SCHOOL MISSION: Inspiring Excellence in Education, in Character and in Life.
We are now back up and running after our network upgrade last week. As we had limited access to the internet and printing last we took full advantage of the lack of technology and held a very successful reading week. It was fantastic to see so many of our students taking advantage of the activities that were running in the library and also coming dressed as their favourite literary character last Friday. A huge thank you to Mr Daniels for organising the event.
Cultural Competition
Practice is well underway for our annual Cultural Competition. This is one of our big house competitions and started in 2001. There were a couple of years during COVID that we were unable to hold the event but last year it did go ahead and it was a fabulous afternoon. I am expecting this year's event to be just as good if not better.
Winter Sports
Many of our winter sports are drawing to a close and we are very proud of the participation and the performance of our students. Many of our students have been selected to represent South Otago and we were also proud to see that a number of our students as well as one of our kaiako, Mrs Clare Healy, were also recognised at the recent Toko Rugby Club awards.
One new sport in our school has been indoor bowls and recently 10 of our students participated in the South Island Indoor Bowls Championship in both the individual and also the pairs competition. Our students participated with a lot of spirit and enthusiasm and Marcus Wills secured third place in the individual competition.

Yesterday the literacy and numeracy results from the Common Assessment Activities were released. NCEA students need to attain 10 Literacy and 10 Numeracy credits which are available by passing the Common Assessment Activities. There are two opportunities
each year to sit these assessments, one in May and the other in September. After the first of the 2024 assessment periods our Year 11 cohort are tracking very well; a large proportion of our year 11 students have now attained both their required literacy and numeracy components. In addition we also entered some Year 10 and 9 students for the most recent assessment and are so pleased to see that many of them were successful. As a school we are learning a lot about these new assessments and we are incredibly proud of all our students who sat them.
Our ball committee has been working incredibly hard to organise this year’s school formal. The formal will be on Friday 20th September and the theme this year is Hollywood/ Red Carpet. This is always a memorable evening for our students and I am sure that this year will be no different.
At the end of last term Reid was in the lead of the 2024 House Competition but there was one event that was postponed until this term. This week the house quiz, the final Term Two event, took place and Ross were victorious. This did not make a difference to the overall standings from the end of last term but it has made the competition much closer.
This term our major event will be the cultural competition, the inter house sport will be dodgeball, there will be the third round of the house quiz. As always attendance and recognitions will count towards the house point totals. The 2024 competition is still very close and any house could be the overall winner.
Our Open Evening for prospective students will be on Monday 26th August starting at 6pm in our school hall. During the evening there will be a school tour and the opportunity to talk to staff and current students. If you are unable to make the evening but would like the opportunity to come and have a look around our facilities please contact the office and we can arrange an appointment.

Every day counts towards your child’s learning at school. Attending school gives your child the best opportunity to realise their full potential and do well in life.
Is my child well enough to go to school?
We know that going to school every day is important for all students. But as a parent or caregiver, it can be difficult deciding if your child is well enough to attend school. Here is some advice to help you decide when it is okay to send your child to school, when you should keep your child at home, and when you should contact a health professional for advice. This advice is based off in-depth guidance prepared by Te Whatu Ora | Health New Zealand.
Bible Reading for the Week
‘ Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus, praising God. When all the people saw it, they also praised God.” Luke 18:42
We are excited to be running a free parent evening in Balclutha next week, 13th of August, from 5:30-7:30pm. This programme directly links into the RYDA workshop students are attending next Wednesday.
If you are teaching a young person to drive or are about to don't miss this free workshop!
We will:
• Unlock the mysteries of the teenage brain: What makes driving a challenge?
• Decode risk factors for young drivers
• Learn the art of coaching a learner driver
• Help you support the transition to solo driving
• Set a plan for collaborating with Driving Instructors And much more.
Drive Coach is a practical workshop which updates parents on latest research and road safety approaches, outlines some of the conversations our facilitators have with their children at RYDA and gives them an opportunity to ask questions and get advice from the experts.
For more information , go to https://rse.org.nz/our-programs/drivecoach/
Our Juniors are currently completing a fitness unit this term in PE. Our students are working hard to learn lots of bone and muscle names. We will then use this knowledge as we explore types of training later in the term.
Hauora is an important concept within the PE curriculum and this unit will give students practical activities around how to keep our taha tinana wall strong.
On the weekend of 27th July, we had 11 students represent our school at the South Island Secondary Schools Indoor bowls competition.
Our bowlers had been training weekly for five months leading up to this competition as well as partaking in our own school competition which saw Marcello Mapurunga Placido take the top title with Tyrese close behind.
The squad had an unbelievable tournament, with two students making the quarter finals and unfortunately were drawn to play each other. Tyrese Gemmell and Marcus Wills had a close game, with Marcus clinching the points needed to move into the Semi finals. He played some stunning bowls but unfortunately wasn't enough to seal the deal. As a school we are proud as punch with this 3rd place achievement. The pairs competition on Sunday was just as exciting. We had two pairs and one composite team entered. Dylan Carr and Jackson Savage played some excellent skip bowls, keeping us all on the edge of our seats.
We didn't make post section this year but the skill we delivered was definitely higher than the previous year. Last year we entered 5, this year 11. Bowls fever is catching! Plans are in motion for the 2025 season...watch this space.

