, and we stopped in Carmelby-the-Sea, so I could visit my eighth grade teacher, Louise K. Wheeler. She was the first person who said I could write. Thank you, Miss Wheeler. I’m doing it.

Maybe getting to know again friends from School #80 confirms my sense of who I am as a man of 83 by reminding me of who I was in the very beginning. (“I was, therefore I am.”) Gene Neudigate told me he had seen his old grade school class again when Alice Ashby Roettger convened them for lunch at Plump’s Last Shot on the day of their 50th Broad Ripple High School Reunion. Alice Ashby! Of course! She played the violin and wrote for “The Rippler”!

I had run into her a few years before when I went to borrow either a cup of sugar or a bottle of wine from my neighbor Mary Holland, and Alice was just coming out the door with a few others from some neighborhood committee. She stopped on the steps, and we started talking about our favorites from “The Golden Book of Song,” which was practically a textbook at School #80. Alice promised to invite me over some time to talk about our old teachers and belt out a few numbers from “The Golden Book,” but like most good intentions, it hadn’t come to pass, so a few weeks ago, I called Alice and invited myself over.

She still has a copy of “The Golden Book of Song,” and opening it is like opening a box of Proust’s madelines. The names of songs – “The Old Oaken Bucket,” “Merrily We Roll Along,” “Sweet and Low,” “Men of Harlech” and “Columbia, the Gem of the Ocean…” bring back scenes of every season of childhood.

open and a soft breeze blesses us all, as we’re gently lifted “On Wings of Song.” I can hear as clear as day the voice of Sandra Anderson singing the soprano solo in “Hiawatha,” the sound bringing with it an essence of spring as true as a green bud just about to burst – as we were too and didn’t know it.

The music makes teachers materialize – Miss Shute and Mrs. Grimes, Miss Shaw and Miss Wheeler. Both Alice and I remember Miss Louise McCarthy, the teacher who was most unpopular then and now seems the one who may have taught us the most.

“She made us always write in complete sentences,” Alice remembers, “and to make outlines before we wrote.”

“And she taught us to think,” I say.

Sometimes she shocked us. In the spring of seventh grade, we were studying American history, and Miss McCarthy was telling us how America took the Philippines. It didn’t seem “fair” or “democratic,” and Miss McCarthy could see we were unsettled and disturbed by our country’s methods of conquest – and then she really knocked us for a loop.

“Do you think America is always right?”

Miss McCarthy asked the class, the very question seeming subversive; and then she wagged her finger at us slowly back and forth and said, “Why, not at all, Seven-Bs, not at all!”

Our minds reeled. This was a new way of looking at things, a perspective we had never seen before. Years later, this revolutionary lesson from Miss McCarthy came to mind when I heard Kurt Vonnegut asked in an interview: “Where did you get your radical ideas?” and Vonnegut answered proudly – and without hesitation – “The Public Schools of Indianapolis.”

Alice was in the first grade when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. Reaching the Masonic Hall, I fling my bike to the ground And leap up the steps, All the time sensing the buildings That flank the street as they stretch north to the canal.

Drug stores and small groceries, The shoe repair shop, bakery, and deli.

Then, last, the fire station that hugs the very banks of the canal.

And beyond the bridge – the modest dwellings of the canal builders’ progeny.

Entering the Hall – which houses the library – I sniff the familiar odor of books, And savor the promise . . .

War stamp sales in the corridors and graphs showing each classroom’s participation in them, periodic air raid drills and piles of scrap growing the schoolyard were the norm . . . The air raid drills provided not only an opportunity to instruct us on what to do ‘in case of attack,’ but also afforded us a chance to gather as a school to sing patriotic songs to the accompaniment of the upright Steinway that had been pushed into the hall from the nearby gym.

Alice remembers making tinfoil balls, collecting milkweed pods to help make parachutes and eating “Victory Cakes” made without eggs, butter or milk. Like me, she collected paper and scrap metal and bought “War Stamps.” All this was part of being patriots on “The Home Front,” and School #80 was our fortress, our headquarters as well as the heart of our learning – our neighborhood cathedral whose halls seemed hallowed.

