In today’s fast-paced world, it can be hard to find a quick and healthy meal that doesn’t involve fast-food. A new juice bar in Broad Ripple might just be the place to go.

The Garden Table, located on Westfield Boulevard, opened in midOctober. It offers locally sourced juices and foods.

When Jessie Kelley and the two other co-owners of The Garden Table were considering locations for their juice bar, only one place seemed suitable.

“The three of us all grew up in or around Broad Ripple, so we’re very familiar with the neighborhood,” Kelley said. “When we were originally looking at opening a juice bar, we didn’t look anywhere other than Broad Ripple.”

Kelley said the vibe in the neighborhood seemed like the perfect place to settle down.

“It is the place where we like to think new and local businesses can thrive,” she said. “Because of all the local businesses around and how many people live in the area, we knew that it would be a great place to have food, especially breakfast and lunch.”

The menu emphasizes the health benefits of the food and drinks, including medicinal herbs, ancient superfoods and adaptogens.

In addition to be focused on health, the Garden Table also locally sources a large amount of its menu items.

“We’re in an agricultural state, and I don’t think there’s any reasons to be sourcing food grown in our state from other locations,” Kelley said. “We made a decision early on that rather than going through large distributors, we would rather source our food from as many farmers in Indiana as we can.”

Kelley said that while the menu caters to those looking for a healthy diet, there is something for every palette.

“We knew there needed to be a little something for everyone,” she said. “We didn’t want to put ourselves in a niche where we were only doing raw food or green juice. At the same time that we offer local yoga people and people that are active a juice that will power them up for the day, we also want it to taste good.

“We also wanted to be able to provide food for husbands, boyfriends, people’s kids,” she said. “We didn’t want to turn people away by saying we were strictly a raw health-food menu. I think there’s something for everyone.”

The juice bar also emphasizes community involvement. Kelley said the venue is looking to host classes and lectures in the evenings.

“We’re hoping to have some workshops and some how-to’s and some lectures and things like that,” she said. “We’re open to anything. We’re having people email us and reach out to us that want to teach classes there or hold a talk there on a certain topic.

We’re welcoming of all of those things.”

Kelley said that there are plans for speakers to come in soon to speak about essential oils and coconut oils and how to incorporate them into a healthy diet.

While it has only been open for a month, Kelley said the juice bar has seen great support from the community.

“We’re off to a great start,” she said. “The community has been really welcoming, and we’ve had great business and turnout every day. We hope that will continue. We’re really thankful that the neighborhood has embraced us and really been positive about our opening.”

SHOWCASE INDY ENTERTAINS BROAD RIPPLE Writer / Pat Carlini

The Mineshaft Saloon in Broad Ripple typically doesn’t open until 8 p.m. But during my visit for a special Saturday night show in November, there wasn’t a seat left in the house by 7.

It was comedy and country music night by “Showcase Indy,” which is a production company that develops entertainment events in various venues around Indianapolis and especially in Broad Ripple.

“I have found that one of the best formulas to make people happy in Broad Ripple is to present a combination of country music and comedy,” says Executive Director Adrian Brown, who also hosts Showcase Indy events. “The audience seems to really enjoy it. We have maybe a dozen comedians — each doing a few minutes on stage and then a country music band takes over for the night.”

Over the past two years, Showcase Indy has entertained at several venues including Landsharks, The Casba, The Sabbatical, Bleeker Street, Connor’s Pub, and most recently, The Mineshaft Saloon.

Showcase Indy has also put on shows in other venues including

The Beer Fountain, The Rockhouse Café and The Madame Walker Theatre downtown.

Brown says it started as a comedy show, then soon began to grow into a musical variety kind of show which the audiences seem to enjoy the most. “It’s kind of like The Ed Sullivan Show of my day,” says Brown. “It’s a variety show where if you don’t like who is on stage, just wait a few minutes and a new act will come on!”

Showcase Indy grew from another show Brown used to do called “Indy Style,” which was a fashion show that aired on WAVE TV-53 for several years. The show was primarily a fashion show, but there was some music and occasionally some comedy as well.

“We did about 70 shows and then I began to concentrate more on live shows,” says Brown, who then switched to more comedy and music.

“At some point, I’d like to have the show on TV again. The magic I see at the live shows, I think should be shared with a larger audience!”

The 59-year-old says he wanted to be a comedian most of his life but never actually took the stage. So, will he jump on stage himself during a Showcase Indy show?

