Gray Eagle resident Anna Shults said she knew early on what she wanted to be when she grew up: a teacher. Today she is living her dream and doing it very well; she is not only in her tenth year as a third grade teacher at Fall Creek Elementary school but she has also been awarded the prestigious honor of being named Indiana Teacher of the Year for 2007. This HSE teacher was chosen from 47 educators from public and private schools.

Now, she could receive national honors as she prepares to represent Indiana at a national competition in Washington, DC next spring.

After the surprise announcement at her school September 14th, she has received dozens of emails and students asking for autographs. “How surreal is all this? The whole thing is amazing!” the bubbly, darkhaired teacher said when I stopped in to see her. Mrs. Shults taught my daughter when she was in third grade three years ago. I learned more about Anna Shults that year than any teacher my children have ever had.

Meet Your Neighbor: Anna Shults (Continued from Front Cover) just a couple of months. So, when she earned the state’s top teaching honor, I wondered if there was a little magic in all those stories she told the kids over the years.

Shults says that is part of her joy of teaching, getting to know the students and their families. She says she tries to make that connection during the first few days of the school year. “I sit at my desk at the end of the day and ask myself what I learned about each child in my class that day. If I can’t answer that, I know I missed the beat,” she said. “The students have to know they are number one.”

What has she learned during her years as an educator?

Shults said, “Each child learns at their own pace, and in their

own way. You can’t get frustrated, they will learn in time.”

She added what a wonderful honor it is to be named the state’s Teacher of the Year and it is also a reflection of the quality of teachers throughout HSE Schools. In fact, the last two state finalists were from HSE and teach at Fall Creek Elementary. Kristie Cassidy of FCE was named a finalist in 2006.

We’re going to stop at four wineries – Huber, Vine Tree, French Lick and Carousel and we’ll have a full day of wine tastings, tours, breakfast, wine tastings, lunch, dinner, wine tastings, souvenir wine goblets, and door prizes from atGeist advertisers and sponsors. Oh, did I mention that we’re doing some wine tastings? Yum!

John Gianfagna just spoke to us about Creating Hope, a local not-for-profit that provides painting lessons and supplies to cancer patients all over the country. Little does he know (yet) that this event has raised over a $1,000 for Creating

Hope. By the time my wife Patty is finished buying the handmade souvenirs that John’s wife Tina brought along, it’s probably going to be closer to $2,000. Oh well, it truly is for a great cause and MAYBE SOMEONE ELSE WILL BUY SOMETHING SOON. We just started playing an “onthe-bus” game that is part Jeopardy, part Trivial Pursuit that will test everyone’s knowledge of wine. We divided everyone into four teams with the names of famous wine regions – Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champaign and Franzia. The Franzia team – led by the likes of the Zingrafs, Britts, Rolfsons and Tollinis put up a valiant effort but in the end – the Burgundy team was just too eager to win (jeez!) and ultimately they did. In contrast, the Champaign and Bordeaux

Geist Christian Church Branching North into Fishers

When Pastor Randy Spleth started Geist Christian Church 21 years ago, the small congregation of just 31 people couldn’t have envisioned what it would become two decades later.

For Spleth, there’s a little bit of deja vu when he looks at the 22-acre parcel surrounded by bean fields. When the church purchased its Mud Creek site in 1987, it, too, was a bean field.

With about 2,500 people attending services and special programs, Geist Christian ranks among the largest churches in the area, and the rapid growth shows no signs of slowing.

Although the church just finished a 15,000-square-foot addition to its facility at 86th Street and Mud Creek Road, plans are underway for a North Campus to be built in Fishers.

“We were running out of buildable land,” Spleth said. “We went to a location where the

out” space, including a gymnasium and other sports facilities. It will also allow expanded opportunities for the whole family, with more preschool and kindergarten programs, Spleth said.

The site of the church’s future North Campus sits on the northwest corner of 126th Street and Promise Road, just across the street from the new Fishers High School. It’s a perfect fit, since much of the church’s growth is in youth ministry, Spleth said.

The ultimate goal is not to create two separate congregations, but rather to offer more services and programs for the church community at both locations.

