A spirit of camaraderie was enacted amongst six colleges through Pistang Hinampang, a mixture of traditional games and recreation of Filipinos led by the University of Negros Occidental - Recoletos Supreme Student Government Organization (UNORSSGO) held at the University Grandstand, Nov. 17.

“The main purpose of this [activity] is to remember the culture of the Filipinos. Also, to enjoy and [stimulate] cooperation from each college,” UNORSSGO Department of

Sports Secretary Christel Jane Rezaga said.

The mighty dragons amassed the first place after slamming down other colleges through force and physical stamina in the games of Tug of War, Kick, Luksong Lubid, and Sack Race.

“[CCJE player’s preparation was that] we support [the players] whenever they need something and we boost their morale in order for them to enjoy the events,” CCJE Governor Elgen Bermeo said. Serpents slithered first in the games

JHS triumphs in Recoletos Quiz

Proving their prowess in the history of the university and the Augustinian saints, Junior High School (JHS) Department outplayed eight other departments during the Recoletos Quiz Bowl 2022 organized by the Religious Education Department (REED) and Campus Ministry Office (CMO) at the President’s Hall, Nov. 17.

“[I feel] honored because this is the first time the younger ones, specifically, the Junior High School Department, won this kind of competition,” one of the winners, Ken Matthew Rufin said.

Rufin added that they prepared

themselves by studying and praying for the said contest.

“The essence [of this competition] is that participants were given a chance to cultivate their minds and hearts with regards to knowing the history of the OAR and the Augustinian saints,” one of the Christian Life Formation teachers of the JHS department Ophelia Caytiles said.

Caytiles also stated that their department’s opportunity to achieve the said award was a grace and gift from God.

Composing the JHS team were Christian Gelotin, Ken Matthew Rufin, and Dan Abello Jr., as their teacher ally.

of Longest Line, while the Phoenixes nabbed the first place in Palo Sebo.

The Eagles conquered the other colleges in the game of Dodgeball, while the Tigers were the victors during Dakpanay Baboy.

“Now that we’re adults, the games we played were nostalgic as these were played back in our childhood days,” fourth-year Mechanical Engineering student and one of the players for Dakpanay Baboy Mac Homecillo said.

Homecillo also added that the games

needed the cooperation of every member because the games focused more on teamplay and solidarity.

Pistang Hinampang is composed of eight games: Kick, Dodgeball, Sack Race, Longest Line, Tug of War, Luksong Lubid, Palo Sebo, and Dakpanay Baboy, which are played by the representatives of each college department.

“Through this event, we gain the advantage of being prepared to compete with other universities by recognizing and enhancing the skills of my fellow students,” HATS President Ma. Prece Decena said.

Decena emphasized that the competition is a springboard for students to expand and hone their talents and abilities.

“I also learned through this event that the students are skilled not only in their areas of talent but also in cooking and fruit carving, demonstrating their [students] versatility,” Decena added.

Second-year participant

Herleene Fresco also expressed how the event benefits students, particularly the first-years.

“This event gives beginners and those that do not have prior experience the opportunity to improve and to excel,” Fresco said.

The two-day skills celebration aims to discover the students’ abilities.

Fruit carving, quiz bee, and master chef mystery box challenge marked the end of the two-day event.

The students showcased their head-to-head drink-mixing skills and expertise on the first day of the event, Nov. 16.

Certificates and monetary prizes will be awarded to the competition winners on Saturday, Nov. 19.

UNORSSGO holds K-Pop and anime convention

Expressing their passion and love for anime and K-POP, students from various levels took part in a convention with the theme ‘Mono-No-Aware Fest’ held at the University Auditorium, Nov. 17.

The program started with the parade of cosplays in which students displayed various fiction characters and after which a poster-making contest was held.

“I was ecstatic and energetic. I counted down the days until today and packed my bag the night before with everything I needed,” cosplayer from the Senior High School department Maxine Lara Gallo said.

After the array of cosplays, a K-POP random dance challenge was held with Innah Bee, an alumna of UNO-R and a known social media personality, as a special guest.

“I was so happy when they invited me for this K-POP convention. As an alumna here, it’s good to be back as

Innah Bee and [see] talented UNORians,” she shared.

Second-year Medical Technology student Kyara Louise Ababao managed to clinch the championship.

Ababao stated that she did not expect to bag the championship title or any place.

According to Ababao, it was the words of support from friends that inspired her to feel confident going into this competition.

“Getting ready for cosplay means adopting a persona. Cosplay is about dressing up as a character; it’s not about dressing up as yourself,” Ababao added.

Along with the activities were the Cosplay Competition where 10 contestants from various colleges participated, having the chance to win prizes ranging from Php 500Php 1500.

School of law joins U-Week 2022

As part of their participation in this year’s University Week Celebration, the UNO-R School of Law initiated ‘Free Legal Consultation 2022’ held at the St. Augustine Building Rooms 101104, Nov. 16-17.

Furthermore, law students were also invited to observe the

consultation ongoing as part of their activity in a course subject.

The consultation is one of the events spearheaded by the school of law that intends to give back to the UNO-Rian community.

Moreover, Turla emphasized that the ‘Free Legal Consultation’ is just one of the activities that the graduate school planned and organized as involvement in the weeklong celebration.

Down the Rabbit Hole

Clarence Aguilar College of Arts and Sciences

This is my first time participating in U-Week, and I had no idea that even while it was a lot of fun, there were times when you could tell you were exhausted from all the planning that had gone into making an activity better.

I think that U-Week 2022 could have not been more festive. There are a lot of activities and booths that cater to people with different interests. But you also see the people behind it and how hard they work to make this event possible.
