REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE: How to Recycle Batteries Safely!

Thanks to our Tribal Environmental Program, there are now designated battery recycle bins at all of our tribal offices to ensure safe disposal of used batteries.

Batteries can contain metals such as mercury, lead, cadmium, nickel and silver, which can pose a threat to human health or the environment when not managed properly at the end of their service life. To safely dispose of batteries, follow the guidelines below:

 Used batteries should NEVER be thrown into household garbage.

 Tape the terminals of the battery and store in separate plastic bags to prevent fires from batteries in the garbage.

 Use designated battery recycle bins now located at tribal office buildings.

 Never store batteries in an area where they can freeze or overheat.

GIS PROGRAM OF THE YEAR AWARD

Tolowa Dee-ni’ Nation is the recipient of the Tribal GIS Program of the Year Award! The award was presented during the opening session of the Tribal GIS Conference at Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute on Tuesday, April 30, 2024.

Henry Sanderson, Tolowa Dee-ni' Nation GIS Specialist said " I received the Tribal GIS Program of the year award because of the databases, geodatabases, file system and supporting files. The award is for having more data than any tribe in the country, big and small tribal programs, and having this data organized and structured in a way that allows a user to locate and use any data they need at that time. The award is for the databases, the back end creation that most people don’t see or know about, the organization, maintenance, updates, access and ease of use.

During the presentation of the award Tribal GIS said “We commend you for the strong geospatial foundation your staff members provide to better serve your community.”

Congratulations Henry Sanderson! Thank you for all that you do.
