When we realized it was time for them to downsize, my mom took on the daunting task of clearing out their two story home of more than 30 years. We then helped them through the purchase of a new one-story bungalow, right next door to my mom’s house. Now that they are (very) close by, my mom can help them with whatever they may need as they get older. She is so selfless and always does what needs to be done. She is one of the strongest women I know.

She is a CPA at Anthem Insurance and on the two days a week she has “off,” she takes care of the boys and the house and is a fabulous cook to boot. She is also an avid runner and has run in multiple marathons and half marathons, and will be running in the 2015 500 Festival Mini Marathon. I don’t know where the family would be without her. My guess is hungry, filthy, tired and living in squalor. She does it all.

Coach Damon Bailey remembers how it all began. His father often traveled to weekly basketball games as part of an independent league, bringing his son with him. Tagging along gave Bailey plenty of opportunities to play basketball. He soon found himself with his father practicing dribbling and shooting free throws during half time. “Fortunately for me, it was a game that I fell in love with,” said Bailey. “It was never really a job or work, but it was something I just really enjoyed.”

This love of the game continued as his high school team, Bedford North Lawrence, won the State Championship in 1990 and earned a spot in the Final Four, three out of his four years. To Bailey, it was a “great thrill”

for such a rural school to win such a big championship. His career then carried him on to Indiana University, where his team made the Final Four his sophomore year.

Bailey, an Indiana Mr. Basketball recipient, attributes his success to working hard and minding every detail of the game. “I was fortunate enough to play with many great players,” he added.

Later returning to his former high school, Bailey teamed up with close friend Kurt Godlevske and became the assistant coach of the Lady Stars. Coaching a great group of girls and watching them, along with his daughters, grow up together was a blessing to Bailey. After four seasons and a state championship, Coach Godlevske headed for Butler. Then as head coach, Bailey led the Lady Stars to a second state championship.

Bailey always reminds his players that hard work is what matters. “If you’re gonna play the game, and if you’re gonna do anything, work to be the best you can be. It doesn’t have to be as good as the person standing next to you, but it has to be as good as you can be.”

To his players, Bailey stresses the two “nonnegotiable” words: effort and execution.

Mistakes like turnovers or missed free throws don’t bother him as long as everyone is working hard and, of course, paying attention to the details.

Now, Bailey has teamed again with Godlevske, becoming assistant coach of the Butler Lady Bulldogs. Bailey is excited with

new. As he acquired handmade rugs from places like Pakistan and Nepal, Churchman eventually established his first retail location on Carrollton Avenue and then, recently, at the corner of College Avenue and Kessler Boulevard.

Curt Churchman stands at the corner of Broadway and 42nd Street, in front of the old Kaleidoscope Youth Center (formerly the Broadway Branch Library). As the late afternoon snow falls, Curt chats with a local woman about his vision for the old building. The mission hasn’t stopped with rugs and art. Churchman opens his building to author presentations, painting demonstrations and other community meetings. He donates time, materials and expertise to the art program at IPS School 84 and the Riviera Club.

As Curt stands on the sidewalk and talks with a fellow resident, the snow falls steadily, and his vision’s future is in question. The Meridian Kessler Neighborhood Association has declined to support a variance for the old library, and Churchman tells the woman he’ll know on March 3 if he can move forward on his vision for the building.

Armed with the support of many locals and from community voices — the Indiana Director of Historic Landmarks and the Indiana State Museum among others — Churchman hopes the city will grant his zoning variance request.

With his most recent move to the old youth center, Churchman plans to restore the ‘50s era building. Staining the concrete floor, modernizing the lighting and exposing the ceiling are just some of his plans. Curt is also working to demolish the fence and preserve the adjacent playground for community use.

And like the previous locations, he plans to open his building for community events.

“We are inherently a community use,” said Churchman. "We certainly feel like we’re neighborhood serving."

