SCHOOL MISSION: Inspiring Excellence in Education, in Character and in Life.
Last week saw the end of what has been a very busy term for us. We started the term with a hugely successful Cultural Competition and the rest of the term did not slow down. We saw our Netball Team go to Tournament week, Year 9 and 10 students went to camp, the School Formal was fabulous, our Year 11 students completed many of the new look NCEA assessments along with a host of other events. Our staff and students should all be very proud of all their hard mahi during the term and I hope that they are all enjoying the start of a well earned break from school.
Te Wiki o te Reo Māori
Last week was Te Wiki o te Reo Māori at Tokomairiro High School. A huge thank you to the students in the Te Ao Māori and Te Reo Māori classes and to whaea Clare Healey for organising the events that took place during the week. It was great to see so many ākonga and kaiako embracing the spirit of the week.
Kia kaha te kōrero Māori.

It was also great the Year 6 students from Milton Primary School participating alongside our students.
A huge thank you for the Maths department for organising such a wonderful event!

Lake to Sea Ride
We are once again very fortunate to be the beneficiary of the 2024 Lake to Sea Trail Bike Ride. The proceeds from this event are used by our PTA to help support all our ākonga both inside and outside of the classroom.
This year the ride will take place on Saturday 19th October. If you are able to help out on the day and have not returned the form that was given to students please can you return the form as soon as possible.
In addition we ask that every family supports the bike ride by donating a bag of small chocolate bars and a box of muesli bars. These need to be dropped off at the school office and we ask that donations are named so they can be ticked off.
Nathan Wallis
We are very excited to announce that Neuroscience Educator and former student Nathan Wallis will be presenting his talk ‘The Developing Brain’ on Wednesday 16th October in our school hall. This talk focuses on giving a quick
snapshot of brain development. During the presentation, Nathan will guide the audience through the stages of brain development from childhood to adulthood. He will reveal little tricks to make parenting easier, and help you open up communication with your child in a way that actually encourages them to listen, develop and grow.
Tickets can be booked by following this link: https:// www.eventfinda.co.nz/2024/nathan-wallis-the-developingbrain-milton/milton

2025 Junior Course Selection
Senior course selection has now been closed and we will be turning our attention to course selection for Years 9 and 10 at the start of Term 4. All our Year 9 and 10 students follow a programme called Ara Tokomairiro. This allows students to create a bespoke timetable that suits their passions and aspirations while maintaining a strong focus on Literacy and Numeracy. The Ara Tokomairiro booklets will be handed out to students early next term. It is important that students and caregivers read the course information that is in the booklets carefully and if there are any questions please do not hesitate to contact us.
Enrolments for 2025
We are now welcoming enrolments for 2025 for students who will be in Years 7 to 13. Enrolment packs are available at the school office and enrolment interviews can also be booked through the school office

Year 9 and 10 Camp
Recently the Year 9’s and 10’s attended camp at Tautuku. Each year group had three days at camp with a cross over day on the Wednesday.
Bible Reading for the Week ‘There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love’. We love because he first loved us
Year 9’s went down on the Monday and participated in activities involving the Nature Walk out to the beach, building bivy’s, Flying Fox, initiative course, walks and the bouldering wall. One group got the tyre off the 10 foot high pole to leave as a test for the Year 10’s. A newspaper fashion show was the highlight on Monday night. When we weren’t able to get outside the fire kept us warm and able to participate in inside activities. Wednesday dawned much brighter for everyone to do Abseiling and compass work.
The Year 10’s joined us at morning tea with a welcome. For both groups spotlight and the night line were a hit. Thursday saw half the group go kayaking and the other half at the Tahakopa Estuary discovering shells at the beach. We all met up for lunch and did the initiatives which included being able to get the tyre back on the 10 foot pole. A walk to Mclean Falls which was full of water thanks to the recent rain. The Year 10’s got to enjoy a Campfire before Friday and a big cleanup, beach walk and trip to Nugget Point on the way home. A massive thank you to the teachers and parents who came along. Without them camp experiences would not be possible.

A huge thank you to the students in our Te Ao Māori and Te Reo Māori classes for organizing daily activities throughout Te Wiki o te Reo Māori. It was fantastic to see so many of our ākonga and kaiako participating in the events and embracing the spirit of the week.

Friedreich Ataxia
Pre-loved Clothing Fundraiser
Friedreich Ataxia (FA) is a rare, inherited disease that causes progressive damage to the nervous system. It typically shows up in childhood or adolescence and leads to impaired muscle coordination (ataxia) that worsens over time. Unfortunately, there is currently no cure for Friedreich Ataxia, making research and support for those affected incredibly important.
FA often makes everyday activities like walking and climbing stairs difficult. FA can also cause life threatening complications.
To support research into Friedreich Ataxia and help those affected by this challenging condition, we are organising a Pre-Loved Clothing, Footwear, and Jewellery Sale. This event will take place on November 2, 2024, at the Tokomairiro Community Hub.
By purchasing items at our sale, you will not only find unique and affordable fashion pieces but also contribute to a cause that aims to improve the lives of those living with FA. All proceeds from the sale will go to research initiatives focused on finding a cure and developing better treatments for Friedreich Ataxia.
We invite everyone in the community to join us in this effort. Whether you donate items, or simply come to shop, your participation will make a significant difference. Together, we can support vital research and bring hope to those affected by Friedreich Ataxia.
For more information please contact Denise Finch on 027 434 4964 or come in and see us at the Hub.
Let’s come together to make a positive impact and support the fight against Friedreich Ataxia. See you at the Tokomairiro Community Hub on November 2nd!

News from the Trenches...
And away we go again as I'm sitting in the centre of intelligence on Sunday at RSA gathering information.
Our NPC Tipping Comp is rapidly approaching the end with this week being the last week to play your joker for double points. Make sure you check your entry forms as quite a few missed the King Country vs Nth Otago game especially Compo, Clegg and Old Man Jenkins being particularly upset. Our prize giving will be on Friday 1st November so I understand some of the leaders are feeling under pressure and stress levels increasing. There were some close entries to pick the score but no one getting the correct score. This $600 now jackpots to the end of year tour in November. We had a big crowd for our All Blacks vs Australia test match with Ivan winning the Corporate Box hospitality.
Our weekly Thursday night raffles having been going busters recently with raffles sold as quickly as I've ever seen. Everyone recently has clammed up this week to any potential naughtiness, so I'm having to go deeper to have some success.
