DAN WAKEFIELD

When I first moved back to Indianapolis in November 2011, the Borders bookstore downtown was closed and empty. Walking by it was like walking by a ghost – maybe The Ghost of Christmas Past. I felt like a city without a bookstore in its vital center was like a city without a soul. It seemed especially sad for Indianapolis, capital of a state known for its tradition of literary riches – names that enhance Indiana history like Lew Wallace, Jean Stratton Porter, Tarkington, Riley, Janet Flanner, Lockridge, Vonnegut, all the way to John Green.

When someone imagines an act that has never been done before, an innovation that enhances and enlivens the community it serves, that is a vision. Making the vision a reality is an act of faith, courage and enterprise.

The following summer brought the good news that a new bookstore was opening on Mass Ave. called IndyReadsBooks. It was the brainchild of Travis diNicola, director of the Indiana literacy program, Indy Reads.

The bookstore brought more vitality downtown and became a center and home for writers, readers, readings, talks and sometimes even music and films. The announcement of the opening in The Indianapolis Star was like a jolt of energy to me, and I volunteered at once to give a reading. I was welcomed

by Travis who became a good and trusted friend, a bright light in my return to home.

He’s one of those special people who seems to exude energy and radiate good will, good times, new possibilities and hope.

A year ago, he took the bookstore to a new dimension by publishing its own book – a collection of stories, essays and poems by local authors called IndyWritesBooks. I do not know of any other bookstore in the U.S. that published – on its own initiative

Though I’m several decades older, it was natural to talk about anything and know I was understood. We never really talked about deeply personal matters, yet our conversations always seemed meaningful, more important than the words exchanged.

Travis is one of the great listeners – you know he really hears you, he “gets it,” not only what is said but what is unsaid, what doesn’t need to be said.

Usually, when we talk to someone, we are thinking at the same time of what we want to have for dinner or whether we need a haircut or when the rent is due. We know the same thing is happening when we tell our concerns or our plans to someone else – their mind is probably elsewhere as they smile, nod and glance at their cellphone or listen to its ring or whistle. Travis is one of those rare people who makes himself fully present when you talk with him and pays you the compliment of really listening as if what you say matters.

We talked and drank at The Crossroads and The Red Key, and every Friday morning for many months, we talked over coffee at Moe and Johnny’s. As the phrase goes, I knew “he had my back.” The news that he was leaving – returning with his brilliant wife Michelle, who I also count as a friend, to their own home ground in Pennsylvania – hit me like a meteor. Hard as it is to admit, I felt unprotected. Vulnerable. It felt like a cold wind was blowing. My thoughts turned to loss.

BRIGHT IDEAS IN BROAD RIPPLE

Chances are if you’ve lived in Broad Ripple for a while and walked north along the Monon Trail, you’ve probably seen the Bright Ideas in Broad Ripple building. Its big red awning with the Bright Ideas logo is hard to miss in the mostly residential neighborhood.

The CEO Beverly “Bev” Middaugh and her son wouldn’t have it any other way. This unique local business serves at least 1,000 suppliers with nearly 250,000 quality customizable products. With easy access from the Monon Trail and plenty of space with a huge showroom, they have all the perks of the pedestrian traffic of the Broad Ripple Strip from the trail but less traffic and more parking!

Bev is truly a person devoted to the custom printing business and proud of how far it has come. She also loves all the relationships she had built after 30 years of being in Broad Ripple. “I love that I get to see old friends who stop by that I haven’t seen in years!”

Before Bev had the bright idea (pun intended) to go into business for herself, she was a working single mom in her 40s, but her job was in the male-dominated field of sales. “I believe that as a single woman looking to support herself, sales is the best place to start,” Bev says. “You have more control and can write your own ticket.”

She also is heavily involved in local charities. “Everyone needs promotional materials!” she said. “We always give to the charities we serve, and this business is a way for me to do something good that I wouldn’t have been able to do normally.” One of the charities that Bright Ideas helps is the Catherine Peachy Fund, a Breast Cancer Research Fund. Bright Ideas helped put out a free cookbook to help honor that organization.

Garden Party Botanical Hard Soda is the latest beverage venture by Indianapolis entrepreneur Erin Edds. A native of Zionsville, Erin grew up around the restaurant and catering business, first helping her mom's catering business, and later as Erin worked in various roles throughout the restaurant industry.