“While we sang inside, a scrap pile began to grow in our schoolyard. I learned that one old tire could provide as much rubber as is used in 12 gas masks, and that an old lawn mower would help make six 3-inch shells.

Now it’s a condo. Someone is living in my first grade classroom! Nothing is the same in our old neighborhood. The institutions we knew are gone – Gene’s Pure Oil Station, Wally’s Grille, Lobraico’s Drugstore, The White House record store, Vonnegut Hardware .

I rode my scooter to school one day – the tires . . The Vogue remains, but like School #80 had worn bare, and my parents encouraged me becoming a condo, the movie house has to donate it to the war effort. I hoped to win become a night club. It seems like everything praise for the ultimate sacrifice, like the junior else is a bar. Gene Neudigate’s house – the high boy who donated his entire electric train last one on the north end of the block at 62nd set. "Dan: I just finished reading your "Hoop Dreams" piece in the Broad Ripple Magazine. As usual, I enjoyed your writing and your insights. It brought back a lot of memories; I was there. I, also, can easily recite the names of that fabled BRHS team. I thought you might be interested in knowing that twenty years ago or so a group of Frank Baird's former players and students put together a fund in his name to finance scholarships for deserving collegebound Broad Ripple student athletes. Three or four of these scholarships are awarded every year. One recipient several years ago was George Hill, now of the Pacers. It is rumored that he wouldn't need the cash today. Bill Bastian and Hugh Wolf whom you might possibly remember as Broad Ripple basketball players of your (our) era are members of the current selection committee along with me and some younger guys. Frank, as you point out, was great and greatly respected. Plenty of funny and/or touching Baird stories come from this committee.

Brandywine Creek Farms Battles Hunger and Helps Community

Imagine a program to help stop hunger in Indianapolis that also encourages and helps war veterans and at-risk kids.

The couple operate a special place called Brandywine Creek Farms in Greenfield. Their goal is to put an end to hunger in central Indiana, while also

helping different groups of people in need of additional assistance.

Brandywine Creek Farms, located just 14 miles east of Indianapolis' city limits, is a sustainable produce farm changing to nonprofit status to address food insecurity, while empowering atrisk youth and military veterans with hands on agriculture and horticulture training.

"What we do is very therapeutic for a lot of people," Jonathan Lawler said over coffee at Mama Bear's in Geist. "It gives them a feeling of being productive without any pressure, and they enjoy being outside."

Brandywine Creek Farms previously operated as a for-profit business for several years and raised nearly 700,000 pounds of produce and pork.

Jonathan, executive director of Brandywine Creek Farms, said the first year goal of 500,000 pounds is a very realistic possibility based on the farm's capacity and the addition of an army of volunteers committed to helping throughout the season.

"What we do is very therapeutic for a lot of people," Jonathan said. "It gives them a feeling of being productive without any pressure, and they enjoy being outside."

His wife Amanda agrees. "The at-risk kids we work with are happy to be put in nature.

It grounds them to see how great growing something is," she said.

The at-risk kids not only learn where their food comes from and how it is grown, but the value of helping others in need.

are working side by side with someone and serving as a mentor, you can get them to open up about their problems. They know they have a friend who will listen to them and empathize."

He added that working with livestock on the farm also provides educational opportunities as the kids and volunteers get to see the animals as part of the farm operation. The questions asked lead to some great conversations, and the kids end up learning a little about animal husbandry.

Brandywine Creek Farms has also partnered with Gleaners Food Bank, Kenneth Butler Soup Kitchen and many other food banks in the Indianapolis area as distribution partners.

"Kids from urban areas who have really liked the program have told us they decided to go to Purdue University to study agriculture," Amanda said.

Amanda said Brandywine Creek Farms also plans to offer four intern positions to U.S. military veterans who are interested in pursuing a specialty crop agriculture operation of their own.

Jonathan noted that the kids are really looking for a second chance. "When you

"I love that passage because the farm is Biodynamic, meaning that large stands of trees and ground cover are kept to enrich the soil and environment," Jonathan said.

Organic farming methods are utilized, and everything is kept as natural as possible, while still maintaining the same production standards as a conventional farm. Wildlife such as deer, hawks, foxes and great horned owls can all be seen at Brandywine Creek Farms. Jonathan also owns a transportation consulting firm and believed he could address food insecurity after his son talked about children at school who take food home from the school pantry.

