Cataloguing War Graves

Last Thursday afternoon members of our SPEC class, as well as our Senior History class, traveled with Mr McClure and Mr Trevathan to Fairfax Cemetery for the purposes of cataloguing war graves there.

Mr Trevathan works closely with the New Zealand Remembrance Army, a nationwide volunteer network committed to remembering people who served and to the restoration of all graves and memorials of those people. We will be working with Mr Trevathan to locate, record and clean where necessary.

Ultimately, in future, we hope to be able to produce a resource that visitors to the area can use to locate the resting places of loved ones and ancestors.

Indoor Bowls Success

A massive congratulations to our students who represented Tokomairiro High SAchool at the South Island Indoor Bowls Championships over the weekend. All five played brilliantly, with special recognition to:

Addie Johnston – Winner of the Plate Section

Jackson Savage – Third Place

Tyrese Gemmell – Overall Champion

What an outstanding achievement – we are incredibly proud of you all.

Ball Dress Swap

It’s that time of year - Ball Season is upon us!

Things kick off this week with our Ball Dress Swap, an initiative that was first introduced last year and proved to be a real success. It’s a great way to promote sustainability and help make the ball more accessible for everyone.

If you have a dress, suit or pair of shoes tucked away that you no longer need, we’d love your donation. It’s a simple gesture that could make a big difference to one of our students.

*Tickets for the school ball are now on sale, and all payments must be made by Friday 15th August.

The excitement is well and truly building!

Tokomairiro High School Newsletter...

SCHOOL MISSION: Inspiring Excellence in Education, in Character and in Life.

Term 3 is well underway, and there’s plenty happening across the school this week. One of the big events is the Blue Mountain Sports Exchange, which we’re proud to be hosting this year. Over a third of our students will be taking part and we know they’ll represent Tokomairiro with determination and pride. Meanwhile, for those not involved, normal classes continue as usual.

It’s also the week where ball preparations really begin to take shape, with the return of our popular ball dress swap. Also at the end of the week, we look forward to the arrival of four visiting students from Japan, coming from the school our students visited in Tokyo earlier this year. It’s a busy but exciting time.

Board Elections

Being on the School Board is one of the most valuable ways you can support the education and wellbeing of our students. Parent representatives play a key role in guiding the strategic direction of the school and ensuring our kura continues to thrive. Nominations close at 12 noon on Wednesday 6 August, and we encourage whānau to consider putting themselves forward. If you care about the future of Tokomairiro High School and want to be part of shaping it, this is a great opportunity. Nomination forms have been emailed out to all eligible caregivers. If you need another copy or would like help with the process, please don’t hesitate to contact the school office.

Year 7 to 10 Testing

Last week, all our Year 7 to 10 students took part in school-wide literacy and numeracy testing. We’re thrilled to report some outstanding progress, especially in reading and numeracy. It’s encouraging to see the hard work of our students and teachers paying off. The next round of Common Assessment Activities (CAAs) will take place in the first week of September. Students will be notified by their English and Maths teachers if they will be sitting them.

Parent Teacher Interviews

Our mid-year parent–teacher interviews will take place on Tuesday 5 August. These meetings are a valuable chance to catch up with subject teachers and talk through how your child is progressing. Bookings can be made by scanning the QR code or follow this link https://www.schoolinterviews.co.nz/code/zmv7e. We encourage all whānau to make the most of this opportunity.

Mufti Day

This Friday we will be having a mufti day. But instead of a gold coin donation we are asking students to bring an item of non-perishable food. The food will be donated to the Milton Food Bank Midwinter Appeal.

Welcome to Our Tokyo Visitors

We are very much looking forward to welcoming four visiting students from Japan who arrive in Otago this Friday. They’re coming from the school that our own students visited during the Tokyo trip earlier this year, and it’s a real pleasure to be able to return the hospitality they showed us.

News from the Trenches...

First up this week, I'd like to acknowledge the sad passing of Big Chis who passed away last week. Brian was a larger than life character who loved sports, primarily rugby and cricket and always loved to have a debate on either subject over a beer.

Another of Milton's personalities departed. Time for you to give Patti a cuddle, RIP Chis

It seems like a smooth transition to announce our World Famous NPC Comp starts on THURSDAY, so make sure you have entered and get amongst the banter. Talking to a few so called experts they are chomping at the bit to get stuck in.

Nick McKay has stepped away from scoring this Comp after many years, so thanks for your efforts. I understand person taking on this role won't be listening to any frivolous complaints. So let's get it on and see who comes out on top. Entry forms have been there since Sunday.

Also upcoming on Sunday 19 August we are having a breakfast to watch AB vs Argentina test match so put your name down to enjoy this delicious banquet.

Daffodil Day Appeal

Join us for the Cancer Society's Annual Appeal. 1 in 3 New Zealanders will be affected by cancer in their lifetime. As the largest private funder of cancer research in New Zealand, the Cancer Society also offers crucial services like patient care, counselling, transportation, accommodation, and a helpline for families during treatment.

Milton has a proud tradition of supporting this cause. On the 29th of August, let's continue that legacy. Besides raffle tickets and daffodil sales, we'll have a produce stall outside Milton Super Value.

Also I haven't been able to make Thursday night raffles for a

Can you bake or donate? Fresh produce, cakes, biscuits, and preserves are all welcome. We need new volunteers too! Please join us for a meeting at 1:30 pm on Wednesday, the 6th of August, at the Milton Elder Care rooms."

Milton Sub Assn Indoor Bowls

The last night of the Second Round Cup was played last week with Glenledi soundless beating Moneymore 6-2 and aggregate score of 49-23.

At the weekend South Otago hosted the Triangular against Southland and Central Otago. Going into the final round South Otago were ahead by two points when disaster happened and they only managed 9 points and Southland 20, allowing Southland to win the Trophy with 91.5 points to South Otago’s 82.5. Central Otago had 42. Local lads Peter Grant and Alastair Allison were part of the South Otago team.

Milton have their champion singles this week and next Saturday is the island test between the North and South at Balclutha. Make it a day to remember, come along and watch the South Island (hopefully) win. There will be three sessions with Jane Wintringham, Hannah Botting and Alanna Moffit and reserve Robert Wilson all from South Otago part of the team.