Erin’s first venture was Country Mouse, City Mouse which she started with her sister, Katy Williams in 2008. They sold artisan

dips and spreads at local farmers markets, and select local retailers including Whole Foods. In 2010, after receiving a call from an event planner in New York City who was looking for Indy-specific items to feature in gift baskets for their clients suites at the Super Bowl, Erin met the challenge and decided to create a new product. As a result, Hoosier Momma Bloody Mary Maker was born.

After selling out their first production run in just two weeks, instead of the three months she anticipated, Erin knew Hoosier Momma Bloody Mary Maker was a hit. After securing investors and forming Hoosier Momma 14 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2016 / atBRip.com

LLC, the company grew from local farmers markets to distribution in 19-states in four years. The brand received national exposure, including in the LA Times calling it the best Bloody Mary mix in their 40 years of research. Hoosier Momma was also featured in TIME, Chicago Tribune, Midwest Living, and won multiple awards.

Erin sold her interest in the company to her investment partners in 2015 and is now applying her experience and market knowledge towards a new product, Garden Party Botanical Hard Soda. This time, she is partnering with her husband, Stephen, who

The genesis for Garden Party came as Erin was doing some consulting work for restaurants. As the couple would toss around ideas for their next venture, in September of 2015, Erin sent Stephen a prophetic text that simply read, “the wine cooler grows up”.

Stephen got chills, intuitively knowing that lightning had struck for the second time.

The hard soda market is the fastest growing segment of the alcohol industry, and Garden Party is introducing a premium element to this increasingly popular category. Bridging the gap between craft beer and wine, Garden Party Hard Soda plays a pivotal role is that their drinks are all natural, and have a low sugar content compared to what is currently being consumed.

“With Hoosier Momma, one of the biggest differentiation points that we found was that we had the lowest sodium content in the market and consumers were desperately seeking that out,” shares Erin. “We are finding the same problem in the hard soda market with excess sugar, artificial sweeteners, and artificial flavors.”

Initially, Garden Party Botanical Hard Soda is releasing two flavors, Ruby and Violet. Ruby is a powerful ginger soda infused with hibiscus and pomegranate. “Ruby makes a killer shandy with a wheat beer or pale ale, or an incredible twist on a Moscow Mule with either vodka or bourbon,” says Erin. “With its strong flavor, we see Ruby having huge success with Millennials who have single handedly been responsible for the recent success of brands like Fireball Cinnamon Whisky.”

Violet is a crisp, light and refreshing lemon soda infused with lavender and blackberries. “Drink it on it's own, mix it with sparkling wine, or mix with Deep Eddy Lemon to create a fresh and festive cocktail,” says Erin of her Violet hard soda.

WINE, ART, MUSIC AND MICROBREWS Many Indianapolis metro residents are familiar with Taxman Brewing and Mallow Run Winery. However, the wines and microbrews of Johnson County extend well beyond those two. The county is home to more than five microbreweries including Oaken Barrel, one of the original brewers in the state.

Nearly 20 brewers and wineries from around Indiana will come together to celebrate Indiana’s wine, art, music and microbrews at WAMMfest at Craig Park in Greenwood Saturday, August 20.

This year, WAMMfest features 10 breweries, nine wineries, a large number of restaurants, food trucks, live music and more than 70 artist booths in a juried art

fair. The juried art fair ensures that only Indiana’s finest artist and craftspeople will fill Artists Alley featuring jewelry, painting, sculptures, baskets, clothing and more. Live music includes acoustic acts, a string quartet, jazz and a selection of retro and contemporary bands.

In its first seven years, WAMMfest has become a wonderful way to spend a Saturday, attacking more than 6,000 people annually from all around the metro area. The event, organized by the Sertoma Club of Greenwood, has resulted in $450,000 being donated by Sertoma for local causes and charities.

HOTEL TANGO WHISKEY, BRAVO! Owners Travis and Hilary Barnes Discuss Whiskey, Law School and Aviation

H

otel Tango is the first artisan distillery in Indianapolis, located along Virginia Avenue in Fletcher Place. It’s also the first craft distillery that is service-disabled veteran-owned in the United States, and they have several employees with military experience.

