Tokomairiro High School Newsletter & Community Noticeboard
Wednesday 2nd April 2025
Last Tuesday all of Year 7 & 8 went on a overnight leadership camp in Waihola. On the first day we rotated around different activities; air rifle shooting, ziplining, mountain boards, disc golf and archery tag. These were lots of new experiences for of us. After tea we went on the 80m long water slide which was freezing but fun. We ended the night with a few rounds of spot
Day two we went to the Taieri Historic museum in Outram. We completed a scavenger hunt through the different buildings and also looked at the Vintage Machinery. We finished this day off with lunch and a swim at the Outram River. We were very lucky
We all had a great time and wish it could have been for longer!
The Milton Lions Club have been long supporters of our school and for many years our students have participated in the collections for the Puppy and low Vision appeals. Sadly these collections have been stopped but yesterday in assembly we were honoured to be presented with a certificate of appreciation for our support over the many years the appeal occurred.
As you may have seen we are on the move. We have outgrown our current shop and are moving 100m down the road to 44 Union street (previously the Must Hang cafe).
Our first day open at the new shop will be April 7th and we'd love to see you all there on opening day.
We also had a special performance in assembly. Sioeli Pulu performed a traditional Tonga tau’olunga which is a Tongan dance. The whole kura thought his performance was fabulous to watch and are very grateful for him sharing
We would like to thank our current landlord Steve for having us and all the support he has given us.
We would also like to extend a big thank you to the community for helping get us to this position and supporting us over the years.
You'll still see the same smiling team and great prices. So come on down April 7th and grab yourself a bargain.

Please email these to genesis@tokohigh.school.nz so we can share what is happening in our area.
Last week, our Year 7 and 8 students had an unforgettable experience at camp. A video showcasing their adventures was shared at our recent assembly and it was fantastic to see their enthusiasm and teamwork in action. The staff who led the camp have commented on how amazing all our students were and how much they pushed themselves to try new things and be involved. A massive thank you to Mrs Erica Milligan, Ms Natasha Freeman and Ms Sophie Giggins-Brown for their organisation along with all the parents who went to help.
Many of you will know that our artificial turf was damaged beyond repair last year after being lifted by strong winds. Unfortunately, the underlay had shrunk, making it impossible to reinstall.
We have received quotes for a new turf with a 25-year lifespan, but it comes at a significant cost. Right now, we don’t have the funds to cover the full cost, so we will need to fundraise.
This turf has been a hugely valuable facility for both our students and the wider community, and we’re committed to replacing it. If you or someone you know would like to help bring this vision to life, please reach out to us we’d love to hear from you.
As the mornings get cooler, now is a good time to check that students have the right warm uniform options.
Approved jackets: Soft shell, Code sideline jacket (NZ Uniforms), or a plain black or navy jacket
KidsCan jackets: Available for those who need them just let us know
Navy vest, merino jersey, Back Road jersey or older style woollen school jersey (available through PTA for $20)
Hoodies are not part of the uniform and won’t be permitted at school.
If you have any short-term uniform concerns, please get in touch we’re happy to help.

