owner Ryan Maxwell.

Sweet M’s Boutique Too is now open in downtown Plainfield. The boutique is designed to cater specifically to sizes 14-24.

“The week of Black Friday, we realized we needed more space. We ran a special every day, and we were blown away by the response,” Stacy says.

“Our biggest customer request has been to carry more of these sizes, and the response so far has been great,” says owner Stacy Maxwell. Stacy noted Sweet M’s will always carry sizes small to 3X in their flagship store and online. The new boutique is tucked away on Vine Street, the former home of Sweet M’s debut shop. Once they outgrew the location, Maxwell moved to the strip mall on Dan Jones Road in front of Meijer March 25 – just a year after opening their doors. “We continued to grow and began seeing repeat customers, and that’s when we really began to feel good about what we were doing,” says Stacy’s husband and co-

When the Maxwells decided to open a boutique, they had their daughters in mind. The owners have three daughters (ages 20, 17 and 14) and two young sons. “We really believe in dressing with modesty,” Ryan says. “You can dress nice and be modest and be proud.” Stacy echoed his sentiment. “We wanted to provide fashionable, modest, reasonably priced clothing,” Stacy says.

donate 25 percent of their net profits to charitable organizations. They also sell clutches by a brand called byTavi, made by women in Cambodia who are victims or vulnerable to human trafficking. Sweet M’s also believes in having exceptional customer service, and the Maxwells say they truly believe in the SMB Team across their three locations. If you’d like a more personal shopping experience, you can book an after-hours party for your friends. In addition to clothing, you can find accessories, shoes and darling little outfits for young girls in their Little M’s section. They carry sizes 5/6 to 13/14.

The stores are open Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. To learn Stacy says they also believe in giving more about Sweet M’s Boutiques visit back to the community. John teaching Seminary class in Egypt.

LIFE AFTER THE PULPIT FORMER KINGSWAY CHRISTIAN CHURCH PASTOR CONTINUES TO INVEST IN THE AVON COMMUNITY

Writer / Ruth Schenk

He had choices.

Avon was a tiny community in the middle of nowhere when John Caldwell visited for the first time in 1974.

Another church had already offered John a position as senior pastor when a group from the Avon area asked him to consider becoming the first pastor of an infant congregation. John chose Avon, not as a stepping stone to another, bigger church, not as a stopping point on the way to something somewhere else. He chose Avon for the rest of his life.

He drove down Highway 36, then a two-lane road. Cornfields everywhere. A few stores. A junk yard. A Dairy Queen. A supermarket, two gas stations and the Avon schools. But John saw something beautiful there — a place to plant deep roots. He was a 30-year-old preacher then who had been traveling around the country as an evangelist with his wife Jan and their young son, Shan. Jan was pregnant with Jennifer and they saw Avon as the perfect place to settle in.

That’s rare in a world where preachers stay an average of six years in one church. As Avon became part of the fabric of their lives, so the Caldwells became part of life in Avon. In the next 36 years, John and Jan raised

their children and saw Kingsway Christian Church grow from 72 the first Sunday they met in the gymnasium at Avon High School to a megachurch of well over 2,000 each weekend. They went through six building programs to make room for more and expanded outreach as well as a growing Christian school. Yet another facility was purchased to house a community care center offering medical and dental services to those without access to such services. John never stopped learning. His undergraduate degree is from Ozark Christian College in Joplin, Missouri. However, he also earned an M.Div. from Cincinnati Bible Seminary and a D.Min degree from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, though he rarely uses the Dr. before his name.

In addition to preaching, teaching, counseling and visiting hospitals and nursing homes, John has written five books and numerous articles. He served the fellowship of churches of which Kingsway is a part in many capacities, including the presidency of both The North American Christian Convention and The International Conference on Missions. He often traveled to the mission field, having preached in 30 countries and having visited more than 100. One of his favorite destinations has been the southern states of India, where he has worked with a ministry that has planted more than 100 churches. In one service he’ll never forget, John baptized 95 people.

John with his grandsons, Jack & Will.

Over the years, other churches tried to entice John to leave Avon. He turned them all down. “This is where I’m supposed to be,” he says. The church grew one family at a time. Few came from other churches. In fact, most had little experience with church. That, John said, was a bonus. They were open to new ideas and leadership. He rarely heard, ”We didn’t do it that way.”

No one knows how many funerals or weddings he officiated or how many doors he knocked on as he visited those who came through church doors. People knew he cared. He was voted one of the top 20 influencers in Avon and honored with only the fourth key to the city. John decided early on to be transparent. What people saw on Sunday was the same preacher they saw at the local coffee shop on Monday or the ball field on Saturday. They knew they could count on him. “People in Avon knew my strengths and weaknesses as well as my interests,” he says. “I’m a huge St.Louis Cardinals fan and an IU fan. There was always lots of teasing that went on with our Purdue and Reds fans.”

“I never tried to be anything different than I was,” he says. “And the people at Kingsway never asked us as a family to be anything other than who we were. As a result, our kids grew up loving the church.” Though John and Jan were at church “all the time,” they never missed a ballgame or event that involved Jennifer or Shan. Over the years, when difficult things happened, they refused to hold a grudge. From time to time, they recharged in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, still their favorite vacation spot. There are always bad days in ministry. September 11, 2001 left many Americans shocked and grief stricken. John opened the church for prayer. “An amazing number of people came to worship and pray at a makeshift altar,” he says. “We had pastors available for those who wanted to talk with someone. That Wednesday night, the building was packed to capacity with standing-room only for an incredible service.” In another service he’ll never forget, a few weeks before retirement, John baptized 86 people.

John performing a baptism in India.

“That was special because many of the people I baptized that day I had prayed for and worked with for years before they decided to give their lives to Christ,” John says.

As he looks back, it’s hard to describe what life in Avon and at Kingsway Christian Church has meant to the Caldwells. However, it is easy to see what they have meant to the community.

