A Racing Legend A Look Back at IndyCar Great Rodger Ward

The month of May brings one of the most exciting traditions that Indiana looks forward to — the Indianapolis 500.

Then Indy 500, an event which has long served as an Indianapolis cultural icon and the highest level of IndyCar racing, is preparing for its 103rd running and boasts a rich history of contributions to professional racing.

Through the years, many notable drivers have participated in the race, but one of the most successful and closely tied to Indianapolis is two-time Indy 500 winner Rodger Ward. Ward currently holds the record for most consecutive Top 4 finishes in Indy 500 history and enjoyed great success both in Indianapolis and elsewhere as one of the most dominant racers of the 1950s and 60s.

Rodger Ward’s path to professional racing began from a childhood surrounded by automobiles and engines at his father’s business in southern California. Originally from Beloit, KS, young Ward and his family moved to Los Angeles, where his father ran an auto wrecking and junkyard, and it was here that Ward fell in love with racing.

he eventually managed to assemble his own hot rod at the age of 14, from salvaged parts, laying the foundation for a life in professional racing.

Following the passing of his rookie test, Ward landed his first entry of a storied career with the Indy 500, racing in the 1951 running.

As Ward got older, his interests in driving only grew, until his racing endeavors were interrupted by the start of World War II. Ward was recruited to join the Army Air Corps once war broke out and discovered he was a gifted pilot, excelling at flying a number of different military planes. His aerial skills were so exceptional that he was held out of active duty and kept to train other pilots for the Air Corps, with the Army believing Ward’s abilities to be the standard they wanted all potential pilots to aspire to. While he didn’t pursue aviation as a career after his time in the military, his experiences in the Air Corps paved the way for a lifetime hobby of piloting planes, as he continued to fly for years to come.

While Ward would continue to race and experience tremendous success across the country, throughout the 1950s, success at the Indianapolis 500 would remain elusive for years to come. A series of mechanical

issues led to early exits from the race each year from 1951-1954, and then, in the 1955 running, Ward was involved in a crash that led to the death of his close friend and fellow racer, Bill Vukovich. This event almost ended Ward’s career, as he seriously considered retiring entirely in the aftermath of the disaster at the 1955 Indy 500, until Vukovich’s widowed wife convinced Rodger to stick with racing, as

Following the conclusion of World War II, Ward continued to serve in the Military and found himself stationed at an Army base in Wichita Falls, TX. It was here on a small dirt track where Ward got his first taste of professional racing when he was working part-time as a mechanic in Wichita Falls.

“Dad was working as a mechanic for a guy named Abe Rabin, who owned a used car dealership and a racecar,” says Rick Ward, Rodger's son, when asked about his father’s first race in Wichita Falls in 1946. “One day, the racecar driver didn’t show up, so they let dad take a crack at it. He did ok, but he got in a wreck, and he went down on the windshield and put a really nasty scar on his chin that he kept till the end of his days.”

Following his discharge from the Army and through the rest of the 1940s, Rodger continued to race and improve his craft, eventually gaining several well-publicized victories that, in turn, built his reputation as a skilled driver. In 1948, Ward commandeered a midget car to a firstplace finish at the San Diego Grand Prix and drove a stock car to a top finish at the 1951 AAA Stock Car Championship, all of which helped him get a shot with IndyCar.

she insisted Bill’s death wasn’t Rodger’s fault.

Rodger managed to revive his racing career, and in 1956 returned to compete in the Indianapolis 500, where he completed the race for the first time and ended the day with an eighth-place finish. This first completion helped springboard Rodger into greater racing success, and in 1959 he connected with car owner Bob Wilke and mechanic A.J. Watson to form the fearsome Leader Car Racing team, more commonly known as “The Flying W’s.”

It was with The Flying W’s that Ward went on his historic run of victories at the Indy 500, finishing in the top four at six consecutive Indy 500 races from 19591964, including two first-place finishes in ‘59 and ‘62. It was also during this stretch that two of the most memorable racing duels in Indianapolis 500 history occurred, with Ward going toe-to-toe with Jim Rathmann in 1960, and A.J. Foyt in 1964, both races featuring back and forth lead changes throughout the race.