Fundraising for the new 25,000-to-40,000-square-foot worship center will begin in the spring, with groundbreaking soon to follow, Spleth said. He hopes to be in the facility sometime in 2008.

“We hope to become the hub of the area where people want to be every day and night of the week,” said Mark Briley, minister of youth and young adults.

Heartland Film Festival Rolling Out the Red Carpet This Month

By Susan Zingraf Susan@atGeist.com The Heartland Film Festival is hard at work laying down the figurative red carpet for a weeklong city-wide gorge on the art of film. This year’s lineup includes over 20 films screening in more than 180 showings October 19-27 across three theaters in Indianapolis, including the Indiana History Center, Clearwater Crossing and Greenwood Park. The selection of films spans a wide spectrum of genres and topics including drama, comedy, animation, documentary, war, romance…and the list goes on.

Courage Abounds in Geist Resident with MS, Jamie Broyles Jamie Broyles of Admirals Sound has been named a recipient of the National Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society’s Courage Award. She will accept her award at the 16th Annual Dinner of Champions on November 14, 2006 at the Crowne Plaza downtown at Historic Union Station. “I was shocked and surprised, it makes me feel great, humbled,” Jamie said of learning she would be receiving the award.

Jamie is the mother of three children, Zach (14), Matthew (12) and Ellen (11) and has lived in the Geist area for 19 years with her husband David.

Ten years ago, she was diagnosed with MS, and her doctors believe she had gone undiagnosed since grade school.

Jamie lives with the effects of MS including fatigue, limited mobility, disruption to her

motor skills and a host of other challenges. But she doesn’t let these conditions keep her from living and doing what she can to help fight MS.

She even had her neurologist, Dr. Gust Penos, on the saxophone in the band! Her next fundraising event is a Texas Hold ‘Em party coming up this winter. “We can put an end to the disease if we raise enough money,” Jamie proclaimed.

For the past two years Jamie has participated in the MS WALK in the spring in White River State Park with a team called the Broyles Bunch she assembled with the help of friend and co-captain Mandi Melangton. In 2005 her team consisted of 60 participants that raised over $18,000 for the MS Society. In 2006, she topped that with a team of 186 who raised $31,425.15 (she didn’t want to forget that $0.15!). And she hasn’t stopped there.

Where does Jamie get all this energy? “I have a very supportive family in my husband, mother-in-law, children, my helper Haley and all of my friends,” she explained. “I can no longer drive or write, and it makes it hard with all the kids’ activities,” she continued. “I always say it’s not fair…it’s not fair…but you have to do

Geist Resident Joins Lance Armstrong Team in New York Marathon

By Susan Zingraf Susan@atGeist.com Feather Cove resident Josh Carter will be running the New York Marathon on November 5 with Lance Armstrong and a team of 70 other runners from across the country to help fight cancer. Each runner on the team has a goal to raise $5,000, and the money will go directly to the Lance Armstrong Foundation for cancer research.

Carter raised his goal to $7,500, and after only about a month into it, he claims he has already received pledges for a little over half of his total goal.

“I feel blessed. I’m healthy; it’s an easy way for me to help,” Carter commented. After hav-

ing lost family members to the disease, Carter quit smoking and chewing tobacco and lost 40 pounds. “I thought it was selfish of me to live the way I was living after I saw what cancer did to my family.”

If I can use my legs to raise money for cancer research, I’ll do it,” he added.

Carter runs all around the Geist neighborhoods and to the marina. He said, “I run so much around here, my neighbors all wave to me. I’m the Forest Gump of Feather Cove.”

He says he’s out running every day, either early in the morning around 5 a.m. or after work around 5 p.m. So if you see a guy running in a Chicago Marathon hat, blue shirt and black shorts, give him a wave.

Oaklandon Civic Theater Presents “Academia Nuts” in November

By Pat Carlini Pat@atGeist.com If you’ve never seen the Oaklandon Civic Theatre or the tiny, historic church it calls home, now may be a good time. I recently stopped in on rehearsal night for their upcoming production, “Academia Nuts.”

The show opens November 3rd at the Oaklandon Unitarian Universalist Church at 6450 Oaklandon Road, where the performances take place.