The Caldwells’ son Shan is now the associate pastor at Indian Creek Christian Church in Indianapolis and Jennifer Boston and her husband Darren still live and work in Avon. The Caldwells have two grandsons, Jack and Will.

They are recognized everywhere. You’ll still find him at the Big Apple Bagel coffee shop or with Jan at one of the many restaurants in town.

John retired in June, 2010, but he never looked at that as a permanent vacation. In fact, life has been anything but quiet. He founded John Caldwell Ministries, still preaches often, consults for churches on a wide variety of issues, travels to the mission field, is working on a new book, visits those in nursing homes and hospitals and does funerals and weddings. “Being a preacher is a calling,” John says. “It wasn’t just what I did to provide for my family. You never really retire from a calling.” John still reads 70 to 80 books a year. That’s right, more than a book a week. A favorite day is watching his grandsons play baseball or soccer, then getting together with the whole family for dinner at Cracker Barrel.

Meals are interrupted with one conversation after another. The Caldwells don’t mind. In fact, they wouldn’t have it any other way.

“BEING A PREACHER IS A CALLING. IT WASN’T JUST WHAT I DID TO PROVIDE FOR MY FAMILY. YOU NEVER REALLY RETIRE FROM A CALLING.”

WELCOME TO THE KENT STERLING SHOW LOCAL CBS SPORTS RADIO PERSONALITY TALKS PEOPLE, PASSION AND PURPOSE Writer / Jon Shoulders Photographer / Jamie Sangar

For Kent Sterling, it’s not about the sports. Sure, Sterling has hosted the sports-centric Kent Sterling Show on CBS Sports 1430 AM in Indianapolis since 2014, and possesses the same level of enthusiasm for athletics and competition he discovered throughout his youth playing baseball, tennis, basketball, football and golf in his native Lake Bluff, Illinois. His radio show regularly features players, coaches, athletic directors and sports media personalities, with in-depth commentary on all corners of the sports world.

or a Paul George — how those guys came to be those guys and how they respond to adversity. A lot of the lessons you hear about when talking to people in athletics are universal.” A 1986 graduate of Indiana University’s School of Journalism, Sterling feels his popular radio show has been a fitting next step in a career that has included management positions with Emmis Communications in Indianapolis and Hubbard Broadcasting in St. Louis and even a stint performing at The Second City improvisational comedy theater in Chicago in the early 1990s.

“Second City was really good training – you learn to trust yourself and trust your Still, Sterling insists that his passion is process,” Sterling says. “Doing a sports talk ultimately for learning about people and radio show or any kind of talk radio show, it telling their stories. can be a little bit daunting unless you learn to let go of the nerves and wondering what “What I really enjoy talking about is what you’re going to do to fill three hours. If you separates a person who succeeds at a high focus and work hard on the things you love, level from a person who doesn’t,” he says. they tend to mesh and create the career you “I’m interested in the discipline and hard should have. That’s kind of the way I look at work necessary to become an Andrew Luck Second City and my time in Chicago.” 18 / AVON MAGAZINE / JULY 2017 / AvonMagazine.com

Now, three years into The Kent Sterling Show, which airs on weekdays from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. EST, Sterling begins formulating the day’s program as soon as he rolls out of bed and begins checking his Twitter feed for breaking sports news. As a primer for the afternoon show, Sterling also posts a brief live video each morning on Facebook to get his followers and listeners excited about the biggest stories of the day. “I try to go places that radio people typically don’t,” he says. “If the Colts or the Pacers are going to have media availability I’ll go over to their facilities and sit in, and get a one-onone (interview) or two. I think I can get just a little bit more understanding if I go the extra mile and go places, and sit and listen to people speak. Because of that, I think we have the best guests in town and the best insight in town. With the Indianapolis 500, we did our show from the pace car garage every single day the track was open.” Sterling feels early involvement in athletics helped shape his professional work ethic and discipline, and he says the same of his son Ryan, who played

basketball as an undergraduate at Loyola University in Chicago. “I got to see firsthand how sports informed him and made him the person that he’s become,” Sterling says. “He just graduated from law school at IUPUI and sports are a big part of what he’s accomplished — figuring out how to manage his time and how to see adversity as something he can overcome rather than as something that’s going to discourage him.” Sterling says he probably couldn’t name a single favorite interview among the wide range of sports personalities with whom he’s spoken on air, but a few certainly stand out in his mind. “Johnny Bench was really stellar,” he says. “I did about 25 minutes with him and couldn’t stop asking him questions. There are some guys and girls you just enjoy talking to, who are willing to reveal parts of themselves. You feel like there’s an implicit trust where you can’t ask them a bad question. Stephanie White and Matt Painter are like that. The people with Butler basketball are so enjoyable to talk to.” After three years as a full-time sports radio personality, Sterling’s passion and painstaking commitment to his craft show no signs of fading any time soon. “If I ever wind up seeing sports as something I have to do instead of something that I get to do, I’ll probably pack my bag and go do something else,” Sterling says. “But I don’t envision that ever happening. I love writing about it and I love talking about it. There’s so much that happens within each athlete and each team. It’s endlessly fascinating.” For more details on The Kent Sterling Show, visit cbssports1430.com/ shows/kent-sterling-show.

HIT THE DANCE FLOOR AT ARTHUR MURRAY DANCE STUDIO Writer / Heather Chastain

My husband and I have been married 11 years and only danced with each other once — on our wedding day. We did the obligatory swaying back and forth. Dancing is a passion of mine. I grew up taking jazz and tap lessons and even took a few ballroom dancing classes in college. Dancing is not my husband’s thing at all.

“Anybody can do this,” he says. “It’s like martial arts. It’s just acquiring a skill. It’s going to be fun and easy. We teach with positive encouragement and the teachers want you to succeed.” Bow says the Avon dance studio has a wide age range of students. The youngest student is nine and the oldest is 86.