Rodger lived close to the Indianapolis Speedway for part of his life, and his son, Rick, still lives in Indianapolis to this day.

While Rodger Ward’s professional racing career officially ended with his retirement in 1966, his legacy has lived on through the years. Ward’s long, successful career in racing ended with multiple victories in Indianapolis, Trenton, Milwaukee and countless other cities, an induction into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame and the reputation as one of the winningest drivers in Indianapolis 500 history. Outside of his own racing, Ward owned a racetrack in Michigan, worked as a TV broadcaster for NASCAR and the IndyCar Series and continued to fly planes recreationally throughout his life, including one memorable incident where he seamlessly landed a plane with a failed engine onto Interstate 74 north of Brownsburg.

Rodger is remembered as a man who loved and cared for each of his many fans and as a man who always held Indianapolis close to his heart up until his death in 2004.

He once said, “Winning that race (the Indianapolis 500) was the greatest thing that happened to me in my life.”

“We are really excited to now have a unified, clean, modern and fun brand to start the new year,” Fanning says. “Because of our anniversary, it is completely appropriate that we chose this year of all years to rebrand the most recognizable neighborhood in the state of Indiana.”

The BRVA has been using the same logo since 1999. One company in Indianapolis created all the logos for the city’s cultural districts. As Indy’s first cultural district, Broad Ripple fought to be included.

“At that time, relative to the other districts, our identity was centered around nightlife,” says Colleen Fanning, Executive Director of the Broad Ripple Village Association (BRVA). “Since then, a lot of things have changed. We are really excited to reestablish our focus on being recreational, family friendly, diverse, artsy and outdoorsy, because of our proximity to the canal and river.”

In 1836, Jacob Coil established the town of Broad Ripple along the banks of the White River. Construction on the Canal began the following year. Broad Ripple was annexed into Indianapolis in 1922.

Since 1969, the Broad Ripple Village Association has supported the residents and businesses of the neighborhood. The BRVA is powered by hundreds of volunteers who make Broad Ripple a clean, safe and vibrant community for all to enjoy.

This year the BRVA celebrates its 50th anniversary, and it’s the perfect time for a fresh look — a rebranding.

“We were really excited when the Create Indy grant came along because it afforded us the opportunity to rebrand in a more futurefacing direction, in the way that Broad Ripple wants to grow,” Fanning says.

They asked several companies for bids and chose Tomato Fish Marketing to focus on the project. A task force of individuals from the BRVA and other stakeholders from the community worked with Tomato Fish to create a brand that speaks to the future of Broad Ripple but also gives a nod to the past.

The new look was recently unveiled at the spring public meeting at the Indianapolis Art Center on April 16.

“I would describe it as clean and modern with a nod to Broad Ripple’s past including some references to the uniqueness of our geographical location,” Fanning says.

The biggest part of the rebrand is the new logo for the whole cultural district, but the BRVA also got a refresh and community events now have a new look too. Now, everyone will understand instantly which events are official Broad Ripple events versus other events that the BRVA is helping to promote in the village.

Nicole-Taylor’s Pasta and Market is now in its 10th year of offering something truly unique to Broad Ripple Village.

You won’t find anything quite like it in the city — it’s part retail market, part wholesaler, part walk-in daytime eatery and part private chef ’s dinner destination. Owners Rosa and Tony Hanslits say it’s just such diversity that has made their establishment a local hit.

Back in 2007, Rosa and Tony decided to try selling some of their own homemade pastas at a few local farmers markets, naming their product Nicole-Taylor’s after the middle names of their daughters Ashley and Katherine. As a long-time local chef previously with Peter’s Restaurant, 14 West and Woodland Country Club, Tony was looking for a food-related hobby to undertake with Rosa, having recently closed the doors to their Broad Ripple-based Italian eatery Tavola di Tosa.

They soon began selling out every week, nearly overtaxing the small pasta maker they used to crank out their products. Two seasons later the couple realized the demand was simply too great to continue without their own production facility and retail store, and soon found a spot on East 54th Street from which to operate.