Joshua Deisler lives with his family in Broad Ripple. He teaches 7th grade language arts and enjoys running and writing stories.

When he’s ready to move on, Churchman is committed to reversing the zoning variance, which he thought would assuage some local concerns. “It’s just so crazy being in a situation where I have to fight for my life,” said Churchman. But he added, “I think we’re gonna win.”

PARKINSON’S PATIENTS FIND THE STRENGTH TO BATTLE THEIR ILLNESS THROUGH BOXING Writer / Kara Reibel

“I like punching things,” said Rock Steady Boxing member and retired teacher Judy Rempala. This is evident by the way Rempala threw her punches into the focus mitts worn by coach Kristy Rose Follmar, a former professional boxer turned head coach and program director at Rock Steady Boxing. Also in the ring is Mary Thiel, former bacteriologist, who took some mean jabs at the focus mitts with Follmar as well.

Mark Caldwell, a retired RN, is punching a double-end bag, which is tethered to the floor and from above. Bill Kuhn, a retired Indiana state policeman and sharpshooter, takes rhythmic punches to the speed bag. Steve Gilbert is doing his cardio rotation on a recumbent bike.

While all of these participants from varied backgrounds are swinging at focus mitts, jumping rope, punching bags, doing core work, cardio and stretching, what they are actually training for is the fight of their lives. All of these boxers have Parkinson’s disease.

“This is an inspirational place to work," Rock Steady Executive Director Joyce Johnson said. "All of our members share the common bond of Parkinson’s, and we see various levels of the presentation of the disease, but all improve when they walk through our door.”

Founded in 2006 by former Marion County Prosecutor Scott Newman after an early onset diagnosis of Parkinson’s, Rock Steady Boxing now has 33 total affiliates in 11 states and three locations internationally. Indianapolis boasts five of these locations around the city.

As Follmar neared the end of her professional boxing career, she was looking for a way of helping others when Scott Newman asked her to join Rock Steady Boxing.

“A career fell in my lap when Scott approached me about being the boxing coach for Parkinson’s patients,” said Follmar. “Thanks to his positive results with boxing, others may now experience those same benefits.”

Not only is Coach Follmar an ideal Rock Steady trainer based on her fitness education and boxing career, but she can relate with the members’ struggle with their depressive tendencies. Follmar started boxing to help release her anger and depression after the death of her father. When Follmar started boxing, she thought anger is what drove her. She realized over time that it is love that motivates her.

Her mantra is “love always wins,” which is tattooed on her forearm.

The program at Rock Steady Boxing is a non-contact, intense boxing-inspired fitness program. The members train just like professional boxers.

“The only difference between us and the professional boxers is that they get to take a day off,” said Steve Gilbert, who shares the Rock Steady story every chance he gets. Gilbert’s 102-year-old father who also has Parkinson’s said, “It’s the only time in my life I have ever taken a swing at a lady.”

“Balance, gait work, vocal training, we do all of it,” said Follmar.

“Parkinson’s patients have a list of symptoms, such as tremors, depression, imbalances while walking and their voices get softer. So we combat these and many other expressions of Parkinson’s with our training techniques.”

“Everything we do is done with intention. For instance, to help with voices, we do a lot of yelling to help the vocal cords,” added Follmar.

“Boxing is a groundbreaking means of helping others with Parkinson’s. It is a way to fight back,” said Follmar. “Every member is inspiring, everyone is unique. Who wouldn’t want to tell their grandkids that they are going to boxing? The members take pride in being hard-core.”

Co-coach Christine Timberlake’s athletic husband, Tom, was diagnosed at the age of 36 with Parkinson’s. “When you are told you have 10 years before you are in a wheelchair, it is devastating.

We went home and basically had a bunker mentality,” shared Timberlake. Tom’s posture and attitude declined as he slid into mid-to-late stage Parkinson’s rapidly over the next six years until he attended a conference with Scott Newman.

