8 Reasons Christmas Is the Most Wonderful Time of the Year Writer / Abigail Hake Photography Provided
1. The Lights There’s something about driving around Growing up, there were certain things you on streets lined with lighted trees that looked forward to right after Thanksgiving. transports most to a happy and carefree The radio started playing Christmas songs, place! There’s something about the lights quickly went up around town, and twinkling lights backed by the darkness the hustle and bustle of life started to run that makes you feel like you are in a at a quicker pace because everyone knew magical wonderland. And if there’s snow, the season was here and the holiday was the lights take on an even more magical coming, and fast! But while we all love the effect. So, please light up all the things! holiday season, there are a few things that All lamps, fences, homes, anything and really help make Christmastime the most everything! And don’t feel rushed to take wonderful. them down either.
2. Giving Back The holidays are the perfect time to give. People tend to channel their inner Saint Nick and give more generously around this time of the year. Sock donations are always welcomed and a great way to give to local shelters. There are plenty of kids who might not have a very magical holiday without donations, so look for local children’s centers and groups where you can adopt a child for the holidays by fulfilling their wish list anonymously. Giving doesn’t have to be done in monstrous ways, you can just grab an item off the donation tree at work, buy a preloaded bag of groceries at the store or even buy the coffee for the person behind you in line at your favorite coffee shop! Often times, it’s the littlest things that make the biggest difference. Not only do you feel good doing it, you know you are making someone else’s day too. 3. Friends & Family One of the best parts of the holidays, for most, is seeing our friends and family at times when we aren’t rushed to get from here to there. Taking time out during the holidays to unplug and reconnect makes for the most enjoyable gatherings! While this can be a stressful time of the year, it doesn’t have to be. Put that phone down and enjoy the time you have with your loved ones, unless you are snapping photos of course! Anytime a large (or
4 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2019 / atBRip.com
small) group gets together, it’s a good time. It’s always fun to see that cousin who’s in from California or your great grandmother surrounded by all her grand and great-grandchildren. Holiday gettogethers tend to make for some of the best memories! 4. Christmas Parties Speaking of get-togethers with friends and family, everyone is throwing a party during this time of the year and there’s definitely something for all! It’s amazing the different types of parties you can have these days – gift exchanges, crafting, cookie decorating or end of year work parties are sure to fill out your holiday calendar. And honestly, who doesn’t get a good laugh when the ugly Christmas sweaters come out to play! Just make sure to drink responsibly and have fun. 5. Delicious Food Holiday food is all about comfort and we can all use a little bit of comfort food now and again. It is funny how you might look forward to your grandmother's pecan pie or your mom’s green bean casserole, but there’s also something about the sweets that come along with the holidays that really call you to the table. Pumpkin Pies, Christmas Cakes and all the cookies you can imagine tend to fill dessert tables to the edges and also make you wish you wore your best yoga pants to dinner. 6. Pretty Presents Gift wrapping has become an art form. Beautifully wrapped packages are extra enticing sitting under the tree. Sometimes the best are brown paper packages tied up with string, but other times the winners are ones with sprigs of fresh greenery and beautiful handmade bows. While you can outsource gift wrapping to the kids running fundraisers at the mall or
5 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2019 / atBRip.com
the shop you purchased at, it is fun to get creative with your wrapping. You can also create your own wrapping paper from drawings and pictures which is great if you want to go for a more personalized look. Either way, if you do it yourself or ask someone for help, pretty packages are something to look forward to each holiday season! 7. Holiday Movies Some of the most loved movies out there are those that revolve around a holiday. Who goes through Thanksgiving without watching "A Christmas Story” or the entire month of December without watching “Elf ”? And let’s be honest “Home Alone” is a kid’s favorite year-round. Holiday movies can really get you in the spirit! You might be missing out if you haven’t watched “The Family Stone,” “It’s a Wonderful Life,” or “While You Were Sleeping." Make a list this year and see how many you can check off! 8. Family Traditions Traditions are an awesome way to make memories year after year. It could be volunteering together with friends and family, making ornaments with your kids or decorating gingerbread houses with friends. Whatever you decide to do, make it a tradition. You may already have some like wearing matching pajamas or going ice skating outdoors but there’s definitely nothing wrong with making sure you do something every year around the same time! It takes that normal everyday outing and turns it into something special everyone looks forward to. So there you have it. Some of the best reasons that Christmas the most wonderful time of the year. And while it can be the most magical and fun-filled time of the year for most, please know that it can be extra hard for others. So, this holiday season, make it a goal to remember everyone has a story you might not see, to spread love and kindness and remember the reason for the season. 6 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2019 / atBRip.com

