According to City Councilor Colleen Fanning, a tentative plan is in place

to turn Broad Ripple Avenue into a replica of Georgia Street downtown. Georgia Street was redesigned in 2012 with the capability to be transformed into a three-block event space for city-wide festivals, art shows, concerts and conventions.

Retail employees in Broad Ripple seem largely optimistic about the street closure.

“After the first day I was like, ‘This is fun what if it was always like this?’”, says Sammy Pfaff, a Pitaya employee.

Fanning says Broad Ripple Avenue is overdue for infrastructure improvement.

There are plans for updating drainage and widening sidewalks beginning in early 2021.

Improvements to the avenue will make it easier to host outdoor events such as concerts and festivals.

Broad Ripple Avenue closures are expected to last through the July 4th weekend, in conjunction with the city’s summer reopening plan and Marion County Public Health Department orders. As businesses

reopen, social distancing is still encouraged to ensure public safety.

In 1970, Dan Wakefield’s novel “Going All The Way” was published. More than 20 years later, it was adapted into a screenplay and movie starring Jeremy Davies, Ben Affleck and Rachel Weiss.

This month marks a golden anniversary for the book.

The movie was released just before “Good Will Hunting”, and was one of Affleck’s early movies. At the time, Wakefield was able to get Affleck to voice the audiobook.

“Going All The Way” is a novel that almost wasn’t. When Wakefield initially pitched his idea for the novel to his publishers, he was met with strong discouragement. Their reaction only fueled his desire to see it through.

told that I was a journalist, not a novelist,” Wakefield says.

At the time of this meeting, Wakefield had two best-selling books under his belt.

Wakefield shopped his manuscript around and it ended up in the hands of Kurt Vonnegut’s agent, who shared it with Vonnegut. Wakefield and Vonnegut are Shortridge High School alumni, and they graduated ten years apart. After reading the novel, Vonnegut reportedly told his agent to “add him to our stable.”

Wakefield humored his friends and later confessed that the film crew went to the Herron School of Art and asked a class to compete in producing the ugliest modernist painting. Fortunately, Vonnegut was incorrect in his satirical review of “Going All The Way”, which appeared in LIFE magazine. He surmised in the review that Wakefield would not be able to ever show his face in Indianapolis again, forced to forever watch the Indy 500 on television.

“It’s the only book review I have ever seen that uses the word ‘putrid,’” Wakefield jokes.

In truth, Vonnegut and Wakefield were great friends, and Vonnegut never passed up an opportunity for his classic sardonic banter. Not only does Vonnegut use the word “putrid”, but he also gives his “word of honor” that the book is worth reading. It sold more than a million copies.

A few years ago, nostalgic fan Will Higgins organized a bus tour of the local sites where the movie was filmed. The locations included Broad Ripple High School’s outdoor track, Shortridge High School, what is now Herron High School, and the Red Key Tavern. For filming inside the Red Key, some model planes were removed to reflect the accuracy of the post-Korean War era.

Ryan Hasbrook and Jeff Weiser started their company, Eight Eleven Group, in the basement of a small bungalow on Norwaldo Avenue in the heart of Broad Ripple. The vibe of Broad Ripple was engrained in their culture from inception. The small, lean team hustled each day, then grabbed pizza or wings and a beer in the evenings after long, gritty days. This work ethic began to pay off.

Once they outgrew their space, they moved their offices across the street, quite literally, to an office behind the now Huntington Bank building. This pattern started a trend.

After exhausting all available office space in the area, including the old Broad Ripple Library, they had no choice but to look elsewhere.

Eight Eleven Group leased the most accommodating commercial space available closest to Broad Ripple, which was at Keystone at the Crossing. Yet, they still have their offices spread out among a few buildings in the complex.

“We did not want to leave the Broad Ripple area, but we had no choice,” says Hasbrook, who grew up here with Weiser. “It’s home to us and we couldn’t wait to return.”