“Academia Nuts” is the story of Professor Peter Smedforsen, who lives in a quiet New England town in the former home of poet E.R. Lennox whose writings are the subject of Peter’s scholarly life’s work.

upside-down when he is invaded by a series of unexpected visitors. There’s the free spirit Tammi, who says her car broke down outside his home. There’s Judith, another Lennox scholar, and Judith’s evil ex-husband who is trying to unearth a hidden manuscript in the home.

As far as the little 35-member church, it was organized in 1850 and is the oldest Unitarian Universalist congregation in the Indianapolis area. It was ravaged by fire twice in the early 1920s and rebuilt as the building you see today. At the rear of the building, a wooden stage was built behind a huge wooden firewall that can be raised and lowered by a simple crank.

Mt. Vernon Graduate Selected for Miss Indiana USA Pageant

By Susan Zingraf Susan@atGeist.com A girl’s dream has come true for 2005 Mt. Vernon High School graduate Erin Simpson...the dream to be in a beauty pageant. After about a six-week screening process, Erin was selected to participate in the Miss Indiana USA pageant November 3rd-5th in Merrillville, Indiana.

“Just to be chosen is great and very rewarding,” Erin said, sitting comfortably at Mama Bears for our interview. She spoke with excitement and a glimmer in her eye about this unique opportunity. “This is an awesome experience, I am enjoying every minute of it and want to make the most of it,” she said.

Also, she prides herself on the fact that she did not want her parents to contribute any of the money. “I wanted to do this independently and not lean on them. I’m glad I did it this way because I learned a lot.” she explained.

Born and raised in Indiana, Erin has lived near McCordsville since the second grade. She remembers loving hair since she was a little girl, and this passion led her to getting her cosmetologist license through the Walker Career Center Academy of Cosmetology at Warren Central High School while she was still in high school. She works now as a stylist at Harbour Day Spa & Salon.

I asked Erin what she feels strongest about in herself going into this contest. “My morals,” she said with no hesitation.

“My whole goal in life is to show morality and be a good role model.” What does Erin want to get out of this whole experience? “The satisfaction of knowing I did it and that I

Local Pak Mail Location Given National Award Helping people is what Erin already loves to do. She is an active member of Oaklandon Christian Church, and she went on a church mission trip to New Mexico to a Navajo Indian Reservation that helped put life in perspective. “Seeing such poverty I learned how blessed I am, and being able to help them was very rewarding.” Erin wants to do more mission trips in the future, with or without a crown, and she has plans to volunteer at the Crisis Pregnancy Center.

Halloween Fun, Facts and Safety Tips

It was the Irish who started carving gourds and turnips in Ireland. But in the 1840s when the Irish came to America to leave the potato famine, they found out quickly that pumpkins were much easier to carve.

So how did this translate into “Jack-O-Lantern?” According to an Irish tale, a man named Jack (who was a trickster and a

drunk) fooled Satan into climbing a tree. Jack then put a bunch of crosses at the foot of the tree and made Satan promise not to take his soul upon his death. After Jack died, he was denied entry into Heaven because of his evil ways, and the devil kept his promise not to take Jack into Hell. On Jack’s way out of Hell, the devil handed him a branch of fire to light his way in the dark. The ember was put inside an old hollowed out turnip to keep it glowing longer. The Irish used turnips in the tale, then upon their entry into America and discovery of pumpkins, they changed the turnips to pumpkins.

Fall Creek Teachers Bring Space Camp Experiences to the Classroom Three weeks after school ended last spring, four teachers from Fall Creek Intermediate School (Jill Fabiano, Jeff Harrison, Brad Lowell and Dan Renckly) headed south to Huntsville, Alabama. There they embarked on a weeklong excursion at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center.

The program, Space Camp for Educators, was funded by the Honeywell Corporation.

The global group of teachers completed an intensive educator curriculum focused on space science and exploration.

In addition, they participated in real-life astronaut training.

While at Space Camp, the teachers participated in a number of hands-on learning activities. Besides the educational workshops, teachers were given the opportunity to simulate two space missions in which they were assigned a role on either the Orbiter, the Space Station, Mission Control, or conducting an extra-vehicular activity (aka a space walk).

