Mana Pounamu Awards

On Friday, two of our tauira were honoured as recipients of Mana Pounamu 2025 Awards. This year marked the 25th anniversary of the Mana Pounamu Young Achievers Awards and they acknowledge academic achievement, strong leadership, cultural integrity, and a deep commitment to te ao Māori.

A huge congratulations to our incredible recipients this year: Saffron Healey (left) and Nirvana Collins (right), and a mihi to the students who supported our recipients with a haka tautoko. They carry the aspirations of their whānau, hapū, and iwi with pride.

The rōpū who stood alongside our recipients reflected their strength and mana. Their presence and support is just another demonstration of the power of kotahitanga and whakawhanaungatanga that makes Tokomairiro High School such a special place.

Term 3 Begins

Tokomairiro High School Newsletter...

SCHOOL MISSION: Inspiring Excellence in Education, in Character and in Life.

It’s hard to believe we’ve reached the end of another term already. Winter has certainly arrived, and while we’ve seen a few more sniffles and absences creeping in, overall, our attendance has stayed strong a great reflection of how committed our students and families are to showing up and giving their best.

This term has been a full one. There’s been something on almost every week from Pink Shirt Day and Turbo Touch to Cross Country and our always-incredible Cultural Competition.

We also held the first of our two sports exchanges for the year a chance for students to challenge themselves, represent our school with pride, and build friendships with students from other schools. It’s been great to see students getting involved, supporting each other, and showing real pride in our school and their houses. Toko’s Got Talent also took place this term, with students sharing musical performances and dance. I wasn’t able to be there myself, but I’ve heard wonderful things about the energy and talent on display celebration of student creativity and confidence.

Alongside the fun, there’s been plenty of meaningful learning happening. Over half of our senior students were trained in CPR and how to use an AED a life skill we hope they never need, but one that could genuinely save lives. A number of students volunteered their time to collect for St John, and our Tetra Pak recycling efforts have kept going strong thanks to student leadership and consistency.

Inside classrooms, students have been sitting the first of this year’s Common Assessment Activities, and our reading data is in things are tracking really well. There have also been a number of group and class trips, all of which add richness and relevance to the work we do here at school. And, as I write this, our first group of students has touched down in Tokyo the start of an unforgettable experience that will no doubt shape their view of the world.

We were also proud to end the term by celebrating two of our outstanding Māori learners through the Mana Pounamu Awards. This year, the recipients were Saffron Healey and Nirvana Collins. These awards recognise leadership, perseverance, and excellence and both students are thoroughly deserving.

Guess Who's Moo-ved In?

The VetSouth team is growing in leaps and cows, with a brand new clinic now open in Milton!

This brings our family of clinics to nine across Southland and South Otago, expanding our reach in the South and making it even easier for local farmers to access trusted veterinary care.

The Milton bricks and mortar might be new on the map, but we’ve got years of gumboots-on-the-ground experience. Whether it’s an on-farm client call out or a quick dash in for production animal supplies, practical advice for improving herd health, or a friendly yarn that brightens your day – we’re here to help.

It’s not our biggest clinic, but don’t let the smaller size fool you. It’s packed with all the gear and know-how you’d expect from the VetSouth name. From restricted veterinary medicines to animal health essentials and nutritional supplements, our Milton clinic can be your new local go-to for everything dairy, sheep, beef, and deer.

So why not drop by and say hello when you’re in town next. Friendly Milton local, and our new customer services rep Gina looks forward to welcoming you! We’re excited to be part of the community and we’re looking forward to working with you.

Find us at 113 Union Street, Milton - with plenty of parking out the back!

Open Monday – Friday, 9am-2.30pm. Phone: 03 228 1058.

Toko Rugby Report

Gurgle gurgle gurgle!!! That was the sound made after battling West Taieri in an important match at home on Saturday in atrocious weather conditions. This would have been the first time in a decade that I saw surface water on the field and all players needed water wings and snorkel to survive.

Toko opened the scoring with a penalty before West Taieri impressive forward pack and first five punting denied Toko possession and kept the pressure on. West Taieri used lineout drive efficiently and held a handy 18-3 halftime lead. Their dominance continued in the second half as they held a impressive 30 - 3 lead.

Toko could have given up based on the conditions but this Axemen team is built on grit and determination. As a reward for their efforts they scored two late tries to Bargy and Brodie Ferguson to make full-time score a respectable 30 - 17 to West Taieri.

Next week is the last round robin match vs Evil Empire Clutha away before the semi final. This will be a difficult assignment but Toko continues to defy the odds and will put in a huge effort.

News from the Trenches...

This column opens on a sombre note as we had a Memorial service for Cav who recently passed away. A good crowd shared the memories and fun times. RIP Cav.

Last Friday night we held our Sports Comp vs Fire Brigade with numerous sports involved. This was an awesome fun time with plenty of laughs and was thoroughly enjoyed by both teams. The Fire Brigade managed to gain victory to look after the Trophy for 12 months. There was the odd moment of controversy over the pool table along with a member of the RSA team being given education on proper Quoits techniques, supposedly they were told to copy what she did to her husband. Well done Fire Brigade on hosting RSA.

This coming Saturday is the biggest revelation as our Super Rugby comp winners are revealed. Celebrations commence at 6pm before AB vs France test. Winners will be announced at halftime. There will be a massive hangi to eat and the annual Pick The Scores will also be available. This is always one of the highlights of the social year.

Not long until our next competition commences with our favourite NPC comp starts. I'm considering combining the Super Rugby and NPC comp for 2026. If you have an opinion on this, talk to Woody about it.

Congratulations to Keith Gillies who is the latest winner of our weekly Membership winner. This just keeps getting struck due to the large crowd on a Thursday night raffle.