This encounter with Newman encouraged Tom to take up boxing as one of the original members of Rock Steady Boxing.

DAVID BINSTADT (Fishers) Retired radiologist Dr. David Binstadt was encouraged to go to Rock Steady by his daughter, Melanie. After six months, he had noticeable improvement.

Melanie is now one of the many volunteers at Rock Steady Boxing. “I give a lot of credit to Kristy Rose, Christine and Marcia Wilson. They are always upbeat and it is a pleasure to be in that atmosphere,” said Dr. Binstadt.

STEVE GILBERT (Fishers)

Gilbert was diagnosed with prostate cancer and Parkinson’s disease within four months at age 59. He started running competitively at the age of 64. “Rock Steady Boxing has been so important in my life,” said Gilbert. “We are so blessed to have this resource here in Indianapolis.” Having run the Mini socially a few times in his 30s, he had not taken running seriously until three decades later. His brother, Bruce, had run marathons for years, so when Gilbert told him he was thinking about running the Monumental, Bruce said he would run it stride by stride with him. The Monumental organizers were so moved by Gilbert’s story, they published it in their race program and online. “I never climbed mountains or ran marathons before Rock Steady,” said Gilbert. While Steve’s brother shows no signs of Parkinson’s, their father was diagnosed with Parkinson’s. Ron Gilbert is 102.5 years old. The retired Associated Press sports writer lives on the west side and attends Rock Steady occasionally. Johnson asked the senior Mr. Gilbert how he has managed to live to 102 and his reply, “You get up every day.”

“In six to eight weeks, I saw my husband stand up straighter, he was smiling again, and he wanted to go out and do things,” said Christine. Inspired by her husband’s progress and those of other members, Christine started volunteering with Rock Steady, now working there full-time.

There are four levels of classes held at Rock Steady. Level one is the least restrictive with the minimal amount of modifications, and level four has participants who are experiencing the most severe expression of Parkinson’s.

“With our level four classes, it is amazing what these participants can do, even from a wheelchair,” shared Johnson, whose mom had Parkinson’s. “Our participants are experiencing real results in staving off their symptoms and improving by fighting it. Literally.”

Follmar and Timberlake are in a unique situation. “We do the initial assessments of new members, then we watch the magic happen as they get into our training,” shared Timberlake.

Follmar added, “We see people on their first visit here. It is a powerful moment because it is the first time they decide that they are going to fight back. We are uniquely positioned as coaches to tell them that they are accepted here, that we have a place for them. The most exciting part is that we know the potential of where they will be."

The promising results from that study showed significant differences in all measured categories including spinal rotation, gait balance and quality of life.

“The results from the group of boxers were higher, in many cases significantly higher, than those who were exercising but not boxing,” said Combs-Miller.

Dr. S. Elizabeth Zauber, a neurologist specializing in movement disorders, knows programs like Rock Steady can help patients.

“Every patient I see, I recommend exercise to them. Those that are active have better control over their symptoms.”

“In the last 10 years, the Michael J. Fox Foundation has invested $300 million looking for a cure and it is still elusive,” said Johnson.

“Rock Steady is about maintaining the highest level of quality of life while we wait for that cure.”

But even without a cure, Rock Steady boxers are going to keep fighting. “We don’t know what the future holds,” said Gilbert.

“We’re not waiting.”

Researcher and Associate Professor at University of Indianapolis Stephanie Combs-Miller, PhD, just completed a two-year longitudinal study including 88 people with Parkinson’s that shows that the boxers in the Rock Steady program maintain a higher level of function than those who do other types of exercise.

BILL KUHN

(Geist) For Bill Kuhn – a competitive pistol shooter for over 20 years who is ranked in the State and has won medals at the Police and Fire Games – the diagnosis of Parkinson’s was devastating. Once this retired Indiana State Police Captain started working out at Rock Steady Boxing, he felt better, citing the positive emotional benefits are not to be understated. “We’re not going to take this; we’re going to fight it,” said Kuhn. And fight it he does. His wife, Joyce Johnstone, said, “Going to Rock Steady gets him moving. Bill is a bright man, and I have noticed an increased cognitive sharpness since he started last August at Rock Steady. If there was ever a day when Bill didn’t want to go to Rock Steady, I’d go with him. I know what a difference it makes to him,” said Johnstone.