“Oh, I don’t know,” laughs Brown. “Maybe one day. But, for now I’m just enjoying putting on great fun shows that people enjoy!”

DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORDS “LOVE TRAIN” MURAL Writer / Kara Reibel

Mission Statement: The DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORDS is positive words empowering people. Through the power of words, we build, sustain, and empower communities through strategic arts partnerships, mentorships, events, and education.

The Department of Public Words was started seven months ago by Holly and Dave Combs. Megan Jefferson was then hired as Grants Director. All three artists were brought together by their shared love of positive messages, street art and community.

The Love Train is one of their largest

completed projects, and quite possibly the largest mural in the state.

While meeting with Mike Cloran to discuss a mural for DeveloperTown’s outer wall facing the Monon Trail, DPW was immediately drawn to the opposing wall.

This long wall, which had not been painted since 1999, clearly showed signs of neglect and decay.

DPW immediately contacted the owner of the wall, Herman & Kittle Properties, or HKP. Originally turned down by the Super Bowl beautification grant committee, the wall is the length of two football fields and was deemed “too large a project” by

the committee. HKP did not know if they could repair the beautiful artwork that was originally painted by Broad Ripple High School students 15 years ago. It soon became evident, due to the amount of weathered damage, that they would have to start all over.

Knowing they only had the seasonable weather of summer and fall to get the work done, they worked fast and furious on their plan. Megan immediately went to work on solidifying funding. Funding was secured through a Meridian Kessler Neighborhood Association grant, SmallBox “nice grant,” and Herman & Kittle Properties, Inc.

Herman & Kittle Properties enthusiastically committed to the project. HKP’s philanthropic committee, HKP Cares, approved a donation of $8,000 to DPW for the mural. Thanks to a national contract with Sherwin Williams, they converted their credit of $5,000 for the paint and supplies. Outside of financial support, HKP had more than 70 employees and family members come out for a volunteer day and other days to help DPW on the project.

With a project of this size, stencils would be required. DPW called in a regional expert, StenSOUL street artist, Peat Wollaeger. He consulted on the project and he instinctively knew the mural would be a train, a “love train.” Inspired by the Monon Railway, his visual images were converted into large stencils to transform the wall into a train.

EYEZ, as Wollaeger is known, has a signature “eye” on all of his artwork.

Wollaeger is big on awakening people.

He believes that most people are looking down at their phones and tablets too much and not opening their eyes to their

surroundings. So his iconic eyes are all over the train cars.

The Love Train contains 283 individual pieces of positivity along 44 train cars, including two engines and one caboose, spanning the distance of 600 feet. You cannot see one end from the other. It took five large 4 feet by 8 feet stencils to create one car, plus another stencil for the wheels.

Each train car also includes detailed stencils with different messages such as “Forgive,” “You are Beautiful” and “Amaze Yourself.”

The Jefferson family lives across the street from the Love Train. It is their community and their home. Positive messages create an impact on people who read them, and they have seen proof that their message is wellreceived. “The Speak Easy hosts wedding receptions occasionally and I have seen bridal parties utilizing the Love Train as the backdrop for their photography,” shared Jefferson. There has even been a marriage proposal in front of the message “I love you.”

“It is only with the amazing generosity of private donors and donated supplies and our incredible team of volunteers that we were able to get the work completed on time,” states Jefferson.

Marketing and Public Relations Manager with Herman & Kittle Properties Lauren Brown said, “Our mission is to create value through real estate, and this mural does just that for so many people in the Indianapolis community. We are so proud to have been a part of it.”

Residents and users of the Monon Trail who pass by it are drawn to the messages.

One resident said, “Every time I run by, I see something new.” That is what the Department of Public Words had hoped for, fresh discovery of positive messages by the public.

The logo of the Department of Public Words is meant to look municipal, and the DPW does receive an occasional email regarding a pothole around the city. “Our intention of ‘positive words in public spaces’ is best shared with a fun logo that when people read it, they do a double-take,” says Holly Combs.

Combs knows a thing or two about the impact of positive messages.

She placed “YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL” above the Murphy building in Fountain Square and has painted Y.A.B. in other areas around the city. Always asking permission from the building owner first, Combs has received positive feedback from her messages. She even carries around stickers with Y.A.B. on them that she will pass out to random strangers.

In one such instance, she told a story of how she was driving near 10th and Rural and had an overwhelming feeling she needed to paint “YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL” on the west-facing wall of that intersection immediately.

