5 unit housing development on an infill site Stage 3 | 2019 This project aims to transform an unoccupied site, which had become a destination for fly tipping, into an aspirational group of homes. The proposal, which is centred around a sociable community garden, provides generous internal living spaces and four private garden spaces.

The design for this project was already finalised when I joined the practice, but was a good opportunity for me to apply my rendering skills to produce visualisations for the planning application submission.

ROYAL HILL

SPECIALIST COUNCIL HOUSING ON A BACKLAND SITE Stage 2-3 | 2019-2020 This Project aims to provide 7 high quality homes in Greenwich, specially designed for Adults with learning disabilities. Sited on a disused policse station car park with neighbours on all sides the project was not without constraints.

Joining the team at stage 2 I helped develop the design to prevent overshadowing and any potential loss of privacy.

Once we had finalised the design I build a presentation model for client and planning discussions and prepared the sections and elevations to be submitted for planning.

BOYTON FARM

LISTED BUILDING EXTENSION & RENOVATION Stage 1-3 | 2019-2020 Working for an elderly client who had recently aquired the property, we were tasked with making it more suitable for their specific needs.

I led the design for the proposal at stage 1, determining various options for the layout, having been briefed by my director. As the project progressed to stage 3 I worked alongside a more senior team member to ensure the feasability of the design.

This extension to the property connected the main farmhouse to a newly renovated outbuilding. The proposal provides a spacious new kitchen with a view to replace the narrow and cramped existing one which can be repurposed as a cosy sitting room. A new entrance at the top of the drive provides level access for the elderly occupant as an alternative to the steeply stepped front door.

CAMBRIDGE BUDOKAN

Urban Sports Hub for Cambridge Year 3 | 2019

As a part of a collaborative studio masterplan, this project repurposed an existing Curry’s PC World retail unit into a multipurpose sports facility. The new hub addresses a lack of dedicated martial arts and cycling facilities outlined in the Cambridgeshire Sports Facilities Strategy with an outdoor velodrome and indoor dojo. The Budokan also houses skateboarding and e-sports facilities in order to bring these often isolated fringe sports into the centre of urban activity.

The design is constrained by the structural rhythms of the existing steel structure. An elevated running track surrounds the main internal hall, providing views down onto the activities below whilst leaving the roof structure above visible below. Through an architecture of adjacency and translucency I hoped to encourage cross-sport interaction and increase participation.

Sports buildings can have a very high energy demand. In order to make the Budokan more sustainable a ‘box within a box’ environmental strategy is employed to create a comfortable exercise environment in the central hall. A double skin cladding of CLT and polycarbonate sheet helps insulate the building. Domed polycarbonate roof-lights allow for natural daylighting without significantly increasing solar gains and earth pipes in the velodrome foundations help to stabilise heating and cooling loads year round.

My role was to prepare presentation drawings for residential projects already in the later stages of their design. This proposal was a refurbishment and extension of an existing two storey building in Wimbledon. This view looks out from the bedroom onto the proposed second floor roof garden.

Liminal Treetop walkway Year 2 | 2018

The brief for this project was to create a liminal space in Leyton Marshes which engaged with the inherent tension between marsh and city at the site. The project began with an investigation into Kazuo Shinohara’s Tokodai Centennial Hall (Tokyo, 1987). The building is defined by a glistening steel hemi-cylinder which protrudes from the fourth floor which reflects the tension between town and gown. I proposed a hemi-cylindrical walkway clad in polished steel which would frame a new gateway to the marshes, adjoining to the existing Lea Valley Ice Centre.

In my second year studio, students were encouraged to draw and model without colour wherever possible, echoing the ‘oulipo’ constraints of Italo Calvino’s writing. This allowed me to test the limits of lines and forms as a mode of representation. ‘the building might have fallen into the realm of the grotesque with the slightest mistake.’

I was the head of events for my University Architecture Society (ARCSOC) in my third year.

I led a team of students to raise over ÂŁ13 000 towards the end of year exhibition by hosting ticketed events. For each event we created a theme and decorated the venue accordingly.

The Toybox

GRAPHICS Each event required graphics and posters for social media advertising. Many of our graphics were a team effort, but pictured opposite are event banners for which I was individually responsible. With my experience from ArcSoc I was hired to do the graphics for Murray Edwards Garden Party 2019.

As a commission from an external client, I took the time to evaluate the brief, working closely with the client to iron out concerns over branding and messages. The eventual outcome was a success, with the event selling out over 1000 tickets within 2 hours of release.

ArcSoc Summer Show - Studio 1 Area Year 3 | 2019

Every summer, Cambridge ArcSoc hosts their self-funded end of year exhibition in London.

In my third year I led the design and construction of the space for my studio at the Ugly Duck in Bermondsey. With plenty of experience using timber in previous years, we wanted to minimise timber wastage this year and chose to implement a system using wire rope and turnbuckles to hang drawings and models.

Each student was given their own banner to curate with individual work, which would hang away from the uneven and messy wall surfaces. We built tables for our group site model and individual models which were recycled for use at the Three Wheel Drive Festival in Hampshire. A studio brief to create white paper sectional models gave us an opportunity to create a hanging system for the models which imposed minimal loads on the cables above.
