SAVE THE DATE: DEE-NI' NIGHT AND DAY, SEPT 9 & 10, 2022 Tribal Citizens, We have some great news. We are planning for our beloved Dee-ni' Night and Day events.

New this year is Dee-ni' Night for Kids which will be held on Friday, September 9th during the duration of Dee-ni' Night.

This night is available as an option to families that would like their kids to have a special kid friendly version of Dee-ni' Night. Dinner will be served, there will be games, language activities, a movie and more! Children must be potty trained to attend, suggested ages 3-13, serving up to 30 youth. Please RSVP to attend. Doors open at the Howonquet Hall Community Center at 4:15, children need picked up no later than 8:30pm. Tribal gifts for kids will be passed out at this event at the time of sign in. Activities are sponsored by Community and Family Wellness and Education.

The regular more formal, Dee-ni' Night will be held on Friday, September 9th at the Tolowa Event Center inside Lucky 7 Casino. The doors will open at 4:30 with dinner starting at 5:30.

We encourage you to get there early as seating is limited in the Tolowa Event Center. Max capacity is 240 guests. In addition to a dinner, the Nation will be honoring our eldest elders, our tolowa veterans and our 2022 tribal graduates. We invite you and your family for an evening of honoring and gathering.

We ask that those that are able to please park in the overflow parking at the cemetary, the basketball court, UIHS or across the street at Lucky 7 Casino. When walking across Highway 101 to and from Lucky 7 Casino, Fuel Mart and the Dee-ni' Day event please use the cross walk and please be cautious of fast moving vehicles.

BEAR AWARENESS & INFORMATION BE BEAR AWARE There has been an active presence of t'uu-ya~ (black bear) over the last couple months in the Smith River area. This article is intended to provide information to help reduce property damage and conflicts between humans and t'uu-ya~. T'uu-ya~ activity is normal this time of year. The best thing we can do in our community is for everyone to take precautions to minimize or eliminate the things that attract t'uu-ya~ to residential areas.

Fun Facts about T'uu-ya~: •

On average, a t'uu-ya~ is about 3-1/2 feet tall (standing on all four feet) and weighs about 200 pounds, but some males can weigh over 500 pounds. Males are much larger than females.

Although these animals sometimes appear to have a clumsy walk, they are actually quite agile, and when sprinting can reach speeds up to thirty miles per hour. Additionally, t'uuya~ are strong swimmers and excellent tree climbers.

•

T'uu-ya~ are omnivorous, opportunistic feeders. Their diet includes a wide variety of food sources and varies seasonally.

Typical foods include berries, plants, nuts, roots, fruit, honey, honeycombs, bees, insects, and larvae. T'uu-ya~ also catch and eat fish, small mammals, and occasionally larger animals such as deer (particularly fawns). Additionally, they commonly eat carrion (dead animals). While searching for food, t'uuya~ are generally most active at dusk and dawn; however, they can be active at any time of day (observing t'uu-ya~ activity during the day should not be a basis for particular concern).

•

Female t'uu-ya~ generally begin mating at four years of age, and produce cubs every other year. The cubs remain with their mother for 18-20 months, learning to forage and hunt.

•

Over the winter, most t'uu-ya~ will hibernate in dens that they line with leaves and/or pine needles. Dens are often located in large hollow logs and trees (sometimes well above the ground). Females with yearling cubs will hibernate with their cubs. T'uu-ya~ remain in their dens, without eating, until spring. They will often return to the same den to hibernate year after year.

•

T'uu-ya~ are generally very active when winter approaches and in spring. As winter approaches, t'uu-ya~ will forage up to 20 hours a day, intent on storing enough fat to sustain them through hibernation. In spring, when t'uu-ya~ emerge from their dens, they are very focused on eating and will often travel for miles in search of food sources.

Why t'uu-ya~ lose their fear of humans:

T'uu-ya~ have acute eyesight and hearing. Their sense of smell is seven times greater than a bloodhound’s. They have a keenability to detect pet food, garbage, barbecue grills and bird feeders—and once they locate a food source, they remember where it is.