MARK CALDWELL (Broad Ripple) Since training with Rock Steady shortly after his diagnosis in 2010, Mark Caldwell has experienced a drastic improvement with his Parkinson’s symptoms. “I feel at home at Rock Steady,” said Caldwell. “I even volunteer to teach classes when needed.” Caldwell was an RN case manager for cancer patients at University Hospital. After working out at Rock Steady, his co-workers noticed that his symptoms improved. After retiring and being able to go to the gym more frequently, he noticed further impressive improvements and he has lost 50 pounds. “My gait stability has improved so much that the only time I have fallen is on ice,” said Caldwell. atBrip.com / MARCH 2015 / BROAD RIPPLE COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER / 13

The building where DeveloperTown resides used to be a manufacturing facility. The prior tenant manufactured housing that was built inside and was shipped out. Ironically, with DeveloperTown’s work model, they have manufactured housing built out and shipped in. Each of the 35 employees, and a few other welcomed groups, have their own small yard barns as office space.

“The inspiration for our progressive office design came from Pixar. Only ours have wheels and are mobile,” said DeveloperTown Managing Partner Michael Cloran.

One can only imagine how proud Scott Jones’ parents were to find out that their son was hired on as a research scientist at MIT’s Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, only to discover that after spending six years at IU, including summers, he had not yet earned a degree. A mere technicality of one economics course and a language requirement was needed for Jones to move to Boston.

The econ credit was completed via correspondence. What is interesting is the manner in which Jones studied for his Spanish language fulfillment exam – by locking himself in his grandmother’s attic for 10 days. Oddly, while immersing himself in his Spanish textbooks, Jones listened to German music.

During his time at IU, Jones applied to study abroad in Hamburg, Germany.

However, Jones was not accepted into the program because he had not done well enough in class. Ironically, while attending MIT, he lived with a family from Hong Kong. There were four generations under one roof speaking Cantonese, which is more challenging to learn than Mandarin.

Jones became mildly fluent in Cantonese conversation through this immersive experience.

The earliest memory Jones has of his extended focused attention was the time when he completely dismantled his journalist mother’s Selectric typewriter and reassembled it, which took all night. “I think it worked all right after I was done with it,” Jones recalled, smiling, from his reverse engineering experience.

This pattern of immersion would continue during the creation of Boston Technology, a voicemail company he co-founded. The hard-working crew barely left their offices, sleeping under their desks, ordering in

carry-out and completely immersing themselves into their voicemail services project. While this did result in a nice liquidity event for Jones, his partner and their investors, the process was not without moments of panic, sometimes expressed by partner, Greg Carr. What concerned Carr was Jones’ constant stream of entrepreneurial ideas.

“While perhaps valid ideas, most of these did not pertain to our project at hand,” said Jones. “And Greg was absolutely right, these were distractions for us.”

Jones knew that in order to achieve what the team of Boston Technology set out to do, he had to get rid of all unrelated distractions.

They vi rtually did not leave the building for two years. His immersion paradigm would prove successful.

Jones needed to somehow release all other percolating ventures out of his head.

“I realized if I wrote these ideas down in journals, I could clear my head and focus,” shared Jones. By writing down his extemporaneous thoughts, Jones was able to declutter his brain and focus.

After the Boston Technology liquidity event, Jones explored those notebooks of ideas. He has been able to “play” in a spectrum of playgrounds. A few results of this are: Gracenote music services which are integrated into every iPhone, ChaCha human-powered search, Precise Path Robotics, Galaxia Lighting, Escient Home Automation, Gazelle TechVentures and now Eleven Fifty Academy.