Eight Eleven Group has three divisions: Brooksource, Medasource, and Calculated Hire. With 31 offices in 25 states, their company is coast to coast from Seattle to Boston, and Tampa to Phoenix, with locations at all major cities in between. Eight Eleven Group has experienced a 23% annual growth rate since its inception in 2000. They have a workforce of 8,000 consultants, with 650 salaried employees. Approximately 150 of these employees are located here, in Indianapolis, at their main HQ. “What Broad Ripple needs is more office space, which means high-paying, stable jobs to our tech presence,” says Colleen Fanning, Executive Director of the Broad Ripple Village Association. “The Eight Eleven Group's presence back on the strip will increase the foot traffic during the day, which is what many of our local businesses need.”

Nostalgia for Broad Ripple inspired Hasbrook and Weiser to rent their original office location on Broad Ripple Avenue in 2015. They turned it into an executive lounge that they call The Founders Club. When Eight Eleven Group put out feelers that they were interested in developing something significant in Broad Ripple, the opportunity quickly presented itself.

Not only do they occupy their original digs, they just leased the former Louie’s Wine Dive at 701 Broad Ripple Avenue.

To help maintain the eclectic space and Broad Ripple vibe, the company has preserved the main bar in the center of the space for flexible work space. The former restaurant and bar will serve as the local sales office for their health information and life sciences division, Medasource.

“We currently have our team spread out among six different offices at Keystone at the Crossing,” says Carlie Oakley, Chief Brand Officer for Eight Eleven Group and the company’s second employee. “I cannot wait until we are all under one roof, but this Broad Ripple sales office is a great first step to our return.”

An additional component of the Eight Eleven Group culture is an internal Masters program called Eight Eleven University. The program is based upon the core values of the company. It may take four to six years to complete and, at the end of the course, the graduate sits down at The Founders Club with Hasbrook and Weiser for a goal-setting session.

The Eight Eleven Group hosts two large

conferences each year. Engage, held in January, is their annual sales conference.

In August is Evolve, an event for their recruiters. Both are held in Indianapolis.

There is also a merit-based annual trip to Cancun in February for those who qualify.

“We do a ton of training and bring people back from across the country to learn new sales, recruiting and leadership techniques,” Oakley adds. “What keeps our employees is the person sitting next to them. It’s our micro-cultures, which is the intimacy of collaboration to make that extra sales call and makes working here a passion and not a job.”

The Eight Eleven Group team is thrilled to be returning to their roots. And not only that, they are working to identify an even larger real estate project that can get the rest of their workforce to Midtown.

One of the company’s goals is to try to be under one roof by the fall of 2022.

“We have a lot of fond memories of Broad Ripple and are looking forward to creating many more with our workforce,” Hasbrook adds. “If we can move here and help to populate the strip and have the same positive impact that we have in other cities, then our foray back to the strip is worth it. To be clear, it is not less expensive to rent office space here.

We are doing this for our love of this community.”

Camp participants can expect all sorts of fun activities, as well as a live DJ.

Growing up, Harvey Harrington has very fond memories of a Vacation Bible School that his aunt put on.

“Every time we have a camp, we have a dance area with a DJ set up,” Harrington says. “When kids are sitting out from doing drills and stuff, we don’t want them just sitting there. Every year, I think hard about how I can make this different and how I can make it the favorite camp of any kid out there, even if they don’t play basketball.”

“I think it was the best Vacation Bible School, bar none. We loved it,” Harrington says. “Even talking to my friends today, they’re like, ‘Remember the time we had Vacation Bible School?’”

With this longstanding memory still fresh in his mind, Harrington aims to create an equally noteworthy experience for Central Indiana youths with his DreamChasers Basketball Camp.

“That’s fueled my camps,” Harrington says. “I was like, ‘How can I put something together where kids can be themselves?’”

Set to take place from July 20-23 at Mt. Vernon Middle School, Harrington’s DreamChasers Basketball Camp is open to kids from first through eighth grades, no matter their previous basketball experience.

The brother of much-loved Indiana Pacers player Al Harrington, Harvey focuses on fundamentals like shooting, defense and ball handling with his camp, while hopefully teaching some lasting life lessons as well.

Like the Vacation Bible School from his childhood, Harrington strives to make his DreamChasers Basketball Camp stand out.