"Hunger is not isolated," Jonathan stated.

"It can be an issue where you do not expect it."

I thought about the large impact I could make if my farm's production was directed at food banks and soup kitchens instead of retail and wholesale outlets. The great thing about Brandywine is that it gives people a food education, it's an outreach program and it helps people with a limited income grow their own food."

"To reach our goal of a half million pounds of local produce and meat donated to food banks, Brandywine Creek Farms will put 30 acres into production."

One of the main goals is to increase acreage every season. The farm will be open to the public June 1-October 1. "We are still looking for more funding to get completely off the ground. We are still $62,000 short.

We won't be self-sufficient for six to seven more years."

Discovering Lost Stories

SPEAKYOURSTORY SEEKS TO REWRITE HISTORY

A woman sat listening as the professor handed out a class assignment. From her desk, she leaned toward a blind man, reading the work to him. As the semesters continued and seminary graduation neared, the woman followed the man to all his classes, reading to him every book, every paper and every task. The man was Joe Morris, and the woman was his wife, Helen.

Katie Morris, co-founder of the website SpeakYourStory, recalls the narrative of her grandmother and how she faithfully guided her husband through seminary. The lost tales of women like Helen Morris are just what SpeakYourStory aims to uncover.

SpeakYourStory (speakyourstory.org) is a website featuring essays, memoirs, art, inspirational quotes, journals and more; the organization strongly believes that every woman has a story to tell.

“Anything that happens can turn into a story,” says Katie. Women from all across the country submit stories via the website,

email and social media; the stories typically remain unedited when published and are free from ads, comment options or ‘Like’ buttons.

“We’re trying to keep it a very safe space,” says co-founder Teal Cracraft. “It’s not a place that’s open for debate.” When she and Katie first began the website, they wanted to counter the often hostile world of blogging and provide a venue for women to share stories free from judgment.

SpeakYourStory finds its beginnings long before friends Katie and Teal ever met.

Katie had always wanted to be a lawyer, and she eventually worked her way through law school. But six years ago, Katie found herself moving away from criminal justice. “It’s such a pain-filled world,” says Katie who soon started looking for another way to advocate: a website dedicated to sharing “unfiltered stories of all women.”

For Teal, her story began with the pain of her parent’s divorce. She thought about how she wanted to create her own existence— her own story. In fact, Teal composed a 12 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / MARCH 2016 / atBRip.com

senior thesis on the negative depiction of women in “The Canterbury Tales.”

The thought of women’s roles in literature occurred to Teal again as she and Katie began noticing the lack of representation of women in many TV shows and movies. With that, they began planning SpeakYourStory. After sending out an email to friends and family requesting stories, Katie and Teal finally published their first edition of the website in March.

With each week comes a new collection of stories: stories of physical and mental illness, depression, abortions, addiction, divorce, rape, eating disorders, homelessness and domestic violence.

In its short history, SpeakYourStory has ventured far beyond simply a website.

Recently, the organization hosted a storytelling event at the Speak Easy called “On Being Wrong.” Also, this month SpeakYourStory will return to the Indy Fringe Theatre in April during Diva Fest to curate a live event with Storytelling Arts of Indiana on the theme “Empowered Love.”

“It’s not only the narrative of where you’ve been but creating the narrative of where you will be,” says Teal.

Katie and Teal recently raised money for several ambitious projects. Recently they worked with an advisor to develop plans for a podcast featuring tales around a common theme. They also raised money to complete a book proposal. The SpeakYourStory book will anthologize memoirs, essays, art and poetry from all around the country, highlighting the theme, “The part of you that saved you.”

These attractive, fit and friendly guys may look like models, but they are men from the community who support the cause and are willing to brave a

party full of women.

Jill Schuman, co-chair of the event, spoke about the collaborative efforts that go into organizing this incredible event and the purpose that continues to motivate her and her co-chairs.