Sun King Co-Owner Dave Colt, Offshore/Pier 48 Owner Freddie Knipscheer & Sun King Co-Owner Clay Robinson
Sun King Launches New Broad Ripple Tap Room & Eatery Writer / Jon Shoulders Photographer / Michael Durr
Midtown residents who’ve been curious about what would happen at the commercial space on Broad Ripple Avenue near Guilford formerly occupied by Thr3e Wise Men Brewing Co. didn’t have to wonder for long. Sun King Brewing officially took over the space on August 1 and wasted no time building out its fourth Indy location, which consists of a family-friendly tasting room with 24 beer taps and non-alcoholic drinks, as well as Offshore by Pier 48, a restaurant concept that co-owner Clay Robinson says is a unique culinary addition to the Village. “We wanted this to be different than anything that’s available in Broad Ripple,” he says. “We didn’t want to be another burger or pizza joint. The food complements our beer and cocktail menu, and some things on the menu like the dough are actually made using our Sun King products.” Sun King purchased the former Thr3e Wise Men brewing implements, kitchen equipment and furnishings at an auction on August 1 and underwent an eight-week renovation and building preparation process at the 1021 Broad Ripple Avenue location, which Robinson says mostly consisted of cleaning, painting and some light cosmetic changes. Sun King Broad Ripple officially opened to the public in mid-October. “I originally thought we wouldn’t have the capacity for this space, but my business partner and co-owner Dave (Colt) took a deeper look into it and saw the potential,” Robinson says. “Dave did some calculations on costs and figured that with the great parking space this could really work for us.” The tap room serves up handcrafted cocktails, spirits from the company’s Carmel distillery and 24 beer selections that include a few Sun King staples like the Sunlight Cream Ale, Wee Mac Scottish-Style Ale and Osiris Pale
Ale, as well as seasonal and small-batch offerings. Offshore Owner Fred Knipscheer says his company had been looking to partner with Sun King throughout 2019 and when word of the brewery’s decision to move forward with the new midtown location reached his offices, he and his team worked quickly to put together a menu proposal for Robinson and Colt. “It was a fast process. We made up a menu in about five days and did a food tasting for the Sun King people, and then got the nod a few weeks later,” says Knipscheer, who also owns Pier 48 Fish House & Oyster Bar on Pennsylvania Street. “We wanted to do something that was costeffective and a little conceptually different. For example, we have house-made chips and coleslaw and no French fries and really good flatbread instead of pizza.” Knipscheer describes the menu as farmto-table with some sea-to-table options in the mix as well, including soups, salads, sandwiches, desserts and several “Shareables” like sliders, stuffed calamari and a cheese and charcuterie board. “There's been a little bit of a misconception that we’re bringing a seafood restaurant to Sun King, but that’s not really what it is,” he explains. “About 20 to 25% of the menu is seafood, with our lobster roll and fish sandwich from Pier 48, and our clam chowder and a tuna dish. It’s all made from scratch daily.” Robinson says Sun King’s products have had a long-time presence at Broad Ripple stores and eateries, and establishing a standalone physical location in the heart of the Village was a logical next step for the company. “With Broad Ripple being a cultural center of our city with a great neighborhood population, we’re excited to have a location here,” Robinson says. “As we’ve grown from downtown into Carmel and Fishers now, it made sense to tie in Broad Ripple. We feel like the area is in a great resurgence right now with new businesses,
new housing and the Red Line.” Sun King is not currently brewing products at the Broad Ripple facility but hopes to begin doing so later this winter, with an eye toward selling products brewed at the location by springtime. “Brewing licensing is a months-long process, so we’re going through all the federal paperwork right now to be able to produce alcohol at this spot,” Robinson says. Sun King plans to host special events and tapping parties once brewing is operational at the new location and eventually offer space near the back of the facility for private and corporate functions. “After getting it open in eight weeks, we’ve moved into the tweaking and adjusting phase to make the place even better based on feedback from customers and friends,” Robinson adds. “It’s a great spot that I think