The new library, service centre, and swimming pool facility will not only enhance the town’s appearance but also provide the district with year-round opportunities for recreation, learning, and connection. This project, which has strong community backing, is set create lasting benefits for residents and visitors. However, we still need your help to reach the $2 million fundraising target set by the Bruce Community Facilities Trust (BCFT).
An incredibly easy way to support the project is through a regular, scheduled donation, such as a “set and forget” debit. By setting up a recurring donation, you can help fund this vital community resource in a way that is manageable and sustainable. Whether it's $10 a month or $50, every little bit adds up. Direct debit donations are an easy and automated way to contribute, allowing you to spread out your support without having to commit a large sum upfront. Another simple option Payroll Giving. Payroll Giving is set up via your employer and comes directly from your paycheck. It’s simple, secure, and tax-deductible. You can contribute to this awesome project without even having to think about it! Even small contributions can make a big difference. Every dollar counts towards creating a space that will benefit the entire community, from recreation to learning opportunities, social activities, and health and wellness. If your workplace doesn’t currently offer Payroll Giving, consider approaching them about the possibility. It’s a great way for businesses to show their support for local development. Together, we can make Milton’s future brighter for generations to come. A pledge form and further info will be mailed out soon.
“I lift up my eyes to the mountains where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.” - Psalms 121:1-2
Years 7 and 8:
Social Studies is a compulsory subject in New Zealand from years 1-10. In year 7 and 8 at Tokomairiro High School it is integrated as part of the Homeroom programme taught by Mrs Milligan, Ms Giggins-Brown and Ms Freeman.
Their curriculum is designed to support ākonga to learn how our histories help shape our lives. This involves exploring local stories about Milton’s past, as well as national and international stories like our ANZAC experience.
Every Tokomairiro High School student is required to undertake at least one semester of learning in Social Studies in year 9 and / or 10. From travelling to learn about how data from local cemeteries can provide insights into local history and social trends, to investigating perspectives on the Dawn Raids that occurred in New Zealand in the 1970’s, Ms Leonard offers dynamic and engaging experiences to her classes.
Applications are now open for the year for the Bruce Stewart Leadership Programme grant. The programme is now open to receiving applications year-round.
Over the last few years, we have supported a number of emerging leaders in the Tokomairiro region in attending courses such as Outward Bound, Spirit of Adventure and Future Leaders Academy, Pacific Islands. However, leadership takes many forms, and we welcome and carefully consider all applications.
It's a privilege to carry on my grandfather’s legacy and support our region's next generation of leaders.
For more information about applying, visit our website: www.brucestewartleadership.org.
I look forward to being able to assist more Tokomairiro locals work towards their leadership goals in 2025.

On Saturday in sizzling hot temperatures, Toko travelled to Valley for first round match. This was due to Clinton being unable to field a team this year and the draw has subsequently been revised.
Toko opened the scoring through Dion Shaw after a spectacular break by McLeod Glaister. It was followed up by Ethan Harrex storming over for Toko to take a handy 14-7 halftime lead.
Toko put the accelerator down in the early part of the second half through tries to Toby Greene and Dylan Greer. Another individual brilliant try to McLeod Glaister meant Toko had a dominant 31-14 lead with 20 minutes left. Toko withstood the Valley comeback to register their first win 31- 26 at full time.
For Toko, Ethan Harrex and McLeod Glaister had outstanding games along with rest of the forward pack that constantly put pressure on their opponents. In the backs Toby Greene and Deejay Kane were a constant thorn for Valley to cope with.
Next week Toko take on Lawrence in home in the first home competition match. Make sure you are there to support the boys as they are looking to play an exciting brand of footy.

Another great turnout on Wednesday night saw Barbara Read, Raymond Perry and David Cook come out the winners with three wins, and Ray Low, Alwyn Read and Bruce Dobson runners up with two wins.
Round 1; B. Read 6, Alistair Allison, Elizabeth Read, Sharon White 4, R. Low 8, Peter Grant, Donna Richards 5. Round 2; B. Read 6, R. Low 5. A. Allison 7, P. Grant 4. Round 3; B. Read 5, A. Allison 3. R. Low 4, P. Grant 3. The Milton season opens on Tuesday 15th April at 7.30pm at the Milton Bowling Club. See you all there!
On Saturday we hosted the Patriots Motor Cycle Club who do an amazing job raising money for Veterans charities around NZ. This was an impressive sight of around 70 awesome bikes which thundered into town. They generously donated $1000 to the Milton RSA Welfare Fund and this was gratefully received...thank you.
Also on Saturday and reinforcing our venue as the premium social venue, we hosted the Toko Premiers. The Big River Country women's rugby team had heard about the fantastic atmosphere so called into see what the fuss was about. Both teams enjoyed themselves and are a credit to their clubs.
Don't forget we have our annual Poppy Day on 11th April so we encourage all to come along as you will see our great volunteers throughout Milton.
Our Tipping Comp is getting to a very tricky stage where the points will be covered up and thus increases the tension among the front runners. Also gives an opportunity for those behind to make a move. There is a lot of anxiety among the leaders.
Finally we still have our Easter raffles which are being sold quickly along with our Thursday night meat raffles which have never been sold as quickly as last fortnight. I've taken a poll and it's been determined our new sellers have proven very very popular amongst our members. So without being crass, it would appear sex sells!!!!