The name is derived from the International Radiotelephony Spelling Alphabet, commonly known as the NATO phonetic alphabet, honoring Hilary and Travis Barnes’ first names. “Each of our liquors is named using the military alphabet, and ‘whiskey’ is the word for W, so that name does not have a NATO word in front of it, like Romeo Rum or Victor Vodka. It’s just Whiskey,” shares Travis.

Travis and Hilary met as students at the IU Robert H. McKinney School of Law. At that time, Hilary was working on earning her pilot’s license. She grew up in Indianapolis, graduated from Lawrence Central High School and attended IU Bloomington followed by law school. Her father is an avid pilot, and Hilary developed a love of flying at a young age.

Travis grew up Albion, Indiana, near Fort Wayne. He interrupted his undergrad education at IPFW to enlist in the Marines. Travis served three tours with the First Recon division as one of the first teams into Iraq via Kuwait in 2003, entering Fallujah. His other tours included Ramadi in 2004, and he saw more action in 2006.

After serving with the Marine Corps, Travis completed his undergraduate degree while earning his pilot’s license. He then moved to Indianapolis for law school. During a weekday, Hilary was scheduled to maker her first solo cross-country flight, which consisted of flying from Indianapolis Regional Airport to Bloomington, then on to Terre Haute with a return flight back to Indy Regional. Her flight into Bloomington was smooth, the take off from Bloomington to Terre Haute was uneventful and then something happened. All of her instruments started going down.

Hilary squawked the emergency code for “lost all electrical.” “I kept muttering a prayer of ‘please don’t let me end up on the news,” says Hilary of the tense flight.

“I made a joke about ‘If I don’t show up in class’ on Wednesday,” shares Hilary, who walked into class half an hour late with the blood drained out of her face. She knew if she had not gotten back up in the air behind the controls that same day, she may not have flown again. Due to the need to complete her cross-country solo flight, another plane was flown out to her to fly.

During the following summer, Travis became proficient with distilling alcohol.

The idea of opening a distillery was tossed around. In 2013, a short window of opportunity for an Indiana state artisan distiller’s permit, which allowed for craft spirit manufacturers to sell directly to consumers, opened.

Invited to a private scotch tasting inside the exclusive University Club, Travis shared a sampling of what he had been Law school became the vehicle they needed, making in the backyard. The building that is now Hotel Tango along Virginia Avenue had been boarded up for nearly 30 years. Keeping much of the integrity of the building construction as possible, Hilary, Travis and their team got to work stripping layers of paint off the walls and cleaning out every inch of the facility.

Lead paint was removed from windows, allowing light to enter. Hilary researched the building’s history and discovered it was built by Henry C. Vehling in 1906. An area for horse stables and carriages was in the back of the building with a hayloft upstairs. The front originally served as a funeral parlor.

Original construction elements such as exposed beams and brick complement the decor. The crowd is eclectic, and there’s Wi-Fi, so the vibe feels more like a coffeehouse with adult beverages.

Due to area laws for business hours, Hotel Tango operates daily from 2-10 p.m. with patrons able to purchase bottles for carryout every day of the week.

All distillation is done onsite. The process begins with Indiana grain, which is corn. Sugar, water and yeast are added, and the mixture ferments for five to six days. It then gets pumped directly into the still. At this moment, the alcohol content is 8-10%. Once in the still, the alcohol vaporizes at 170 degrees for five to six hours, leaving 70-90% pure alcohol content.

The finishing processes creates a variety of bottled liquors, including Victor Vodka, Mike Moonshine, Lima Charlie Limoncello, Romeo Rum, Golf Gin and Oscar Charlie Orangecello. Once out of the barrel, the craft liquor is bottled, labeled and boxed up to sell. Currently, Hotel Tango spirits are available for purchase in 300 locations across Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio and Michigan.

Hotel Tango has yet to release its Whiskey, which is currently in barrels. “When it’s ready, it’s ready,” says Travis, who indicates that the aging process for whiskey bourbon is a matter of personal preference.

In keeping with distillery traditions, Hotel Tango has a distillery cat named Fletcher. The most famous distillery cat is linked to the Glenturret distillery in Scotland where a statue was erected to celebrate Towser the Mouser. Towser is in the Guinness Book of World Records, credited with killing 28,899 mice. Fletcher keeps the grain well protected and socializes with the patrons on occasion. No word on how many kills Fletcher has racked up thus far, and he may have a co-worker soon. Hotel Tango is opening up a second facility with expanded production off 16th Street and the Monon.

