On Tuesday, 25th,June 80 students plus staff and supporters travelled to Tapanui for the annual Blue Mountain Exchange. We left Milton in rain but Tapanui was cool and clear for a day of rugby, netball, basketball, golf and chess. There were some close contests but Blue Mountain came out the winner of the exchange. The students enjoyed the exchange as it was unable to be held last year and Blue Mountain College were great hosts. Thanks to Brendon Potae, Joe Herbert, Craig Lister and Jeremy Coleman for help with the rugby teams, the staff that attended and the many parents who came along to support.
Student Attendance
Every day counts towards your child’s learning at school. Attending school gives your child the best opportunity to realise their full potential and do well in life.
Is my child well enough to go to school?
We know that going to school every day is important for all students. But as a parent or caregiver, it can be difficult deciding if your child is well enough to attend school. My child has mild symptoms that are unlikely to be infectious. Should they attend school?
If your child tests negative for COVID-19 and they do not have any of the symptoms of concern outlined below, there are some mild symptoms that could be caused by a condition or reaction rather than an infectious illness that mean it is okay for your child to still be at school. Examples include a happy energised child who has mild respiratory symptoms (cough, headache or runny nose) with no fever, their usual hay fever and allergy symptoms (sneezing, stuffy nose or an itchy face), or skin problems that are not infectious, such as eczema or insect bites. If your child has any of these mild symptoms but is well enough to go to school, support them to go and let their teacher know.

SCHOOL MISSION: Inspiring Excellence in Education, in Character and in Life.
We are now in the last week of the term which also means it is the end of the first semester for our Year 9 and 10 students as well as many of the seniors. Our students have worked incredibly hard throughout the term and should be looking forward to a well earned break from school. At the end of last week mid year reports were emailed out to caregivers, if you did not receive your child’s report or you have any questions then please let us know.
I would also like to acknowledge Mrs Darlene Adams who has stepped down from our School Board. Darlene has been a representative of the Board for five years and the past two years she has been the Presiding Member. Darlene has provided a lot of support and wisdom to our school community over her time on the board and we are very grateful for the time and energy that she gave this vitally important role.
Mr Joe Herbert was elected as Presiding Member at the Board Meeting last week. Joe brings a huge amount of experience to the role and I look forward to working with him moving forward.
Matariki
Last week we joined the nation by celebrating Matariki. Our week started with a fabulous performance by our Kapa Haka group in assembly. Then on Wednesday Whaea Clare Healey along with a number of students from our Te Reo classes organised a lunchtime of fun activities for the whole kura which included a photo booth, Matariki themed games and lantern making. It was awesome to see so many of our students participating in the event and learning a little bit about the meaning of Matariki.
Boiler Update
Yesterday was a very exciting day for us at school as we saw the arrival of our new boiler. All term we have been wrestling with a temporary boiler as the old coal boiler was decommissioned and removed in preparation for a more environmentally friendly option. So while the new boiler is on site and has been lifted into place there is still a significant amount of work to be carried out before it is working but we are hopeful that the new boiler will be up and running in early August.

Blue Mountain Sports Exchange
Last Tuesday over 80 of our students travelled to Tapanui to take part in the Blue Mountain Sports Exchange. While this is usually an annual event last year it didn’t take place so our students were very excited about the day.

The students competed in Netball, Rugby, Basketball Golf and Chess. We won the Chess and Senior Basketball and narrowly lost much of the Netball and Rugby.
Despite not bringing home the trophy our students had a fabulous day especially our senior rugby team who don’t get to play as a team during the season.
A huge thank you to Rebecca Mallon our Sports Coordinator for organising the day as well as all the teaching staff who accompanied the students and refereed games during the day.

News from the Trenches...
It can't be July already??? There is that much
On Saturday a crew went to Geraldine for a tour of Roger Mahan's Heritage Centre which by all accounts was a fantastic day and thoroughly enjoyed by all who ventured out. Apparently there was a bit of discussion over the Equator however Norm MacLeod clarified everything whether it was horizontal or vertical!!!
Our Sports Tipping Comp is rapidly approaching the conclusion with plenty of candidates starting to puff out their chests by claiming they have picks all right so all will be revealed on Friday 2 August. This will be one of the biggest nights this year as there will be a RSA version of a hangi free on the night. But more importantly, there will be very special presentation on this night, you will NOT want to miss this. Those that are participating, make sure you have your picks entered by 7pm Friday night.
This coming Saturday night we will be showing AB test vs England with our Corporate Box being very popular. Just reinforce our standing as the No 1 social venue in South Otago. Make sure you have entered the Pick The Score for AB test match.
I've run out of space for the rest of the news, so you better come to RSA to find out. Private Spike Pike

Toko Rugby Report
On Saturday Toko Premiers travelled to Kaitangata to take on competition heavyweight Crescent for the highly sought after Eddie Scott Memorial Trophy. Toko offered up a further patched up squad but were nonetheless determined to cause an upset by taking home the trophy to its rightful place.
As title favourites, Crescent came out to strongly dominate and went out to a strong 29-0 halftime lead. Toko had their moments of ascendancy but unfortunate turnovers let Crescent off the hook and they made Toko pay. Crescent kept their foot on the throat by running out convincing winners 60-14 but Toko displayed typical resilience with late tries to Troy Calteaux and TK Kershaw.
For Toko, Harry Greer continues his role of King of the Greer's with his continued top class effort along with Levin Coulter-Butler who recently has returned but lost nothing of his hardness. Tamati Orupe and TK Kershaw had strong efforts off the bench.
Next week Toko Premiers take on Clinton early at 1pm due to AB test in Dunedin so this is a must win for the final round robin match to end this trying season on a positive response. Get along and show the boys the support.