“I parked my car, went inside the building to ask the business owner if I could paint Y.A.B. on the outer wall and he helped me do it.

He shared with her that he had seen that message a couple weeks prior when he was on his way home to kill himself after breaking his only good leg. He saw her message and had a change of heart.

Combs teaches art to kids in juvenile detention centers. This therapeutic work helps kids create their own positive identity, instead of the labels thrown at them by others. She has overcome life experiences with labels given to her and turned it into a powerful tool for change. Stickers are small things.

“It’s the small things that make a big difference,” says Combs.

Combs was one of the keynote speakers at the recent TEDx Indianapolis event in October. She wants people to see it, feel it and say it. “YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL!”

LIGHTING THE WAY TO SOBRIETY When Amy Temple walked through the doors of The Salvation Army’s Harbor Light Center in April 2013, it was not her first attempt to conquer addiction. This time, though, would be different.

addiction, but each time she would fall off the wagon. “It’s true what they say about life getting worse and worse each time an addict goes back out,” she said. “Mine certainly did. My using ran rampant and completely ruled my life.”

Amy’s story looked much like any other Hoosier’s until about 14 years ago. That’s when she underwent bariatric surgery and developed medical complications during her recovery. Prescription narcotics helped with the pain, but it wasn’t long before Amy became addicted.

After an intervention by family, Amy found herself on the doorstep of the Harbor Light Center for the third time. Though embarrassed and filled with shame, Amy was welcomed with open arms. She saw this as her last chance to reclaim her life.

The facility addresses the medical, psychological, emotional and spiritual needs of its clients. From detox to 12-step classes and “I was never one of those addicts who was in denial about having a problem,” Amy explains. “That was apparent to me fairly early. What counseling to chaplaincy, the program works with each individual I was in denial about was that I could control my using or get clean to create a unique path to a successful recovery. without working any kind of a program or without God in my life.”

“In the months before I came here, I was hopeless and suicidal,” Amy says, revisiting that heartbreaking time. “My family had had Amy began to seek help after more than eight years of active

enough enabling me. They had to love me enough to stop helping me kill myself. My willingness to do something different and their tough love helped to make the difference.”

For the first time, Amy was able to fully embrace the changes that had to be made in order to overcome her addiction. “We have so many clichés in recovery, but one of the things that’s said a lot is ‘you only have to change one thing, and that’s everything’ and that really has been true for me. I feel like everything has changed. I went from having no hope and praying to God to die every single day, to having so much hope for the future, so much hope for what God has in store for me.”

“WE HAVE SO MANY CLICHÉS IN RECOVERY, BUT ONE OF THE THINGS THAT’S SAID A LOT IS ‘YOU ONLY HAVE TO CHANGE ONE THING, AND THAT’S EVERYTHING’ AND THAT REALLY HAS BEEN TRUE FOR ME.”

Now well into her second year of recovery, Amy is still at the Harbor Light Center, but now in a supportive role. She is a Ladies Resident Assistant for the Transitional Housing Program at the facility and teaches several classes for clients going through the 12step program. As a role model for residents, she is able to encourage them in their own difficult journeys.

Amy is thankful for the supportive staff at The Salvation Army who saw her through her darkest days. “I finally have some peace and serenity in my life,” she remarks, before adding, “but God both deserves and gets all the praise and all the glory for my transformation.”

IT’S TIME TO END THE WAR ON FAT Writer / Dr. Christy Watson

How many times have you read or been told that fat is enemy No. 1 and should be avoided? Diets are simply based on calories in versus calories out and all calories were created equal. This was the message given to the public in the early ’80s. The dietary food pyramid was based on grains and carbohydrates, with little fat or protein. It was a diet that was supposed to make us healthier, to lower our risk of heart disease.

Twenty years later the results are in, and the low-fat experiment was a failure of epic proportion. Americans are sicker and more overweight than at any time in history.

Obesity is not just an epidemic;v it’s a pandemic.

There are only three macronutrients – fat, carbohydrates and protein. Our dietary intake of them must equal a total of 100 percent. If we lower one, by definition we have to increase at least one of the others

to keep the total the same. Without fat, something had to be added.

The scientific concept seemed to make some sense – if we limited saturated fats in our diet, then it would reduce “fat” in our bodies in the form of cholesterol. The idea was that we would replace saturated fats with healthy fruits and vegetables. But that wasn’t the case. Refined, processed carbohydrates and added sugars replaced fats that should have been a part of a balanced diet. These carbs were found in wheat bread, low-fat crackers and pasta. These sugars caused our blood chemistry to change, which caused us to store energy and gain weight. This also increased our hunger, which made it even more difficult to lose weight. It created a vicious cycle and has had devastating consequences to our health.