During the week, Space Camp provided the opportunity to participate in Astronaut Simulations which included the 1/6th Gravity Chair, the MultiAccess Trainer and the Manned Maneuvering Unit. Dining Divas Head “Far East” to Thai Café This month, the Divas opted to steer away from our trusty Italian and Mexican restaurant choices and go for a walk on the wild side. Thai Café, located in Broad Ripple, seemed to fit the bill perfectly. Open since 1998, Thai Café has been the recipient of several Indianapolis Monthly Awards, including Critic’s Choice Best Hot and Spicy Restaurant for 1998, 1999 and 2000; Critic’s and People’s Choice Best Thai Restaurant for 2001 and 2002; and People’s Choice Best Thai Restaurant for 2003 and 2004.

Known for its originality and nutritional value, Thai food contains many spices that were brought to Thailand by foreign traders, including the Portuguese, the Dutch, Arabs, Indian, and Chinese, who were traveling the ancient trade channels between India and

China. It is not uncommon with Thai character to incorporate novel ingredients with native herbs, spices and sauces to create distinctly new Thai dishes.

Our group of six arrived on a Thursday evening without a reservation and was quickly seated in a corner table and offered drinks. Thai Café offers a modest wine and beer selection and also has traditional Thai drinks on hand, like Thai tea. While waiting to select our meals, we were able to take in the festive surroundings. The cozy setting with authentic Thai décor is in stark contrast to a large screen television, viewable from almost any angle in the restaurant.

An impressive list of entrees is available. After finding one that appeals to your palate, one can choose to personalize the dish by opting to add either beef, shrimp, pork or chicken (not a necessity as the vegetables were delish), as well as selecting the heat level. We were kindly informed by our waiter, Pablo, that if we liked spicy food we should choose level two or three, and that levels four and five should only be requested by those individuals who could handle “Thai hot.”

We found that level two was perfect—hot enough to experience Thai heat without leaving us with injured taste buds.

Since many of the Divas had never had Thai cuisine, we selected what Pablo informed

us were the most popular dishes, Pad See Ewe (or Drunken Noodles, stir-fried yellow or rice noodles prepared with eggs, onions, vegetables and sweet soy sauce), Pad Thai (stir-fried rice noodles prepared with egg, tofu, green onions, ground peanuts and bean sprouts), and Masaman Curry (your choice of meat prepared with coconut milk, masaman curry paste, potato and peanuts.) The Drunken Noodles were a hit, and we tried the dish with beef, chicken and shrimp (although one dish had to be returned to the kitchen).

The crisp texture of the vegetables was a nice contrast to the noodles, and the intense seasonings provided wonderful flavor. The Pad Thai was selected with pork and was thoroughly enjoyed, as was the Masaman Curry with chicken.

For dessert, we chose the Tapioca pudding, which is prepared with vanilla and sliced water chestnuts. Though we found the pudding to be flavorful, the texture of the water chestnuts was not well liked.

Another dessert option offered is black rice with whipped cream and cooked down with sugar.

In general, we found our experience at Thai Café to be mediocre. The Broad Ripple

strip mall location makes for easy parking and is perfect for meeting up with a group of friends from all over the city.

We enjoyed the comfortable atmosphere and the unique Thai flavors; however, our inability to select our top appetizer choices, the main dish that had to be returned to the kitchen, and our waiter’s lack of knowledge of menu item ingredients all contributed to a less than ideal dining experience.

Time to Winterize Your Boat, Helpful Hints

By Susan Wallace No one wants to realize that all the fun on the water is coming to an end. Over the past 7 years that I have worked on Abaco Dock's Boat Storage program, it never fails that a diehard boater comes in for storage in the last week of November.

The big thing that they did right was reserve a spot for storage early!

The following are some helpful tips for the boater with a boat lift and canopy to help make the end of the season a little easier.