“We have been thrilled with the previous years’ success,” Schuman said. “It all began when Gleaners pitched the idea of teaming up with Wine, Women & Shoes, enjoying a day with our girlfriends shopping, eating and wine tasting while raising money for a good cause. It is a relaxing and enjoyable midday event that is designed to be different from a typical black-tie evening gala.”

Schuman mentioned that guests will be able to experience a wide selection of wines and delectable foods from local sponsors and restaurants. There will be 10 local vendors and restaurants on-site. As another way to raise money that day, the vendors will donate back 20 percent of the purchases made by the attendees. They will also be able to participate in a variety of contests, and the most incredible raffle prize is a key to a magnificent wardrobe closet, constructed on-site by California Closets and filled with over $12,000 of merchandise, gift certificates and other incredible prizes donated by the 10 vendors at the event.

There will be 160 tickets sold at $160 per ticket, and at the end of the event, the lucky ticket holder will take home all of the prizes and the opportunity to have California Closets come to their home and build a custom closet. In the closet are hidden boxes with additional prizes such as a certificate to purchase a pair of designer shoes with the assistance of a personal shopper at Saks Fifth Avenue at the Keystone Fashion Mall and other elaborate and fun gifts.

“This year’s event will feature the Saks Fashion Lounge,” Schuman added. “There will be a bar and music in this area.

We will have a live auction with some incredible donated items, and we will have a presentation for our guests on the Gleaners BackSacks Weekend Food for Kids program and how the event and all of its components supports Gleaners. We will also have a ‘Fund a Need’ segment. There will be several photo opps and fun contests such as ‘Best Shoes’ and ‘Best in Dress.’”

Schuman also expressed that one of the more unique and entertaining parts about the event is the presence of their Shoe Guys.

“Our Shoe Guys are absolutely phenomenal,” she said. “We will have ‘shoe cards’ with each of their faces printed on the cards. Our guests will vote for their

favorite Shoe Guy, voting through the Gleaners website during the event. They can donate as little as a dollar or whatever amount that they wish. here’s an exciting new trend among expecting families called gender reveal parties. If you’re asking yourself, “What’s a gender reveal party?” then you either don’t know anyone who’s expecting, you aren’t expecting or you live under a rock.

A gender reveal party is a party to find out the gender of an expecting couple’s baby. Generally, gender reveal parties lie somewhere between the pregnancy

announcement and the baby shower.

Thanks to social media, this trend is exploding with some good and bad reviews, but it’s a trend that is not going anywhere any time soon.

Who is doing it? A lot of people. Gender reveal parties started popping up around 2011 with a simple cake you could cut into to find out reveal the baby’s gender: blue for boy and pink for girl. and even the whole world.

Celebrities like Snooki, Dave Annable and Carrie Underwood, just to name a few, revealed their baby’s gender on national television or video to not only tell their families but the entire world. Other celebrities have used gender reveals on their Instagram and other social media pages.

If you are invited to a gender reveal party, you should expect food and games, maybe even together. Be prepared to have some

cookies or cupcakes either pink, blue or some neutral color. Games often include guessing the gender of what you think the baby might be, predicting the day of birth or learning old wives’ tales of boys versus girls.

Finally, the reveal — is it a boy or a girl? If you are thinking of bringing a gift, it’s not necessary (unless it’s a shower and gender reveal in one).

Thinking of throwing one? Let your sonographer know ahead of time that’s the plan, but you can always know and keep it a secret too. Bring an envelope if you don’t want to know and ask the sonographer to put the gender inside. At that point, you can give the envelope to a trusted friend or family member or give it directly to your baker/party planner.

Scotty's Celebrates Years in Business

Celebrating 20 years, Scotty’s Dawghouse is the latest of the brand expansion with the most meaningful experience taking place in his hometown.

Scott Wise grew up in Muncie, attended Yorktown High School and transferred to Ball State after his freshman year at DePauw.

“I knew I wanted to own my own business,” shares Wise. After graduation, he worked in Texas at a sporting goods chain as a copywriter and bartended at night. He hated his 9-5 job but loved working in the service industry at night, foreshadowing what was to come.

Wise comes from a family of entrepreneurs; his parents own their own businesses. He was known around town by his parent’s contributions to the community. Wise wished to make his own mark. Upon moving back to

Muncie, he heard a corner bar was for sale. Wise created a business plan and presented it to his father, who was impressed with the attention to detail and thoughtful consideration of the plan.

