“What’s In Your Medicine Bag?” Family Unity Activity

On June 9, 2022, the Victims Services division of Community and Family Wellness hosted the fourth activity in the series “What’s In Your Medicine Bag?” This family event was held at Dat-naa-svt Community Center. The series “What’s In Your Medicine Bag?” is a monthly family activity that focuses on gathering skills for resiliency and healing through culture-centered activities. These events include a family-friendly book written by Native American/Alaskan Native authors, a traditional craft, and discussion about what we can add to our “Medicine Bag” to foster resiliency, strength, love, healing, and faith.

This month, families came together for a craft night where we created the past three months’ crafts (medicine bag, dream catcher, and “me” jar). We discussed what each craft is and how it plays a role in our own “medicine bags.” Kits provided to the families included the book and one craft kit of their choosing, per family member. In appreciation of their participation, families were able to choose their gift of either a party tray or picnic backpack. Those

who completed the survey and provided photos of their projects were also able to choose between a duffle bag or a Medicine Wheel throw blanket.

Be sure to sign up for the next Family Unity Activity event. We are now meeting in person! These activities are open to Native American/ Alaskan Native families residing in our service area with at least one child under the age of 18 living in the household.

Shu’ shaa nin-la to all who participated in this month’s activity!

-Krystal Woods, Community and Family Wellness

**Please note starting in July, the day and venue are changing. The new day will be the second Monday of each month. The new venue is Howonquet Hall.

Please contact me with questions or to sign up for next month’s activity.
