12840 Mouth of Smith River Rd. in Smith River Xaa-wan'-k'wvt Head Start (Parking Lot) The Tolowa Dee-ni' Nation will be hosting a meat distribution for tribal citizens. The goal is to increase tribal citizens' access to traditional and healthy foods. Bags will include chis-chu svn' (elk meat) and lhuk (salmon). In addition to chis-chu, elders will receive locally raised hay-k'vs svn' (pork meat). All tribal households are eligible to receive 1 bag (a household is defined as a registered tribal address – no exceptions) .

Bags will be available for pickup on Friday, January 7th, from 10:30 am-2:00pm at the Xaa-wan'-k'wvt Head Start parking lot. If you are an interested tribal household, your bag must be picked up at the designated time and place, please have your Tribal ID with you.

RJ LOFTIN, STAR RUNNING BACK FOR WARRIORS FOOTBALL Tribal Citizen, RJ Loftin was recently awarded the Offensive MVP by the H-DN Big 4 Conference League.

He had over 1,500 total yards for the season, 18 touchdowns, 9 games of rushing more than 100 yards and averaged 134 yards a game. RJ is currently a junior at Del Norte High School and a 3rd year varsity player for the Del Norte Warriors.

He’s a proud Warrior who demonstrates the importance of being a student athlete by maintaining honor roll status since his freshman year. RJ thank you for being such a positive example to our family, community and youth! Can’t wait until next season!!

The Del Norte Warrior Varsity Football team won the H-DN Championships and placed second in North Coast Sections!

MVN'-DVN (HOUSING DIVISION) Advisory Board with other fellow agencies. This has been a positive move as the Nation is getting involved with and trying to find solutions for people who do not have homes and locating resources for tribal citizens.

The 12.9-Million-dollar low-income housing, Dat-naa-svt Village, was completed. This village has been the only low-income housing developed in Del Norte County in the last ten years and the most significant home construction project anywhere in Del Norte County in the past 15 years. The village project infused 8.1 million dollars into the local economy through local sub-contractors and an increase in Tribal Construction Jobs.

Housing Assistance Offered to Tribal Citizens throughout 2021 In Del Norte County, there are approximately 28,000 residents.

Of those 28,000 locals, about 500 of those residents live in Smith River. According to the census, the median household income in Del Norte County is $45,283, with rental costs averaging $878 per month. The TDN Housing Division Staff housing market in Del Norte County and Smith River specifically has been very competitive. Which is why one of the Nation's primary goals was to diversify housing options and create safe, affordable, and sustainable housing for tribal citizens.

In addition to those 21 homes in Smith River, the Nation also broke ground on six more townhouse units overlooking the Dat-naa-svt Village. The townhouse project is still underway, and people in the area will notice the construction over the next few months. The expected completion date for the townhouses is Spring of 2022. Jeri shared that although she is excited to be at total capacity at Dat-naa-svt Village, there are still over 70 people on the housing waiting list.

A watershed – the land area that drains to one stream, lake or river – affects the water quality in the water body that it surrounds. Like water bodies (e.g., lakes, rivers, and streams), individual watersheds share similarities but also differ in many ways.

Every inch of the United States is part of a watershed – in other words, all land drains into a lake, river, stream or other water body and directly affects its quality. Because we all live on the land, we all live in a watershed — thus watershed condition is important to everyone.

Watersheds exist at different geographic scales, too. The Mississippi River has a huge watershed that covers all or parts of 33 states. You might live in that watershed, but at the same time you live in a watershed of a smaller, local stream or river that flows eventually into the Mississippi. EPA’s healthy watersheds activities mainly focus on these smaller watersheds.

The great majority of these involve pollution sources in their watersheds – the land area that surrounds and drains into these waters. Knowing the conditions in watersheds is crucial for restoring areas with degraded water quality, as well as protecting healthy waters from emerging problems before expensive damages occur.

Achieving the Clean Water Act’s main goal depends on having good information about watersheds – their environmental conditions, possible pollution sources, and factors that may

TRAVERSE CITY, MICHIGAN – November 17, 2021 The National Association of State 911 Administrators (NASNA) is issuing a warning to consumers that older phones may cease operating in early 2022 due to the retirement of 3G networks and support for phones using 3G service. This may include other devices that use 3G connectivity, such as some medical alert devices, tablets, smart watches, home security systems, and other devices.

“It is vitally important that the public be aware that national 3G networks will no longer work sometime early next year. These networks support older phones and devices that won’t work after the 3G network goes away” said Harriet Rennie-Brown, Executive Director of NASNA.

The nation’s three major wireless carriers (AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile) have each announced that they plan on discontinuing 3G service in favor of 4G (LTE) and 5G service next year. According to the FCC’s website, AT&T will discontinue service in February, T-Mobile/Sprint will discontinue service between March and July, and Verizon will discontinue service at the end of 2022.1 Most users of these services will be notified directly by the carriers if this discontinuation affects them. However, users of older phones used for 9-1-1 only purposes may not be notified if they do not have active service with the provider. It has long been the practice of some organizations for the homeless or domestic violence shelters to provide clients with older phones with no service, since those phones could still be used to call 9-1-1 in an emergency. Users of those older 9-1 -1 only phones should be aware that they may not work after 3G service is discontinued.

Low income individuals who are concerned that their 9-1-1 only phones may no longer be supported should consider applying for service through the federal Lifeline Program. Information regarding eligibility and participating providers can be found at https://www.lifelinesupport.org/.

XAA-WAN’-K’WVT (HOWONQUET) EARLY LEARNING PROGRAM (XELP) Our Harvest Festival in November included fun projects involving making mini apple pies, fresh apple cider and reading stories on how to be thankful while practicing daily our Tolowa Wee-ya. Our cooks also prepared a full turkey lunch for our Howonquet children.

The Head start was visited by Sammy Gensaw the third who came and shared a sucker fish/eel gambling story and sang along while he drummed.

He also explained that they can come up with the their own songs as long as they have a good heart and good rhythm. Shu’shaa nin-la, (Thank you) for sharing your culture knowledge with our students.

All students received their dental screenings with their own dental provider or through United Indian Heath Services. A big thank you UIHS staff for servicing 14 students.

Our Parent Committee has been active in fundraising. Their See’s Candy Fundraiser was a success. Congrats to Spring Salmon Class Winner: Marlee Reed & Frog Class Winner: Rosemary Maggard. Thank you to all that purchased candy!

TITLE VI AMERICAN INDIAN EDUCATION PROGRAM Dv-laa-ha~ As we are already in motion for the 2021-2022 school year, we want to take this opportunity to reach out to families and community! Currently, 127 Tolowa Dee-ni’ Nation members are enrolled in the Del Norte County Unified Schools District Title VI Indian Education Program.

That’s 20% of the program’s enrollment! Active family involvement and engagement is essential to a child’s learning and development. The program welcomes parent/guardian participation and encourages you to share your time and voice at our American Indian Education Parent Committee (AIEPC) meetings.

The committee meets monthly to receive program updates, monthly data reports, discuss successes and challenges, and plan upcoming events. Throughout the year the parent committee also holds fundraisers and activities to help enhance our student's educational experience.

YOUTH ACTIVITY REIMBURSEMENT FOR 2021 DEADLINE FOR 2021 REIMBURSEMENT IS JANUARY 15, 2022 REMINDER: This program reimburses the participation/registration fees only.

Items not reimbursed include (but are not limited to) special uniforms, clothing, shoes, equipment, books, volunteer fees and travel costs.

Processing of reimbursements take a minimum of 2-weeks.

Please fill out a separate form for each child and for each activity.