The first Scotty’s opened on the corner of University and Martin Streets.

The original Scotty’s is still standing. This year marks the 20th anniversary of its opening. Given the college town success, naturally the second location would be in Bloomington. Now there are 14 restaurants under the Scotty’s branded empire.

Butler University will celebrate the first bar on campus in over 200 years, Scotty’s Dawghouse. Located close to Hinkle Fieldhouse, Scotty’s Dawghouse promises to be a popular hangout for students and local patrons.

All of the Scotty’s restaurants personify Wise’s personality through brick and mortar along with good food. To Wise, each restaurant is a living, breathing child of his.

Wise was raised to give back to the community. As a kid, he raked the lawn next door to help his neighbor, and he’s always had a soft spot for those with special needs. Wise has his own difficulties with low vision, color blindness and a detached retina. A pivotal moment with Wise and his family occurred in the summer of 2014 when Wise teetered near death with a brain infection. After gratefully recovering from that terrifying experience, he was determined to accelerate doing as much good in the community as he could.

“With Scotty’s Brewhouses, we were steady with our community efforts,” shares Wise.

“After my brain infection situation, we went from 30 mph to 100 mph.”

It was after that experience that Wise created a stronger vision statement for his company, which included a card that all employees carry every day, reinforcing the message.

a fellow Yorktown High School grad Jeff Huffman via Twitter. Huffman has a son with Down syndrome and is a major advocate with The Arc of Indiana. He connected Wise with Kim Dodson, Executive Director of The Arc of Indiana, who pitched the idea to Wise.

Dodson barely began to speak when Wise interrupted her and said, “I’m in.”

Dodson replied, “20-25 percent of your workforce must be composed of the training institute students who have special needs.”

“I said I’m IN! 100 percent, I am IN!” replied Wise, who knew with every fiber of his being that this was the right thing to do.

“This fit 100 percent with what we are doing.

After committing, the reality set in about consideration for other groups, guests and the other employees.

“It’s not as complex as one might imagine,” shares Jason Podell, Director of Training for Scotty’s Brewhouse and THR3E WISE MEN Brewing Co. “Sensitivity training for awareness and how to work with people with special needs was helpful.”

Three weeks leading up to the grand opening, the human resources director

came to see Wise with tears in her eyes.

“Scott, you wouldn’t believe how incredible this thing is,” says Wise of the conversation.

“We thought we were doing something for the people with special needs, but you should see what is happening to the people around them.”

“The team is cohesive because of these people,” says Podell. “We’ve never seen anything like it – we lost fewer employees through the process than ever. We average a 30 percent attrition rate before the doors open, and in Muncie, it was less than 5 percent.”

“The employees from the training facility are very loyal and productive when focused on a task. Their excellent attitudes are contagious and greatly beneficial for our culture,” says Podell. “After this experience,

we are using this as a model for all of our restaurants.”

The special needs employees are the glue that binds the family of workers at THR3E WISE MEN in Muncie. The rest of the employees are protective and nurturing with their co-workers with special needs. With an 82 percent unemployment rate among special needs adults, these are their first paychecks and their first uniforms, and they are jumping up and down with joy.

“To be able to celebrate 20 years in business with the new downtown Muncie location is so meaningful in so many ways,” says Wise.

"It’s awesome for me to come back and open such an impactful restaurant to celebrate our 20th year.”

“I love the fact that we are trendsetters for our community, state and country,” says Podell. “Adults with special needs have the potential of being an amazing workforce, and it’s relatively untapped. It’s the right thing to do. We are honored to be a part of this. It’s eye-opening and heart-opening for all involved.”

While in college, he was a member of the soccer team. He received his Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of Detroit Mercy. At U of D, he graduated in the top of his class and earned several plaudits, including the coveted Pediatric Dentistry Clinical Excellence Award. He was also inducted into the prestigious Omicron Kappa Upsilon dental honor society.