How did this happen? Can fat free bread and corn be sugars? Yes, they can. To our bodies, a low fat bagel is no different than a TOWNEPOST NETWORK / DECEMBER 2014 / TownePost.com

bag of skittles. A calorie is NOT a calorie.

Since 1970, egg consumption is down 21 percent and refined white sugar is down 35 percent. Yet high-fructose corn syrup is up 8,853 percent, and corn products, 198 percent. These are the processed food products that the food industry used to replace fat. In that same period, there was a 42 percent increase in calories from flour and cereals.

As a result, consumers unknowingly increased caloric intake from 2,109 calories per day in 1970 to 2,586 calories in 2010.

From just calories (not even the kind of calorie) alone, if those were extra calories not burned off, this would contribute to ONE pound of weight gain EVERY WEEK! And unfortunately for us, the caloric pie (unlike the macronutrients of fat, protein and carbohydrate) is not one that must remain 100 percent. If we consume more than we need, we store that energy as fat,

which goes right to our waistline. Obesity, Type 2 Diabetes and high triglycerides are the result, and it happens with little to no involvement of “evil” dietary fat!

So what is really going on inside our bodies in regard to proteins, carbohydrates and fats?

Think of your body’s metabolism as a fire.

It has to be stoked to keep the fire going.

If it doesn’t, then it starts to die down. We can stoke the fire in different ways. When we give our body sugar, we get a quick burst of energy, and our body uses some of this for basic functioning of our organs. The rest – usually quite a bit – gets stored. This is quick fuel for our cells. When this quick energy is used up and put in storage, our body thinks it is starving because there is no usable energy around. It tells our brain that it needs more energy, that we are hungry; even though we just ate and there was plenty of energy there. Therefore, we are constantly hungry and storing away more energy. And we never burn the extra because we never force our body to use an alternative fuel source.

When sugars are withheld from the diet, and we stop living on quick sugar metabolism, our body quickly figures out that it needs a fuel source. It turns to the most abundant supply of energy all of us have – our fat cells! This is called nutritional ketosis. And remember, in keeping with the 100 percent total for macronutrients, if one goes down, at least one other must go up.

This is where protein comes in. In simple terms, proteins have the same caloric energy as carbohydrates. But they have a drastically different effect on our metabolism.

First, we actually burn some calories just digesting protein. Second, proteins provide building blocks for our cells, especially muscle. Third, and in my opinion most important, protein is the best appetite suppressant we have. Protein fills our stomach, and sends a true signal of satiety or “fullness.” Now this isn’t saying that you can eat more protein than you can burn, because it all gets stored if it is in excess, but it does not stimulate the quick sugar metabolism like carbohydrates.

Where does dietary fat fit in? There has always been evidence that fat was not the

problem. The Mediterranean diet includes healthy fats like olive oil, and has been proven to have many heart-healthy and waist-healthy benefits. It is a diet espoused by reputable medical groups such as the Mayo Clinic. It has been referenced in study after study as a healthy diet. Meta-analyses of even saturated fat in the diet have failed to unequivocally prove that it alone causes higher levels of heart disease and death. On the contrary, there is mounting evidence that added sugar in the diet has a direct and linear relationship to higher levels of cardiovascular disease and death.

So how can a consumer keep it all straight?

How can we guide our own diets and those of our families? First, read every label. The label on the back of the package, not the one on the front from the marketing department of the food company. And know what you are putting in your body. Just for fun, journal everything you eat in a week to get an idea of your actual caloric (energy) intake, and look at where those calories come from.

Are they sugars, flour, and processed foods?

Finally, do a little research yourself. Don’t rely on the government, the food industry or even the diet industry to safeguard your

The 11-year-old business has seen lots of growth, as Fortville will be their ninth location. And the business hopes to still grow, but Dowless has his own ideas for what the secret to success is.

“The secret is the people that work here and the food is pretty amazing,” said Dowless.

uring the holidays, college students return home during their mid-year breaks to reunite with families and friends.

It’s also a time when Naval Academy Midshipmen return from Annapolis and convene for the annual Indiana All Academies Ball with fellow military families from Indiana.