•

T'uu-ya~ are normally wary of people, but if a t'uu-ya~ finds food without getting frightened away, he may come back for more. Each time this happens, he can become less fearful— and this habituation can lead to problems.

•

T'uu-ya~ who lose their fear of people are called “nuisance t'uu-ya~.” These are most often subadult males—young t'uuya~ who have just dispersed from their mothers and are still learning how to obtain food—and mothers with young cubs.

2ND QUARTER ALL STAFF MEETING Yan’-tr’ ee-nash (Shark) Tank The 2nd Quarter All Staff Meeting at Rowdy Creek park was ASHVM! It was wonderful to see so many TDN staff together and the food was delicious! Even the weather was supportive. The team building activity 1st Place Shark Tank Winners! was a huge success. We saw em- Staff: Frank Ault, Chris Newman, Emily Reed, Hannah Richards, Troy Ralstin, ployees working and Marva Jones together with others they may or may not know or have had an opportunity to spend time with before.

Even as the activity, Yan’-tr’ ee-nash (Tolowa for Shark) Shark Tank, was being explained, some looked at though they were not convinced of this idea. Just a few minutes later, every team, the audience and judges were collaborating like pros!

This occasion met several, positive objectives and also many opportunities for TDN and our community: A long-awaited return to in person, social gathering and staff interaction; space to collaborate with others; freedom to be creative in a fun environment; an opportunity to share ideas and contribute to youth activities for our community and super cool prizes!!!

Each Creation Team presented their Youth Activity to the four Sharks (judges) while being cheered on by the Audience. The Community and Family Wellness department paid attention and took note of all of the ideas to incorporate into future youth activities. All of the presentations were creative, fun and entertaining!

Other activities presented were No-Contact Boxing, with a fantastic performance by Meng Lo and Cole Bauman. Sheryl Steinruck and her team The Misfits presented a fantastic idea of The Great Escape ~Tribal Edition~. The Creative Quilt presentation was presented by Taa-xee-ne and was a staff favorite to incorporate into future activities. Chee-yash Bu’-shri was wonderfully presented as a project to teach Tolowa language around the world in a duck-duck-goose style

game.

Not to be forgotten are audience members including the very supportive Troy Padgette with their awesome cue cards and energetic encouragement.

Our Sharks did not disappoint either, throwing tough questions (Myrtle 2nd Place Shark Tank Winners!

Thompson!) and Staff: Andrew Brundin, Sheila Davis, critiques throughout Gloria Martinez, Tim Hoone and the presentations, Linda Ramsland reminders of the spirit of Shark Tank, Tolowa style!

This all staff meeting was a great opportunity for all departments to gather in a creative and social atmosphere of friendly competition and collaboration and friendship.

CONGRESS CLOSES NICOTINE LOOPHOLE

As of April 14, 2022, nicotine not made from tobacco is subject to the same regulations as tobacco products. The FDA has the authority to regulate tobacco products, but the law used to define a tobacco product as “any product made or derived from tobacco that is intended for human consumption.” This has allowed vaping companies to switch to synthetic nicotine and get around regulations meant to protect youth.

Now, the law makes it clear that the FDA can regulate nicotine from any source. Congress included the change in the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2022, which the president signed into law on March 15th .1

ANNOUNCEMENTS

The theme of the Del Norte County 4th of July Parade was small towns, big hearts. The 4th of July float planning committee made up of Tolowa Dee-ni Nation staff came up with this years float idea. Taking the 2022 theme and adjusting it to small villages, big hearts. The float had road signs featuring local village names, a mvn house and heart shaped balloons. The Tolowa Dee-ni' Nation was awarded 1st place in the creativity category. Thank you to everyone who participated to make this years float a success. We had so much fun supporting the community.

The Summer Youth Program has been hard at work learning about all the different departments and services that the Tolowa Dee-ni' Nation Offers.