Dr. Mullally is married with three young children ages 3, 2 and under 1-year-old. He and his family recently moved to the Indianapolis area following a period in which he worked in one of Bright Side’s offices in Michigan. Even with the time constraints that come with having three very young children and a growing dental practice, Dr. Mullally is looking forward to getting involved in the local community and still plays soccer in the local adult league.

One of the things that Dr. Mullally emphasizes in his dental practice is personal care. This begins with the first meeting with a new patient.

He said that his initial interview with a patient is probably two to three times longer than those of other offices. Dr. Mullally works hard to ensure that the patient feels comfort and to ease the anxiety some patients have about seeing a dentist.

Dr. Mullally said, “I do work with a lot with very anxious patients that have not seen a dentist for quite a while. I have had a number of patients that have gone to other dentists that were told that they really need to be sedated. Because we are able to really connect with them during the initial interview and also by performing a series of smaller procedures initially, we are able to work up to doing the larger procedure without sedation.” He said he’s "proud to work at Bright Side Dental where I have all the resources I need to give our patients the best care and experience possible.”

Step into spring with the new Color Me Orchid exhibition, a vibrant and stunning display of orchids in the IMA’s Madeline F. Elder Greenhouse through March 13. The exhibition will pay homage to the brilliant colors, shapes and pattern of orchids, while also highlighting their history and connection to the IMA. Throughout the show, orchids will be available for purchase in the Greenhouse and at a special Pop-Up Shop in the main Museum building. IMA horticulture experts will be available to share advice on orchid care.

For more than 40 years, orchids have been a striking staple in the Greenhouse.

The orchid was the favorite flower of Madeline F. Elder, who rallied volunteers and support to save the Greenhouse from demolition in 1972. From the beginning of Elder’s involvement, the Greenhouse has housed this exquisite flower.

“Orchids have a great history of captivating people,” said Sue Nord Peiffer, the IMA’s greenhouse manager. “People really enjoy seeing this exotic and diverse group of plants. They have the most complicated bloom in the flowering world.”

For guests looking for extra tips for caring for these complex flowers, the IMA will offer workshops on mounting and repotting orchids on March 5. Workshops are $35 and $60 for the public with special discounts for IMA members.

The exhibition is the first of its kind in the Greenhouse in recent years. As a living gallery space, the Greenhouse offers classes, workshops and educational plant displays year-round.

AN ARTIST COMES FULL CIRCLE CHILDHOOD LOVE TURNS LIFELONG CAREER Writer / Joshua Deisler

Stuart Sayger had hit the jackpot. His father was just steps away, discussing dusty lamps at a local antique show. But Stuart was huddled on the floor with a pile of old, torn comics at his side. As he opened the first page, the musty, grassy odor lifted from the comic book like a wave. It was just the beginning of a long, successful career.

“I can remember being 5 or 6 years old and seeing old comic books,” says Stuart Sayger, professional comic artist and illustrator. Some of his first memories with comics involve visiting antique shows with his father, paging through Batman comics, anticipating the next adventure and meeting his childhood hero, the artist of the comic Micronauts. “I remember thinking that this was the guy I looked up to,” he says.

Stuart remembers often drawing superheros as he grew up, and his love of comics led him to work at Comic Carnival throughout his middle and high school years. Cataloging and selling comics helped gain him experience for his future success.

Stuart attended IU where he studied journalism and art history.

There, Stuart regularly worked as an illustrator for the student newspaper. “That was a good training ground in becoming a professional illustrator,” says Stuart. He notes that working with deadlines and editors helped prepare him for publishing comics.

At IU, Stuart built friendships with other artists. Stuart happily remembers his friends meeting at his apartment to create a comic book—in a single night. Stuart and his buddies worked non-stop, finally breaking at midnight to make copies of their new book. It was the first of many publications to come.

After graduating and moving back to Indy, Stuart considered making his own comic book. He liked the style of ’70s DC horror comics and wanted to create something similar. “I was going to make a comic book that I liked,” says Stuart, who

wanted the comic’s art style to fit the mood of the moment. A fight scene, for example, could feature hard, jagged lines. Some frames could be colored while some could be in grayscale.