will only get better because we want each of our locations to always get better and stand on their own as unique.” Robinson and Colt founded Sun King Brewing back in 2009 after the two garnered experience at several local breweries and restaurants including Circle V Brewing, Rock Bottom and The RAM Restaurant & Brewery. The company is now the secondlargest beer brewery in the state, with canned and on-tap products at more than 1,000 locations throughout Indiana. In addition to its downtown Indy brewing
headquarters, Sun King also operates an all-ages tap room and 6,000-square-foot, small-batch brewery in Fishers, as well as an all-ages distillery location in Carmel that offers beer, spirits and food from several local food vendors. Sun King Broad Ripple Tap Room and Offshore by Pier 48 is located at 1021 Broad Ripple Avenue in Indianapolis. For additional info including a full food and beer menu, visit sunkingbrewing.com or call 317-602-5893. Hours of operation are Sunday through Wednesday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Thursday through Saturday 11 a.m. to midnight

and pay attention to what they need,” she says. “It’s a lot of observing, getting on their level and taking the time to understand them as an individual and as a group.” Watson appreciates how dedicated the Village Montessori teachers are to practicing patience. “They’re willing to teach and reteach processes like preparing a snack or arranging a model of a plant,” says Watson, whose 2-year-old son is thrilled with his new self-sufficiency and independence. “I move to put cereal in his bowl and he stops me: ‘I do it!’ He brings his dishes to the sink and says, ‘I did it!’” Watson says. “Learning the small processes of school has made him attuned to the processes at home and he readily puts away socks in one drawer and picks out underwear from another without any prompting from me.” Director Anne Schollenberger & Lead Teacher Maria Leeman
It’s the Montessori way of providing dignity through mindful preparation for the child’s needs.
Village Montessori School Nurtures Independence In Preschoolers By Encouraging Curiosity Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photographer / Michael Durr
When the Village Montessori School opened in 2010, founders chose the name because the word “village” evokes the warm feeling of community and shared support. “It’s a pretty pivotal time as a parent when your child is in preschool and you’re in the trenches with everybody,” says Anne Schollenberger, the preschool’s director. Emily Watson knows this firsthand. “I had a second child, in part, because I felt so at home with Village Montessori [while my older son was enrolled there],” Watson says. “I knew that I could cope
with more children if I had their support.” The school nurtures independence in each child by encouraging children’s natural curiosity. “Three-year-olds want to do everything themselves — push the button, zip the coat, tie the shoes — so we slow everything down so they can practice those skills,” says Maria Leeman, the school’s lead teacher. Doing everything in the child’s time takes a lot of preparation, work and thought. “You have to put your own biases aside 12 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2019 / atBRip.com
“We don’t disvalue children because they’re young,” Leeman says. “We give them the time to learn at their pace and if that means taking 10 minutes to put on a shoe, that’s what we give them.” These days, in particular, society is a slave to clocks, schedules and technology, all of which cause us to move at record speed. At Village Montessori School, however, they stop and smell the roses — literally. Being outside is vital to the curriculum for multiple reasons. Children naturally come to a sense of peace when they’re in nature. The 24-member class makes a circle outside every day, inhaling the fresh air, relishing the sun on their cheeks, listening to chirping, squeaking, clucking animals around them and touching the bugs and the dirt. They also talk about their responsibility for taking care of the Earth. “When we’re standing on the ground
outside and talking about how to recycle, it makes it more real,” Leeman adds. The school also has chickens that the students feed and water daily. It’s just another way for them to understand about caring for living things. “It’s a key concept to drive home during a developmental phase when it’s typically all about me, me, me,” Schollenberger says. “To learn to have that empathy prepares them to be good people.” Watson agrees. “All our teachers provide the support and modeling our children need to become self-directed, self-disciplined, selfpossessed learners who care about and for their little school community,” she says. The students also enjoy recess on the playscape. “Rather than a jungle gym, which serves only one purpose, the playscape has things they play with that can evolve into multiple facets of learning,” Leeman says. For instance, a sandbox allows kids to dig trenches, build castles and make “cakes.” They also have an agility course, a climbing tube and a tire they can climb over or hide under. Plus, they’ll soon be adding a mud kitchen, complete with dirt, sand and leaves. Providing all of these
13 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2019 / atBRip.com
options gives students a chance to work their small and large motor skills. “It’s not so much about having it all as much as it is giving them what they need when the need arises,” Schollenberger says. For instance, when the kids are fighting and need to let off steam, teachers bring out the bubbles, which calms everyone down.
