SHOOTING FOR THE MOON MOONTOWN BREWING COMPANY CELEBRATING SIX YEARS WITH REVAMPED MENU AND EXCITING UPCOMING EVENTS Writer / Renee Larr Photographer / Michaela Hoover

In light of the recent economic downturn, Moontown faced rising goods costs. Mattingly says Moontown has established itself as a craft brewery, restaurant and event venue nestled with the walls of a historic school building. To commemorate their sixth anniversary, the team will throw a weekend-long anniversary bash beginning May 17. The festivities kick off Friday night with a performance by Hyryder, a prominent Midwest Grateful Dead tribute band. “We love celebrating our anniversary because it’s such an accomplishment,” Mattingly says. “Hyryder draws huge crowds, which is always a good time. We’ll have some beer releases, lots of specials and fun activities that weekend.” With the arrival of May and June, Moontown will embark on the unofficial start of private events and patio season. Mattingly says the local Zionsville and Whitestown cycling groups have made the dog-friendly patio their go-to spot during the spring and summer.

Moontown holds an intriguing history within its walls. Mattingly says 90% of the building is situated in the former Whitestown High School gymnasium, which was built 122 years ago. The restoration project began in 2017, and by 2018 Moontown had opened. Mattingly, a Zionsville native, says he is deeply appreciative to be a part of the area’s rich historical legacy. “When I was growing up, there wasn’t much to the Whitestown area,” Mattingly says. “I never really imagined owning a business 15 minutes from where I grew up. Moontown is a centerpiece of the soon-to-be revitalized downtown area. We’re excited to be a part of the legacy core in Whitestown.” Moontown Brewing Company is located at 345 South Bowers Street in Whitestown. TAKE A SWING AT IT D-BAT ZIONSVILLE OWNERS SEEK TO ELEVATE THEIR CUSTOMERS’ SKILLS - AND CHARACTER Writer / Julie Yates Photographer / Krystal Dailey

Open to the public, it offers private and group lessons, coach training, team meeting and practice space, camps and clinics during school vacation days, and birthday parties. The name D-BAT is an acronym for developing beliefs, attitudes and traditions. Celebrating its first anniversary, the team at the Zionsville franchise is co-owned by Samantha Joseph and her husband. The ethics of the business resonated with the couple. D-BAT Zionsville is a premier baseball and softball training facility that does more than develop sport-specific skills. Its mission is to elevate character, as well as improve the performance of athletes participating in Tee Ball up to the collegiate level. 10 | March 2024 | TownePost.com

“We were enamored with it,” Joseph says. “We were looking for something that would make a difference in the community. Our main goal is to provide a quality teaching environment at any level, but to have fun while improving. It’s a culture we built our first year, and a foundation we plan to keep.”

The indoor facility is climate controlled and comfortable, especially for parents. Besides a waiting lounge, there are benches to watch the action. Batting cages for individuals or teams are available for half-hour rentals and include balls. Pitching machines launch balls at controlled speeds for slow pitches, fast throws and curve balls. The building is spacious enough to provide rooms for team meetings, coaches clinics and birthday parties. “Our instructors are highly qualified,” Joseph says. “Each has played in either collegiate, minor or major leagues. One played for the Chicago White Sox. Another was a pitcher for the Cincinnati Reds. Birthday parties last 90 minutes and are full of activities such as instruction from staff, wiffle ball and kick ball. Coaching clinics take place at the beginning of travel and rec-ball season. Information on how to be effective while running practices is shared. Topics include different drills, assessment

and how to motivate players.” D-BAT is open to the public, but families who use the facility have discovered that membership is a great value and includes perks such as free use of pitching machines. Platinum and gold members receive corresponding discount levels at the pro shop and for lessons, camps and clinics. The pro shop is fully stocked with items from Rawlings and Easton, and carries D-BAT wooden training bats. Custom uniforms, gloves and helmets can be ordered. D-BAT’s website lists upcoming events. A beginning pitching clinic will be held March 6 and March 13. All Aspects Spring Break Camp will be held March 26 through March 29, and again on April 1 through April 5. “We don’t run teams that charge fees to be part of,” Joseph says. “We support local teams. We are a Zionsville Little League spring team sponsor, have donated turf to Pike Township and balls to the Midwest Thunder Baseball. Come in with this article, and in celebration of our oneyear anniversary, 45 free swings on the pitching machine will be given to firsttime customers. We love kids and love the sport. We want everyone, even if they have never picked up a bat, to enjoy what we have built for the community.” D-BAT Zionsville is located at 6200 Technology Center Drive, Suite 150. OLD-WORLD CHARM

THE AGENCY INDY TEAM RENOVATES HISTORIC FARMHOUSE STRUCTURE AT HOLLIDAY FARMS Writer / Renee Larr Photographer / Krystal Dailey

A historic farmhouse, originally built in 1865, has undergone a remarkable transformation thanks to The Agency Indianapolis, a luxury real estate brokerage.

the Town of Zionsville. Garontakos says brick had to be replaced, the chimney and windows had to be rebuilt, a new roof installed, and new soffits and trim added, returning it to its original glory.

