Community Development Update

The Tolowa Dee-ni’ Nation is located in an area renowned for its scenic beauty, exceptional water quality and abundant natural wildlife. Our area is also subject to devastating wildfires, earthquakes and landslides as naturally occurring events. The Gilbert Creek Food Sovereignty Building is designed to manage and mitigate the impact of natural and economic disasters by providing a central distribution point for basic services during emergencies. Our new 6,000 sq. ft. cold storage facility was constructed to address the concerns of disruption to key services and instantly meet the demand for food accessibility. A key component of the project is the installation of a backup generator. In addition to providing emergency power to the food storage building, a commercial grade generator ensures Public Works’ essential services remain operational during inclement weather. Both buildings are critical to the Nation’s operations and ability to quickly monitor, assess and respond during emergency situations ensuring vital resources are available during unanticipated power outages. The Tolowa Dee-ni’ Nation mission statement reads: “Honoring Our Past; Serving Our Tribal Family; Protecting Our Culture and Independence; And Controlling Our Future,” being able to be self-sufficient for our citizenship and community, creates a tool to help see that mission through, for generations to come.