Harrington’s DreamChasers Basketball Camp also receives an occasional visitor from time to time, whether it’s Indiana Pacers mascot Boomer or a former NBA basketball player.

“I get guys to just pop in,” Harrington says.

“Rodney Carney came in and sat in. Al [his brother] came in and spoke. Bonzi Wells has dropped by. These are friends. They care about what I’m doing, and they just pop in.”

With this year in particular, Harrington also plans to implement new health-related policies due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Specifically, he says that the camp will not happen unless he feels absolutely comfortable that no one else’s health will be at risk.

“I feel the same way about everybody else’s kids as I do my own,” Harrington says. “If I’m not going to put my kids in a situation, then I’m not going to put yours in a situation.”

“The response I’ve gotten back from this camp has been unbelievable,” he says.

“I’ve had people write me personal letters saying, ‘Harvey Harrington. My son felt like he didn’t have a friend in the world, but now you’re his friend.’”

Let’s face it. These days, emotions are running high. And understandably so. In a society where we are used to Googling how to do life—e.g., “How to build a bird cage” or “How to get in shape,” we are suddenly at a loss since we can’t exactly type into a search engine, “How to navigate a COVID-19 existence.”

Because we have entered unchartered territories, we may alternate between moments of feeling fine and moments of total terror.

Just so you know, if you awake in the wee hours of the morning thinking, “I don’t know what to do,” “I don’t know what to think,” or “I don’t know how to live,” you are totally normal. And that’s because our world suddenly feels inside out and backward. When we run into someone we know out in public, we can no longer greet them with a handshake or a hug. That feels odd. And when someone has passed away, we aren’t allowed to attend the funeral to console the mourning. That’s also sad and unsettling.

When the coronavirus spiraled into our world like an F5 tornado, it wreaked havoc on life as we knew it. I don’t think that any of us conceived of the day when schools would shut down, followed by churches, restaurants, gyms, doctor’s offices, beaches, parks, movie theaters, retail stores, barbers, hair salons, amusement parks. We didn’t anticipate concerts, sporting events, parties and even the Magic Maker itself, Disney World, halting indefinitely. On top of that, in the blink of an eye, we suddenly went from shopping with abandon to feeling uneasy partaking in completely mundane tasks like pumping gas and cruising the aisles of a grocery store.

As we tiptoe back into safely resuming normal life, let’s give each other grace, kindness and the benefit of the doubt. The “we’re all in this together” mantra is meant to remind us that although we may be feeling lonely, disconnected, scared, frustrated or confused, we are not the only ones harboring such feelings.

Below are five tips for picking yourself up when you’re feeling down:

watching the squirrels scamper brings true healing power. In today’s world where we are inundated with disheartening news stories, overwhelming statistics and heated opinions on social media, it’s smart to put down the phone and lace up your shoes.

Stepping outside has never been more important.

2. Connect with a pet or a vet or a jet. Not to get all Dr. Seuss

on you, but the point is to try and get your mind off your own worries by focusing on something or someone else. That might mean playing with your dog or cat. It may involve dropping supplies at a VA center. Or it may be looking skyward to enjoy a flyover to boost societal morale. The idea is to get outside your own head, especially if you tend to perseverate on negative or anxious feelings.

3.Listen to the music your parents used to play around the house when you were a kid. Trust me, it’s the closest thing

you’ll get to a time machine, and transporting yourself back to a happier, simpler headspace is just what the doctor ordered.

4.Declutter a room. I know it doesn’t sound like fun, and it’s not necessarily fun while you’re in the midst of doing it, but wow — the joy you feel when a space is free of excess is truly exhilarating. Even my 9-year-old, whose room was an unmitigated disaster, admitted that when it was picked up and organized, he felt less oppressed. He even claimed he slept better in a clean room!

5.Make a gratitude journal. In times like these, it’s easy to focus on the losses, the negativity and the things we are missing out on. But a change in focus can quickly shift a gloomy mood.

Doing this activity with your spouse or children is a great way to not only bond as a family but acknowledge the many blessings that surround us daily.