With the proven success of Jones’ immersive style, this quintessential entrepreneur — with an innate understanding of technology — has repeated this pattern of immersion in everything he does. His process is not without moments of doubt or fear creeping in.

It was a fear of failure that initially delayed him from diving into programming while at IU, but once he immersed himself into coding, he spent most of his time with computers in the basement of the HYPR building.

As challenges arise during Jones’ creative process, Jones focuses on the question, such as, “How can I solve this?” before he would sleep, then awake with an answer.

If this doesn’t work, he goes outside to walk and contemplate the solution.

During the Boston Technology days, Jones hiked around the famous Walden Pond in Concord, contemplating a snag that had arisen and a solution would inevitably surface.

Another coping mechanism that Jones employs is to look at all possible outcomes.

“I mentally fast forward to what’s going to happen,” shared Jones. “I look for what can

be done to prevent as many of the failed scenarios as possible and move forward.”

He has trained himself to take risks.

Back in 2005, Jones co-founded Indy Robotics, LLC, which funded a team of 120 researchers to create an unmanned vehicle in a competition sponsored by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. Of the researchers, about 20 of them spent one month camped out in the Mohave Desert doing nothing but working on their 6,000 pound, autonomous robot vehicle. In truth, there was no other choice. They were in the middle of the Mohave Desert with the closest hotel 45 minutes away.

“The 20 of us made more progress during that month in the desert than the full team of about 100 managed during the prior 18 months leading up to the race,” said Jones.

Jones’ latest collaborative effort, Eleven Fifty Academy, puts immersion into practice. For 12-14 hours a day, for seven days, students are writing code.

What do two high-energy individuals who are passionate about their work consider fun? Investing in startups, consulting with business owners, mentoring, holding Board positions, supporting charitable organizations, traveling and training for triathlons.

Todd Saxton is an associate professor of strategy and entrepreneurship for the IU Kelley School of Business. He is also the 2015 president of the board of directors for the Venture Club of Indiana and Indiana Venture Faculty Fellow. Kim Saxton is a clinical associate professor of marketing at the Kelley school, leads Lean In Circle for women MBA students, and holds a doctorate in statistics. As popular professors, both instruct an unusually high number of classes per year, across a number of Kelley’s leading programs.

Not only are Todd and Kim committed to education, they are involved beyond the scope of their jobs and have immersed

themselves in the venture community.

For example — 15 years ago — Todd sought opportunities to strengthen the relationship between Kelley and the Indianapolis venture community, so he joined the Venture Club of Indianapolis, of which he is now president. Both Todd and Kim are involved with numerous

other organizations, including being board members for Marlon Jackson’s Fight for Life organization, which facilitates social and emotional learning programs for kids.

Entrepreneurs at heart, neither set out to be educators, but eventually tapped into their natural talent in the area, as both have parents that were teachers. The two met as employees of a startup company in D.C., providing competitive analysis and acquisition support for Fortune 500 companies.

The appeal of IU’s doctorate and MBA programs brought them to Indianapolis.

“We were looking for a program that would work with the needs of our growing family,” said Todd. IU won out over several schools, including a few Ivy League options.

Once their girls were older, Todd and Kim made a commitment to each other and set new goals to celebrate turning 50. After years of shorter events, some with their daughters at kids’ triathlons, they decided to train for an Ironman distance event. No small undertaking, this fits right in line with their “all in” modus operandi.

“My parents encouraged me early on to find the activities that I most enjoy and pursue them,” shares daughter Lindsey. “Going to their triathlons has helped foster part of my giving nature. At triathlons, you’re not just cheering on the people you’re there with; you’re supporting every runner that passes you, as well as other spectators.”

Everything that Todd and Kim do is done with intensity and tenacity of purpose. An Ironman race is the pinnacle of a personal fitness challenge, consisting of a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike and 26.2 mile run over the course of one day. Supportive and dedicated, the time spent training only brought Kim and Todd closer.