schemes.
Congratulations to Cooper Bradley, Cash Scott, and Leon Healey for representing the Southern Region in the Year 8 rugby festival on Saturday in Balclutha. They did so well to win all three games.

Yes, it’s that time of the year again – the Cancer Society’s annual appeal.
Every day 71 New Zealanders are diagnosed with cancer.
The Cancer Society is the largest private funder of cancer research in NZ. They provide support and care services including counselling, transport, accomodation and a helpline to individuals and their families during treatment.
Milton has a great record of helping supply funds for the cause so 30th August is our chance to give to the Cancer Society.
Along with selling daffodils we will once again have a produce stall outside Supervalue.
Can you bake and donate cakes, biscuits, preserves or fresh produce?
Have you got time to help on Friday August 30th?
New volunteers are always welcome and a meeting of anyone interested in helping out will be held at 1pm on Friday 9th August at the Milton Elder Care Rooms.

Each year we appeal to the Tokomairiro Community area for support of the Genesis Newsletter and Community Notice Board. This is an opportunity for our community to show their support of the Genesis, which is dedicated to providing the Milton district with a community noticeboard and a platform for local businesses to advertise, as well as being a way for local schools and groups to share their news and events.
The prime task of the Genesis is to communicate school news and to act as a community newsletter and noticeboard. The Genesis has now been running for more than twenty five years, with similar goals now as to when it started.
The Genesis is produced weekly and comes free to every household and business in the Tokomairiro Community. The Genesis has a circulation of over 1400 households and businesses around the area. Ten students are employed to deliver this locally. Distribution beyond Milton also comes at a cost. The Genesis costs almost $50,000 per year to run, and is funded by advertising, donations, sponsorship and the high school. As the internet and social media impacts on our lives, it also impacts the running of the Genesis. We are always grateful to those local businesses, groups and individuals who continue to support us with their advertising, enabling us to produce this FREE publication each week, our major sponsors are the regular advertisers you see featured weekly, fortnightly and monthly.
The Genesis has no paid reporters. We rely on members of our community to write articles and news items. We are also grateful to all of the community clubs and groups who submit their reports and events for us to publish, often making their own donation towards the running of the publication.
You can help support the Genesis by donating using online banking. Our account details are:
Account name: Tokomairiro High School, Bank: Westpac account: 03 1736 0009803 000. Please use GENESIS DONATION as your reference.
How much to give? All contributions, from large to small, are appreciated. For example some people calculate their contribution at $1 per week and send a donation of $50. If you value the Genesis and its role in our community, then please show your support - every little bit counts!

And the winner is???? Announced later in the column. Last weekend we were jammed pack with events as President Evan celebration turning 60 and along with our Super Tipping Comp prize giving, just reinforce our standing as the No 1 entertainment venue, so if you want to book for a special event, get in quick.
Right back to the main news this week. Someone came up with an idea of a shield to celebrate winner of our Sports Tipping Comp and called it the Bert Pringle Shield which looked fantastic. The inaugural winner of this is Jason Ryan, followed by Bruce Graham and Dean Hancock 3rd. This was a very popular celebration and I've had it on very good authority it was an awesome night with great catering courtesy of Wayne.
Now I'm sure you won't be surprised to hear Private Spike has had people knocking on his door for a variety of reasons, but I've had people asking when does NPC comp start. They asked and it's been delivered, it commences this coming Friday so I'm sure most have registered from last weekend. First game is 5 30 pm on Friday so ensure your picks are in before then. Let's see who's name is engraved next. Special acknowledgement to Nick McKay for his speech on Friday outlining Private Spike’s manoeuvres which went without a hitch.