“We will have event space at the new location,” says Travis. “The new building can accommodate more people and more parking and has a great view of downtown.” Their second location is scheduled to be open and operational by the end of this year. “We Serve All,” adds Travis. “Except anyone under age, naturally.”

A Purdue University Exercise Science and Humanities graduate, Thrasher-Rudd has owned several fitness studios and is most

known for her present location Studio 49 Fitness, an “Urban Chic” 2,000 square foot facility in the Meridian-Kessler neighborhood.

Studio 49 Fitness is the flagship location for The CRT Method, a technology that she created in 2011 and now is in over 10 studios in more than 5 different states. “I wanted to design a product that was a great overall body workout” says Thrasher-Rudd, “The resistance bands connect overhead and also to the baseboard allowing you to get a cardio workout, strength, balance, and core all in one. It is the only workout device you’ll need.”

The CRT Method is unique in that all movements require abdominal engagement throughout the 45 minute session. Cardio is incorporated through continual movement that is syncopated to a pumping music soundtrack chosen to keep you motivated.

Her inventive technology is multi-functional in its foundation allowing it to be used in the medical field across Indiana for rehabilitation where it is known as MRT (Medical Resistance Therapy). Patients are able to do movements and even bounce using the MRT allowing them strength building options that were not possible before. “I love what I do because it makes me feel good.

I’ve always been a giver, it comes from the heart and knowing that I’m helping others with my knowledge is a way of giving back,” she says with a smile.

Danielle McDowell, entrepreneur and Executive Director of The Speak Easy, opens up about family, her entrepreneurial success and running Indiana’s first coworking space.

After graduating from Notre Dame with a degree in business administration and marketing, McDowell moved to Indianapolis where she met her husband, Jonathan McDowell, Park Tudor Summer School Director and golf coach. The couple has two young children.

McDowell was the 11th employee to join Scott Jones’ company, ChaCha, where she worked for three years on the marketing team during the early inception phase.

After leaving ChaCha, McDowell worked with BitWise Solutions where she met Janell Shaffer. This relationship would prove pivotal for both women.

Shaffer was noodling on an idea for a company based upon the Angie’s List model but for hair stylists. Shaffer wished to ease the frustration experienced when attempting to track down a stylist after

the stylist changed salons as it was nearly impossible to find out where they moved to without hiring a private detective.

Shaffer wished to create a database for reviews and contact information for hair stylists that would remedy this problem.

During this time, McDowell had her first child, and she and Shaffer would close the door and discuss the details of this plan while McDowell pumped.

Coincidentally, both McDowell and Shaffer were leaving BitWise, each with job offers, but decided to build upon the stylist idea and founded My Best Friend’s Hair, a find-a-stylist and beauty blog. With a free listing service and premium memberships available by subscription, the site caught on in popularity with stylists and their clientele.

In addition to My Best Friend’s Hair, Shaffer and McDowell came up with a solution to aid beauty suppliers from the “grey” market of non-licensed beauty supply retailers selling product that they are not allowed to carry. The result was loxabeauty.com. Their idea was timely, and after six months, they were acquired by a subsidiary of Sally Beauty Holdings.

After the liquidity event, McDowell wished to spend more time with her children, taking some time off. She lasted a week and a half.

“The opportunity to apply for the position of Executive Director of The Speak Easy was well-timed,” shared McDowell. “It was competitive to get the job, and it allows me the ideal environment in which to work as well as the convenience of being close to home with regular hours.”

To date, The Speak Easy has launched 170 companies out of their doors, many of whom are still members in order to utilize space for board meetings and events.

Coincidentally, McDowell and Shaffer had been members while they launched My Best Friend’s Hair.

“There’s a lot of serendipity with being Executive Director of The Speak Easy,” shares McDowell. “Gravity Ventures (now High Alpha), which was an investor in My Best Friend’s Hair, hosted a launch party here at The Speak Easy. And we held our board meetings here. We (My Best Friend’s Hair) all worked from home, so whenever

we needed to meet with anyone, we would utilize The Speak Easy.”