Navy IU tailgate

This year’s chairperson of the event, Jose Alejos, has strong ties to the military and happens to live in one of the officer’s homes at historic Fort Benjamin Harrison. Alejos enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1979 and served 10 years. Following their father’s footsteps, his sons Marco and Andres graduated from Lawrence North High School and then were accepted into the Naval Academy and West Point respectively.

“It’s very difficult to get accepted at the academies,” said Alejos.

“Over 60,000 high school graduates apply to the academies every year with only about 3,500 getting accepted.”

Not only do applicants have to have good grades and show leadership capabilities, they also must submit letters of recommendation from U.S. Senators and Congress just to be considered for the program.

Central Indiana touts a high number of active U.S. Naval Academy and Merchant Marine “Midshipmen” as well as “Cadets,” and from the other three academies including Air Force Academy, United States Military at West Point and the Coast Guard Academy. There are 280 Hoosier Cadets and Midshipmen including those attending the associated prep schools, which will be returning home during the holidays. And while Alejos and his family love to spend time with his enlisted sons, he openly admits “they are our sons, but they belong to the USA.”

Last year during the Navy’s sequestration, Navy Midshipmen were not allowed to fly on military planes to their away football games, including the Sept. 7 game against Indiana University. Parents of the midshipmen started reaching out to military families raising money on short notice to prepare for a tailgate event. Indianapolis Colts

owner Jim Irsay was one of the first donors to help fund the tailgate event, which attracted over 1,200 people.

“It was the largest tailgate ever hosted at IU,” said Alejos.

Dignitaries from the U.S. Navy and Department of Defense were so moved by the outpouring of support, they attended the tailgate and signed a football to give to Irsay as a token of their appreciation. The Colts owner has also sponsored the annual Indiana All Academies Ball among other military causes and functions.

Military families and applicants to the academies are invited to the annual ball on Dec. 26 at The Crane Bay Event Center, located at 551 W. Merrill St. in Indianapolis.

Justice Steven David will be the keynote speaker highlighting an evening featuring a plated dinner and dancing. Reliant PCR partners Tom Willey, Scott Lindenberg, Ron Foster and Melissa Wilmoth all have strong ties to the Broad Ripple area and wanted to reinvest locally instead of seeking office space elsewhere.

“I live close by and love the pocket areas of mixed commercial use around us – 49th & Penn, 56th & Illinois, and the Kessler & College area just south of the main Broad Ripple zone,” said Willey.

“It is one of those places we felt we could improve and invest in.”

Seeking a sophisticated office space, the Reliant group decided to build their own to enhance the area. Given their shared love of the area, Reliant PCR sought the experienced and progressive design architectural firm, ONE 10 STUDIO Architects. Lindenberg said, “Having outgrown our current space, we looked around and wanted to reinvest in Broad Ripple.”

The two-story office project presented some challenges for the architectural firm. “The location is a transitional space between residential and commercial applications,” said architect Patrick Kestner. “We pulled in elements from each of the

neighboring properties to blend the building into the fabric of the neighborhood.”

The architectural renderings depict this fluid cohesion, drawing in elements of both the commercial Fox building to the south and the residential homes to the north. These visual elements included in the design will allow the building to blend beautifully into the area.

Property Manager Melissa Wilmoth is looking forward to their new office, “I enjoy the convenience and character of Broad Ripple for the easy access to work and play. The restaurants and conveniences close by are hard to beat.”

The first floor will be occupied by a single tenant, Ameriana Bank, and Reliant will fill the second floor with another tenant and/or individual office suite users.

Thoughtful consideration went into the building’s energy efficiency as well as its design. Materials used for the construction are of the highest quality. Utilizing “green” wall and roofing panels from Thermocore, Inc., the building promises to be extremely energy efficient.

“It is important to provide an innovative design in regards to the overall aesthetics, but to incorporate available technologies that establish comfortable, energy efficient structures that contribute and sustain its vitality for the long term life of the project,” said Kestner. “The use of Structural Insulated Panel Systems (SIPS) for the exterior wall and roof framing provides a highly insulated building envelope that exceeds code minimums by more than double.”

Another added feature of these structurally insulated wood panels is their acoustical value, which will help mitigate traffic noise on adjacent College Avenue.

“In building this structure, we wanted to invest in Broad Ripple and create a dynamic, sustainable office environment,” says Lindenberg.

ndy CD & Vinyl is full of surprises.