Stepping on the dance floor at Arthur Murray Dance Studio made my husband apprehensive, but the lesson was wonderful.

“People from all walks of life come to Arthur Murray,” he says. He teaches business owners, medical professionals, educators and engineers.

We started out with very basic steps. In fact, we simply started out walking. Our instructor described us as walking “Wizard of Oz” style. She was in between us with our arms linking hers. We walked forward and backward several times. Then we did a rock step. Then we graduated into doing the box step, fox trot and tango.

“There aren’t many hobbies that can refine you and make you into a more attractive human being,” he says. “The beauty of it all is such a positive change for people. It helps people rediscover who they are.”

Even though I promised not to laugh at him, I couldn’t help but chuckle as my husband concentrated so intensely while I was chatting away with the instructor as we moved. But he left feeling more confident he could dance after a few more lessons. Owner Jack Bow boldly stated he can get anyone dancing in 30 days.

Bow added that ballroom dancing is great for those who are going through a change in their life, such as becoming empty nesters or losing a loved one. Some of the dances you can learn at Arthur Murray are the Cha Cha, Disco, Fox Trot, Mamba, Merengue, Rumba, Salsa, Swing, Tango and Waltz.

The Cha Cha is one of the most popular Latin dances within the United States. The Cha-Cha was born from a variation of the Latin Mambo known as “triple Mambo.” The percussive effects of the infectious rhythm of “one, two, one-two-three” produced the onomatopoetic name Cha Cha Cha. The energetic rhythm of the Cha Cha encourages you to cut loose and let your personality show. The Waltz, often called the “mother of all dances” originated in Italy in the 1600s as a round dance called the Volte. It arrived in America in the early 1800s and was the first social dance in which a woman was held in a man’s arms. Learning to Waltz is elegant. The Waltz develops “graceful movement” and “poise.” Every wedding reception, social “black-tie” formal and holiday party includes Waltz steps. You can take your first lesson at Arthur Murray for free. Stop in or call at 317-300-5599.

quality of the products.

The Avon Farmer’s Market has kicked off again. Every Tuesday, from June through September, between 4 to 7 p.m., local vendors congregate in the south parking lot of the Avon Hendricks Regional Health Building off of US Hwy 36 to sell fresh produce, baked goods and unique handcrafted items.

“The fresh produce tastes great,” Connor says. “The candles I get here always burn wonderfully and smell fantastic. And I often see neighbors when I’m shopping.”

Tuwanna Roberson, owner of Louise’s Sweets, has been a vendor at the market for three years, selling marshmallow pops, bubblegum necklaces, gourmet flavored Oreos and caramel and chocolate-covered pretzel rods. “I started this business full-time in 2013 and always enjoy being out at the market, interacting with folks,” Roberson says. Avon resident Debby Connor likes shopping the market because she appreciates the homemade and homegrown

Customers say they like to support the local economy, which is why many, like Josh Graves and his daughter, Mariah, are weekly shoppers. “We’ve come regularly for the past three years,” Josh says. “I like the fact that so many vendors sell non-GMO and organic products.” “I like the honey sticks!” Mariah adds.

Farm in Lebanon is a family representative for Becky’s Market Farm, a business that formed in 1968 by Coffey’s greatgrandfather. “My grandma, Becky Hawkins, started out growing flowers,” Coffey says. “Now we sell asparagus, strawberries, sweet corn, watermelon and cantaloupe.” The market offers a wide variety of items, including specialty desserts, craft jerky, tiedyed t-shirts and tasty jams and jellies. In addition, there are fragrant flowers, kettle corn, beads, bread, pretzels, soap and body butter — truly something for everyone. Pat Lenne says she likes to snoop around for things that you can’t find at a grocery store.

AUGMENTED REALITY DEBUTS IN TOWNE POST NETWORK MAGAZINES All Nine Hyper Local Community Magazines Now Offering Interactive Print Writer / Tom Britt

July issues of the Towne Post Network magazines will be the first in Indiana to showcase the latest in Augmented Reality (“AR”). What has been popular with gamers for the past few years is now making its way into print marketing, adding an interactive layer to an otherwise 2-dimensional print publication.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

1. Download the Layar app to your mobile device. 2. Scan a page with the AR logo on it. 3. Watch the page come to life!

HOW WILL I KNOW WHICH PAGES ARE INTERACTIVE?

Augmented pages will have the AR logo in the bottom corner. By scanning them with the Layar Augmented Reality app, the page will become interactive showing you a video, web links, photos or even shopping buttons.

WHY AUGMENTED REALITY?

Magazines show up once a month, we need to be relevant every day of the month. To do this, our team utilizes social media, direct mail campaigns, video production and now augmented reality to create engaging content and local marketing programs that really work. While AR is still in its infancy with print, we look at it as another tool in our toolbox to help our local advertisers capture measurable results. If you’d like more information on how the Towne Post Network and our 135,000 plus monthly magazines can benefit your company, please give me a call or email. Better yet, scan our Table of Contents page. Tom Britt, Publisher tom@townepost.com (317) 288-7101

WHY THE LAYAR APP?

We have been testing this application for more than two years and found it to be the most dependable and scalable app for AR. What will be a game changer is the release of Apple’s IOS 10.0 this fall, which will include AR for the first time.

Recipe For Success CUNNINGHAM RESTAURANT GROUP CELEBRATES 20 YEARS OF CULINARY ACCOMPLISHMENT

Mike Cunningham is the man behind Cunningham Restaurant Group and restaurant concepts like Mesh, Stone Creek Dining Company, BRU Burger Bar and more.

