Dv-laa-ha~ Tribal Citizens, Shu' shaa-nin-la for attending the May 22, 2022 Ch'i~s -lu Chay-yii-ne Lhetlh-xat (Thank you for attending the Cemetery Clean Up and Elder Gathering). It was a beautiful day and a great turn out. This annual gathering brought in over 60 community members, including 20 elders.

This year’s event was a wonderful success and was only made possible because of you, those that came and dedicated their time to tend to the graves of our loved ones and our ancestors. As we honor those that have come and gone before us, we recognize the great significance of the Memorial Day Holiday. We recognize, appreciate and honor all of our tribal citizens that served in the various armed services and continue to serve our Country. We honor their sacrifices and are eternally grateful for our freedom.

WHAT DOES VAPING DO TO YOUR BODY? Vaping & Lung Illness Submitted By: Elidia Adams-Loya, Health Promotion & Education Specialist, NATIVE Tobacco Project United Indian Health Services, Inc. What does vaping do to your body? A sudden and severe lung illness from vaping has affected over a thousand people in the US, becoming a public health crisis. Nearly all patients have been hospitalized, receiving treatments including medically induced comas, breathing machines, and other life support measures.

Patients experience a range of warning signs before going to the hospital. Doctors have treated patients with many different symptoms, from trouble breathing to lung damage that looks like chemical burns. The exact cause of the outbreak is unknown, but here’s what we do know: • • •

HOMEOWNERS GUIDE TO SUDDEN OAK DEATH A plant disease commonly called Sudden Oak Death is threatening coastal forests in California and Oregon. Currently found in coastal California counties from Monterey to Humboldt and in a small portion of southwest Oregon, the disease is caused by the pathogen Phytophthora ramoru (pronounced Fi-TOFF-thor-ra ra-MOR-um). Sudden Oak Death has resulted in the death of millions of tanoak and coast live oak trees. In addition, more than 35 other plant species are susceptible to the pathogen, yet most of these species suffer only minor damage, limited to leaf spots or twig dieback.

Though Sudden Oak Death is a forest disease, it is common in urban-wildland interface areas, so it presents many challenges for homeowners. This guide addresses homeowner concerns, including diagnosing infected trees, disposing of contaminated material, and understanding treatment options

Tribal Citizen Jalissa Cole graduated from Sunset High School on June 14, 2022. Jalissa was awarded the 2022 Trail Blazer Award. Jalissa is kind hearted and beautiful inside and out. Her family is extremely proud of her and wish her the best in her next chapter. Jalissa Cole is the daughter of Holly Lopez, the granddaughter of day-sri John Lopez Sr, and the great granddaughter of day-sri Robert Lopez Sr. and Ethel Lopez.

Alyssa Hash, daughter of Christal Hash, and descendent of Chamet, graduated 8th grade from Rogue River Middle School, in Rogue River, Oregon, with a Presidential Academic Award and a Mathematics Excellence Award!

BENEFITS OF HEALTHY WATERSHEDS Ecosystem Benefits and Services Healthy watersheds provide many ecosystem services including, but not limited to: nutrient cycling, carbon storage, erosion/ sedimentation control, increased biodiversity, soil formation, wildlife movement corridors, water storage, water filtration, flood control, food, timber and recreation, as well as reduced vulnerability to invasive species, the effects of climate change and other natural disasters. These goods and services are essential to our social, environmental and economic well-being.

The wide array of critical ecosystem services provided by healthy watersheds is frequently undervalued when making land use decisions. Due to the complexity of natural systems and economic precedents, it is difficult to assign a dollar amount to a particular ecosystem service. However, there is a large body of research and evidence to support the fact that intact healthy ecosystems avoid costly restoration and ecosystem service replacement, and provide long-term economic opportunities and jobs. Some healthy watershed ecosystem services include: •

Improved water quality. Natural landscapes and floodplains filter pollutants from point and nonpoint sources, promote nutrient cycling, and help retain sediment.

• Carbon storage opportunities. Watersheds with intact natural land cover and soil resources are capable of sequestering carbon, thereby offsetting greenhouse gas emissions (Hanson et al., 2010).

• Increased resilience in the face of climate change threats. Intact floodplains and riparian areas enable healthy watersheds to be better adapted to more extreme weather patterns and changes in precipitation associated with climate change.

• Reduced risk for invasive species colonization. Naturally functioning ecosystems are more resilient and can favor

indigenous species, helping them outcompete invasive species.