Todd and Kim are people of initiative and action, engaging and energetic. Whether it is triathlons, corporate ventures, the entrepreneurial community, or teaching, the Saxtons are fully engaged.

The Saxtons note many parallels between the triathlon and venture communities.

Both are made up of supportive, fun, inspiring and very generous people taking on very complex and challenging endeavors; but ones nearly all of us could be successful in undertaking with the right encouragement and training.

“There is an entrepreneur inside of all of us. Depending on circumstance and provocativeness, it can come out at any time,” said Todd.

Luke Andritsch was the official starter of the 2010 St. Vincent Geist Half Marathon & 5K.

I

n early 2010, I received a phone call from a Geist resident telling me about a 5-year-old boy battling leukemia named Luke Andritsch. He was diagnosed on Mother’s Day at the age of 3. Through The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, they had formed a Team in Training group called Team Luke and began running various races around town in his honor. They were talking about running the St. Vincent Geist Half Marathon & 5K, and I thought this would make for a good story for our Geist Community Newsletter.

Arriving at their front door, Luke greeted me donning a Spiderman costume complete with padded muscles. He was short, chubby and nearly bald. Vicky, Luke’s mom, gave me and our longtime photographer Brenda Staples a tour of their home ending in Luke’s bedroom upstairs. Luke was anxious to show us his superhero toys, “get well” letters on his walls, and his stuffed animal toys wearing scrubs and surgical masks.

Vicky told me that trying to explain leukemia to a child is difficult. “We told him that the cancer was a bunch of bad guys in his blood, and the chemo was the good guys going in there to kill them.”

Now the Spiderman suit made more sense.

In many ways, the visit and ensuing story was inspiring. In other ways, it was heartbreaking. No child should have to deal with such a horrific disease as leukemia.

Luke framed his Spiderman costume which now hangs in his bedroom. I’m wearing one of the Team Luke capes which gives whoever wears it superpowers.

It was through the Andritsch family that I learned more about the research work being funded and sponsored by The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. In 2011, Luke was named their “Boy of the Year” and participated in a 10-week fundraising campaign called “Man and Woman of the Year.” After the Grand Finale Gala, the Andritsch family had a party of their own for Luke. His chemo port in his chest was removed that summer and the Team Luke TOWNEPOST NETWORK / MARCH 2015 / TownePost.com

followers and friends hosted a “Port Party” in his honor. Luke was cancer-free and done with chemo.

Last fall, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society called to inform me that I had been nominated to run for the 2015 “Man of the Year.” After seeing how they had helped the Andritsch family and several other friends and neighbors dealing with blood cancers over the years, I accepted the challenge.

Much like a political election, the man and woman who raise the most money during a 10-week campaign (Feb. 26 – May 9) wins the title.

My campaign will look and sound much like a political campaign; after all, we are in primary season. You’ll see campaign posters at restaurants around Indy like Mama Bear’s and Lincoln Square Pancake Houses. You’ll hear my “negative campaign” commercials on various radio stations. You might even spot a political yard sign asking you to “vote against cancer.”

A campaign against cancer is personal to everyone. Only cancers of the respiratory and digestive systems, including lung and colon cancers, are more deadly. Leukemia causes more deaths than any other cancer among children and young adults under the age of 20. One person is diagnosed with blood cancer every three minutes. Every 10 minutes, another person loses the fight.

More than 1.6 million people in the United States are living with or are in remission from a blood cancer.

To date, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society has funded more cancer research than any other voluntary health agency in the United States or Canada. When they started in 1949, the survival rate for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (which is the type of cancer Luke had) was only three percent. Today, thanks to advances in research, the survival rate is more than 90 percent. For other blood cancers, the survival rate has doubled, tripled and even quadrupled. However, one third will not make it five years post diagnosis. We have a long way to go.