1. Take the boat lift canopy off first, or have someone take it off for you. The biggest mistake that boat owners make is taking the boat off the lift before the canopy is removed. Why take your

canopy off first? So you can use the boat to walk around in to take off the canopy. Not even the pros can walk on water! It also prevents you from having to borrow a boat to take it off. Also, cleaning your canopy a couple days before you take it off will help preserve its life. Only store your canopy when it is completely dry. Otherwise, it will grow mold and mildew over the winter if it is still wet when you fold it up.

cracks. If you can’t get your boat out of the water in time, lower the boat and drive into the water just a bit. You don’t need to completely float the boat. The air will get to freezing that night but the water won't, so the water will become an insulator to your engine and keep it nice and cozy for the night. A cracked engine can cost as much as $5,000 to be replaced, so ideally you want to remove your boat before this type of weather hits.

When you pull your boat out for the season it is also a good time to clean out the interior and check the registration stickers and arrange to get the new ones if they are close to expiration.

2. Get the boat into storage before the extended overnight freezing. It is starting to get cold, and when you hear the weatherman say “this week’s forecast calls for overnight freezing” you need to get your boat out of the water right away and winterize the engine before the engine block freezes and

What you may not have realized is that the Sept. 30/Oct. 1 event at Fishers’ Heritage Park was actually a fundraiser for the Sister Cities Association of Fishers. The price you paid to be transported for a day into sixteenth-century England will allow local high schoolers to travel to Billericay, England, next summer. A group of students and teachers from the London suburb were in Fishers during the first week of October, thanks to proceeds from last year’s inaugural Ren Faire.

Billericay in 1998 as part of the national Sister Cities movement, originating with President Eisenhower’s Peopleto-People initiative launched in 1956. The goal was to link cities all over the world as a way of achieving world peace by increasing understanding of different cultures.

Members of the Fishers Sister Cities Association selected Billericay because it is also a suburb of a large, metropolitan city, with a family-oriented community, some agriculture and light industry.

The idea of staging a Renaissance festival came about as a way to educate the local community, as well as raise funds needed for student exchange programs. Proceeds will also pay for improvements at Fishers’ Billericay Park,

which was named to honor the sister cities’ relationship.

It’s ironic that the park, off of 126th Street near I-69, is largely a baseball park, with arguably the nicest Little League diamonds in the area.

Baseball doesn’t exist in Billericay, England, where cricket, rugby and football (that’s soccer here) rule the sports arena.

I caught up with the four exchange students and two teachers from Billericay at their city’s namesake park during their visit earlier this month. It turns out, athletics aren’t the only differences in taste between Americans and Brits.

Daisy Peacock, who is in her 10th year at The Billericay School (equivalent to 9th grade here), was amazing her peers

with a description of this “strange but really nice” food she had tried with her host family called a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Others recalled their amazement at being offered donuts for breakfast (they’re served for dessert only in England). And most shocking of all to the British students was the portions they were served at Texas Roadhouse and Bob Evans.

The group also was amused by the ways students at Hamilton Southeastern were dressing for their junglethemed homecoming week.

“It’s quite fun,” said Tom Cliffen of The Billericay School. “I saw a cow and a guy in a skirt.”

“Food here is sweet and big,” marveled Austin Brown, of Billericay’s Mayflower High School.

Food wasn’t all that seemed larger in Fishers, with its sprawling landscape of homes with well-manicured lawns.

During their stay, the delegation visited both Fishers high schools, area businesses, Conner Prairie, a town council meeting, and of course, the Fishers Renaissance Faire (along with four other

Aside from being a fundraiser and educating the community about Billericay, the fair has given many local residents with a flair for drama an opportunity to be cast members, or just to dress up and have fun.

Don Wenger of Fishers met his wife, Susan, at a Renaissance fair, and the two (along with daughter Katie Beth) often travel to fairs throughout the country to perform or just enjoy the atmosphere.

He’s happy to have a Renaissance festival so close to home.

attracting good acts,” Wenger said.

This year’s event drew in crowds from as far as Pennsylvania, Illinois and Kentucky, said Diane Eaton, president of the Sister Cities Association of Fishers. It’s not only good for the association, it’s helping Fishers’ economy and creating a fund-raising opportunity for other local nonprofits who serve as vendors (like the Kiwanis Club, which ran the Kids Karnivale).

