Mrs Wish had the honour of attending the Class Act Awards last week. Established in 2001, these awards recognize two outstanding students from each school in Otago.
This year, our well-deserving recipients were Wyatt Mallon and Elsie Clarke. Both students have shown exceptional leadership, dedication to their academic studies, and a strong commitment to extracurricular activities.
Their certificates were awarded by Prime Minister Chris Luxon, and ODT editor Paul McIntyre. Olympic Gold medallist Finn Butcher spoke to the recipients about working towards his medal and using mindfulness and connections to achieve his goals. We couldn’t be prouder of them.
OSTC Prizegiving
Congratulations to Lynkon Eade, Vinnie Tawhiti and Nic Healey on receiving their qualifications at the OSTC (Otago Secondary Tertiary College) run by Otago Polytechnic last week.
Lynkon (left) gained his New Zealand Certificate in Automotive Engineering (Level 2), and Vinnie and Nic (right and far right) both completed OSTC Building and Construction (Level 3), Well done!!
Halloween Costume Competition
The question was: How scary are you? The answer on Tuesday was “We’re pretty scary!”.
There was a good turnout on the day, with some marvellous costumes from both staff and students. There were medieval plague doctors, Eddie Munster, witches, reporters named Allan, fairy princesses, zombies, mummies, scarecrows and wolf people, The Red Queen and that white rabbit! There was even a giant mushroom and a giant “scream” ghost!
Lording over it all was the Demon Librarian handing out Halloween treats and lollipops. The lucky winners were:
Students
1st Brooklyn Mair (The Plague Doctor)
2nd = Maddie Lamb and Kaitlin Burgess (The Red Queen and the White Rabbit)
3rd= Dahara Williams and Niko Coleman. (Giant Mushroom and Scream Ghost)
Staff
1st Ms J McEntyre (Eddie Munster)
2nd= Leanne Burgess (Scary Scarecrow) and Sharlene Goodwin (A werewolf)
Tokomairiro High School HORT SHOP
Honourable mentions: Ruby Barnett (the Mummy) Dakota Coleman (Allan) and Kyra and Bridgett Stephen (Fairy princesses!) Nirvana and Payton
The standard of costumes was very high, and they really showed off the staff and students’ creative skills! A big thank you to everyone who entered.

Tokomairiro High School Newsletter...
SCHOOL MISSION: Inspiring Excellence in Education, in Character and in Life.
Last week marked the final week for our Year 13 students. It’s always a bittersweet moment as we gather for the senior assembly, reflecting on their journeys through Tokomairiro High School. When I first arrived here, our current Year 13s were in Year 8. Watching them grow into the remarkable young adults they’ve become has been a real privilege. I know they have bright futures ahead, and we wish them every success in their exams and beyond.
"Poipoia te kākano, kia puāwai" Nurture the seed, and it will blossom.
House Competition Update
At the end of Term 3, our House Competition standings were incredibly close. Reid House held a narrow lead over Ayson, while Ross edged out Malcolm for third place. As we head into the final term, there are still plenty of points up for grabs, with table tennis kicking off our last inter-house sports competition. Additionally, students will earn house points for attendance and class effort, so there’s still everything to play for!
Building Upgrades
Exciting news next week, we’ll begin our long-awaited building upgrades. By the start of the next school year, we will have replaced the roof on B Block, upgraded wiring and plumbing in the science labs, installed new windows in the labs, and recarpeted the library and most of C Block. While we anticipate some end-of-year disruptions, we’re looking forward to the improvements these changes will bring.

For several years, we’ve provided Chromebooks for all our students, but moving forward, we’ll shift to a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) system in 2025. Year 7 and 8 students will continue to have access to Chromebooks during the school day. For older students, we recommend bringing their own devices. Details on suitable devices and the BYOD agreement form are available on our website and at the school office. Our preferred supplier, Noel Leeming, has a selection of approved devices, and they’ll be offering special deals for Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
Cellphone Policy Reminder
A quick reminder that our cellphone-free policy, introduced at the start of Term 2, remains in place. Students are expected to keep their phones away during the school day, including lunch breaks. Caregivers can still reach them through the office if needed. This policy also applies to senior students on campus for study or exams.

On Friday we held our NPC Tipping Comp prize giving where we had five tied for 3rd Jock, Bruce Graham, Ivan, Kieran Calteaux and Lammy. Just ahead of them bouncing back from a disaster of a joker round was Snow Cowie in 2nd. But the winner was someone who didn't buckle under intense pressure and lead from the start was, drum roll please THE GLOPPER!!! Who reigned supreme and was stoked to have his name added to the Bert Pringle shield. Huge thanks to Nick McKay who did a sterling job of marking the scores and Donna Williams who kept everything in order. So there was a fantastic night with Hangi and no more stressed entrants for a few months.
Also struck was the Pick the Score jackpot by Debby who nailed the correct score and took home a sizable amount. It starts again this week with ABs vs Ireland with a breakfast being put on Saturday 8am so best way to start the day with footy and a big feed. See you there.
Also we are getting heaps of entrants for our Classic Spud Dig comp so if you haven't grabbed your Spud, you better be quick as not many left.
With Santa Claus getting warmed up with Christmas just around the corner, our Xmas Ham raffles are in full stride, so make sure you get your tickets as they are quickly snapped up.

Two $1000 Hato Hone St John scholarships for prospective new healthcare workers in Milton.
Hato Hone St John is offering two $1000 scholarships to Milton residents and students who are looking to take up a career in healthcare.
Funded by donations from the local community, the two scholarships offered by the Milton Area Committee are to help residents and students who wish to study a healthcare-related course or degree at a time when communities struggle with the cost of living, and the country suffers a growing shortage of doctors, and nurses across multiple disciplines.
Hato Hone St John Milton Area Committee Chairperson, Marie Smith says it is important that local fundraising is used to give back to our local residents and students.
“Otago University and Otago Polytech are a stone’s throw from Milton. A large portion of our local high school students typically study some form of health-related study there.
“After tremendous local fundraising, we wanted to give back to the local Milton-Bruce District, and to support the healthcare industry nationwide.”
Applications can be submitted from Monday 4th November until Sunday 1st December 2024, with successful recipients being notified by Friday 6th December. The minimum age for applicants is 16 years old.