On a personal note, I’ve had several friends and family suffer through cancer. My wife and I started a charity event the year we met the Andritsch family called Vines for Life, which raises money for three local cancer charities supporting patients and survivors.

While we’ll continue to help those dealing with the fallout of cancer, this is our one opportunity to get out ahead of cancer and fund the cure. My hope is that we’ll have a cancer-free society in my lifetime.

The parade downtown kicks off a busy day for the Gordon Pipers, who perform a whopping 25 times in one day. A chartered bus transports the Pipers on their whirlwind tour of restaurants, bars and parties.

“Following the parade, each performance on St. Patty’s Day is roughly 20 minutes,” said Charlie Pike, Broad Ripple resident and Gordon Bagpiper. “It’s a long, fun day!”

The Gordon Pipers have been synonymous with the traditions of the Indianapolis St. Patrick’s Day Parade and the Indy 500 Festival Parade since 1963. Tony Hulman, Jr. was so impressed by the Gordon Pipers’ ability to captivate the massive crowd at the Indianapolis Raceway Park the summer before in 1962, he wrote a check for $10,000 for uniforms. This generous contribution readied the group for the 500 race festivities, a tradition lasting 52 years to date.

“This not only started the tradition of the bagpipers performing with the race, but of family traditions,” said Gordon Pipers President Doug Hardwick.

“Founder Dr. Gordon Wallace Diehl started with five members, and it has only grown from there,” adds Hardwick.

All of the Gordon Bagpipers are volunteers. In order to join, you need to know the history of the band, attend a required number of practices and learn an entire repertoire of songs.

“They teach you how to play the bagpipes, and in return, they ask that you attend practices and march in a few parades,” said Pike.

Diehl founded the Gordon Pipers to break down barriers, easing the requirements for membership compared to other bagpipe bands that he found too restrictive. “Only men with height of 6’3”

FUN FACTS ABOUT THE GORDON PIPERS

The sister band for the Gordon Pipers is located in Ingersoll, Ontario (Canada), the birthplace of Dr. Wallace Gordon Diehl.

The Ingersoll Pipers march with the Gordon Pipers every year in the Indy 500 Festival Parade.

One member took his bagpipes to Iraq when he was called to duty.

The Gordon Pipers are the only bagpipe band in the world to wear two different kilts of two different plaids. The Wallace Tartan is worn by the drummers and the pipers wear Dress Gordon Tartan. This is done to honor Dr. Wallace Gordon Diehl, the founder of the Gordon Pipers.

The official patch of the Gordon Pipers had dogs on them, as one of the original members was a veterinarian. Once the Horseshoe Drums and Pipes was formed five years ago, becoming a part of the Colts / Irsay family, the dogs were replaced with horses.

The Horseshoe Drums and Pipes is the only NFL teamsanctioned bagpipe band.

The Indianapolis 500 Museum has an exhibit honoring the history of the relationship of the Gordon Pipers and the 500.

As part of the Pipers / track tradition, there are always four bagpipers in Winner’s circle to welcome the car back, safely, on four wheels. This started in 1965. Drivers Dario Franchitti, who is Scottish, and Jimmy Clark are both honorary members of the Gordon Pipers.

The Tartan Ball is held every year at the Knights of Columbus.

With over three decades of experience, and with the addition of the Horseshoe Pipes and Drums, Ray says he has marched more miles than he can imagine. The Horseshoe Pipes and Drums began five years ago when the Colts asked the Gordon Pipers to become part of their tradition.

“At the ceremony, the school made a big deal about me being in the Army and what I was doing. I was so embarrassed," recalled Anderson, who still turned pink in the cheeks when talking about that day.

Seventy years after serving in Patton’s 3rd Army, U.S. Army Medic Andy Anderson is taking a historic trip back to Germany to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Buchenwald concentration camp.

Interestingly, Anderson spent a portion of his training as a member of the Canadian Armed Forces.