Writer / Jon Shoulders Photographer / Brian Brosmer

In an industry as challenging and unforgiving as the restaurant business, Indianapolis-based Cunningham Restaurant Group (CRG) is still thriving after two decades, with an ever-expanding selection of successful restaurant concepts including Mesh, Boulder Creek Dining Company, Vida and BRU Burger Bar in Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Louisville and Lexington. Founder, CEO and company visionary, Mike Cunningham, says a thorough understanding of day-to-day restaurant logistics, as well as an innate sense for customer hospitality, are crucial to stay successful in such a difficult field with so many competitors. And he should know because his understanding began when he was in the third grade.

State Technical and Community College, he had worked his way up to assistant manager with the Ground Round Grill & Bar burger chain. Cunningham’s foray into entrepreneurship came at age 22 when Ed Sahm, one of his Ground Round colleagues, decided to open his own independent restaurant and pub – Sahm’s on 116th Street in Fishers – and needed a manager. A few years later, Cunningham was debuting his own concept – a frozen yogurt and café shop called the Big Chill - which would expand to five locations beginning in the mid-1980s.

“This is a business I’ve been in my whole life, so I understand when things are not being done right and know how to adjust and fix things,” Cunningham says. “A lot of people think it’s all fun and good times, but this industry is hard work, and there are many moving parts that can go wrong every The youngest of nine children, Cunningham single day. You have to surround yourself was washing dishes at the local Skyline Chili with people who care and want to strive for down the street from his Cincinnati home perfection day in and day out.” by age eight to help make his large family’s ends meet — an experience that later gave By 1997 Cunningham had observed the way to multiple restaurant cooking jobs rise of TCBY and several other affordable through high school. By the time he had frozen yogurt chain competitors and obtained an associate degree in hotel and decided to sell his Big Chill stores to return restaurant management from Cincinnati to the full-service restaurant game. found a prime location in Brownsburg and opened Boulder Creek Dining Company, offering modern fare and a rustic, mountainlodge setting, now in its 21st year and still thriving. CRG was off and running. “The challenge then, and what the challenge will always be, is finding good people that want to take care of others and have that hospitality gene,” he says. “To make guests feel like they’re home when they’re in your restaurant, that’s what sets you apart.” Avon-based, Italy-inspired Charbonos followed a few years after the opening of Boulder Creek, and CRG continued to gain momentum, steadily expanding and adding new establishments to its portfolio including six Stone Creek Dining Company locations in Indiana and Ohio and Moerlein Lager House in Cincinnati. Cunningham has continued to sharpen his command of all things culinary and currently oversees 21 restaurants in four cities, with two new Indy eateries scheduled to open this fall in the Ironworks Hotel on East 86th Street – Rize, a health-conscious breakfast and lunch spot that will offer catering, and Provision, an upscale lunch and dinner concept. “It was a slow, methodical growth over 20 years, and it used to be one (restaurant)

A lot of people think it's all fun and good times, but this industry is hard work... every two years, and then one every year and then multiple per year,” says Cunningham, adding that CRG currently employs approximately 1,600 people.

Don’t let another Beat the Fallwithout Rush summer pass & Make your Backyard your dream backyard!

Adaptation has played a key role in Cunningham’s winning formula, and he says CRG has responded to the rise in customer demand for unique, locally sourced ingredients.

Dreams a Reality

“People want to eat locally grown, healthy food, which is a greener approach for everyone even the restaurants because you’re not trucking your produce from California or your meat from Arkansas or wherever,” he says. “And it keeps those jobs in the state.” Never one to ignore industry trends, Cunningham has gone further than just sourcing local produce from Hoosier growers. He recently purchased a 7,800 square-foot greenhouse on the south side of Indianapolis, where, this summer, CRG will begin harvesting hydroponically grown lettuces, herbs, peppers and tomatoes for its kitchens. “Certainly the local trend is big right now,” Cunningham says. “At our Vida concept, which is new in the last 14 months, we have a hydroponic wall in the kitchen. We’re pulling fresh lettuces and herbs right off our kitchen wall and serving it that day. You have to do things like that and evolve in this kind of business to keep things fresh and interesting for everybody.” For additional information on Cunningham Restaurant Group, visit crgdining.com.

Welcome to Susie’s Place CHILD ADVOCACY CENTER CONTINUES TO GROW

Writer / Melissa Gibson

In the late 1970s, Lieut. Susie Austin, with the Hendricks County Sheriff ’s Department, was known for child advocacy and is responsible for several of the first prevention and education programs. Fast forward to 2017, her namesake, Susie’s Place, Child Advocacy Center in Avon and Bloomington handled 1,018 cases of child victim crimes last year and continues to grow across the state.

Today, staff at Susie’s works cases from more than 29 counties and several from neighboring states. In 2011, a second site was opened in Bloomington, featuring an onsite medical facility and in May a third site opened in Terre Haute, serving six surrounding counties and granting some much needed local services.

“I never thought when we opened in 2009 that we’d be where we are today,” Perry says. “If we feel like we can do good work for kids “Children were not being treated in the best, somewhere and we feel like we have the most appropriate way when it came to child resources and support, we should do it.” victims, particularly in sex crimes cases,” Not all child advocacy centers are the same, says Director Emily Perry. but they do operate under a core set of values. “That wasn’t specific to Hendricks County, that’s kind of how it was in general,” she says. “We were treating kids as adults in the criminal justice system. So it really required a new way of thinking about how we could be successful and the victims not be traumatized by the investigation.”

They must work with a multi-disciplinary investigative team: law enforcement, CPS, forensic interviewers and mental and medical health professionals. The environment should be child friendly and the center must be information sharing 34 / AVON MAGAZINE / JULY 2017 / AvonMagazine.com

to ensure the child doesn’t have to repeat their story unnecessarily. Perry says what’s known about law enforcement, however well intended, is few officers have training to interview children, particularly those with special developmental needs, if English is not their first language or if they are highly traumatized. At the child advocacy center, their 24/7 services allow law enforcement to immediately bring in a child suspected as a victim of violence. Age two to young adults and adults with special needs will find two separate waiting rooms with age appropriate movies and snacks. “We try to pay attention to the details,” Perry says. “Anytime someone is here, we want to treat them like a guest in our home, and we want them to feel like they are taken care of.”