Situated in the picturesque Holliday Farms neighborhood in Zionsville, the 2,500-square-foot property is listed on the Indiana Landmarks historic homes registry. Today it serves as the office for Traci Garontakos, managing partner of The Agency Indianapolis, and her dedicated team.

“The exterior was quite the process, but the interior wasn’t without its challenges either,” Garontakos says. “When the home was built, there was no HVAC system, so there were no vents. So that was added later, and because of that we noticed some sagging in the floor. It was a labor of love, but we’ve always loved this house and wanted it to continue to stay a part of the landscape here.”

“When we acquired the property it was in pretty rough shape,” Garontakos says. “There was also a barn on the property, but unfortunately it wasn’t structurally sound so we couldn’t keep it. There was also an addition built on the house in the ’90s. Once we removed the siding, we realized it was rotted to the sill plates.”

Garontakos says The Agency purchased both the lot that the house stands on, and the adjacent lot, to maintain control over any future construction on the site. The site is now zoned for commercial use, but preserving the old-world charm and honoring the home’s era remained paramount.

The damage to the home was significant and required extensive, painstaking care to meet the standards of many organizations, including “Eventually we will be surrounded by 12 cottage-style homes,” Garontakos says. “We felt like if we purchased both lots and did the planned unit development of Holliday Farms, the developer, and 12 | March 2024 | TownePost.com

one project on the two, we could control what everything looked like. The goal is to eventually have the house and three barn-like structures on the property. Those structures will house boutique shops, mom-and-popstyle restaurants, and office space. There will also be a courtyard for people to sit outside.” As a longtime Zionsville resident, Garontakos adores the area’s small-town atmosphere. As a real estate professional, she recognized the need for additional amenities in the area. Throughout the renovation process, inspiration was drawn from the vibrant downtown village district. “We wanted to mimic the feeling of that area,” Garontakos says. “This was such a passion project for me as a community member. Bringing The Agency here was an opportunity to bring a fresh take on how real estate is bought and sold. We want to provide that luxury experience. Zionsville and Indianapolis are experiencing extreme growth, which is amazing to see.” For more information, visit theagencyre.com/agent/ traci-garontakos.

FOUR SIGNS IT’S TIME TO CHANGE FINANCIAL ADVISORS 1) LIMITED TAX KNOWLEDGE • Long-term tax planning is key to pursuing your financial goals into retirement, especially during the distribution phase. Having an advisor who understands tax implications and knows the tools and programs available to minimize tax is key. For more on the tax implications of retirement planning, go to storenfinancial. com/understanding-the-tax-implications-of-retirement-planning. • Ultimately, your advisor should also be your tax accountant. If a financial planner is telling you, “Talk to your CPA about taxes,” that should raise a red flag. Story & Photography Provided by Storen Financial

How do you know when it’s time to review your relationship with your current financial advisor? Some relationships just don’t work out. That unfortunate truth applies to spouses, friends, business associates - and financial advisors. There are many reasons that could prompt you to change advisors. If you’ve started thinking that a new advisor can better meet your needs, the process need not be difficult if you have the right team and resources in your pocket. Here are four reasons that should prompt you to re-evaluate your relationship…

Banking built on heart and grit.

2) NO LONG-TERM STRATEGY • Your advisor should adjust their financial strategy to accommodate major life events on the horizon such as retirement. Some advisors get stuck in “accumulation phase” rather than preparing for the time when your investment savings replace a steady paycheck. • You need someone who can give you personalized advice to match your changing needs. Your goals 10-15 years ago will likely not be the same as those you have today. 3) POOR COMMUNICATION • The quality and quantity of communication with your advisor is a critical aspect of any advisory relationship. Interaction should be regular, timely, and include an annual financial review. Trust and clear expectations are extremely important in any financial relationship.

• An advisor should be able to explain what they are doing in clear terms you understand, listen to your changing needs, provide feedback, and adjust your plan as necessary. • You should hear from your advisor during times of economic uncertainty; a reliable advisor will offer reassurance when the stock market is volatile. • If you only hear from your advisor when they want to execute a buy or sell order on your portfolio, this may be a sign your advisor is only interested in the commissions they may make by trading on your account. 4) CONFUSING FEE STRUCTURE • Your advisor’s fee structure should be transparent and explained upfront. It shouldn’t be difficult for an advisor to explain how he or she is adding value to your accounts. To learn more about investment fee structures, visit storenfinancial.com/investment-fee-structureexplained. Ready for a change? At Storen Financial, our team of experienced professionals work with you to make the advisory transition as smooth as possible. community, it offers an inclusive plan for care, whether it is a short-term rehab stay or involves long-term skilled nursing, assisted living, or memory care. Preparing financially for senior living within a life plan community is best done well before something goes wrong. Determine goals that best meet your current needs, while also considering the possibility of more support and assistance in the future. Consider who needs to be involved in creating your plan and who will assist you with reaching those planned goals. This could be family members or financial planners. “Life does not always go according

to plan, but it is good to have a plan,” says John Koontz, sales director. With the plan in mind, it’s time to do your research. Visit communities, meet with sales team members, eat in the dining room, tour the health and rehab centers, and talk to residents. “The residents of Hoosier Village always welcome talking to prospective new neighbors to share why they love living here,” Kantz says. Planning ahead lets you make your own decisions about your future.
