WASHINGTON DC TRIP
by tolowadeeni
Tribal Council traveled to Washington DC in March for the first time since the COVID pandemic hit the United States. Priority topics of Tribal Council’s meetings included wastewater infrastructure funding, Oregon State Historic Preservation Officer’s (SHPO) refusal to formally consult with the Nation, expediating the fee-to-trust process, Coquille Tribe’s proposed casino in Medford, Oregon, and a working relationship with U.S. Forest Service.
Tribal Council spent the first day at the National Archives researching historical documents.

On day two, Tribal Council, Executive staff, and lobbyists from FBB Relations, met with Senator Jeff Merkley’s office, the Senate Indian Affairs Committee, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. While at the Corps office, Tribal Council was notified that the Nation was awarded $500,000 in the FY23 workplan for wastewater infrastructure engineering.

Day three meetings included Senator Ron Wyden’s office, Senator Alex Padilla and his staff, Congressman Jared Huffman’s office, Congresswoman Val Hoyle and her staff, and Senator Dianne Feinstein’s office.

The last day of meetings included an informative meeting with U.S. Forest Service, then a visit to the National Museum of the American Indian and the Native American Veteran’ placed for all Tolowa veterans. The day ended with the unfortunate cancellation of a meeting scheduled with U.S. Department of the Interior.