One issue the facility has recognized is the desperate need for education within the community. “What we have learned after working 6,000 cases is that people really don’t understand what is happening in their community,” Perry says. “Part of that is that they don’t want to know and understand, and the other part of that is that people have a really hard time wrapping their mind around these really horrific things that can happen, in their home, in their family, certainly in their kid’s class at school. People struggle to accept reality that is going on with kids.” In response, Susie’s staff created the prevention program, Stewards of Children Training, aimed at teaching adults how to recognize abuse and what to do about it. “These are athletes, these are straight-A students, these are high socioeconomic backgrounds,” Perry says. “They are not immune to this. They are really good at keeping secrets about it, but they’re not immune, so we need to do a better job of shining a light on this issue.

“It’s not just sex crimes against children, although that accounts for 80 percent of our cases, but kids that are being horrifically abused, kids being starved, head traumas and neglected by caregivers,” she adds. Another battle the facility encounters is the anxiety and need individuals feel to not get involved. Perry says each and every person is a mandatory reporter. “You’re not reporting that you know abuse has occurred, your reporting that you suspect something has happened,” Perry says. “You don’t have the obligation to go out and do your own investigation but to report the concern and then the investigative team can determine if that is founded or not.” Together, the community can work to decrease the numbers and get children to safety.

One might think the situations dealt with at Susie’s Place each day would leave employees drained and depressed, but Perry says that’s not the case. “It’s not depressing to work here,” she says. “It’s the end of the bad and the beginning of the good for a lot of these kids. So, to be in that moment where you can see them turn the corner and they are moving into safety, that’s heartwarming, not heartbreaking. That fills me up. It’s our mission to serve these kids.” Check out their website for more information on the annual Masquerade Mayhem Ball this fall and don’t underestimate the small donations. HENDRICKS REGIONAL HEALTH LAUNCHES MOBILE TELESTROKE PILOT PROGRAM

Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing

Telestroke enables doctors to begin a medical evaluation of suspected stroke patients using iPads via FaceTime while traveling to the hospital in an ambulance.

To save valuable time when treating stroke patients, Hendricks Regional Health neurologist, Scott Cline, MD, thought how great it would be if a patient could start to be Cline spoke to doctors in Virginia for evaluated while en route to the hospital. advice on how to get something similar up and running in Hendricks County. Then, “We’re working to reduce our ‘door to needle he and emergency physician, Jim Nossett, time.’ That’s how fast we treat somebody MD, in collaboration with local EMS, from the time they arrive until they get the brought the pilot program to life. to more quickly administer a clot-busting medication. Fire/rescue professionals in Plainfield, Brownsburg, Avon and Danville are currently participating in the pilot. “We say, ‘time is brain’ and literally, that’s the case when somebody’s having a stroke,” Nossett says. “Every minute, two million brain cells die [that can’t regenerate] and so if you compound that — five minutes, 10 minutes, an hour —you’re losing a lot of brain, and the disability is going to be much worse.” EMS providers know how to deal with

people possibly experiencing a stroke. They do it every day. They literally bring a portion of the hospital to you and they bring the care you need immediately to you right away. If you need to get to a hospital fast, EMS can get you there more safely and quickly than you or a family member can drive. In addition, you cannot take care of yourself in a car nor can you take care of a friend or family member while driving. “That’s what telestroke is all about,” Nossett says. “We’re trying to cut off time from when the patient arrives at the hospital to when they can be treated and that happens by doing some of the things we would normally do in the ER in the back of the ambulance.” Cline explains that using telestroke is essentially a one-to-one FaceTime connection wherein the EMT personnel in the ambulance rings the ER team and they work, in tandem, to gather a patient’s history and perform the exam. “Everything flows from there,” Cline says. “It’s as simple as an iPad here and an iPad there.” According to the Centers for Disease

Control, 795,000 people in the United States have a stroke annually, most of which are caused by a clot blocking blood flow to part of the brain. If the patient can get medical attention within a matter of three to four and a half hours (though sooner is better), physicians can administer a drug called tPA that breaks up the clot and restores blood flow to the brain. “We’ve seen some remarkable results with tPA,” Nossett says. “Some patients come in unable to speak or are even paralyzed on one side. Then they get the drug and within an hour, they’re talking to their family again. Getting that drug as soon as possible means they have a much better chance of experiencing way less disability and maybe even being completely normal.” Hendricks Regional Health is certified as a Primary Stroke Center by Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program (HFAP). This means the hospital system has an experienced team available round-the-clock to provide immediate and critical care to stroke patients. They also create special outpatient stroke clinics and support groups to help those in recovery. Hendricks Regional Health is five-star rated by

Hendricks Regional Health neurologist, Scott Cline, MD.

Healthgrades, which means clinical outcomes are statistically significantly better than expected when treating strokes. “[The five-star rating means that] our care and quality are as good as it gets,” Nossett says. “That’s because we have so many people — from the administration to the physicians, nurses, technicians and secretaries — who are committed to quality.” And quality starts with innovation. “Our goal is to always be on the forefront of the highest quality,” Nossett says. “Doing so makes a difference.” Sometimes that’s the difference between life and death.

DENISE GIANNOTTI: KEEP CALM AND DRESS SMART melancholy and lost interest in pursuing activities she had previously enjoyed. In an attempt to help, Denise’s sister invited her to a black tie event. She reluctantly accepted and then realized she had not bought a new dress in four years. She headed over to the mall and asked the sales woman who helped her for the works: an evening gown, jewelry, shoes, handbag and even a coat. She tried everything on and was amazed at the feeling that came over her; her mood suddenly brightened, and she felt happier than she had in a long while. “I knew right then what to do with my life. I wanted to start a business where I could give other people the same feeling I was having right then. I wanted to share my knowledge of fashion with people who were struggling with their bodies or their image in order to help them feel better about themselves,” Giannotti explained.