“Broad Ripple is our neighborhood, and we live a few minutes from the store,” says Rosa, a native of Reggio Calabria, Italy, who grew up in South Bend and went to the same grade school as Tony. “We realized it was a fun, up-and-coming area to be in.”

Rosa and Tony began offering additional retail products including sauces,

breads and condiments with their pastas upon opening and eventually expanded to include a daytime dining space where they offer soups, sandwiches, salads and pasta dishes from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

“About 85 percent of what we sell we make in-house, and most of the rest we try to import from Italy or other places in Europe to bring that element to it,” Rosa says. “And then we have some local products on the shelves too, which is very important to us.”

By day, the large butcher block table in the kitchen is used for production purposes, and on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday evenings it serves as a chef ’s table at which parties from eight to 10

people are treated to a private four-course dinner cooked by Tony.

“We’ve done the dinners for nine years and we’ve sold out every year — this year we sold out for 2019 in about an hour and a half,” Rosa says. “Tony talks to each client for each dinner that we do, and then makes up the four-course menu based on their likes, dislikes and any food restrictions. He likes to do seasonal things, and every single menu is different.”

These days you’ll find 20 to 25 pastas of various shapes and flavors available at Nicole-Taylor’s daily, and the front retail space also displays meats, cheeses, sauces, oils, sodas, breads, cookies and more.

In true mom-and-pop form, Nicole-Taylor’s even offers special lasagna orders around Christmas time for which customers can bring in their own casserole dishes to be filled with Rosa and Tony’s own creations par-cooked.

The Hanslits’ staff of 10 includes three pasta makers and a wholesale sales account executive, and Nicole-Taylor’s current wholesale clients include Harry and Izzy’s, Spoke and Steele, Peterson’s, Mesh, Cobblestone in Zionsville and more.

“We try to bring a personal touch to what we do,” Rosa adds. “We know people’s names and we know about their families, and they know ours. We’ve been in Broad Ripple for 35 years now and it

feels like home, and so much of our clientele lives here.”

When asked what her favorite pasta is among the dozens and dozens of selections her establishment makes every day, Rosa says she likes to keep it basic.

“I love linguini with a simple marinara and basil sauce — that’s it,” she says. “It’s not too thin but not too thick, so you get a nice bite that doesn’t get lost in the shuffle of the sauce.”

In September 2017, Creekside opened its doors at the intersection of 46th and Binford.

Shane Nevers is the Senior Administrator at Creekside Health & Rehabilitation Center. TLC Management, the parent company of Creekside, has been home for him for the last 12 years. Nevers was at the top of the list when TLC began considering leadership for the new facility.

With 120 beds, Creekside provides long-term nursing care and post-acute rehabilitation services — both in-patient and outpatient. One feature that sets Creekside apart is every room is private.

Planning for a new building started in 2014.

“We studied the area and realized there was a need in this neighborhood for our services,” says Nevers, who frequently comes to work with his dog, Boston. “Creekside offers private rooms and amenities that aren’t being offered anywhere else nearby. The location is prime because it’s close to Broad Ripple, Meridian Hills and Fort Harrison. Being right on Binford Boulevard offers great visibility.”

“Going to rehab after a patient has been in the hospital should be a time for the patient to rest, heal and get strong enough to go home,” Nevers explains. “We offer only private rooms to ensure the best rest possible while a patient is staying with us.”

The therapy team at Creekside is a dedicated group of physical, occupational and speech therapists who begin and end each day at the facility.

“Our therapists work only at Creekside so we can provide continuity of care for the patients,” Nevers says. “Building trust with the therapist is a key component for each patient as they strive to build confidence in their own physical abilities.”

It seems Creekside has thought of everything when it comes to the latest tools to help patients achieve therapy goals. Creekside boasts sophisticated and exclusive equipment.

“Jinitronix” is an interactive biofeedback program for strength, balance and safety awareness. “Aspire” is an electrical stimulation used by speech therapists to help improve swallowing. “Biodex” is used for high-level dynamic balance. “Juvent” is a micro-impact platform used for various therapies.

Connected to the therapy gym, the outdoor courtyard is strategically set up as a therapy tool — various terrain, ramps and steps are there for patients to use alongside their therapist.
