Boiler Replacement Progress Update

On Monday, 20th May, the old coal-fired boilers were finally removed to make way for the new wood chip boilers. This has been a long, drawn-out process that started at the end of winter 2021 when the Ministry of Education informed the school that the government had decided to scrap all coal boilers in schools due to carbon emissions. After much discussion over the next two years about heat pumps, wood pellets, wood chips, and solar power, a decision was made on behalf of the school to install wood pellet boilers and bring the pellets by truck from Christchurch. After the impracticality of transporting wood pellets f Christchurch on a diesel fuel truck (approximately 450km) when there is a wood chip manufacturing plant 2km down the road, it was eventually agreed to install two wood chip-fuelled boilers.
The original time frame for the removal of the coal boilers and installation of the wood chip boilers was to see the project completed by the end of March before the start of Term 2. Delays occurred, however, due to resource consents and an incomplete asbestos report.
With little progress made, it was decided at the end of March to install a temporary diesel-fired boiler. This boiler has been unreliable, often failing to operate on Mondays and cold, frosty mornings, leaving classrooms cold. Hopefully, now with all delays and issues resolved, it will be full steam ahead for the next eight weeks. Modifications to the boiler house for the installation of the new boilers mean they should be operational by August. Let’s hope the diesel boiler functions reliably in the interim, and we will address carbon emissions later.

Part of the old coal boiler is removed by crane in late May.

Uniform Reminder
Now that we are starting to feel the effects of winter weather, it is time to remind students of the uniform requirements. Softshell jackets are still able to be worn, or the new longer, waterproof jacket which is available from NZ Uniforms. Thermal tops are able to be worn under the polo tee shirts or checked shirts. These are to be black or navy. Hoodies and other non–uniform items are not acceptable. Students wearing skirts are allowed to wear navy stockings. There are some items of second hand uniform and new uniform pieces available at the school office, or you can join the Tokomairiro High Second Hand uniform page on Facebook by going to https://www.facebook.com/groups/1056602061990214. For any questions about uniform, please talk to your child’s dean.

SCHOOL MISSION: Inspiring Excellence in Education, in Character and in Life.
As we head into the latter half of the term we are experiencing cold mornings more frequently. There are plenty of warm uniform options available and students are able to wear thermals under their uniform.
Cross Country
Last week ten of our students competed in the Otago/ Southland Cross Country Relay. Our students performed very well. The senior boys placed 4th in their section and 5th overall. The girls placed 10th but gave it their all. The mixed team raced but unfortunately couldn't place due to one of the girls pulling out but did very well. It was an outstanding effort from all our students.
End of Semester One
The end of the first semester will be at the end of this term. All our year 9 and 10 students will be finishing their current courses as well as many of our senior students at this time. It is very important that students look at their subject choices for next semester and make any changes that they want or need to make before the end of the term. For our year 13 students it is a good opportunity to look into the entry requirements for tertiary courses and ensure that they are taking courses that allow them the opportunity to achieve the entry requirements.
Blue Mountain Sports Exchange
It has been a couple of years since we have had a sports Exchange with Blue Mountain College but this will be taking
place on Tuesday 25th June at Blue Mountain College. Our students are really looking forward to the day.
Emergency Information
Last week we carried out our Lockdown Drill, we are required to do this annually. This is the procedure that we have put in place if we are ever in the situation that we need to keep our students safely inside our buildings. Our students were all great during this practice and followed the instructions from staff impeccably. I am hopeful that we will never have to implement this for real but if we do I am confident that all our students do know exactly what they need to do.
Winter Illness
Knowing if a child is well enough to be at school Health New Zealand can often be a difficult decision to make. While we want all our students to be at school everyday, we do know that there are times when a student is too ill to attend. To help with this decision Te Whatu ora has released guidance for parents and school leaders on when it is okay for a child to still be at school and when an unwell child should be at home. The information is available on the Te Whatu Ora - Health New Zealand website; it can be found on the Childhood Illnesses page and covers a range of illnesses. If your child is too ill to attend school we do ask that you contact the school everyday of the illness

Toko Rugby Report
Last Saturday was one of the biggest days at Toko Rugby Club as we proudly hosted the 2024 Topp Cup matches. Thankfully the day dawned fine and calm for the majority of the day with a bit of wind and rain later in the afternoon.
In front of the biggest crowd seen at Toko for years Southern Region retained the highly sought after Topp Cup with a convincing 24 12 victory with Jared Hayes being a shining light. In the curtain raiser Southern Region won comfortably 51 19 with Toko's Lockie Finch and Dejay Kane putting in starring roles.
Toko clearly is the best place to host these types of matches in terms of grounds, facilities and importantly able to provide parking for what seemed like hundreds of vehicles. Well done to the Toko Committee who organised an outstanding day with smooth operation. Special mention to the Toko Junior ball boys who showed what a special club we have.
This week Toko Premiers are off to Lawrence in a must win match. Unfortunately Toko have a few walking wounded with at least 2 leaders injured for the rest of the season. My spies tell me Liam Gibson has been called up so he's looking to make an impact.