It’s the most wonderful time of the year. Make it even sweeter with our festive holiday sweets.
Holly Jolly Village
And while the students are allowed to make messes, they also clean up themselves. “We don’t just swoop in and do it for them,” Leeman says. “That’s part of the independence and dignity.” Speaking of independence, curriculum is guided by student choice.
Logos
“People who are forced to do things learn nothing but anger,” Leeman says. In the absence of mandate, however, the neurons start firing.

“I eavesdrop on four-year-olds negotiating the most equitable way to divide banana slices,” Watson says. “They use specialized learning tools and demonstrate how quantities are squared and cubed. I can only imagine how much better a math student I would have been if I had learned sophisticated concepts through play as a child rather than struggling with abstract ideas as a teenager.” Leeman loves teaching preschoolers because it’s setting the stage for who they will become. “How we want the world to be really starts with these 3 to 6-year-olds,” Leeman says. “This is where they are taught to be good people.” Village Montessori is located at 6535 Ferguson Street in Indianapolis. Popular Newfields Winterlights Event Returns Through January 5 Writer / Samantha Kupiainen Photography provided by Newfields
15 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2019 / atBRip.com
or the third year in a row, Newfields Winterlights will enchant Hoosiers from across the state. What started in 2017 as an effort to embrace both the art and nature of its campus has now morphed into a family tradition for Central Indiana residents.
Although most crowd favorites have returned for this family tradition, there are still new features and surprises to make your visit merry and bright.
Winterlights is a Winter Wonderland of 1.5 million lights strung throughout the Newfields Campus. Lights are woven throughout the Snowflake Bridge, Frosted Forest and other illuminated displays throughout the campus. Lights dance to music on the Lilly House lawn and special glasses transform the lights into shimmering snowflakes.
“In 2017, Newfields did a significant rebrand to name the entire campus,” says Emily Sogard, communications coordinator at Newfields. “So, we are no longer the Indianapolis Museum of Art. However, we have an entire campus worth of venues. We have the art museum, we have the garden, we have the Lilly House, the Fairbanks Art and Nature Park, and we also have Miller House.”
Rebranding
16 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2019 / atBRip.com
Sogard says that some residents and visitors didn’t know that Newfields had all of those features. So, when it rebranded in 2017, it had a mission to embrace its entire campus. “We rebranded to an encompassing campus name called Newfields,” she says. “When we did that, we really wanted to embrace both the art and the nature that we have on our campus and one of the ways to do that was Winterlights. This is our third year and it’s going great. It’s really become a favorite holiday tradition in Indianapolis.” In addition to its lights, Newfields sells hot apple cider, hot chocolate, and s’mores over a fire pit. Sun King Brewing also offers an exclusive beer during Winterlights that you can only get at Newfields — Electric Reindeer. It’s a brown ale with ginger and molasses. For its grand finale, Newfields ends its light display with a whirling blizzard of light. “People really loved it — a whirling blizzard of light,” Sogard says. “We’re excited to be able to offer people’s favorite things again.” In addition to Winterlights, Newfields hopes to have four major seasonal events in and around the museum and campus. Sogard says its goal is to “speak to a population that may not have come to the museum in the past.” For guests hoping to have a smooth experience at Newfields, Sogard suggests buying your tickets in advance. Newfields Winterlights often sells out. Additionally, she suggests going earlier in the evening. “Our last ticket slot is available at 8 p.m.,” Sogard says. “We’re open until 9 p.m., so that would give people about an hour to go through. However, the fact that you’re going to watch longer than that, I’d say get your tickets earlier. Winter and getting chilly, it’s about as long as people will stay. “My biggest advice would be to buy your tickets online ahead of time because we do sell out and the worst thing is getting everybody all together in the car and showing up, only to find out that you’ll have to come back another night.,” she adds. 17 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2019 / atBRip.com
Sogard also suggests that guests try everything they can — try all the food there is and all of the light necklaces. “Winterlights is kind of a choose your own adventure,” she says. “You can make it your own.”
Winterlights is presented by Bank of America and is hosted at Newfields, which is located at 4000 N Michigan Rd in Indianapolis. Winterlights runs now through Jan. 5. Tickets are available at discovernewfields.org, and it’s highly encouraged to purchase your tickets in advance.