Writer / Julie Yates

Some people have a talent for foreign languages; other people are skilled mathematicians. Denise Giannotti’s gift is the ability to coach others on how to look their best. The realization that she had this knack not only got her through a difficult period in her life, but continues to brings her happiness as she empowers others to present their best image to the world. Giannotti’s pathway to becoming an image consultant, fashion stylist and custom shopper began when she was in high school in Illinois and worked at a store called Betty’s of Winnetka. Later, while getting her B.A. degree from Colorado State University in Fashion Design, Merchandising and Business, she dressed mannequins for the Denver Department Store.

After college, due to her husband’s career, she lived in Pennsylvania, Texas, Venezuela and Washington, D.C., where she worked as buyer in local department stores. In addition, she had the opportunity to travel throughout Europe and South America while purchasing merchandise for sale in the United States. Eventually, her family moved to the Indianapolis area, and she worked for the legendary L.S. Ayres department store as well as the now closed Lazarus department store. She also found time to get a master’s degree from Indiana University in Textiles and Clothing Education.

This insightful moment was the springboard that led her to develop her business as an image consultant and stylist, not only for women of all ages, shapes and sizes but for men as well. Her clients have ranged from the president of a major company featured on the cover of an industry magazine to the drummer of a local band. With her eye for what looks good on different body types, she is able help her clients put their best foot forward without spending a lot of money.

Giannotti sums up her philosophy by saying, “When someone steps out, they are presenting to the world the masterpiece that is them. My job is to take away their sense of Then, eight years ago, her husband died after panic when they shop and chisel away until a brave fight against cancer. Hog Farm to Heaven Avon Gardens Offers Flowers, Trees, & Wedding Memories Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing

T

he property on which Avon Gardens sits has been in Karen Robbins’ family for 150 years. Her grandfather farmed the land, growing soybeans, corn, chickens and hogs. Karen grew up down the road from the farm and recalls playing on the property as a child. When her grandpa died in 1987, Karen transformed a portion of the land into her own personal gardens since she adored plants, flowers and everything nature. “I feel like being out in nature creates enriching experiences that make people feel alive,” says Karen, who spent two years cleaning up the property. This included tearing down the chicken coops, incubator house, and outhouse, pressure washing off nearly two centuries’ worth of accumulated grime on the structures and renovating the 200-year-old barn, which oozed vintage charm with its massive mortise and tenon beams.

mostly day lilies and hostas. In 1990, she opened Avon Gardens to the public, selling plants on the weekends.

“It’s amazing when you think of all the weather that structure has seen in its day,” she says. “Yet even during the most terrible windstorm, it doesn’t creak.”

“It was a hobby out of hand — very low key,” says Karen, who at the time had a fulltime job as an accountant. “But that’s how it all started — from my love of plants.”

Once the property was restored and tidied up, Karen brought 10 truckloads of plants from her other home so she could start making display gardens. Initially, she planted

By 1995, Karen had expanded her hours and her season, opening Wednesday through Sundays from April through October. Now Avon Gardens is five acres

of botanical gardens with more than 3,000 varieties of annuals, perennials, shrubs and trees. They also sell garden art, including metal pieces, benches, bird baths, fountains and trellises. They also organize Fairy Garden & Container Garden workshops in the garden center. In addition, Karen and her staff provide personal landscaping services. “We love creating beautiful yard-scapes for people that go beyond the run-of-the-mill design,” Karen says.

For instance, when Indiana was slammed with torrential rains in late April, it wreaked havoc on the property as ponds filled up with dirty water, which Karen had to drain and refill. Karen’s commitment to keeping a pristine atmosphere is evident as one strolls the garden’s grounds. People are constantly telling her how lovely it is. In fact, a German woman once told her that she’d visited gardens in many countries and in all of her travels, Avon Gardens was the nicest she’d ever seen. This beauty is precisely why years ago customers repeatedly inquired about holding their weddings in the gardens. Finally, in 2000, Karen started offering wedding packages to brides and grooms. Not many outdoor wedding venues exist in Indiana that provide a true garden setting. Most places offer an outdoor option for the ceremony but move the reception indoors. At Avon Gardens, however, the entire AVO-N131?is set AvonMagLateJuneAd.qxd 6/12/17 experience in nature.

“A lovely breeze blows through the reception area,” Karen says. “The tree frogs sing and the warm glow of the candles provides a romantic ambiance.” Rachel Ann Klinefelter, who married at Avon Gardens last year, describes the venue as “fairytale-like.” And Cody Flynn, a wedding attendee, gushes, “If you think [this place] is beautiful during the day, wait until you see it at night!” With more than 100 weddings held at the venue every season, rarely is there room to host other events. But for just a $25 donation to the maintenance fund, anyone can bring a photographer and shoot pictures in the gardens — an ideal setting for senior portraits, engagement announcements and maternity photos. The photo sessions do have to be scheduled ahead of time, however, to ensure they don’t conflict with a wedding. When no one is exchanging vows, though, folks are welcome to walk through the gardens and enjoy the scenery. Karen’s greatest joy is seeing her gardens grow. She likes that every day the landscape is slightly different, depending on what’s blooming. “To me, that’s what makes gardening interesting — the evolution of the plant,” says Karen, who calls perennials the true performers of the garden. “They’re like friends coming back to see you,” says Karen, noting that she’s had a clump of Shasta daisies in the front gardens that have been in that same spot for more than two decades. “Every year they grow four feet tall, bloom their heads off, are cut back and return the next year.” Though being tucked back off of county roads makes for a heavenly matrimony hideaway, the secluded location means that many Avon residents don’t even know the place exists. “Every year I’m astounded by the number of people who tell me, ‘Gosh, I’ve been driving down this road for 15 years and never knew any of this was back here,’” Karen says. This year the National Hosta Society and the National Iris Society will hold their conventions in Indianapolis, and Avon Gardens will be a stop on each society’s garden tour. “More than 700 people will come from all across the country to the town of Avon to see our gardens,” says Karen, noting that in the past 27 years, Avon Gardens has been included on more than a dozen national plant tours. “The irony is that we are sort of famous in the plant world. Just a few people in my own county have heard of us.” Check out the most beautiful best-kept secret in Hendricks County, located at 6259 E. County Road 91 N. A TASTE OF EUROPE ARTISAN PICNIC USES FRESH, LOCAL FOODS FOR CASUAL DINING