Owners Annie and Andy Skinner, along with partner Eric Davis, have created a fun, family environment where you can shop for vinyl and CDs, watch a concert, or bring your kids for fun events.

“When we bought the shop last January, we wanted to put our own personal expression into the store,” says Annie, who has managed the store for the past 15 years. “We already loved the store but wanted to make some cosmetic changes to enhance the customer experience.”

Given that Annie is an experiential designer, the remodeling was natural for her. “Fun is our modus operandi,” she said. “The shop must be fun.” An experiential design incorporates the senses with movement, flow and visual elements. Posters were removed from the windows, allowing in more light, the aisles were widened, and the stage was enlarged for events and for kids to play.

“We have families that come in and shop together,” said Annie. “Parents feel comfortable with their kids in here while they search for music.” The Skinners have lived in the Broad Ripple area for a long time, adding a new music fan to their family last year, their 18-month-old son, Liam. atBrip.com / DECEMBER 2014 / BROAD RIPPLE COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER / 41

The last Sunday of each month is a family event for all ages, featuring Mr. Daniel. The festivities start at 3 p.m. with a playdate atmosphere. The kids are first engaged in a craft project such as spin art, and the performance is from 4 – 5 p.m. Mr. Daniel provides instruments for kids ages 6-months to 5-years-old to play along. Due to the holidays, mark your calendars for his next performance at the end of January.

The list of bands that have performed at Indy CD & Vinyl is extensive. Performances of groups normally coincides with a concert and promotion elsewhere and adds a nice visit to a record shop as part of their tour.

“Annie and I make up A-squared, a promotions company,” says Andy.

Sometimes the artists are their clients, and all of the groups enjoy the shop. “We are members of the CIMS, Coalition of Independent Music Stores, which promotes

a grassroots, local feel for patrons of music stores,” says Andy.

Patrons who share an affinity for vinyl are not necessarily vintage enthusiasts. The resurgent popularity of vinyl is influenced by many factors. One factor is the richer sound experience with an LP, and there is something undeniably nostalgic about a record. Perhaps it is the tactile experience of holding a vinyl album that adds a tangible element that is not achieved with CDs and digital downloads. And surprisingly, many of the new buyers of vinyl are too young to recall the switch to CDs. “Staying power – this is what vinyl has proven with the recent 800 percent increase in sales over the last couple of years,” says Annie. That statistic may be a bit of an exaggeration but not by much.

With a steady turnover of their inventory,

Indy CD & Vinyl buys a lot of vinyl LPs. “We have two vinyl buyers on staff, so one or both of them are always here to help our customers,” says Annie.

Blending into the local retail and music scene, Indy CD & Vinyl is indicative about what makes Broad Ripple a destination: its local focus. The shop feels like a community center, revolving around the love for music.

y first trip to Piney Acres Farm was exactly what I had envisioned upon planning the visit — a beautiful, crisp December afternoon and that indescribable holiday scent. This year, my second trip to Piney Acres Farm was on a cold and rainy Tuesday, Veterans Day coincidentally.

Following the gloomy drive through Hancock County, my mood quickly changed when I arrived at Piney Acres Farm and talked to the owner, Rex Zenor, about their efforts to help U.S. soldiers and their families.

For the past seven years, Piney Acres Farm has contributed hundreds of Christmas trees to a national program called Trees for Troops. Trees for Troops is a special initiative Indiana consistently sets the standard for and Piney Acres has played a pivotal role in the process.

Trees for Troops is a program of the Christmas SPIRIT Foundation, which provides free farm-grown Christmas Trees to United States armed forces members in all branches of the military and their families. The program is made possible through donations, sponsorships, grants and the work of volunteers. FedEx, a huge partner in the mission, delivers these trees to more than 60 military bases both in the U.S. and overseas.

Piney Acres is one of 450 Christmas Tree growers who donate to Trees for Troops. Zenor added that Indiana is leading the way in the Trees for Troops program, calling it the “nation’s kick starter.” Each year before Christmas, the local National Guard picks up the trees from Piney Acres and delivers them to the central location in Boone County for FedEx packaging and travel. The process may experience roadblocks, Zenor mentioned, but Trees for Troops will “make sure the soldiers and families get their trees before Christmas.”

To contribute to Tree for Troops, you can select a tree at Piney Acres and write a personalized note, or you can make a monetary donation online.

Other local tree farms that contribute to Indiana’s leadership in the Trees for Troops program are Yakey Tree Farm in Fishers and Dull’s Tree Farm in Thorntown.