Stuart set his eyes on Chicago’s Wizard World, the second largest comic book convention. “I decided to dare myself to go,” recalls Stuart. He had attended several times as a fan, but this time, he was on a mission to observe how the event was organized and executed: different artists, editors and publishers all gathered in the convention hall. For people to know his name, Stuart would need to set up his own table.

After the close of the convention, Stuart called the organizer to secure a table for following year. “I had nothing to set up, but I had secured the spot and had given myself 11 months to get the book done,” remembers Stuart. "The ticking clock kind of does some things to help you be motivated.”

Nearly a year later, Stuart had self-published the first edition of his comic book “Shiver in the Dark.” The story revolves around Grace, a college freshman who finds herself in a dark and untenable situation after stealing an old book. Stuart honored his desire to draw the scenes to fit the mood of the moment. “There was no editor to tell me no,” says Stuart.

So, Stuart had his table set and his book copied and ready to show.

He was nervous; he had no idea how the book would be received.

“You make this thing, and you don’t know if you’re going to sink or swim,” he says.

Soon, a comic book store owner approached and picked up his book. The man liked Stuart’s savvy art of psychological horror.

“I don’t care what this is about. I want it,” Stuart recalls the man saying. More and more admirers arrived at Stuart’s table, excited to see something new.

As the convention neared its end, Stuart looked over to the Diamond table. Officials at the comic distributor noticed how busy

Stuart’s table was, and after examining his book, Stuart recalls them saying, “We’d love to have it.”

Stuart’s first achievement would not be his last. “I felt like I had crossed the finish line. I had no idea it was just the first leg of the race.” From there, Stuart reprinted his book, which sold well on a national scale.

Soon, Stuart began working on issues two and three of “Shiver In the Dark” and began planning where to visit next. “I literally looked at the map and thought, ‘Ok, what are some places I could go to?’ It was either this or get a real job,” he laughs.

It was at that first convention where Stuart would forge a careerlong partnership with an editor when he handed him a copy of “Shiver in the Dark.” The editor soon called Stuart. “I never forgot you,” Stuart recalls him saying. He offered Stuart a job drawing a vampire series, “Bram Stoker’s Death Ship.”

Stuart scored one opportunity after another and was soon asked

by DC Comics to draw “Bionicle”—a comic that accompanies the popular LEGO series. “I was stunned because it was such a big project. It definitely elevated my exposure,” he says. Stuart worked as the penciler and inker for the comic for several years. In fact, the comic Bionicle was translated into eight different languages.

Stuart now has so many opportunities, he often has to turn some down. “I can’t tell you how frustrated I’ve been when the phone has rang, it’s been a great job offer and I’m already booked."

He just recently spoke with an art director at LEGO who has asked him to draw another project.

In recent years, Stuart has completed work on graphic novels that accompany movies like “Trick ’r Treat” and “Krampus” and TV shows like “The Walking Dead.” Stuart even drew work for “Man of Steel”—art that ended up on T-shirts and mugs. “There’s always something new. It’s often the situation where the right project sort of pops up.”

Stuart faces plenty of competition. “If you’re lucky enough to make the cut, then you’re very fortunate.” As he travels to national conventions, he not only showcases his work, meets fans and holds seminars but also interviews for future jobs.

Many opportunities have simply arrived while sitting at his table, talking about his work with someone he thought was a fan who was actually an editor. It was one such occasion that led him to drawing Batman and Green Lantern.

Stuart will soon be a guest at the upcoming Indiana Comic Con at the end of April. Currently, he partners with the Nickel Plate Arts Center as a featured artist, and he recently organized the center’s comic-book themed Christmas party. Finally, Stuart helped plan an event at the center called “Comic Book in A Day” where over a dozen artists compiled an 80-page comic book.

But even as Stuart’s opportunities continue to grow, his heart continues to lead him back to where it all began: “Shiver in the Dark.” “It’s always on my mind,” he says, hoping to publish a fourth edition soon. “I know there are people waiting for it, and I’m sorry I’ve kept them waiting.”

Indeed, perhaps it’s these times that are in Stuart’s heart as he travels around the country, meeting publishers and fans: the memory of curling up among old antiques with a crumbling comic in hand, the memory of paging through Batman’s latest adventures and the memory of meeting the Micronaut artist, his childhood hero.