Proceeds from this year’s Faire will be used for an outbound student exchange, with teachers and students from Fishers’ two high schools traveling to Billericay in June 2007.

“We can only continue the program if the Ren Faire is successful,” Eaton said.

Hop on a Hayride at Local Fall Festivals

Fall is the perfect time for outdoor festivity. Not too hot or too cold, autumn is just right for reviving your senses and venturing out on a hayride at one of the nearby places that celebrate Fall and family traditions.

Whether it be a tractor pulling a wagon to the pumpkin patch, through the brilliantly colored woods or on its way to see the Headless Horseman, kids and hay are a winning combination (provided you don’t mind a little hay stowing away in shoes, clothes and hair)!

Visitors to Stonycreek Farm’s 34th annual Pumpkin Harvest Festival will find no shortage of fall festivities. The 50-acre farm off of Ind. 38 east of Noblesville offers everything from an inflatable haunted house to a gourd slingshot and a giant straw pile for kids to frolic in.

Now through Halloween, visitors can pick their perfect pumpkins from the patch and take in as many other games and crafts as their budget allows. Admission is free on weekdays and $5 per car on weekends. Pumpkins are priced by diameter, and other amusement is priced a la carte, with most activities $1 or $2. The Country Market sells elephant ears, apple dumplings and other festival food. Hours are 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily.

Now through Oct. 20, Tuttle Orchards also offers wagon rides to its 8-acre pumpkin patch, where pumpkins are priced by diameter. Kids can see live farm animals and play in a children’s activity center, while adults and older children will enjoy navigating their way through a 5-acre corn maze.

Milking a pretend cow is part of the fun at Smith Family Farms, where kids can also visit live goats, pigs, sheep, ponies and geese.

Mom of five and Highlands at Geist resident Michelle Grelle never lets the season pass without picking up a few gallons of Tuttle’s freshfrom-the-orchard cider, made from 23 varieties of apples grown on the farm (which is about 10 minutes east of Oaklandon).

“They’ve got the world’s best apple cider,” Grelle said.

“However you serve it, it is so yummy. It’ll make you smack your lips.”

On Oct. 28, families may participate in a pumpkin-painting contest, make cornhusk dolls and enjoy hot dogs and s’mores around the campfire while listening to the folksy music of the Indianapolis Dulcimer Society.

She tells that several years ago she contacted a company called Woman’s Life Insurance Society based in Michigan

thinking they might offer attractive products to market to woman. She found this to be true but, more importantly discovered they are a not-for-profit company begun in 1892 by a woman schoolteacher, Bina West. Today, they still have the same mission as they did over 100 years ago, to help women help their families through life insurance and benevolent activities. This mission really spoke to Donna.

Geist Jewelers: Got Bling?

Joining the commercial boom at 116th Street and Olio Road is a new kind of jewelry store: Geist Jewelers, open since April 2006. Owners Beth and Dennis Morton each gained experience in the industry coming up through the ranks with national retail jewelers. In the business for 30 years, Dennis was with a mall-based chain for 17 of those years, ultimately as an executive. Partner and owner Mark Hackett, in addition to national retail experience, was a store owner for several years on the West Coast. Believing they could offer more value, innova-

tion, style and service than the retail chains, the Mortons and Hackett were determined to create a more appealing retail jewelry store that is a neighborhood establishment. “In a big company, the chain of command is so long it’s difficult to respond to trends, fashion and client needs and wants in a timely manor,” suggests Dennis. The new partners thought they could “do better” in responding immediately to clientele.

Basketball is Always in Season at the Fieldhouse

By Jill Supancik Jill@atGeist.com Basketball season is almost here and at The Fieldhouse in Fishers it is always basketball season! We are “Hoosiers” after all and it is in our blood to play the ole hoop now and again all year round! You could step in this awesome facility and yell “Hickory” and listen for the echo and watch for Gene Hackman to appear or you can sign up for some great instruction or practice.

I met with Mark Tamm who, along with J. Scott Burton, owns the facility that houses seven courts under one roof.

The facility is well planned, smoothly run and sponsored!