Anderson began his high school education at Cathedral, but after flunking his Latin course, he transferred to Broad Ripple High “You see, the U.S. Army did not want the American people to know School. the kind of training we were doing, so we did this training with Canada,” said Anderson.

“Cathedral was very strict about its athletes passing classes, but Latin was not my strong suit, and I played basketball and baseball,” The training dealt with mustard gas, heavily used by the Germans said Anderson. Before landing along the French coast, Anderson’s unit, the 94th Medical Gas Treatment Battalion, was stationed for a little more than three months in Pontypridd, Wales.

“There were no buildings for housing in Pontypridd, so we stayed with families. I still keep in touch with the family that boarded me,” said Anderson.

Another member of Anderson’s unit, 1st Lt. Howard Doepke recalls, “I was standing in a parking lot in Pontypridd and looked up because the sky was almost black with Allied aircraft heading to Normandy for D-Day.” Anderson and his unit crossed the English Channel, landing at Utah Beach, Normandy, 10 days after D-Day. Assigned to Patton’s 3rd Army, they moved at a brisk pace across the European peninsula.

“Patton was always in a hurry,” said Anderson. “We did not stay anywhere very long if he could help it.”

Anderson would stay with the 3rd Army until the end of the war. Working the front lines, Anderson never carried a weapon, only injured soldiers to the safety of the medic tents.

“We were front line medics, and when I say front line, I mean it,” said Anderson. "We had two anti-aircraft and an ambulance unit attached to our M.A.S.H. unit.”

Anderson’s medical unit also mobilized dogs and sleds with wheels underneath to aid in retrieving the wounded from battle.

“I took care of so many injured soldiers,” said Anderson.

"Many of these kids were only 18 or 19 years old, and I had to help place those that didn’t make it into body bags.”

Anderson recalls being surrounded by the German army while holed up in Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge.

“We went for 10 days without food,” said Anderson. “But I can’t complain. I survived.”

While moving swiftly through Germany, the discovery of a mustard gas depot put Anderson’s intended skills to the test as they disabled the bombs, apparently leftover from a few decades before but still potentially fatal.

“It looked as if it was a backup weapon or something that could be used,” said Anderson.

Another interesting discovery was that the German military had engineered functional jets for combat. “We found a jet under camouflage netting hidden in the forest near a battle site that exceeded the capabilities of our planes at the time,” said Anderson. atBrip.com / MARCH 2015 / BROAD RIPPLE COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER / 39

On April 11, Anderson was part of the 3rd Army that liberated Buchenwald concentration camp, which was one of the largest.

“It was devastating. I was among some medics that stayed to care for those that survived that horrible camp,” said Anderson, who has photos of the atrocities he witnessed.

"You just can’t imagine.”

“Today, the only thing left standing are the ovens and the entrance,” Anderson added.

In contrast, while in Germany, Anderson met performer Marlene Dietrich.

“That was something,” said Anderson with a smile. "She was with the Red Cross and was entertaining the troops, but her main goal was to find her mom, which I believe she did.”

Dietrich, born in Germany, was outspoken against the Nazi party and feared for her family during the War. She immediately volunteered to entertain troops, starting in North Africa, before working her way to Germany to locate her family.

“Doing what I did and seeing the things I saw was quite remarkable for a young man of my age,” shared Anderson of his WWII experiences.

Once Anderson was sent back home, his unit prepared for the invasion of Japan, but the atomic bombs were dropped. “I was grateful for those bombs. As horrible as they were, they did save lives,” said Anderson.

Now at age 92, Anderson is preparing to go back in April to visit Buchenwald to commemorate the 70th anniversary of its liberation.

“I consider myself the luckiest guy in the world," says Anderson. “This trip I get to be wined and dined, which is a nice contrast to what I experienced 70 years ago.”

Adding, “Germany is a beautiful country, and the people are wonderful. They just had a horrible time for a while, and that is long gone.”