Photos provided by Courtney Geyer

Writer / Lynda Hedberg Thies

The weather is warming up, more of what we do is outside and that means it is picnic season. There is nothing quite like taking some time to relax outdoors and enjoy casual dining with your loved ones. If you’re looking for ways to plan the perfect summer picnic without all the effort, Artisan Picnic, a new locally-owned, Fishers-based business, has just what you need to make your next picnic with friends and family memorable. Picnics can be as simple or as sophisticated as any meal you plan, but having the option of placing an order online to create the perfect picnic can take away the stress of planning the meal and put the emphasis on time with family and friends. Sarah Reuter,

founder and owner of Artisan Picnic, came up with the idea while vacationing in Paris, France a year ago. The inspiration to bring a European, earthfriendly gourmet picnic, filled with fresh, local artisanal foods, literally came in the middle of the perfect picnic in Champ de Mars Park in Paris near the Eiffel Tower. “I had a moment where it just hit me that I wanted to recreate and bring this experience back to Indianapolis,” says Reuter, a former travel executive. “In Europe there is a bread shop, cheese shop, a meat store, a wine store on every corner, and as I was having this amazing picnic experience, I thought, ‘I want to recreate this experience using local food artisans and farmers.’” INDY METRO / JULY 2017 / TownePost.com

She began thinking about some of the local cheese shops and markets right in her neighborhood, realizing that there were so many local butcher shops and bread makers popping up. Reuter realized this was a viable idea as she recalled all the amazing local food artisans and how it might help their businesses. too. Their gourmet picnics include a wide selection of fresh artisanal foods with three choices, “The Frenchie”, “The Italiano” and “The Veggie”. “The Frenchie and The Italiano menu options are similar to the traditional styles of French and Italian Charcuterie (cured meats) and cheese boards,” she says. “Each of the options consists of local artisanal bread, cheeses,

charcuterie, sweet and savory spreads, something pickled and something sweet. The Veggie menu simply leaves out the meat and adds in a variety of fresh local seasonal vegetables and fruits. Reuter is partnering currently with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra on their lunch break series in June and three coming up in July where she will be onsite to offer the picnics so you can enjoy the concert without having to worry about getting lunch beforehand. Artisan Picnic is also partnering with the Indianapolis Museum of Art, Fishers Farmers Markets, The Original Farmers Market downtown Indy and is working to expand with more vendors at popular events around the city. If you are interested in trying one of the picnics, check out their calendar of events to see where they will be located throughout the season. Since they do not have a store-front yet, all orders need to be placed online through the website to pre-order and pay for your picnic prior to their event that is on their calendar. Or you can order a picnic for an event of your choosing. Reuter can work with individuals or corporations with advance notice. When a local business is set up to support other local businesses that gives their customers great food and makes spending time with your friends and family easy to enjoy summer, then everyone wins. Order your picnic and let’s support our local food artisans in Indiana. MAKING A SPLASH Avon High School Swim Coach Has Team on the Right Track Writer / Heather Chastain

Coach Jon Karr

Success on the Avon High School swim team comes one stroke at a time. “The sport itself is brutal,” says swim coach Jon Karr. “The kids have to work hard and it’s not for everybody. You have your face in the water, you’re looking at a black line and trying to figure out when you’re going to breathe again.” It’s not just the mental impact on the athlete but the physical impact as well. The team has 10 practices a week — five mornings, four afternoons and Saturday practice. “We’ve been very successful, but that’s not the ultimate goal,” Karr says. “The ultimate goal is to produce valued members of society. I want them to go out and do the best in whatever they do.” While the coach is proud of the achievements his team has produced in the pool, including several state champions, state record holders, national Top-16 finishes and in 2016 a national high school record holder, he’s also proud of their achievements out of the pool.

Reaching the Heart.... Teaching the Mind.

Karr has been with the Orioles since 2004. As an athlete at Columbus North, he was a six-time Indiana High School state champion, including three straight state titles in the 100 backstroke.

“Over spring break I read six books. I like to read books that I can apply to myself as a coach and then to my team,” he says. “I can already see the impact of what I learned since spring break.”

While at Auburn University, he was a six-time All-American and a member of the 1999 National Championship team. He was also a member of an SEC championship and record-setting 400 Medley relay team. His swimming career culminated when he competed in the 2000 Olympic Trials in Indianapolis.

Karr has twice been named State Coach of the Year (’14, ’16) by the National Federation of High School (NFHS) Coaches Association. This group is the official national coaches association of the National Federation of State High School Associations.

Since he began coaching, Karr says he’s grown tremendously as a coach. “I had been part of some great programs,” he says. “I knew what great swimming was, but I didn’t know how to implement it. I have some great people in my corner who have helped me grow.” He also never stops learning.

