COMMUNITY PROFILE A blend of history, culture, beauty, and a vibrant economy has made Raleigh one of the most talked about cities in America today. As capital of North Carolina, Raleigh has carefully preserved its heritage and beauty. Raleigh was established as the capital city of North Carolina in 1792, over 200 years ago. However, its history reaches back to sixteenth century England and Sir Walter Raleigh, the Father of English America. Sir Raleigh established the first English colonies in the New World on the shores of North Carolina, working under a patent from Queen Elizabeth I. Raleigh is unique among American state capitals in that it was established on land specifically purchased by the state for its government seat.

Raleigh was considered a sleepy state capital until the late 1950’s when an initiative by the state carved out the now world-renowned Research Triangle Park. This has transformed the city into one of the fastest growing and most desirable cities in America. Since then, it is listed under the Top 15 Cities for Job Growth by Time Magazine, the Top 50 Places to Retire by Fifty Fabulous Places to Retire, and the Second Healthiest City for Women by American Health for Women.