In talking with Mark, he definitely wanted people to know that they are not competing with the other programs in the area and would like to be an additional resource for not only learning skills but also an enthusiasm for the game. The

kids’ league is a great experience as far as sportsmanship in that the overall feel of the arena teaches them to deal with the sport and the attitude within the sport. Basketball is a great team sport and I think one of the fundamentals that kids need to learn early is a healthy attitude toward the game and others. Why not do this in a positive and structured environment where everyone wants the best for you as a player.

This spot is perfect for this age group as the court isn’t so big and intimidating like some of the other courts in the Fieldhouse would be for a child. Anyone who wants to play above this level is more than welcome. They have a variety of leagues for women and men in different skill levels. (Just ask my husband about this, who said he was definitely in the wrong group!) You can be

Dino Batalis Gives to Geist Community and Beyond

By Susan Zingraf Susan@atgeist.com As a Geist area resident for 19 years, Dino Batalis is no stranger to this community, in more ways than one. A family man, married with two children, Batalis masterfully juggles a variety of responsibilities and activities that keep him busy, balanced and motivated for more.

Since 1988, Batalis has been a fireman for the City of Lawrence Fire Department and has expanded his responsibilities and involvement into much more than fighting fires.

For starters, Batalis is the driving force behind the Lawrence Fire Department Needy Family Fund’s year-round charity. This charity collects donations from the community such as furni-

ture, clothes, appliances and food to help families that have been wiped out by fire or are impoverished. The charity started in 1988 giving to three families and has grown to helping 502 families in 2005. “We go all over the township and beyond, we don’t put boundaries on this giving,” said Batalis of this Santa Claus experience he organizes every year.

program called Fireman as Role Models (F.A.R.M.) where once a month he and other fireman go to Sunnyside Elementary 1st grade classes to help teach students. “I just like to help people,” Batalis said of all of his community activities. He says people say to him that “‘no’ is not in your vocabulary.”

After the 9-11 tragedy, Batalis participated in the 750-mile cross country fundraiser run from Indiana to New York City with other fire and police officials from around the state, raising $329,000.

Also, each year early in the school year Batalis orchestrates Public Safety Day at his fire station that includes a variety of safety demonstrations including a SWAT team and K-9 team, a safety house demo and other activities. It’s a day for families to participate in an interactive event to learn about safety.

In addition to all of this, Batalis has a full-time job as a manager and agent for Banker Casualty Group. If that wasn’t enough, he currently serves on the Lawrence Township Advisory Board, and top it all off, he’s running for Lawrence Township

Twenty-eight year barber Gary Wiley poses inside of his McCordsville barber shop.

Gary attended barber school forty three years ago. In the barber school, his teacher made all the students clean out railroad cars in Beanblossom. He had a great idea while cleaning to someday put a barber shop in one! While he started the shop in McCordsville twenty eight years ago, the caboose came fourteen years later. He had just spent a fortune on his daughter’s wedding when he thought about his railroad car barber shop again, only the timing wasn’t quite right just yet due to finances. Then, his grandson Aaron arrived and a few years later was playing with train tracks and a caboose on his lap which he took as a sign that it was time to realize his dream of owning a caboose with a barber shop in it. He

The structure itself resembles a train station with an actual ticket window by the door with a figure inside meant to collect the tickets and an actual caboose on the side!

Gary states that without the help of Ron Seals he couldn’t have pulled it off. Ron purchased one of the cabooses for two thirds of the total price.

The feat of getting the railroad car to McCordsville would be easy, right? Well, the cars were a little worn out and couldn’t meet traveling standards on the rail, so they had to get creative.

They decided to load it by crane onto a truck and ship it to him. Going out of town, the car standing up on the truck would not pass under the bridge so they then had to turn the car onto its side on the truck to fit under the bridge and continue its journey to McCordsville.

Inside the shop is definitely eclectic. You would have to visit Gary for a haircut to understand; however, there are

Kids can watch a Thomas the Train DVD while they are in the chair. There is a map of the United States from 1840-1880 that shows where the train tracks were at that point spreading west but hadn’t reached farther west than Texas. When you are finished with your haircut you will be sent out the back door and off the caboose!