“I really believe in what we do,” Karr says. “It’s all based on how you can get better today. It’s nice to know the commitment and the craft we’re giving our kids doesn’t go unnoticed, but it’s not about the recognitions.” One notable coaching opportunity happened in the summer of 2015. Karr helped coach Chandler Bray to qualify and earn a sixth place finish at the World Junior Championships becoming the

2nd and 3rd fastest 17 to 18 swimmer in United States swimming history in the 200 and 100 Breaststrokes. In addition to the high school program, Karr is also in charge of the club program. The club program is open to all swimmers. The coach says he enjoys watching all of his swimmers perform and reach their goals or perform at a level they didn’t expect. “When you see the smiles on the kids’ faces knowing they just did something they didn’t think they could — seeing that smile on their face and the belief in their heart is awesome,” Karr says. The club program competes across the state as well. Younger swimmers can also take swim lessons at the high school. Students from the swim team teach the classes. AVON GRADUATE HEADS TO WEST POINT ACADEMY GUNNAR LARSON TALKS TAP OUTS, BAKING AND BOOT CAMP Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photographer / Doug McSchooler

Gunnar Larson always had a hunch he’d attend military school. “I like the idea of serving my country and all the opportunities that go along with it,” says Larson, who heads to West Point Academy in July to begin boot camp. Though Larson researched several schools, he felt a pull at his heart when he toured the campus of West Point Academy, located 12 hours away in Highlands, New York. Larson, who graduated from Avon High School in May, plans to major in civil engineering and hopes to later join the

Potter and Lord of the Rings.” Army Corps of Engineers because the idea of designing structures and roads appeals to him. Further down the line, post-retirement, When one of his buddies had a conflict, however, a baking show was born. Though he aspires to own a restaurant or bakery. Larson plans his recipes in advance, he never tests them out prior to the show. “I’ve always loved cooking and baking,” Fortunately, so far only one trial recipe Larson says. In fact, it’s a long-standing turned sour — literally. family tradition among his parents and three siblings to create holiday-themed “I made macaroons and used cream treats, including mouth-watering cheese frosting, then let them sit out for Thanksgiving pies and tasty Christmas cookies. Last August, he launched his own two hours rather than refrigerating them,” Larson says. “Oops.” YouTube show called “Baking in LOG, (Land of Gunnar).” He also unleashes his creative side “It wasn’t originally planned to be a baking through music, having played the oboe show,” Larson says. “My friends and I were for four years and recently picking up going to do a podcast type of thing where the ukulele after his family vacationed we would discuss nerdy topics like Harry in Hawaii. 64 / AVON MAGAZINE / JULY 2017 / AvonMagazine.com

“I like the island music, so I bought a $10 toy ukulele to mess around with, but it wouldn’t stay in tune so I got a real one,” says Larson, who enjoys listening to everything from classical and instrumental to pop and country. He also enjoys old rock as well as Disney soundtracks but Christian gospel tops the list. Favorite artists include For King & Country, MercyMe and NeedtoBreathe. As a young kid, Larson and his family regularly attended Kingsway Christian Church. When wrestling matches interfered with Sunday morning worship services, Larson began skipping church. His freshman year of high school, however, a friend invited him to youth group and Larson was reminded of how much he enjoyed being in God’s presence. “I didn’t realize how much I missed church until I got back into it,” Larson says. When he lost the state wrestling match last year, he blasted himself for not giving a better performance on the mat. When he took his frustrations to God, his perspective shifted. “I recognized that in the grand scheme of things, this loss wasn’t a big deal,” Larson says. “I had another year to improve. Things would probably work out for me. And for the most part, they have.” Though Larson is a bit anxious about attending boot camp this summer, he tries his best to shove aside the worry and focus on the exciting changes that lie before him— like meeting other students and bonding with his wrestling team. In his free time, he promises to FaceTime his parents, the two people he credits with molding him into the man he is today. “Mom demonstrated the importance of a strong faith,” Larson says. “Dad taught me to give my all by pushing through any mental and physical barriers I may encounter.” They both taught him the joy of pies and cookies. Q&A WITH TOWN COUNCIL MEMBER

Greg Zusan WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND?

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE THINGS TO DO IN AVON?

I am a graduate of Burlington (Wisconsin) High School, attended the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and am a graduate of the University of Wisconsin School of Banking. I currently work at the Brownsburg branch for the State Bank of Lizton in commercial lending.

Running the scoreboard at the Avon High School football games! I also just really like being active in my community. I’ve been a member of the Avon Rotary Club, I’m an active member of Avon United Methodist Church, I’ve been on the YMCA board. Being involved is really my favorite thing to do in my community. I also really enjoy Rib Fest and the Heritage Festival every year. I also like seeing people out at the town hall park walking and exercising.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN AVON? My family has been living in Avon since 1990. My wife and I are the proud parents of four daughters who all have been part of the Avon School System and graduated from Avon High School. When we first moved to Indiana, we didn’t know where we would end up, but my wife is from Bloomington so this seemed like a central place. WHAT WAS IT LIKE WHEN YOU FIRST MOVED HERE? It was much smaller. We only had one strip center – Avon Crossing. There was also a Monty’s Market, Avon Hardware and a local Subway and Dairy Queen. WHAT HAS KEPT YOU IN AVON ALL THESE YEARS? For one, Avon Schools. Avon has a really phenomenal school system. Also, the friends and relationships we’ve made throughout Hendricks County. I really value the friendships I’ve made here.

I’ve been on the town council on and off for 20 years. It’s just one way I can give back to the community. I like the challenge, and I want to make our town a great place to be – a destination for people. WHAT IS YOUR VISION FOR AVON? I want to change the tax structure and create more revenue and growth. With that growth, we need to improve our roads. We also need to bring in businesses unique to Avon, not just the big box stores. We could have medical buildings or manufacturing companies looking to relocate from Marion County or simply made Indiana their home. It’s great to see some of the projects people have been talking about since we moved here coming to fruition like the bridge over the CSX train tracks on Avon Avenue. It’s going to be a bit of an inconvenience for people for a time, but once it’s over, it’ll make a lot of people really happy. We live over by the library, and I used to tell the kids if they heard the train horn, they’d better make a plan B when they left the house.
